Content Watch

Hero side level 1 to 10

“Go. Hunt. Kill Hellions… Skulls… Clockworks… Councils… Vahziloks…
Losts… Circles…Alouette… Over and over.”
- The veteran heroes’ mantra.
(Original idea : M_I_Abrahms)

Hello everyone, this is Plater and I am back this week for the
second edition of the Content Watch. Here, we analyze the current content split
by level ranges and with insight from the community; we’ll see what players
think, like and dislike of the current content offered in CoX.

You
can read the full discussion on Hero side level 1-10
here
and feel free to post your opinion even if this article is already
published. I and others will take the time to read it

This time after getting caught in a monster party in Perez, I am
back and surprisingly still clean and in one piece. I will cover the five zones
that make the content of early levels Hero side: Atlas Park, Galaxy City, Kings
Row, the Hollows and the Sewers. From the discussion, I can feel that a many
players think the content is a bit lacking because missions from contacts just
don’t follow a story arc.

This Issue:

At the beginning you can pick either Atlas or Galaxy as your
starting zone. In both cases, the missions you will get are similar, granted
your starting contact will be selected according to your Origin. This leads me
to avoiding creating Science based characters because you get Vahzilok
missions, but that’s my opinion. Atlas is viewed as the popular starting zone;
at any time you have players hanging out under the statue and the infamous
Atlas broadcast spam. Galaxy is the quiet zone that players pick because they
want to solo those early level without getting annoyed by random invites.

Comicsluvr wrote: “More content? Maybe not. As you said,
characters can level out of the first 10 levels easily. BETTER content though?
Another story altogether.” I tend to agree with this statement. You can level
from 2 to 6 in 1-2 hours of hunting in the sewers. If you add more new content,
players would just do it once or twice then head back to their old habits.

At
level 5 you get access to 2 mores zones, Kings Row and the Hollows. Your first
contact after the starting one will send you to the infamous Lt. Wincott in the
Hollows. Some players have commented that it should be written somewhere that
you don’t have to stay in the Hollows and you can go level off other contacts
and doing Police Bands missions in KR. Most players seem to get a few Police
Bands missions and run the safeguard to get the jetpack power then will go
wherever the missions or teams are. The Hollows are interesting because for the
first time, you get some story arc: FrostFire of the Outcasts and how the
Trolls and Atta took over. Both arcs have an elite boss at the end, so beware
if you like to solo.

Over the Issues, the Devs have added some new things to ‘old’
zones. For each starting contacts, a unique map was added, like a Skull’s
Superadine lab, Longbow and Paragon Police patrolling the streets of Atlas,
Galaxy and Kings Row. While these changes are mostly cosmetic, they do
contribute in making the early levels more enjoyable.

A few problems do still remain in the early levels. The most
frustrating are horrible door placement, having to cross 2-3 zones to get to a
door and kill tasks in hazard zones. For example, the kill 10 Circle of Thorns
in Perez is probably one of the most hated kill tasks. Also the lack of fun and
variable low level content can be boring for alt-a-holics. 0th_Power wrote:
“sewers to 6; radios to 7, get jetpack; Perez road to 10; all this assuming you
have a team.” If you’ve done 1-10 a few times, speed leveling to 10 or higher
becomes a tempting option.

Each
player has his way to breeze past the first ten levels. Sewers, street sweeping
hellions for magic salvage, police bands missions, unlocking the negotiator
badge contact or grouping in the Hollows. There’s plenty of ways to please
everyone, even if for many it is to get as fast as possible to a level where
your Archetype becomes more fun to play.

I am impressed by the quality of the posts in the Content Watch
thread. I thank everyone that took the time to think and write their opinions.
Even if a thread can down fast in the City Life section, I appreciate everyone
efforts in keeping it alive for a full week. Next time, let’s break the 40
replies and please trolls be gone and go back where you belong.

The next Content Watch thread should be up in about a week, stay
tuned to the City Scoop where it will be advertised in the Classified Ads. The
next article will be about Hero side level 11 to 20. And thank you all for
taking some of your precious time to read this.

Go.
Hunt. Get Badge.

There has been a boatload of new badges added with Issue 11. This
time I'm going to cover some tips on how to get 3 of them.

Gold Medalist- complete a Task Force or Flashback
within 30 minutes.

Silver Medalist- see above, 60 minute time limit.

Bronze Medalist- see above, 120 minute time
limit.

This is one of the Challenge Mode settings you are allowed to pick
when you use the Pillar of Ice and Flame. The time limit applies to the entire
arc, not each individual mission, so some forethought needs to be taken before
you try for the harder limits. Picking the arc you want to run through has
several factors involved.

Length-

Shorter arcs are definitely better choices. Some of the longer
arcs are upwards of 20 missions, and just impossible to complete in a timely
manner.

Team-

This is quite often going to be something you will want to do as a
soloist or small team. Since Ouroboros isn't open below level 25, by the time
you reach that point, you should have a good idea of how well you can solo, and
whether having a helper would make a difference. A big team is even harder to
keep moving, and with larger enemy spawns it's often simpler to avoid the
hassle and stay small. Interesting note, I was able to use the Pillar in my
super group base, and take a friend who wasn't high enough to go to Ouroboros.

Content-

It is a very good idea to pick an arc that takes place all in one
zone, or make sure you have several easy ways to get from mission to mission.
Heroes get the Storyline zones, like Hollows, Striga, Croatoa, etc. and each
one has some good choices. Another important idea is to look at the arc ahead
of time on a site like Nofuture. Pick an arc where there are few missions that
require you to defeat all enemies. Being able to shortcut by stealthing some of
the missions or at least not clearing the map, is a big help. Also, avoid arcs
that have missions that are almost guaranteed to take a lot of time. I tried
Croatoa at first, and realized that a couple of the contacts had missions where
getting them done quickly was impossible. Some even have missions that take a
guaranteed minimum amount of time (15minute timer or what have you). So instead
of guessing, and then failing, it's easier to plan ahead.

Powers-

Just like with any Flashback missions, you have to deal with
Temporal Scaling. Keep that in mind, the order in which you picked your powers
becomes more important. If you pick a nice short arc, but it's at a point
before you have a travel power, or you're lacking in attacks, you're in
trouble.

When I went to get the Gold Medal badge for my hero, it was pretty
easy. I chose the first arc in Faultline (Jim Temblor), and soloed it. When the
time came to get it for my villain, I did it with a friend as a duo, just to
experiment. My first choice was the arc from Golden Roller. The second mission
is a defeat all Lost on the cargo ship map, and that proved too big to run
though quickly. Next we tried to do Willy Wheeler's arc, and ran into an
interesting problem. The arc is listed as 3 missions, but when we did it there
were two missions dealing with the Circle of Thorns tossed in for no apparent
reason. Just goes to show you, even if you're careful you won't always succeed.
If I hadn't been deliberately trying to sort it out myself, I would have
quickly gone to my server's badge channel for advice on which arc to pick.

I'm sorry this isn't a little more comprehensive; my personal life
has been giving me fits this last week. So my challenge to Scoop readers is to
give me advice on which arcs make some good choices, and next week we'll
revisit the topic with some of your info added.

Addendum

By the way, the best story arcs currently for Gold Medalist (and
you can do the same arc over for the remaining time badges) are:

Blue Side:

Dave Wincott's
first hollows arc
: It has 3 of his four missions. There is one hunt
and two defeat alls. Note that the defeat 10 outcasts mission is NOT in the
flashback version. If you are lucky, the two defeat alls might be close
together. In case they aren't, don't choose gold Medalist with no travel powers
or only AT powers. My controllers were both able to do this solo.

Red Side:

Radio's
Hit List
: Don't worry about defeating everything; there is no Elite
Boss, and only three missions. Again, do not take the travel powers debuffs,
and you should be fine for Gold Medalist.

Save the no travel powers for Silver Medalist in both cases, and
only AT powers for Bronze Medalist or untimed runs. I would also recommend
doing these solo, on the lowest difficulty.

Base Showcase

This week we visit two smaller hero bases and see what they were
able to do with the smallest plot-size.

The Magus Arcana

Supergroup leader and base designer: Amonn is our
leader, and Corrigan Easton is the leader pro-tem and the base designer.

When established: About 2 years ago (The founder
no longer plays)

How many members: 13 (4 are alts.)

Approximate base value: 2,479,240

Approximately how much time do you spend: I play
around with it from time to time, but I haven't made any real changes since I
reworked it a couple weeks ago. I'd say the rework took me about four or five
hours.

Favorite base item/least favorite: My favorite
base item is probably the mystic teleporter. It's both functional and really
cool-looking. My least favorite item would have to be the magic axis, which not
only looks pretty silly, but has the most annoying sound effect...

Most enjoy/least enjoy: I love being able to get
creative and make a good-looking base that people will enjoy RPing in. I least
enjoy... nah, hate... nah, LOATHE the 'raidable' requirements! They get in the
way of everything!

Wish-list: To be honest, new textures. I can't
make a decent-looking arcane base, everything that's not out of place in an
arcane base is too Circle-of-Thorns. Wooden paneling, stone that isn't covered
in moss and grime... think the inside of the Magic stores, something like that.

Advice: Don't run yourself ragged trying to deal
with raidability, space, and the silliness of a lot of the editor. If you
aren't enjoying building your base, take a break for a while and come back
refreshed.

Anything else you'd like to add about your SG, your base or
the base system in general?

We're recruiting RPers!

Warriorz

“Come out and Play”

Supergroup leader and base designer: Ohsirus
(Founder and Base Editor)

Server and Alignment: Champion Blueside

When established: Jun 21, 2007

How many members: 1 Constant (Myself) and 2
others who I have never seen.

Approximate base value: 4.9 mill Hard Grinded

Approximately how much time do you spend: In the
beginning I was checking at every 20k gained (and the way I was playing that
was every night) for what new toy I could buy next. Then I hit the need for the
Super Computer and it all slowed down till I got it. Now though I hardly edit
the base cause it’s an 8x8 Plot fully maxed out now. I use to tell people that
Base Building is a mini-game of CoH and it seemed like once you thought you had
enough eggs for an omelet, you found out you ran out of cheese. It can be
really addictive for those with edit properties. My wife would sometimes
complain about the house being a mess and I would log-in and say “No way, the
base is clean as a whistle.”

Favorite base item/least favorite: My favorite
Item is the Mission Computer. Now don’t ask me why because it serves no
purpose, but I just enjoy the way it looks. My Least favorite item would be the
pillars; they never seem to blend in enough for my taste. I wish they would
adapt to the room you put them in.

Most enjoy/least enjoy: I most enjoy about Base
Editing is it’s fairly easy to pick up and run with. The least thing I enjoy is
when it’s time to rearrange a plot. It can be a nightmare if you don’t have
enough excess prestige.

Wish-list: Wentworth Access!!!!

Advice: Don’t expect a lot in a short amount of
time without some sacrifice and never give anyone Leader status.

Anything else you'd like to add about your SG, your base or
the base system in general?

Hopefully with NC Soft’s acquisition and the extra jobs being offered, bases
will finally get some much needed love.

Food & Recipies

Wonders of Food Safety

Care of Utensils

Knives:

Knives are made for one thing only, to keep an edge. Yes, not to
cut things but to keep an edge. The absolutely worst thing you can do with a
knife, or anything that has an edge, is to cut with it. It dulls the edge!!
However, if you must cut with your knives, and to make most dishes you do, you
want to make sure that the edge is as sharp as possible. Why? Well the number
one reason is to make sure you cut through things with the least amount of
work. This allows you to keep the integrity of anything you cut. If you've ever
cut a loaf of bread with a dull knife you will totally understand this. The
second, yet very important, reason is that if you miss your intended target,
the ER doc can patch you up easier. True story: while I was getting a finger
repaired, I did an impromptu interview with the doc sewing my tendons back
together. He thanked me for keeping my knives sharp and proceeded to tell me
horror stories of "Holiday Hack Jobs". Sliced hands and jagged finger cuts that
really couldn't be fixed because the "lips" or edges of the cut were so jagged
they could not be brought back together with any hope of functioning right.

To keep your knives sharp and your stitcher happy you will need a
few things.

• A good knife. You don't have to go out an buy a $3,000 dollar
titanium knife set, just one that is either made by a known cooking company
(Farberware) a good knife company, or a good cooking knife company (Hinkles).

• Take your knife(s) for an annual check up. Even if you know how
the sharpen knives, take your knife to a professional once a year. You do it
for your body, your car, your computer, why not your knives?

• Get a good steel. What is a "Steel" you ask? And well you
should. A Steel is a metal dowel, generally ribbed and magnetized, that removes
the imperfections on the knife’s edge.

Remember when I said that cutting is the absolute worse thing you
can do with a knife? Well, every time you run that knife through something,
whether it's a loaf of bread or a leather tough piece of meat, it dents, warps
and chips off pieces of metal. The professional term for these defects is
called burs. When you properly use a Steel, the burs are removed or
straightened out. There are two schools of "Steeling" knives and while they
start out very different, they end up the same. The "Buffet Line" method is to
hold the Steel in your non-dominate hand, parallel to you body, Steel pointing
straight up and run the knife over and over, on each side. This can be as
flashy as a night out at Benehanna's, and rather dangerous if the hand guard on
the Steel is small. The second method, the "Home Cook" method, is to hold the
Steel in your non-dominate hand, pointing down, balanced on a cutting board or
a net of hand towels. Slowly the knife is run down the sides, at a rough 45
deg. angle. This is done about 5 times on each side. You will find that if you
Steel your knifes before every use, they will hold that professional edge for
about a year.

Another thing that ruins knife edges is washing, specifically in
the dishwasher. NEVER run your knives in the dishwasher!!! Yes it is the
easiest was to wash them, and yes it is the easiest was to sanitize them, but
it dulls the hell out of them. And it can cause rusting, acid pitting and
undermined the integrity of the handle-tang connections.

Review:

-Keep your knives sharp

-Take good care of your knives by Steeling them and annual check
ups

-NEVER wash your knives in the dishwasher

Cold & Flu Season

How To Avoid Getting Sick

Well it's that time of the year again, the seasons are changing
and everyone is getting sick. Stomach Flu, Cold, you name it, it's going
around. Want to know how to avoid getting sick this holiday season, stay put! I
have a few tips.

Wash Your Hands - It's the simple way to avoid it
and the best way. The most common say to spread germs is hand to hand contact.
Remember when you shook Bob's hand? Remember when you helped the little old
lady next door with her groceries? What about when you helped your boss file
paperwork? Or when you took money from the customers at the register. All these
actions and then more you have a chance of picking up something and you
wouldn't even know it.

Flu Shot - Make sure you get them!

Get Enough Rest - Make sure you are getting at
least 8 hours of sleep. This helps your immune system stay strong and able to
fight off those nasty germs that will make you sick!

Stress - I understand it's that time of the year
again, where stress levels are very high. You are trying to run around and get
everything done for the holidays like Christmas shopping and getting things
planned for family and friends but just take at least one hour maybe two, to
sit and relax and think things over make yourself a list, check it twice. Make
sure everything is in order so you don't stress and take that time and relax
and enjoy yourself and get rest.

Try to avoid those who are sick - Now I can
understand this is one thing that is very hard to do, especially if you work
with the public. Try to avoid it the best you can and if you get sick, don't be
afraid to stay home! I know it's hard if you are on a tight budget but
sometimes you do need to take this time to get better or you will get more
people sick and this will make your job harder and thus it will make things
more stressful making it harder to get better. So take the time and if your
boss wants to get snotty about it, get that doctors note!

Vitamins - Take a daily vitamin, especially take
extra vitamin C, most popular item to get it from is Orange Juice. If you don't
like taking Vitamins, there are many vitamins in food. All you need is just to
find the right ones.

Such As…

B1 (thiamin) - spinach, green peas, tomato juice, watermelon,
sunflower seeds, lean ham, lean pork chops, soy milk

B2 (riboflavin) - spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, eggs, milk, liver,
oysters, clams

B3 (niacin) - spinach, potatoes, tomato juice, lean ground beef,
chicken breast, tuna (canned in water), liver, shrimp

Pantothenic Acid - widespread in foods

B6 (pyridoxine) - bananas, watermelon, tomato juice, broccoli,
spinach, acorn squash, potatoes, white rice, chicken breast

Folate - tomato juice, green beans, broccoli, spinach, asparagus,
okra, black-eyed peas, lentils, navy, pinto and garbanzo beans

B12 - meats, poultry, fish, shellfish, milk, eggs

C (ascorbic acid) - spinach, broccoli, red bell peppers, snow
peas, tomato juice, kiwi, mango, orange, grapefruit juice, strawberries

A (retinol) - mango, broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, tomato
juice, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, beef liver

D - self-synthesis via sunlight, fortified milk, egg yolk, liver,
fatty fish

E - polyunsaturated plant oils (soybean, corn and canola oils),
wheat germ, sunflower seeds, tofu, avocado, sweet potatoes, shrimp, cod

K - Brussels sprouts, leafy green vegetables, spinach, broccoli,
cabbage, liver

I am sure there is more ways to avoid getting sick, but those are
the top ways I know of. Now to those who are sick or feel like they are getting
sick, here is a good way to feel better fast!

I leave you - homemade chicken noodle soup!

INGREDIENTS

2 (14 ounce) cans chicken broth

2 cups water

3 carrots, chopped

3 stalks celery, chopped

1 pinch ground black pepper

3 slices fresh ginger root

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1/2 cup chopped cooked chicken breast meat

1/2 cup egg noodles

DIRECTIONS

In a large pot over medium heat combine the broth, water, carrots, celery and
ground black pepper and allow to cook. In a medium skillet over medium high
heat, combine the ginger, oil and chicken. Sauté for about 5 minutes and remove
the sliced ginger.

Add the chicken to the broth mixture, bring to a boil and then add the egg
noodles. Continue to cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes until noodles
and vegetables are tender.

See You Again Next Week!

By Popular
Request

This is the tenth in a series of By Popular Request articles,
which reviews commonly requested player suggestions that have strong positive
support, and reviews the implications and considerations that would need to be
considered if these suggestions were to be implemented.

This week’s subject – Added base functionality:

As of November 7th, 2007, with the NC Soft acquisition, all
existing accounts were granted access to both games. All those accounts
received access to supergroup bases at the same time. It seems reasonable to
take a look at some ways in which supergroup bases could be improved. There are
numerous upgrades that could be done, ranging from functional to aesthetic.
Some common function requests are for a remote form of CH access to be
available, bins for storage of salvage and recipes, ways to transfer them from
one character to another, more variability in the way access to bins is
granted, increased teleporter locations, and increased abilities for healing
and inspiration dispensers. Some aesthetic improvements would be increased
variety and additional styles of rooms available, increased interactivity with
room items, or adding new room items that have interactivity, perhaps special
sounds or lighting associated with seasonal interests, and potentially access
to costume generators.

Perhaps the most intriguing improvement would be to get Items of
Power, and the raiding system as a whole, working long term. With additional
people eligible, there may be a surge in the interest and ability to sustain
the raiding system Items of Power involves. If nothing else, it offers the devs
another avenue to add some content.

With the addition of the invention system, there should be a whole
range of supergroup activity that can be, in part, linked to inventions. One of
the associated changes that might be nice in order to encourage supergroup
activity is a reassessment of the influence-prestige ratio for running in
supergroup mode. Presently, some players feel that they are punished for
running in SG mode if they are trying to accumulate the influence necessary to
obtain desired set IOs. A removal or relaxing of the decrease in influence
earned while in SG mode might be powerful tool for priming the pump when it
comes to SG activity.

Here
is a thread
that summarizes a number of oft requested supergroup base
improvements.
