I need feedback on a rough sketch (non CoH)

OK, I am gearing up for Halloween and decided that I needed to do some type of Halloween related painting for the season. So, I finally decided on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow as my subject (yes, I am fully aware that is not CoH related). Anyway, I have been spending some time trying to find referrence and get inspiration, and finally I sat down and tried to sketch out my idea:

What I am looking for is fedback on the composition. I would really love to hear what works and what doesn't. What can I improve on, where can I tweak it to make it more dramatic and impressive?

Anyway, I do know that this isn't CoH related, but I really respect the opinions and feedback from this community.

Well, you know I love your work SlaveDawg. If I had to say there was something that didn't 'work' for me, it would have to be the scared pilgrim's eyes. The shape of them feels kinda Anime-esque and just didn't settle right for me. What did work for me is the Horse and Rider. Very nice. Has a wonderful Disney feel to it. Maybe that's why the eyes of the pilgrim are jarring for me. >_<

Sadly, meh arts skillz is the suck so I can't really give you the detailed feedback you want/

I noticed the eyes as well, with the same conclusion.

I think if you brought the outer corners of the eyes down to be in line with the inner corners, he'd look a lot more frightened.

After looking at it again, I think both of you are right on. I will do some tweaking to the eyes tomorrow night when I have some more free time. I am pretty bad at facial expressions and so any feedback like this is good for me. It helps me to see where I am using preconcieved symbols instead of referrence.
