The City Scoop

Ghostly Encounter

I
was sitting at my usual spot in the Pocket D, doing what I do best next to
blowing up heroes: drinking. Ah yeah. Nice pomegranate martini. Can't go wrong
with that. I look around, and I see the usual riff-raff like pickup guy trying
to get turndown girl. Poor sap. Why doesn't he just give it up? I see Carnies
dancing in the cages, and then I feel a cold breeze, almost an eerie presence.
The hair on the back of my neck starts to stand on end, and I look behind me.
It's Ghost Widow herself. I'm rendered speechless. Not very many villains of
the Rogue Isles see her in person and live to tell the tale.

She beckons me with an ethereal hand to sit at her table. Wretch,
ever vigilant stands, over her. He gives me the evil eye and starts huffing up,
ready to smash me into a bloody pulp. The Lady gives him a silent command to
stand down. I was not there to harm, but to learn.

Ghost Widow: Greetings…

Kahlan D'Rane: Hello. How is this day treating
you?

Ghost Widow: Fair enough.

Kahlan D'Rane : Would you, well, your companion,
like a drink?

Ghost Widow: He does not drink much. Certainly not when he
is… on the job.

Kahlan D'Rane: *trembles* If you don't mind me
asking, do you have any memories from before your death? If so, what are your
fondest ones and your worst ones?

Ghost Widow: Memories? Memories are all that I
have left. But that is all they are, just memories, neither fond nor foul. *She
dismisses the question with a wave of her gloved hand.*

Kahlan D'Rane: So, how long have you been with
Arachnos, both living years and spectral years combined? Other than the obvious
issue a few years ago, has your ascent to power within the organization been
smooth?

Ghost Widow: Ah, you should know better than to
ask a woman about her age… And things are never smooth when it comes to
Arachnos. Lord Recluse’s Darwinian philosophies are never clean. Effective, but
not clean.

[Ghostly Encounter continued]

Kahlan D'Rane: What is your primary role within
Arachnos, if you are at liberty to say?

Ghost Widow: Certainly you must have gathered
from your dealings with Scirocco that I am the leader of both the Fortunatas
and the Night Widows Corps within Arachnos. We are the eyes and ears of the
organization and when needed, we act with stealth and deadly precision to deal
with any issues.

Kahlan D'Rane: What is it like being the only
female in the upper tier of Arachnos? There has to be some drawbacks, perks,
and annoyances with all the testosterone there.

Ghost Widow: There are challenges to overcome,
but often the others are ruled by their base instincts, which are easy to
understand, and can be molded to suit my needs. Most of them do not understand
the strength of subtlety or the power of misdirection.

Kahlan D'Rane: If you don't mind, could you tell
me a little bit about your companion here? How long have you known him, and how
did you meet?

Ghost Widow: I have known Wretch for many years,
even before the… mishap. He has ever been a faithful companion, there when I
needed him. I knew… know his sister, although we have not quite been on good
terms since then.

Kahlan D'Rane: Out of all the Freedom Phalanx and
their little Vindicators, who has given you the most trouble in the past? Who
is your most hated adversary in the Phalanx? How did you manage to crush them?

Ghost Widow: Hate is a strong word. I do not hate
them. They are what they are. Misguided, perhaps, but… *She pauses for a
moment, then continues with a shrug.* I have had my share of dealings with both
Numina and Sister Psyche. Still, I cannot say I have crushed either of them as
they both still live. But then again, the dance itself can be the most
enjoyable aspect.

Kahlan D'Rane: Which group of annoyances that
infect the Isles do you like to see harried the most? To be honest, I prefer
blowing up Rikti. Those things creep me out, and after their nasty experiment
on me, it's kind of personal.

Ghost Widow: There are many organizations that
call the Isles home, each with their own uses and weaknesses. It is all a
matter of which cards need to be played at which time, what piece needs to be
moved where… To be more specific, though, in the past, I have gained
significant advantage through the manipulation of both the Circle of Thorns and
the Legacy Chain, as these groups have resources that strengthen those of my
followers.

Kahlan D'Rane: I know that you have probably been
at odds with your compatriots in the higher echelons of Arachnos. I was
wondering who you tolerate the most out of all of them?

Ghost Widow: For the most part, I attempt to
maintain amiable relations with all factions of Arachnos, but I have worked
with Scirocco and Mako in the past with some success. Scirocco can certainly
be… entertaining.

Kahlan D'Rane: Who do you hate the most within
the circle? Personally, I find Black Scorpion rather distasteful. He has this
habit of attempting to grab my rear with his claw every time I come to get
another task from Lord Recluse. My boss says he's a whiny three year old, and
he would be glad to beat him again.

Ghost Widow: Again, I do not hate anyone. Hate is
not productive. But I certainly have had my share of disagreements with Black
Scorpion. He refuses to see the bigger picture, focusing only on what is
directly in front of him.

Kahlan D'Rane: So are there any perks to being a
spirit? (No, I really don’t want to find out first hand. I'm content with my
corporeal form.) If so, what are they? Did it grant you more powers than what
you had when you were living? Does it limit you in any way?

Ghost Widow: Death gives one a… certain
understanding of the world and one’s place in it. But, unfortunately, that
understanding comes at the price of being forever removed from it. Such a state
confers obvious advantages… Not needing to eat or sleep or being unable to be
truly harmed, but it also has its drawbacks…

Kahlan D'Rane: What is your favorite mode of
obtaining information from people--as in, what methods do you enjoy using on
those who are stupid enough to withhold information from you and Lord Recluse.

Ghost Widow: There are those that believe that
the dead do not tell tales. Perhaps not, but their spirits… *she shrugs* I am
sure that you have heard of my Soul Storm.

Kahlan D'Rane: So, out of all things that are of
the flesh, what do you miss the most? What do you miss the least?

[Ghostly Encounter continued]

Ghost Widow: Miss? I fear those lists would be
one and the same. A source of eternal comfort and agony…

Kahlan D'Rane: I noticed a few times you have
been in the forefront of battle. Do you enjoy being on the front lines with the
rest of us?

Ghost Widow: I go where I am needed.

Kahlan D'Rane: Do you prefer to fight against the
mindless hordes of Longbow, Rikti and others of their ilk, or do you like to
take your combat to another level and face the countless so-called "heroes"
that try to take ground from us in zones like Bloody Bay and Sirens Call?

Ghost Widow: Again, I go where I am needed, where
I can forward my goals and the goals of Arachnos. I have spent time in the
current fight against the Rikti, fighting along side of villains and heroes
alike. I have also spent my fair share of time battling heroes for Recluse’s
Victory.

Kahlan D'Rane: If Arachnos gives you clearance,
do you plan on joining us on the front lines in the future?

Ghost Widow: I fight on the front lines all the
time. They just may not be the front lines that are obvious. After all, old
habits die hard.

*Nodding and rising from the table, Ghost Widow motions to
Wretch.*

Ghost Widow: It is time for us to go.

Kahlan D'Rane: Thank you for your time, great
lady. I appreciate this opportunity to get to know you a little better. If our
paths cross again, I hope you are as forgiving of my faults as you are today.

Ghost Widow: Indeed. Forgiveness is not something
I can give; it is something that is earned. But fear not, I am not
unreasonable. And we shall meet again, either here or afterwards…

Point/Counterpoint

This is the ninth in a series of point-counterpoint articles,
which will review commonly requested player suggestions, and review the pros
and cons of those suggestions.

This week’s subject – Veteran Rewards

POINT:

There are potential advantages to granting special bonuses to
characters on accounts that have been active for a long time. These bonuses can
inspire players to maintain their accounts longer, in order to obtain a certain
rewards they particularly want. It offers and alternative method for providing
players certain rewards that otherwise must be obtained by achieving certain
game goals, like reaching level 50 on a character, or defeating a certain foe
or mission. In this way, rewards can be earned without necessarily requiring
the player to be skilled at gameplay, or forcing them to do certain game
activities they might otherwise not wish to do. Finally, it is a direct way for
the developers to show appreciation to players for account longevity, the most
important part of an on-line games continued viability, and hopefully the
companies involved see better account retention.

COUNTERPOINT:

But there are also potential disadvantages to granting special
bonuses to characters on accounts that have been active for a long time. The
addition of a particularly sought after reward might produce jealousy from
players that have not had accounts open as long as some others, and
particularly for those with a long time before they will obtain that reward. If
rewards continue to be created, there is no way for a player to “catch up” in
that there will always be some rewards that are available that they do not yet
have. This complication can be partially addressed by a change in the reward
system. It could be as simple as ending the rewards program at a definite date.
It could also be done by allowing players to “buy ahead” receiving rewards
ahead of the normal time schedule. There could a choice based system, one in
which players can either “buy” the reward of their choice over time, or select
one of several rewards options at each longevity badge.

The Market Report

The Report in Review

This week has been another quiet one for the market. High-level
rare arcanes saw a modest drop overall during the course of the week, which may
have something to do with this reporter's blundering foray into arbitrage.
Those of you who bought cheap Deific Weapons can thank my mistakes.

The report has been running for some three months now, so it's a
good time to step back a bit and review what we've learned:

    [*]

Mid and high-level rare arcanes are consistently the big salvage
sellers. Nothing tech ever comes close, ever.

    [*]

The market rewards patience. Instant sales or purchases always
give the player the worst case price in the current pricing band, while patient
play can give the best case price in the current pricing band.

    [*]

The market's PvP aspects cannot be overlooked. All of the data
available to you can be manipulated by other market participants if that suits
their goals. Choose your price points carefully.

    [*]

The market reacts dramatically to shifts in content. Those
watching Issue 11's approach may want to keep this in mind.

    [*]

The market is shifting, dynamic, and above all, quite a bit of
    fun.

    [/list]

I hope these reports have added to the enjoyment of what I believe
    was Issue 9's best feature.

Base Showcase

This week, we visit the Triumph server and talk with
Shard_Warrior of the Birds of Prey hero supergroup.

SuperGroup Name: Birds of Prey, on the Triumph
server.

When Established: 2003 (can't remember the exact
date).

Members: Currently there are fifty-nine
characters in the group. That includes alts. We have about ten to twelve
individual players.

Rough Base Cost Estimate: Around two million so
far, and I spend about two hours a week or so in the base editor— more if we
have more prestige rolling in.

Favorite Decorative/Functional Base Item: For
decorative items, I'm partial to the SG Wall banners, Holograms, tables and
floor plates. They add a nice touch of SG Pride to our home. For functional
items, it would have to be the Teleporters. They cut down on the travel time
immensely, and our members really appreciate having them. The storage units and
vault are great, too.

Least Favorite: I don't really have a least
favorite decorative item. They're all wonderful. My least favorite functional
item is the Supercomputer. The cost is prohibitive on it.

What would you like to have changed about the base system, what do
you most like: I'd like to see a few things changed for the base system:

Definitely add more texture options. I'd love to see things like
windows and skylights (not every base should be a subterranean lair).

Make some of the functional items have decorative versions, too.

Personally, I'd like to see construction done on a per-square
basis, instead of upgrading to larger plots. Base builders could come up with
some intricate layouts this way instead of the base being a giant square.

Add more interim functional items to fill in the gaps in terms of
functional base progression. It's a big jump in price from the mainframe and
database(s) to the Supercomputer.

Multi-level construction would be really slick.

What I like most about the base system is how it adds even more
dimensions of creativity to the game. It's like making a costume for the whole
SG! Supergroups used to be just names and characters. Now players can carve out
their own home and have a place to meet, mingle, craft and PvP. The Base system
of CoX was a wonderful addition and offers something that few (if any) other
MMOs provide. I look forward to how these evolve in the game.

If you could give just one piece of advice to a new base
editor, what would it be?

Take your time with a base. Check out what others have done on the
forums and visit other groups for ideas.

Anything else you'd like to add about your SG, Base, or the
Base system?

Stop by our base anytime. There's always fresh coffee and
doughnuts! Birds of Prey welcomes active, mature players who enjoy teaming.
Look us up in game if you'd like to join us.

Arts and Entertainment

Artist Interview:

BattleWraith

Hey BattleWraith. You are a good friend of mine, and I appreciate
you whipping up that Positron line art for me for my introduction to CS. How
long did that line art take you?

It took a few hours. I'm not sure how long exactly because I was
doing other things at the time as well.

How long does the average picture take for you to finish?

At this point, I don't really think there is an average time.
There are pictures on my Deviant page that took maybe an hour, and then there
are others that took days. I'm still trying to find my ideal working process.

What is your favorite piece of all time (including, but not limited
to your commissions)?

Probably the Feral Kitty Pinup I have in my gallery. I think it
worked out the best in terms of composition, level of detail, etc. I have a 3D
model of my Blaster that I'm pleased with, but there's so much detail in the
mesh that it started choking my system and became very difficult to work with.

What has been the most influential moment to you as an artist?

Probably getting involved with digital art: 3D modeling,
rendering, and animation. Learning to use Photoshop. Reading comic books as a
kid and being exposed to a lot of art in different places I've lived
(especially Japan and New York). No one moment in particular really.

>Did you go to college for art?

No. But while at university, I took classes in printmaking,
sculpture, and computer modeling and animation.

Does anyone else in your family do art?

My younger sister is a graphic designer. My father is retired and
now is a sculptor.

Who are some of your favorite artists and inspirations?

Frazetta, Terada Katsuya, pretty much any of the Conceptart.org
people (Jason Manley, Andrew Jones, Carlos Huante, Jon Foster, etc.), Jack
Kirby, John Buscema. Surrealist and Expressionistic art in general.

What’s been the weirdest thing anyone has ever said about your art?
Best thing? Worst thing?

Weirdest? Can't really remember anything in particular. Once in
college I was doing intaglio, which is acid etching metal plates to make
prints. So one time I just randomly dumped some resist on a plate and put it in
the acid bath. When I pulled it out, it made this image that was like a beaver
or squirrel or something standing there. So I put an outline around it to
strengthen the image. My printmaking teacher was dumbfounded about the quality
of my line work. He kept asking me how I managed to do certain parts of it.
Then he wanted me to do a whole series of prints based on an animal theme.

Best thing: That my stuff looks distinct. That it doesn't look like other
people's style.

Worst thing: The worst thing is complete indifference. When you post something
on a forum and the thread just fades into obscurity. Even if someone hates your
stuff, if they're willing to explain why, that can point you towards
improvement. If you get no reaction, you have to figure that the image is just
not worthy of comment and decide on your own why that might be.

What advice would you give other artists who are trying to improve
on their art?

Get a good understanding of human anatomy. Unless you're focusing
on landscapes or technical drawing, the human figure is going to be the
cornerstone of most art. Until you can render everyday reality competently,
don't settle on a style. Particularly an established style like anime. I've
seen many people use adopt a style as a...shorthand to get around weaknesses in
their drawing, and consequently, their artistic development tends to stagnate.

What music do you listen to when you art working on something?

The soundtrack for Ghost in the Shell, Tom Waits, and/or the sound
of my kids screaming and beating each other in the background.

How did you decide on the pricing of your commissions?

I just looked around at what other people were charging for stuff
I felt was comparable.

The Rogue Isle Repast

Brickstown Edition

Hello again, fellow villains and vigilantes. You, too, heroes and
other, assorted pains in my neck. Did ya miss me? For those of you wondering
where I have been, with my wit and culinary wisdom, I got pinched. Sent up
river, out to the hoosegow, to the big house. Yes, ol' Jenna Seidel was back in
the Ziggurat. I'm really pissed about it, too. I was heading out of the
Vanguard offices, and a Longbow agent pinched me, after I just saved his
cookies from the Rikti. That's gratitude for you. But it did answer a big
question I've been mulling over for a while now. Just how many times will the
Big Spider actually break a person out of the Zig? The answer? At least twice.

While I was there, I caught up with Millie Sutherland, the Echo
200 cell block Matron and the head of the food services. Millie's a great gal,
with a bunch of German heritage, a mean left hook, and a way around the
kitchen. Sometimes I do miss Millie's cooking. She has a way of cooking
institutional food that makes it taste homemade. She says it has to do with
subtle seasonings and growing up in a big family. From her Chicken and
Dumplings and SOS to American Goulash and Tuna Noodle Casserole, the last
serving is as good as the first. And it's not just the lunch and dinner fair,
but all three squares a day. You have never had delicious powdered eggs until
you try Millie's Western omelets.

Before I headed out the large hole blown into the side of the Zig,
I did manage to get Millie to give me a few recipes for the road. Her SOS (Same
Old Stuff or Creamed Hamburger on toast) and her peach crisp, scaled down, of
course.

Creamed Hamburger with Toast

This recipe can be used with any meat. The secret is over
seasoning the meat because of the cream sauce.

1 lb ground beef, this should be at least 80-20 beef (80% lean to 20% fat
content)

1 clove of garlic, minced or 1 teaspoon of good garlic salt or garlic powder

1 teaspoon of a good seasoning salt

pepper to taste

2-3 tablespoons of all purpose flour (you may not need all of this)

1-2 cups of whole or 2% milk at room temperature or warmer (up to 80 deg. F.)

4 pieces of "Texas Toast" or 8 slices of bread toasted

Brown 1 pound of hamburger in a big skillet, adding the seasoning and spices
half way through cooking. Check the seasoning after the meat is cooked through.
Remove the meat, saving the cooking grease. Over a medium heat sprinkle the
flour over the hot fat, while whisking. The goal is a paste that is thick and
lump free. Turn down the heat and slowly add the warm milk. The sauce will be
thin. Return the meat to the pan, and turn the heat up to medium. Stir
constantly until the sauce coats the back of the spoon.

Peach Crisp

This is a wonderful dish served hot or cold with a scoop of ice cream, fresh
whipped cream, or plain.

1 (15 oz) can of peaches in heavy syrup

1 cup of sugar divided in to 2 1/2 cups

1/2 cup of dark brown sugar

1/4 cup of all purpose flour

1/4 cup old fashioned rolled oats

1/2 stick of butter, room temperature

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

In a small sauce pan, mix the canned peaches and 1/2 the sugar over medium
heat. Bring to a simmer. In a small mixing bowl, mix the rest of the sugars,
the flour, the oats and the spices. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter,
two knives or two forks, or your hands. In an 8x8 baking dish, pour the peaches
and cover them with the sugar/oat topping. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 350 deg.
F. Let cool for about an hour, so the sugars, the flour, and the fruit pectin
have a chance to gel.

PvPEC Winners

As some of you may know, the PvPEC's latest event was held this
last weekend. There were many events, mainly the Duel Tournament and the 3v3
Tournament.

The 3v3 Tournament, held on Test, saw 14 teams show up to the
fight. Congratulations to Team Ownage for winning the Tournament. Second went
to Team Toasted Sorrows, third to Team Lacuna, and 4th to Team Vital Barrier.
Pictures of the event, and discussion can be foundhere.

The Duel Tournament showed a large showing also. The winner was
Mickey Slo on a Ice/Rad Controller. 2nd place was Ownage on a Mind/Fire
Dominator. 3rd place was Ajax (-Grasshoppa) on a Rad/Psy Defender, and 4th
place was Dohler_on a Energy/Ninjitsu Stalker. Pictures and discussion can be
found
here.

The SHW FFA was held this weekend also. For those who don't know,
FFA stands for Free For All, in which the objective is to kill as many people
as you can for 30 minutes, and the man with the most kills is the winner. The
winners were Ownage, Golder-Shot, and Hizzonor. Pictures and discussion can be
found
here.

Congradulations to Ownage for placing in all 3 major events, and good job to
all who participated.

Also, there is a Base Raiding event going on, for those who want
to keep track of standings, the information can be found
here.

The Art of the Art Trade

I've recently seen a growing fad appearing around deviantArt and
the forums here for “art trades.” The art trade isn't far from a commission,
but it involves bartering your skills for another's skills rather than money.
This is good for those of you with some talent, or at least enjoyment in
drawing, who would like to receive some art of your character. This is an
awesome way to spread your art and prepare yourself for taking commissions if
that is your intention. It's also a good way to get some practice in while
receiving something awesome in return. A lot of artists welcome art trades even
if they aren't announcing it. The best way to find an art trade is to check out
the art forums, or even message some artists you really like on here or
deviantArt. Remember to:

    [*]

Clarify and agree on the amount of work put into the pieces

    [*]

Make sure that, if you are making a detailed, coloured piece with
an extravagant background, you aren't trading for a ten minute sketch (unless
    that’s what you want)

    [*]

    Trade screenshots with the artist

    [*]

Set a deadline if you and the other artist want one

    [/list]

In my experience, deadlines are not set in art trades.

Remember that if the artist you are trading with is backed up with
commissions, you will have to be patient. Commissions might be the artist's
source of income, and believe me, you just cannot pay your rent with a drawing
of a guy in spandex. I've tried.

The Art of the Screen Shot

Someone recently informed me of the most classical and awesome way
to get a screenshot for a commission: the Tailor view!

Simply take shots of your hero or villain from different
angles—both zoomed in and zoomed out—that give enough information on the
outfit. There is really no wrong way to go with this method, unless you want a
full-body drawing and only send in pictures of the back of the head.

Behind the Mask

Blitzwing

Pinnacle Server

Where do you live?

Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

Do you have any pets?

One Cockatiel named “Munchkin.” Little pain in the [censored]
sometimes, but I love him nonetheless!

What is the most interesting place you have visited?

Calgary, Alberta, Canada...went there about ten years ago for ten
days. In retrospect, probably not a wise choice to go there in the middle of
January...COLD!

What are your top three songs of all time?

“The Touch” by Stan Bush, “Rainbow Connection” by Kermit the Frog,
and “SKILL” by Jam Project(Japanese).

What five TV shows could you not live without?

The Muppet Show(any incarnation), Transformers(any incarnation),
Futurama, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and the newest addition to the list,
(King of the Braves) GaoGaiGar. *Yells* 'Broken Magnuuummmmmmm!'

What was the best book you last read?

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows;” the only true way that
series could have ended...

What is your favorite pop culture quote?

“Boot to the Head!” from a comedy troupe known as 'The Frantics'

What other hobbies do you have?

Writing in my spare time (and when I can motivate myself to),
anime ('Weapons grade' Otaku, I am, heh), and playing WAY too many video games
for my own good!

Who is your real life hero?

Hard call really, but I'd have to say Jim Henson. As a friend of
mine recently said of him, “..I think Jim was the kind of creative genius that
we all can dream of being...”

What is your home server, and why did you end up picking it as your
home server?

Pinnacle: The only server that faceplants before a fight! When I
first started the game, it was the server listed as the lowest population at
that moment, which is usually how I pick my starting server on a game...funny
how fate works, eh?

How were you drawn to this game?

C'mon, I can't think of anyone who hasn't wanted to be a superhero
at some point in their lives. It's a streamlined approach to MMORPGs, and it's
colorful nature also played a big role.

What is your favorite aspect of the game?

The aforementioned streamlined approach and its solo-friendly
nature are the two big draws for me, but it's always nice to have friends
nearby to save the day!

Who is your namesake character, and what are they?

Blitzwing, my first character, is a lvl 50 Energy/Devices/Force Mastery
Blaster. I don't see too many Energy/Devices Blasters anymore, and fewer still
with my unorthodox defensive-support build; it can defend itself well enough in
PVE, but really shines in group situations and in large-scale team-based PVP,
where I can hang WAY back while Cloaked and directing the action. Sadly, it's
totally useless in duels and 1-on-1 PVP situations.

[Blitzwing continued]

Which type of character would you say is your favorite to play and
why?

Ever since my days of EverQuest(2002-2004), I've always preferred
support-type characters or anything capable of multi-role work...makes you
think Controllers would be right up my alley, but I can never QUITE get into a
groove with them.

How do you normally handle new challenges in the game?

If I have time to analyze the situation, I do so, adapting as the
combat calls for it. If I -don't- have the time, I'm usually the first to
panic, hehe!

Which zone is your favorite?

I think Steel Canyon is the closest I have to a “favorite” zone;
it's towering buildings (the tops of which most players may never see), its
general design, and the fact that I met my first real group of friends out
there.

What is your favorite storyline in the game?

The T.V. missions, Villain-side! I've heard of getting into show
business, but this is ridiculous, and- *gets pummeled by many large blunt
objects thrown at him*

It has been a busy year for the game so far. Do you feel that I9
and I10 have really added anything to the game and why?

I9-10 really changed the whole landscape of the game, I believe;
Inventions, new salvage, new zones, the Rikti War Zone and its co-op missions
(FINALLY), but I get the feeling that this is just the beginning. A few years
down the road, I won't be surprised if players look back and say that this is
where it all truly took off.

What advice do you have for any new players to the game?

Don't rush it. That'll get you killed...er....”defeated”..in a
hurry. Play the AT that fits you best, and as a friend of mine said to me just
yesterday, “It's just a game. Enjoy it while you can!”

Any closing comments?

As a matter of fact, yeah; I'd like to thank the friends I've made
over 3 years for staying with this nutjob Blaster through my often
chaotically-shifting moods; I'd like to thank Cryptic/NCSoft for making this
game in the first place, thus giving ME a chance to vent stress when I really
needed it...and I'd like to- BOOT TO THE HEAD! -thwap-

Freedom Server

Where
do you live?

St. Louis, Missouri—actually, out in the country.

Do you have any pets?

I've got two dogs, a black Cocker Spaniel named Bear and a Mini
Pincer named Peevy.

What is the most interesting place you have visited?

I would have to say there are a couple. I went with my family to
New Orleans, LA when I was 10 for almost a week. Stayed in the French Quarter.
The other would be the JFK museum in Dallas.

What are your top four songs of all time?

“Good Vibrations” - The Beach Boys

“Lips of an Angel” - Hinder (long story behind that one)

“She's Everything” - Brad Paisley

“Tough” - Craig Morgan

What five TV shows could you not live without?

Really, I watch a lot of TV, which I know is bad for you, but I
don't know if there are any shows that I couldn't live without. A few that I
watch on a regular basis are Good Eats on the Food Network, NCIS, Doctor Who,
and Mind Control with Darren Brown, both on the Sci Fi Channel. There are a
couple more that I watch if they're on and the story catches my interest.

What was the best book you last read?

That would have to be the sixth Harry Potter book. Yes, I'm a
30-something guy who reads Harry Potter. I wasn't going to read them until a
female friend of mine told me I should check them out. I read the first one and
was hooked. I read just about anything though.

What is your favorite pop culture quote?

I've got a couple from the same movie; Ghostbusters.

Dr. Peter Venkman: "What did you DO, Ray?"

Dr. Peter Venkman: "Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together—mass
hysteria."

Hey, they're the first ones that came to mind.

[Rx1 continued]

What other hobbies do you have?

I like to read and listen to music. I play paintball, even though
I haven't been out in a year or so. I like toying around with Photoshop CS, but
I'm no master at it by any means.

Who is your real life hero?

I would have to say a certain person who is very near and dear to
my heart. Before I met her, I thought I was tough. I've got nothing on her. If
you've never heard it, listen to the last song on my top four list above. I
guarantee it will bring a tear to your eye if you know someone like that, I
don't care how big of a man you are.

How were you drawn to this game?

Come on, how can you NOT be drawn to a game where you get to play
a freaking superhero. I will admit that my love for the game kinda wore out
when WoW came out, and I actually stopped playing and canceled my account. But
I soon got over the pretty backdrops of Azeroth and was drawn back to protect
Paragon City.

What is your favorite aspect of the game?

The costume creation process. I'm always being teased by SG mates
that I change costumes more than most of them change their socks.

Who is your namesake character, and what are they?

Rx1 (But, please, if you see me in game, call me Rx. When I came
back to the game someone had snatched up Rx, so I had to add the 1 at the end.
Guess that's what I get for canceling my account in the first place). She is an
Emp/Psy Defender and my one and only 50.

Which type of character would you say is your favorite to play and
why?

My favorite is the Defender. In every MMO I've played I've played
some kind of support toon. In DAoC, I was a Dwarf Healer. In WoW, I played a
Hunter or some sort of Healer. I pride myself in keeping a team up and running
as best as I can. And for some strange reason, I always...almost always...feel
bad if I let a teammate "die." That is unless they ran off and aggro'd a whole
mob just for the heck of it, or they felt like they were too good to stay with
the group.

When I'm playing my Defenders, I follow the star. If you have a strange problem
with that, don't come crying to me when the mobs beat you up and put you in the
hospital because I didn't leave the rest of the group high and dry to come pull
your butt out of the fire you got into.

How do you normally handle new challenges in the game?

Carefully, or ask a friend how they think would best be to
approach the situation. I don't solo much so when I come upon a new challenge
it's usually with a group of friends and we figure it out together.

Which zone is your favorite?

You know, I've never really thought about it. I bounce from zone
to zone so much, I don't get much time to just explore.

What is your favorite storyline in the game?

I don't have one really. BUT, I am looking forward to doing my own
BM story arc, A Hero's Hero. I was helping someone with theirs and thought the
coolest part of it was the Tyrant mish where you rescue Statesman.

What advice do you have for any new players to the game?

Yes, don't be bashful. If someone asks you if you want to group
with them, do it. If you get a bad group that wipes after getting in way over
their heads, you'll learn what not to do the next time. On the flip side, if
you get hooked up with a great group that knows what they're doing, you can
learn a lot about what to do and when.

Just don't let someone try to tell you how you should play your character.
Advice is one thing, if they have some constructive criticism about how you
could do something that would benefit you or your team. But someone flat out
telling you or demanding you use your powers when and how they say is
completely different. I've personally had someone tell me how to play my
Defender. I politely ask them if they have ever played a Defender and when they
answered no (which I knew was going to be the answer just by they were telling
me I should do), I told them that I will play MY toon the way I want to play
it.

Any closing comments?

Yes. Your best ally in this game are the other people behind the
masks. If you find a group of people that you like playing with on a regular
basis, you will always be one step ahead of the mobs.

Also, I've heard some negative comments about the people on Freedom being rude.
Not everyone there is rude. Every server has its fair share of jerks. Don't let
a few of the rotten ones be the ruler by which you measure everyone on the
server.

Steel
Magnolia

So Many Servers So Little Time

Where
do you live?

Steele Magnolia lives at the Whitmoore Apartments, Apt 1230, in
Steel Canyon. I, however, live in Baltimore MD.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, a 13-year old cat who helps me play, and a frog named Moe who
thankfully does not. Dust bunnies.

Most interesting place you have visited.

That’s a tossup between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Your top three songs of all time

”Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley

“Goodnight Saigon” by Billy Joel

“Breaking the Habit” Linkin Park

What 5 TV shows could not live without?

I don’t watch much television, so… Burn Notice is the only modern
one. MASH. The original Star Trek. News, the good, the bad, and the ugly, it
takes more than one viewpoint to form your own, otherwise you’re just
indoctrinated.

Best book you last read?

THE ONE PERCENT DOCTRINE by Ron Suskind

What is your favorite pop culture quote?

“And now… the rest of the story….”

What other hobbies do you have?

Reading, Cooking, Bible Study, Gardening, Crafts

Who is your real life hero?

US Army General (retired) and Former Secretary of State Colin Powell

Pants?

Sometimes. As a woman I have more options than that.

What is your home server and why did you end up picking it as your
home server?

I began on Pinnacle with my husband and friends, and branched out
to play on Liberty, Virtue, and Infinity with friends I met through writing in
the Whitmoore Apartments RP thread on the COH official site. I still play on
all of these servers part-time, but Liberty is my home and I’m glad to be
there.

How did you get drawn to this game?

I’ve been waiting for years for a good Superhero game…. And then
saw the ministory about COH in the PvP Online comic.

What is your favorite aspect of the game?

I love being a hero!

Who is your namesake character and what are they?

Steele Magnolia is my namesake character, a 47 AR/Dev Blaster, but
I’m best known as Sgt Pandora 50 Rad/Rad Defender on Liberty Server.

Which type of character would you say is your favorite to play and
why.

Defenders. I currently have five active, but I play everything
except Kheldians. I also love Masterminds.

How do you normally handle new challenges in the game?

I dig my heels in, grab them by both hands, bite down, and don’t
let go. Oh, and a few runs through the base infirmary, hit the bins for
inspirations, call on backup through Ye Olde SG and Coalition channels, pull up
the global friends list. Unless it’s the Lag Hag or DC Monster… then I cry.

What zone is your favorite?

Right now? The RWZ, I’m digging in, exploring with my friends,
watching the story unfold, and I swear I’m going to blow that ship up one of
these days. The music in Williams Square in FF has always been a lift, I love
it, I have to say that.

What is your favorite Storyline in the game?

The four-part Archon Burcholder story in Striga

[Steel Magnolia continued]

It has been a busy year for the game so far. Do you feel that I9
and I10 really added anything to the game and why?

I9 served a part of the game population, so does PvP, I can’t
argue with it in that respect. I use Inventions and WW myself, and enjoy it,
but I don’t obsess about it. I wonder about the game economy, and I see it as
far too complex for the new or the casual player when I, who have been playing
for over 3 years and 5000+ hours, was still making stupid mistakes weeks after
its launch. I10 served another part of the population, but it is openly
accessible to all, some would say too accessible in the form of invasions… but
what do you want… it’s an INVASION! I love it! We’re heroes, we’re villains,
we’re united against a menace against our world! This has something that has
been coming for three years now, and I would hate to see it diminished or
cheapened.

What advice do you have for any new players to the game?

Do the tutorial, take your time, make friends with people who will
help you, join an SG that wants more than your prestige. This is a game about
more than pixels and xp, it’s about relationships too, if you want it to be.

Any closing comments?

Three years and hoping for three more… thank you.

Dark
Fuel

Triumph Server

Where do you live?

I live in Park Forest, IL which is about an hour south of Chicago.

Do you have any pets?

I have a 1-1/2 year old half pit bull, half American bulldog named
"Capone."

What is the most interesting place you have visited?

Yellowstone National Park, by far.

What are your top three songs of all time?

Oh jeez, this is a real tough one, but I'd have to say "Hells
Bells" by AC/DC, "Midnight Rider" by The Allman Brothers and "Kick Start my
Heart" by Motley Crue. Very wide range, I know.

What five TV shows could you not live without?

Rescue Me

Burn Notice

WWE Raw

The Simpsons

Any of the poker shows

What was the best book you last read?

Last book I read was Tom Clancy's “Splinter Cell: Checkmate.”
Currently reading “The Bourne Ultimatum.”

What is your favorite pop culture quote?

"We can't run from who we are, our destiny chooses us." It's from
the movie "Rounders". I think it fits the game perfectly.

Who is your real life hero?

Both of my parents, especially my mother who beat breast cancer
five years ago.

Pants?

I wear them in the winter, shorts the rest of the year.

[Dark Fuel continued]

How were you drawn to this game?

One of my friends was really into it and told me about it, but she
hasn't played in quite a while, and I haven't talked to her in a while either.

What is your favorite aspect of the game?

My favorite aspect is the customization of the characters with all
the different costume options and colors. Plus all the different power combos
are cool as well.

Who is your namesake character, and what are they?

My namesake character is Dark Fuel, and he is a level 43 science
origin claws/regen Stalker.

Which type of character would you say is your favorite to play and
why?

I like Stalkers the best with Corruptors being a close second. I'm
not sure why I'm drawn to Stalkers but there's just something about them.

How do you normally handle new challenges in the game?

Like I always do, claws out ready to do some heavy damage and
trying not to die, lol. Although if you look through my badges, you'll see that
I die quite often.

It has been a busy year for the game so far. Do you feel that I9
and I10 have really added anything to the game and why?

I really like the inventions, although some of the recipes and
salvage are way too overpriced, but that's really here nor there. I10 I like as
well because it's a chance to beat the snot out of some aliens trying to take
over my world...yes, I said my world.

What advice do you have for any new players to the game?

Don't send out random team invites to players, use a tell to ask
them if they want to team. Also be patient because it can take a while to get
some of the better powers in your set, and overall, have fun, it is just a
game.

Any closing comments?

I just want to give a shout out to my supergroup mates in the
Forsaken Blades, and if you're looking for me, I'll be on Triumph slicing and
dicing away at everyone that gets in my way

Freedom Character Auction

There are some players that, for whatever reason, gain a bit of
notoriety or “fame” in the game, and folks go, “Gee, I’ll bet they would be fun
to run a few missions with.” Well, Rose and Cheetara of Freedom server thought
that sounded like a great idea, and the Freedom Character Auction was born!

They gathered together about thirty of the server’s better known
players and auctioned off two hours of their playtime to the highest bidders.
All the proceeds went into the prize pot, and random prizes and one large grand
prize were drawn from it. The grand prize came to nearly 650 million and was
awarded to a single character, who has asked that his name not appear in this
article, for reasons that should probably be obvious.

The people auctioned off included:

▪Invulnerable OSHA

▪PB Tammy

▪Goddess Ishtar

▪Spinal Tap II

▪Soulfunk Brother

▪Baseball

▪Blessed’

▪The Omega Fire-Kin

▪Jaxicle

▪Lady Sera

▪Hell’s Huntress

▪Pink Lemonade Cat

▪Dr. Turgenev

▪Saddie Maem

▪Jo Jo the Bunny

▪Iolana

▪Softball

▪ILR

▪Sparta

▪Hamenopi

▪Mister Laser

▪Tundara

▪Hot Edd

▪J-man

▪Cheetara

▪Rose

The entire J-Force crew was auctioned off for a whopping 75
million influence!

The Freedom Character Auction was a fantastically original and unique event
that brought the community together in a new and exciting way. The event was a
ton of fun, and it helped Freedom's players get to know one another a little
bit better. The festivities lasted about five hours and were a real blast. I
think I can speak for the whole Freedom server when I say that I hope we have
many more fun events like this in the future.

Heroscopes

Controller
(Gemini)
– Uranus trine Jupiter presents you with new
opportunities to broaden yourself and may indicate good fortune.

Answer the questions you are asked. You’ll be surprised at how much you know,
and so will everyone else.

Defender
(Cancer)
– With Moon transiting the Tenth House, you display an
urge to be recognized by co-workers for hard work.

Others respect your opinion, and with good reason. You’re often right. That’s
because you do the homework and consistently keep your word.

Scrapper
(Leo)
– Saturn transiting the First House tends to slow you down,
making you realistic about your abilities and expectations for success.

The farther out you get, the more you realize you don’t know. No need to tell
others. Learn fast as you go along.

Blaster
(Scorpio)
– With Mars opposite Pluto, you should take the time to
consider others feelings before making rash decisions about how to improve
their lot.

If you hold your tongue, you will avoid hurting someone through an ugly
confrontation. Head down, nose to the wheel, shoulder to the grindstone. Others
will be impressed by your work.

Tanker
(Aquarius)
- Jupiter opposite Saturn may create many conflicts
both at home and at work.

You don’t have to do this all by yourself. You can consult an expert or a good
friend.

Peacebringer
(Libra)
– Mercury conjunct Mars confers great intellectual energy
and ability to concentrate. You will feel intellectually competitive and may
become irritated by trivialities.

Let your friends take care of you a little while longer.

Warshade
(Pisces)
- Uranus transiting the Second House marks a time of
outrageous fortune. The money should be starting to come in now. Plan a
shopping trip.

Villainscopes

Brute
(Aries)
– Sun square Moon may bring to you today an inability to
take charge in the work environment.

Don’t be shy, seize the moment, and take charge. Others need a strong leader
and your talents are obvious as long as you remember to include your co-workers
in your plans.

Mastermind
(Virgo)
– Sun conjunct Sun makes you apt to be more reflective and
nostalgic than usual, but this is understandable as it is near your birthday.

Try to assert yourself today as new ventures will likely prove successful. It’s
not easy asking for help. Asking for advice from friends and family is a better
idea anyway.

Corrupter
(Sagittarius)
– Sun transiting the Tenth House marks a time when
you should enjoy great success and attention.

You maintain decorum, as important people are watching. You don’t have to be
crisp all the time, however. There’s a little room to relax.

Dominator
(Taurus)
– Sun square Venus could bring about a certain degree of
carelessness in your business dealings today.

It’s a good thing you work well under stress. Carelessness is not a good thing
when you’re also behind schedule and getting pressure from higher-ups.

Stalker
(Capricorn)
– Sun square Saturn may bring a great deal of
reflection, especially about your work.

There may be a tremendous desire to cut loose and try something completely
different today, and it's a good time to think about where your professional
life is heading. Free yourself from the menial chores of life so that you can
focus on the big picture. Delegate.

~Handwritten page found laying atop the Horoscope submission~

Good day, sweetness. I’ve spent a second or so skimming the hero’s
idea of a horoscope and this calls for a complete re-write. There’s nothing in
all that blather that’s of any use to you. Shall we?

Villain Horrorscopes

Brute
– You smash things. That’s it, dear. However, if you want your friends to keep
up with you, you might want to consider bringing along something more
stimulating than your conversation skills.

Mastermind
– You may desire a shorter leash for your pets, or a longer whip. Enough of
that “blah blah, go do something” type of orders. Command them, command their
very nature, and bend it to your will. Else, the stars say they’ll look for a
new master.

Corrupter
– Your powers of observation are astounding. Now please use them.

Dominator
– Tell me, are the rumors of your demise greatly exaggerated? No? Perhaps you
should do…something

Stalker
– That buzzing sound you hear is a fly blowing your cover. Bathe.

Heroes…

Controller
– I love your costume, dear. However, water reflects. Perhaps something a tad
more modest is in order unless you intend to control your enemies with your
underpants.

Defender
– Fort, please. No, no conversation. It ruins the mood. Now back to buffing.

Scrapper
– You remind me of a Brute I know. He had a slight problem getting his bar all
the way up. There are enhancements for that.

Blaster
– Kindly do me the honor of dying in a better position when next we meet. I
abhor mud on my boots, but I do love standing upon the backs of others.

Tanker
– My dear, apparently you missed the memo. Herding is dead. Stop. Now. It’s
embarrassing to team with you.

Peacebringer
– I would be most pleased if you would consider wearing your mask more often.
Like, all the time.

Warshade
– No dear, it isn’t a “bad hair day.” Not when it’s every day. Buy a hat.

Dear
Athy,

"I'm a hero, and I am currently training a sidekick. Things have
been going well for the most part, and she is almost ready to start fighting
villains. The problem started the other night after I had to rescue a city
councilman late at night. I came back to the base, and I heard some weird
noises. I went to investigate and I found her ‘blasting off’ to pictures of
villains in the storage room of our base. Needless to say, we were both
embarrassed. How can I handle this in a graceful manner?"

--Perplexed Mentor

Dear Perplexed,

Other than working out some sort of signal to show when each other requires
privacy, or, at the very least, a door, I’d say nothing more. After all, for a
variety of reasons, we all want a little alone time once in a while. Addressing
the privacy issue itself will serve you both regardless of the incident you
mention.

~Athy
