Vanguard Shield Issues Civil Defense Recommendations

Reports at this time are still coming in, but it seems that even
though it is world wide, this second Rikti Invasion is on a smaller scale than
the first. We can only hope this is because they're unable to open larger
portals, and not because they have more in store for us. The raids are fast and
potentially deadly, but according to Vanguard sources, the tactics are
predictable and if you're not in a position to respond, there's ample
opportunity to remain safe. The hit and run raids run in a predictable pattern,
and the way for dealing with each stage is consistent.

1- Alert: Raid sirens will sound in a zone, and . The Rikti have a way to temporarily cycle the
War Walls into low power mode so their Assault ships can attack, but the
vulnerability is limited to a few areas at a time. You will see the skies
darken from heavy ionization, and the glow of the War Wall will fade. You have
time to enter a building for shelter, or leave the area. Any sort of cover
(tunnels, enclosed structures) should be safe.

2- Bombing: The Assault ships will begin with
bombing runs. Watch out for strafing runs, and be on high alert for any
Unexploded ordnance. Vanguard offers a reward for eliminating any unexploded A
Bombs, but approach with caution.

3- Troop Assault: The next phase the Drop ships
will deliberately target any Hero responders to the attacks, by teleporting in
troops. The number sent has a lot to do with the size of your team, and the
number of heroes clustered in a limited area. If you're worried about being
overwhelmed, then maintain a Quad, a team of 4 members instead of a full team
of 8, and use caution when gathering at any rally spots that defenders may be
calling people to. Vanguard also rewards Heroes for taking out Rikti troops, as
well as the Heavy Assault suits that appear when larger groups are gathered.

4- Taking to the sky: The Drop ships are a
tempting target. However be warned that they have proven more than able of
taking care of themselves. Unless you have dozens of heroes ready to fight one,
it's best to simply avoid them. They're a prime target for a large response
force, but don't take them lightly. Vanguard Civil Defense does not recommend
assaulting them at this time, and doesn't reward heroes for doing so, but it's
worth the effort to take one out, as long as the rest of the defense is well in
hand.

Some final notes. These raids can be brutal, but so far Hospitals
have remained pretty safe. Rikti resources are limited, so there won't be raids
on more than a couple zones at a time. Experience debt while fighting off an
invasion isn't supposed to be happening, since we're all in the process of
learning to combat the new threats. All heroes of any level can contribute to
the battle. Don't hesitate to try helping out. Just keep your wits about you
and use some caution when you do it. We'll all be there on the front lines
together. Stay strong.

How Do I Roleplay?

Character Creation, Part One

“How do I roleplay?” It’s a question a lot of people ask, and it’s
a question I now intend to help answer. I sit here now with a very rare thing,
so feel special that I’m using it for you. A completely blank character list.
I’ll start from this point and take you guys from character creation to
backstory developing, to the basic rules of chatting with your friends
in-character, to the little details you might want to fill in about your
character.

Ok, here we go! Now, your first big decision is hero or villain.
I’ll cover both, but I myself will start with a hero. Most people when they
create a new character have a small concept in mind. A lot of times, these
concepts will grow on their own as you go through the creation process.
Alright, so let’s say you want a character who can take a lot, and dish just as
much back. Respectively, you would likely choose a Scrapper or a Brute. Read
the archetype descriptions if you need to for inspiration.

Now the Origin. How did your character get their powers? Did he
fall in a vat of toxic waste? Was he born with his powers? Did she find a
mystic artifact? Is he a robot from a far-off future? Or did she have to train
for years to get to where she is now? Get a general idea of where your
character comes from. If you’re having trouble, read the description of the
origins, and something may come to you. Personally, I’m making my Scrapper a
Mutant.

Next, powers. Oftentimes, your powers should match up in some way
with your origin. For instance, most normal humans can’t put off an energy
shield that can deflect bullets. If you can, message me and please teach me
how. Anyway, your powers should line up in a way with your origin. There are
some exceptions. For example, I have a Natural Invulnerability Scrapper who
lessens the damage on her by blocking the shots as a Martial Artist. As a
Mutant, or most any other origin, I could typically pick any Primary and
Secondary and there would be a “superhero-logical” explanation for how come my
character has it. In this case, I’m picking a Broadsword.

Next is your Secondary. Typically, a lot of Archetypes have
Powersets here that only ‘fit’ with certain Origins. Really, it’s only Natural
that is typically limited. I want my Scrapper to have a bit of darkness to him,
so I’m going to go literal on this and pick Dark Armor. If you’re not sure the
kind of Powersets you want, think of the kind of basic personality your
character has and let it reflect that. Is she loud? Be Sonic. Does he have a
short temper? Bring on the Fire. Is he just repulsive to be around? Check out
Poison.

It’s likely that you knew what body type you wanted from the
start. If you’re not sure, think about your Origin and Powersets, then go from
there. Something should come to you. I’m choosing Male here. Next you have to
decide their sizes. The game has provided basic settings for you to use. You
can click these and see which you like best. If you like to get more in-depth
with it, move the sliders yourselves. Don’t forget about height either. The
last thing you want is for your ultimate hero or terrifying villain to be two
heads shorter than a Hellion, unless that’s the joke in your concept of course.
Also, children characters aren’t typically six feet tall… A note to the guys,
the Chest slider is fun, yes, but remember, your heroine might like to be able
to see where she’s going once in a while. I picked an athletic build and kept
my character at an “average” height for comic book heroes. You might notice
that in comics, the important characters are always a bit taller than
civilians. This “average” height for most heroes seems to be six to six and a
half feet in comics.

That’s all for this week! Keep an eye out for Costume and Bio
building next week on the City Scoop!

Market Report

Prices surge as city responds to Rikti threat; worst behind us?

The Rikti force arrived Tuesday, as every crusader on both sides
is surely aware. Prices immediately skyrocketed on arcane salvage as the city's
attention was diverted away from foes specializing in such items.

The phenomenon surprised few savvy observers, but its expression
had some curious properties. First, only mid- to high-level salvage appears to
have been affected, which seems to result from the fact that only high level
heroes and villains can respond directly to the new Rikti threat in the War
Zone. Second, the rarest of arcane salvage was relatively stable compared to
commons, which saw in some cases a hundredfold increase in pricing.

And third, the spike seems to have flattened out already. Only
three days after the Rikti arrival, pricing on most of the salvage hit by the
spike had returned to high-but-reasonable levels - the notable exception being
Runes, which remained astronomical as of Thursday morning.

Is the worst behind us? It's hard to say. The long-term effects of
the wartime economy remain difficult to predict so soon after the initial
transients, but it does appear that the price ceilings have already been
reached.

By Popular Request

This is the third in a series of By Popular Request articles,
which will review commonly requested player suggestions for which there is
strong positive support, and review the implications and considerations that
would need to be accounted for if these suggestions were to be implemented.

This week’s subject – Contact and Badge tab management

Tab management is having more/better ways to view the contacts and
badges you have. This could include adding more tabs to allow more distinctions
between the types of contacts and badges that you have. It could also include
more ways to mark difference using the existing structure.

For contacts, having new tabs would make viewing particular types
of contacts easier. Having tabs for contacts that you have completed, contacts
that still have missions for you, contacts that have story arcs for you,
contacts that do not have mission, but still want to give you a new contact,
specialty contacts (like store or detectives), or a personalized contact tab
(for placing whatever contacts you want) all would make the management of
contacts easier for players. Other means of accomplishing this would be to
color code contacts for the various conditions (presently they all have the
same background window color), or to add more "markers", similar to the SA
markers that exist now (yellow for full SAs, red for zone arcs).

Badges already have several tabs, but adding new ones for
Invention related badges, and future additions (perhaps similar to the Vanguard
system of I10) may help alleviate badge clutter. Adding markers or colors for
these might also suffice to identify them easier.

Unfortunately, there appear to be some limitations in the code
regarding the way tabs were set up that might make adding new ones more
difficult. If true, perhaps the other alternatives should be considered as a
quality of life improvement for players. Hopefully the same issue with channels
that has necessitated the Rikti Invasion message spam through administrative
channel will encourage the developers to review the limitations of game
structure that also restrict contacts and badge tabs, and spur the generation
of some function improvements.

A Disaster Wedding

The collective abilities of the NDI kept the skies over Founders
clear and bright. It was truly a special day. The Natural Disaster's very own
Bethany White and Gabriel Alexander were united in holy matrimony this last
Thursday, July 19.

Bethany was aglow in a long sleeve micro-gown with gossamer wings,
nearly eclipsing the handsome Gabriel in his neatly pressed suit and crimson
wings. Many NDI members were in attendance, as well as several of Infinity's
residents. Earth Matron performed the ceremony within the spectacular backdrop
of Williams Square's marbled columns and beautiful fountains.

The rumored whisper of global turmoil had threatened to subdue the
event's preparations, nearly causing a shortage of floral arrangements on the
big day. Resourcefulness and determination won through, and Bethany and Gabe
only had eyes for each other.

With quiet blessings and joyful tears, the happy couple became
one. The blessing was doubled with the couple expecting an addition to their
new family. Their extended family, the NDI, wishes them well, and invites all
of Paragon to send their well-wishes to the Alexander family.

Boudicia's Leather Weather Report

Well, those storm clouds were holding more than rain for us, that
is for sure! Well, a rain of BOMBS and DESTRUCTION. How can I grow my flower
garden under these conditions? We need rain, not nasty Rikti monkeys stinking
up the place! Gah, no more weather reports until this mess is cleaned up.

Advice

Back to front page

IMHO

The third question I asked was how the bill, as it is now, would
affect the heroes personally. Then how they felt it would affect the community
at large.

Skee, a 22 year old defender (level 42, Virtue) has a unique position. ”It
would affect me personally because it would make it difficult for me to do my
job well.” As a Mentor with the Super Group ”The Artful Dodgers”, he sees the
worst and the best of teen heroes. ” As a group we take meta-teens from broken
homes and we tell them they're special. We tell them, and try to teach them
through action, that this power they have isn't a bad thing. We teach them that
it's a good thing and that they should embrace it. How could I tell kids that
when their own country is telling them otherwise? Oftentimes these kids are
forsaken by their friends and family because of their powers, and now their
country and city is going to turn its back on them too? All I see happening is
a bunch of super-powered teens not being able to focus their aggression on
good, so they start joining groups like the Outcasts and Skulls. This will
impact the whole heroing community because instead of reaching these kids at a
young age and raising the next group of heroes we will be turning them away and
creating the next generation of villains. I guarantee that if this goes through
we will see a decrease in registered heroes and an increase in villainous
activity in the next ten years.”

Several of the teen heroes that I interviewed stated that the
proposed new law was not going to stop them from heroing. Even if it meant that
they would be criminals. Jason Collier, the foster father of Nightrayne, a 16
year old Warshade host (level 40, Pinnacle) is fearful, not only for his
daughter but for the heroic community. “For me it would effect the ability of
my daughter being the hero she can be. It would also drain the hero community
at large at some of the up and coming heroes. We lose them if we don't nurture
them and in this town, we can never have too many heroes. Only not enough.”

Billyboy a 16 year old registered tank (level 50, Justice) stated,
“No stupid law is going to stop me from saving some lady from falling from a
fifty story window, or stop me from knocking the faces of a few robot armies. I
might get in trouble, but I think the people I’ve helped would have my back;
nobody would stand for it.” As for the specifics of the bill, Billyboy
said,“There’s nothing good about this for heroes. Not only is it going to
create a huge chunk out of the hero numbers, it’s going to create some crazy
hostility. I know I don’t want to start fighting other heroes who tell me to
stop, but I’m not going to follow some rule when the rule is wrong. I’m here to
do the right thing, not get herded. Plus, I’m a rebel.”

Princess Powerfull, a 16 year old (level 46, Virtue) echoed the
feelings of all the younger heroes. "I think ‘a lot of heroes suddenly finding
themselves told they can’t do it ain't really gonna stop . Course if they have
the whole thing I read ‘bout where they make ya give up your real name n’
stuff. Well that’s just gonna be trouble for a lot of kids n’ other heroes too.
For me, I ain't real worried right now. Most of my friends and people I care
about are registered and can take care a themselves. ‘N if some ganger or
something I busted wants ta come look’n for me once they can find me easier
because I gotta go live a sorta… normal life and stuff, well they gonna be real
surprised that just because I ain't got a license don’t mean I gotta give up
being able ta do what I can do. Not that I could anyhow."

I was able to contact Sate Senator Larry Comwell, the architect of
SS-5327, to get his read on what the heroes of the city were saying. “In light
for recent events, I believe that we should hold off on moving SS-5327 forward.
I mean if this city, our city, doesn't have need of all our heroes now, it
might never need them again.” As for some of the riders on the bill. “There are
several of my fellow Senators who pull strings for Crey and vice versa. As for
the allocation of funds for Aeon Labs, the Geo-thermic power center has cut the
air pollution in the islands by over 50%. We are a big city, we need something
that can provide cheap, clean, reliable power. Aeon seems to have the ticket.”

As of the time of publication, the Rhode Island State Senate was in vote
counting. Only five Senators have voted against killing this bill.

Fashion Forward

It is an exciting time, in the world of fashion. The new lines are
coming out for late summer and early fall. To keep the mayhem to a minimum,
there is an unspoken agreement that Superpowered Fashion Week is before any
other fashion weeks. This allows, not only for the civilian designers to adapt
and borrow from their Super counterparts, but it also allows fashion conscience
heroes, and villains, a chance to place fashion into our busy lives.

Serge, the manager of the Steel Canyon iCON store, was kind enough
to sit down with me and talk about the new goodies from Hero Fashion Week.

“I am very excited about the new offerings for the fall,” said
Serge. “Especially, the new lines from Jay and Ian, the leaders in Heroic
Design.” When asked what the latest trends were, Serge stated that every show
was featuring
rabbit people
, and
bunny girls
. “I think that we well see a big up sweep in fluff tails
this fall, maybe even more Lepus heroes to go with Felines and Lupines we see
every day.”

“What Jay and Ian have come up with in the realm of armor for this
season is amazing. Specifically the
'Proto-Ecto' and the 'Stealth' lines
,”stated Serge, passing me photos
of the lovely Vi, taken by renowned Heroic fashion photographer,
American_Valor.

The Proto-Ecto armor is as functional as it is beautiful to look
at. Striking lines and curves, broken by connecting strips of material, make
this design breath taking. The 'Stealth' look is a brilliant compliment to the
'Justice' line that was introduced last fall. “Hand stitched quilting on this
padded armor is the key,” Serge stated with a gleam in his eye. Personally, the
lines on the 'Stealth' remind me of classic cars, sexy and rugged at the same
time.

With the more civilian minded clothing, Jay and Ian have
introduced a new classic to their line of Skirts / Shorts.
The Pencil skirt
has been sweeping the world for years and now, we
heroes can join in the fashion fray.
Leather
seems to be the material of the season, as skirts in all
lengths and designs featured leather.

Two new hair styles were also feature, predominately, during
fashion week. The looks are short big hair, for both men and women, and a
sweeping up do. “I thought the big unisex hair was just
fabo
,” exclaimed Serge, “and the formal, up do is too cute for words.”
One of the latest accessories is the “tin crown”. Much like the British party
hat is named for, it is cute and playful.

I did manage to slip into the Rogue Isle, to get Face Makers take
on the latest looks. After making my way to Cap Au Dablo, I was told that she
was unavailable. However one of her assistant, Lovely Linda, was able to talk.
“We, at Face Maker, do enjoy the looks coming from the more main stream fashion
houses. Especially the new leather looks and the Ecto-Proto armors.” Linda got
a rather disturbing look in her eye, “I really like the Proto-Ecto armor when
it's done in the right colors, like reds. However, the new hairstyles are
baize. When we introduced the 'visible brain' look, it was an instant classic.
But these,” she said dismissively,” these won't last a single season.” As I was
leaving, Linda asked me to look in on a fashion forward friend of hers in Kings
Row. She stated the
Karl
had a thing for shapely ankles and could be found at a certain
sewer junction.

Dear
Athy,

Dear Athy,

I've been fighting crime a long time. And when I say a long time, I mean a long
time. Weeks go by between visits to my apartment, and my employers have begun
to ask pointed questions. I'd been juggling things fairly well I thought, but
today my girlfriend, who was initially supportive of my efforts to curb
villainy, gave me an ultimatum: hang up the mask or we're through.

How can I maintain my personal life and still keep the City safe from evil?

Signed,

Stretched Thin

I have a question for you. Are you maintaining a personal life? I
mean, really, are you? According to you, weeks go by between visits to your
apartment. Weeks? I’m not sure that you are juggling anything fairly well, but
I am sure that you should try to visit your apartment daily, at least for a
shower and some fresh clothes.

~Athy

try to increase your power of attraction (whether consciously or
subconsciously) during this transit.

Corrupter

excessively, about home life and domestic security. Additionally, there may be
some family "secret" which either comes out in the open or is hidden from

Advice From the X

Greetings boys, girls, and beings of indeterminate gender! It's
LiquidX here, taking a break from his busy mercenary lifestyle to bring you
another dose of Advice! Today, I have two letters for you crazy kids...

"Dear LiquidX

So, I've struck out on my own after that loony, Lord Recluse, was kind enough to
open the doors of the Zig. However, I'm not really into world domination. Is
there an established group I can join? I like the Council's agenda but,
compared to Nemesis, they just aren't that flashy, and Nemesis' agenda doesn't
really do anything for me. Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Not motivated"

Dear Not Motivated,

Normally, I would suggest a career as a Lawyer or Tow truck driver, but from
the sounds of it that’s a little *TOO* evil for you. Instead, I would suggest
joining up as a Henchman for a Mastermind. Although the pay and benefits are
not as good, there’s less work involved, people don't hate you as much, and it
(usually) doesn't require you to sell your soul.

"Dear LiquidX,

The other day I was out heroing (Oh yeah, it’s a verb) and I met a fellow super
hero who proceeded to assist me with the arresting of Crey. After the battle, I
ask him his name, to which he responded “Dark Warlord Two thousand five hundred
twenty two.” Why would somebody give themselves such a name? Is this some sort
of noble ancestry?

Sincerely,

Unholy Secret"

Dear Unholy Secret, It is a little known fact that there is a glitch in the
software at the Paragon City hall that combines a Heroes name with their power
level. It seems in this case that Dark Warlord's power level is not, in fact,
over Nine Thousand.

And there you have it! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to trying to
sell some former 5th Column soldiers some of these fine leather jackets...

State of the Archetype:

Brutes

Brutes do not have states. Brutes do not have facts.

Brutes have fists, or huge mallets made of rock. Some even can
ride lightning to battle. My name is JoJo the Bunny. I am a world renowned
actor on a children's television program shown throughout the Rogue Isles.
Perhaps you have seen me around in costume while I spend my free time doing
what Brutes do. I fight. Brutes fight. Brutes do not have facts.

So ya wanna know about Brutes and what they can do right now...
where they been and where they going? Well, the only thing you really gotta
know about us Brutes is that we live to fight. Us Brutes even build up Fury as
we attack victims. This inner Fury we build up makes us punch hard, really
hard. Our Fury even builds up when victims attack us back. Sadly Fury goes away
quickly when we are not fighting. A Brute who knows what he's doing sticks to
fighting all the time and continues on a furious rampage until no more victims
can be found.

Some weaklings who've seen Brutes in action think that Brutes tend
to get tired very quickly when trying to build up fury. Even some Brutes
who think they have mastered the trade have problems with endurance. They start
fighting and then start huffing and puffing and got no endurance left. Many
people think this is especially true for Brutes who wield massive stone fists
and hammers. Other people think getting tired is especially a problem for us
Brutes who wrap themselves in armors of Dark powers. Brutes getting tired is a
serious issue and is not a laughing matter. Many brutes suffer from low
endurance. Finding small blue pills to correct our dysfunction can sometimes be
difficult.

Allow me to take a moment to show you my skills as an actor and
read this public service announcement that can help Brutes of all levels, sizes
and shapes address the problems of endurance dysfunction, or ED.

“Hello, my name is JoJo the Bunny and today I am going to talk
about endurance dysfunction and how the newly discovered Invention System can
help you. Have you or a Brute you know ever had problems such as the inability
to swing fists in a violent manner? Or been too tired to maintain armors vital
to protecting you from the dangers of combat? Thanks to the University and the
new Invention System you or a Brute you know can overcome these problems.

Allow me to explain in precise mathematical terms exactly how the
Invention System can help you. For a brief summation please hold on and I will
address the issue in simple terms shortly.

In previous times Brutes and other villains were limited to
enhancing their powers by 33% in a single aspect with even level Single Origin
Enhancements. Through the Invention System, with Enhancement Sets a Brute can
enhance multiple aspects of a power with a single enhancement. Brutes
specifically benefit from this new system because many of their melee attacks
would want to be enhanced in four aspects: Damage, Accuracy, Endurance
Reduction and Recharge. With Single Origins only two aspects could be taken to
the nearly 100% enhancement cap, completely neglecting the other 2 aspects.
With Hamidon Origin enhancements, accessible only to very high level Brutes,
the roughly 100% cap could be reached by 3 aspects. With Invention Origin
Enhancements, a savvy Brute using a combination of Enhancement Sets in the
melee powers can reach 80% in all four aspects and even reach the nearly 100%
cap in two of those. This quad-aspect enhancement specifically can be done
using Mako's Bite and Crushing Impact sets.

In summation--”

Ok... what the heck does this junk all mean? I can't read this
garbage I'm a world renowned actor. Where's my chardonnay!... “just read the
next paragraph it'll clear it up” you say... whatever....

“In summation single origins can reach a total % of about 200 over
the four critical aspects. With rare and hard to obtain Hamidon Enhancements
the total can reach about 300%. Thanks to the new Invention system the total
can reach about 350%. Also, by using three Mako's Bites and three Crushing
Impacts a Brute would gain 2.63% more hit-points as well as other set bonuses!
Use this Invention slotting technique over four melee powers, and for a level
50 Brute this hit-point bonus totals about 157 hitpoints.”

Forget it. I can't read this garbage... you nerdy man... yeah
you... did you write this? I can't understand all this number junk. I'm a
Brute. I fight stuff.... uh huh.... yeah...

...so by using Invention enhancements I can fight better in nearly
every way possible? I don't have to choose if I want to hit more or swing more
-- I can just get both?...

... and most importantly I don't have to sacrifice any fighting
power to train my powers to use less of my precious endurance... so this can
help avoid Endurance Dysfunction and allow me to fight longer and stronger...
that's amazing!

...what... You want me to look back into the camera and continue
the interview... oh yeah...

Well all this math talk makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I
need to go beat something up. Or at least watch something get beaten up. I
enjoy watching Brutes who specialize in Energy Melee decimate a single foe in
two quick swings. Other times I enjoy watching huge crowds of weaklings horde
around a Brute who specializes in Electric Melee transform into lightning from
the sky and defeat a whole crowd at once. There's a Brute combat style for
everyone!

Perhaps you may see me or another Brute like me around in Paragon
City one day. I've heard the Rikti may be planning something big. If they do I
expect to see Brutes in the front, fighting hundreds of Rikti at a time.
Especially brutes who armor themselves with electricity, Rikti's energy weapons
and mental attacks have a difficult time penetrating their armor.

All this talk is boring. I need more SMASH! My name is JoJo the
Bunny and remember: Brutes don't have facts.

House
Call

Infinity Server

What
is your home server and why did you end up picking it as your home server?

My home is on Infinity. When I first entered Paragon City, I made
my first hero on Pinnacle for a few levels, where a kind-hearted passing hero
explaining the color-conning system to me and took me around Atlas for a bit
explaining the in's and out's. I later discovered a co-worker had also
purchased City of Heroes, and he was playing with a friend on Infinity that was
already in his early teen levels. I came over to Infinity to join in with them,
and it's been home ever since.

Where do you live?

I reside in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The geographic center of the
state is located about 1/4th of a mile down the road from the house I grew up
in, so I'm pretty easy to pin down. I'd love to move to the Carolinas one day,
but for now, Tennessee is where my roots have grown deep.

What else do you like to do in your free time besides play CoX?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and travelling. Looking forward
to more of that soon, as she just bought me a Kawasaki ZX636, and now she wants
her own bike, too. I'm one lucky fellow. I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie, so
everything from amusement parks to skydiving and hang gliding tops my list of
things I do when the opportunities present themselves. As far as hobbies, I
enjoy overclocking, r/c planes, and all things techie-gadget related. The only
other games I play with any consistancy are Counter-Strike: Source and the
occassional round of Wii Boxing (which my wife easily holds the championship
belt for in our house).

What are your favorite movies?

High Fidelity continues to top my list of movies I can watch
repeatedly and never tire of, along with Good Will Hunting. Jerry Maguire may
seem a little cliché and sappy, but it's another favorite of mine. As far as
comedies are concerned, Super Troopers is probably my current #1 at the moment.
It gets me belly-laughing every time. You want to Dimpisize your meal for a
quarter more?

What are your favorite Books and authors?

"Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank is one of my all-time favorites.
Robert Ludlum's "The Borne Identity" is another. And I'm man enough to admit
that my wife has gotten me to read all of the Harry Potter books, decreeing
that if I didn't, I was henceforth prohibited from asking any questions when
going to see the new movie.

What TV shows do you like to watch?

I'm a big fan of comedy: King of Queens, Friends, Committed
(during its short run), Undeclared (another mid-season axe), Whose Line is it
Anyway? ... the list goes on. The Office and My Name is Earl are probably the
two most current DVR'd shows in our house. As for newer shows, I watched Heroes
and Studio 60 this past season, along with Grey's Anatomy and Jericho. And if
you've never watched it, I'd highly recommend
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
on FX. It's very likely my favorite
comedy ever broadcast - the folks who write that show are comedic geniuses, and
it's nice to have a little edgier comedy on TV.

Do you have any pets?

We are up to our ears in pets. We currently have two four-year-old
cats (Mel Gibson and Squintz), a five-year-old black labrador (Tubby), and four
two-year-old dogs that are half-pug, half-lab that we affectionately refer to
as "pugradors" (Pepper, Buster, Batty, and Flip). A couple of years ago, my pug
(Jack) somehow managed to impregnate my wife's labrador, and the result was
ten of these little guys
. We ended up keeping four of them after the
pug passed away a few months following their birth, and they have become our
favorite little money pits.

How did you get drawn to this game?

The notion of playing a super-hero was very appealing to me.
Spider-man was my childhood hero, and growing up in the Nintendo generation,
console and arcade games bringing all my favorite characters to life is
probably what got me into gaming in the first place. All of my computer gaming
prior to CoH was first-person shooters and flight sims, but I decided I'd break
the mold and join into the MMO world if it meant getting to fly around in
tights and blast bad guys in the name of justice. Everyone needs a good outlet
to sound off witty quips in the name of truth and righteousness before a hearty
pummeling, after all.

What is your favorite aspect of the game?

The community. Regardless of powersets, missions, zones, or
events, the community is what continues to drive this game and transform
Paragon City from a maze of pixels and hit points into a living, interactive
entity. It is what has kept me logging in these past 3+ years, and it continues
to be the driving force behind this game.

Who is your namesake character and what are they?

House Call is my number one character. She's a level 50
Empathy/Energy Defender, and the character I log in with 95% of the time.

Which of all the archetypes and powersets would you say is your
favorite?

Empathy continues to be my favorite powerset. As the only primarly
reactive defensive powerset compared to the others, which are mainly proactive
in their approach to threats, it keeps me on my toes and offers a lot of the
challenges I find enjoyable in CoH's style of gameplay. Plus, the aura buffs
are a bit addicting after a while. As for favorite archtypes, I'd have to go
with Defender for the sheer diversity within the powersets. All of my
characters are Controllers, Defenders, and Blasters, and Defenders are really
the happy median of those three AT's. In the Blaster sets, I like Fire and Ice,
and for Controllers, I think Earth has been my favorite set out of them.

Your least favorites?

I'm not much of a melee attacks person, so Scrappers and Tanks
haven't ever been something I could commit to. I probably would have enjoyed
them a bit more if I had played them back in the earlier issues of CoH, but by
the time I got around to trying some out, the defense of scrappers and damage
of tankers had been toned down a little more than what was enjoyable for
myself.

Do you prefer Heroside or villain side?

All of my active characters are heroes. I think CoV is
aesthetically beautiful, but it's a bit too hard on my system at times to play
as smoothly as I'd like, and I still find myself fighting bad guys in my mind
when I do try to spend a little time in the Isles. I'm a hero, through and
through.

What would you say is your greatest strength in the game?

Paragon
City Search and Rescue
, without a doubt. As I said, community is my
favorite aspect of this game, and the PCSAR supergroup forms the epicenter of
that ideal for me with their service-oriented gameplay and community outreach.
They are the backbone to all I have accomplished and the one constant that
keeps me logging in every time. Plus, it never hurts to have a group of
twenty-something Emps at your beck and call when you want to play "Invincible
Blaster."

Your greatest weakness in the game?

It would probably be that I played my last 30 levels of my
Fire/Fire Blaster with that same crew of Emps constantly. When I solo, Rise of
the Phoenix can't recharge fast enough. Aside from that, I like to be a little
too close to the action for my own good at times, but that's just part of the
fun.

What zone is your favorite?

Perez Park remains my favorite zone to this day from the first
time I stepped foot inside its gates. The woods always held a certain sense of
mystery and danger, and it's where I first encountered both the excitement of a
hazard zone and a hero whose sole mission in the game was to assist other
heroes. That first day in Perez Park completely changed my gameplay experience
and my expectations of what CoH would become, and I am enamored with those dark
trails and open waters to this day.

What is your favorite Storyline in the game?

Of all the arcs I've played through completion, I probably enjoyed
the Revenant Hero Project the most. Crey Protectors both fascinated and
terrified me the first time I ran around a corner and bumped headlong into one,
so finding out their origins was an interesting arc to go through. Plus, I
enjoyed the "Doctor" and the twists that went along with her (trying not to
give away any spoilers here).

What one feature would you like to see added to the game?

More powersets. Of all the new content that is created each issue,
new powersets are the most few and far between of the additions. I also
wouldn't mind seeing some new methods of travel thought up. For the
villain-side, I'd like to see more starting contacts for new characters.

What advice do you have for any new players to the game?

Find a group of friends you enjoy playing with - whether it's an
organized Supergroup or just a group of people you enjoy teaming with, it's one
of the biggest keys to keeping this game fun and upbeat. Remember that everyone
- hero, villain, level 50, or level 1 - is a part of this community and a real
person behind the screen. Treat other players as your neighbor and friend, and
this game will only continue to get better.

Any closing comments?

If you're on Infinity and ever need a hand, don't forget you can
jump into the global channel "911" and ask for assistance. Rezzes, teleports,
healing assistance with a mission you just can't complete - Paragon City Search
& Rescue is always here to help.
