I try to post as often as I can on DA, and I'm continually fascinated by which pieces atttract the most favs. It's hard to guess what people are going to like, but on that site at least, there seem to be 4 main predictors, and I'll rank 'em in order of importance:
1. Female subject matter. It's overwhleming--pics of girls get WAY more attention, and it's not because the viewership skews male. If anything, there might be more girls than guys on DA. Go figure.
2. Color. Not too surprising, I suppose. Who wants b&w when you can have the full spectrum? 
3. Well-known characters. Even the best-drawn pieces can be overshadowed by something with 'X-men' in the title.
4. Fantasy. The more other-worldly the better. And it makes sense: fantasy subject matter seems to inspire creativity and imaginative solutions in almost everyone's art.
I've only been on DA a few months now, but that's my current theory on how a piece gets popular. What do you guys think?
On a side note, here're some of my favs. Every single one's a 'hot chick' piece, so be forewarned. But I find that it's the most challenging subject to draw, and that's why I'm always so impressed people who do it well:

I've favored a few commissions of (unknown to me) CoX characters just because I like the work. It's really only a testment to the artist and how he or she brought the game character to life. As a player, I recognize the costume elements and always like seeing how someone put their twist on them.
I notice that my first commission has been favored a fair number of times. Considering the liberties that Rantz took with the character (with my full support), I know it has like zero to do with the character and everything to do with his talent. Still, I get a kick out of it.

Just browsing through my favorited forum topics and stumbled across this. It scares me now to think how large my favorites list must be. I think I might have broken the dA software or something because sometimes stuff falls off of my favorites list and I have to go back and re-favorite it.
