GIMP - My time has come...

I think I'm really going to do this time, I'm going to get GIMP to replace my poor little Picture It.
But of course, I have to ask questions first:

First: Is is any better than Picture It? If not, I might as well stick with what I got.

Is it simple, but with great potential? All I really need to be able to do is color my scanned drawings and add shadows here and there. Not shading, shadows. I play around with my World of--- Uhh... Diablo... Yeah, my World of Diablo model veiwer, and I need to be able to add some shadows on the ground once I got my models in the scene.

Will it make my 'puter's head a'spode? I have a sufficient computer, but I wouldn't be suprised if anything was too powerful.

And also: Does anyone here have it/use it? Comments?

Thank youse.

GiMP is pretty powerful, but I advise looking into it a bit. Many things that you might take for granted in your current prog might be totally different or awkward (or missing!) from GiMP. The good thing about GiMP though is that you can easily install/make/get/whatever new scripts to do many neato things.

I find that GIMP is like photoshop, but slightly more confusing at first. Then all of the sudden it hits you, and you're like, "oh, I get it now"

also, Gimptalk is a great resource.

(Also, two Luchadores in one thread!)

Behold! This thread is automagic awesome WIN.

Thread closed. 2 out of 2 luchadores not only cannot be wrong, it's physically impossible for them to do so.

It's much like LP said... you get confused by all the widgets and buttons, going "[censored]? This was so much easier in <insert program>" then you crest the learning curve, and it becomes blindingly simple. I take longer making stuff in GiMP because I find so many different and fun ways to do stuff, that I get caught up in application instead of execution.

If you can afford the $52 to download the basic version ($69 for the deluxe) I recommend Open Canvas, which has many of Photoshop's abilities, streamlined for comic artwork.
