A Cosmic Sketch

It's not much, but it is a sketch .

I've been doing a lot of sketching and doodling, mostly heads and gesture drawings. Usually, when I have my sketchpad out, I'll draw whatever pictures happen to be on a webpage or whatever.

I tried drawing Sister Psyche from the banner at the top of the board, but had huge problems making her nose look like a nose.

This sketch came from an email...

But anyway...

Most of the gestures I did didn't turn out very well, but I think this one did. I found a website with a bunch of bodybuilders in various poses.

is the first one Borat?

It is. From a GameSpy Daily email that arrived yesterday. I had to fudge some of the left side of the sketch because the image has a big conversation bubble that says "Very nice. ." covering it up.

Did some sketching today. The first is a sketch of my Fire controller, Little Firefly. Overall, I'm not very happy with it, but I think it's an improvement over what's come before. It's still incredibly rough, and a lot of the page turned a bit grey during the copious amounts of erasing going on.

Unhappy with how the head turned out (especially the hat), I decided to do a sketch of just the head. I think overall, her head is too long and I mudged up some of her features, but I'm very happy with how the hat turned out.

I had my second art class last night. Did a blind contour drawing, an upside down line drawing in charcoal, and then a perspective drawing of a box with an apple sitting atop it.

All in all, more frequent sketching and the class are helping (at least I think so) so that I'm seeing improvements.

Looking at some of the phenomenal artwork posted here, it can sometimes get a little daunting and feel like I'm never going to get where I'm going to be. But, I know the only way I'm ever going to get there is the same way they did, keep on working at it.

That's the spirit! While I do think that drawing takes some natural talent (all artistry does, you need to just have a feel for what looks good, composition, etc) It is also a skill, meaning something that can be learned. I think you're off to a great start!

The sketches are nice! You just gotta keep on practicing and practicing.

Keep it up man. More practice = more xp. I do and redo my sketches at least twice every time. And have been doing it for what, 30 years now?

Thank you very much for the comments. While things don't exactly come out exactly as I envision, I am having a lot of fun. Encouragement here helps a lot, that's for sure.

So a couple sketches from today.

While I'm not sure if it looks anything like who it's supposed to be, I am very pleased that it does look so very much like a person.

Where I work (though, probably nearly everyone else could say the same) there are always pigeons wandering around. So, on a whim I decided to try to draw a pigeon:
