Artistic Knowledge Thread: A concept - need ideas
its a good idea Mist. one that could possibly help out all involved. thumbs up from my perspective.
in regards to critiquing work in general...when it comes to "new" artists I go into it with the understanding that they know thewy are new. I avoid squashing them but I will find something that "stands out" imo...and pass it along. otherwise I try and be encouraging as the only way to get better is to keep drawing. when it comes to the more established artists...well...I basically have the same viewpoint on critiques. heh
in regards to a specific thread made for helping out artists, I do like it but it may be a little difficult to find traction with. the hardest thing being that in order to offer solutions it helps to see some reference pics. while general help can be posted in order to specifically help an artist on the things they need to refine we need to see the work in question...
as a general "help thread" or possible "things to think about when doing art work" I like the thought behind it... ~

I was thinking for those that wanted to participate >.> they could link their photobucket/deviant art site <@_@> that way we'd be able to view the set of work as a whole.

aah...link to common site then say..."critique me". gotcha.
should work...but the question is how many people take part and how indepth they are willing to go with said critiques.~

Well, that's why I started this thread <,< To get people's opinions on the thread that I would create in response to this thread being well liked <'x'>

I think it's an excellent idea, Squirrel, and one that should work pretty easily.

I got her!! She's right here!
Hehe cool <^_^> I'm glad to get some comments; I just noticed some people seemed to be struggling, and I think its just that when your only commentary is piece by piece, its hard to put it together and change your overall style to improve as a whole. (Sometimes it works - but not always, ya know? <,<
If a few more people think its a good idea, I'll start the thread later <'x'> <- will go first

uhhh derek that doesn't work. You'll need a photobucket account to do that. It's actually linking me to my images I have on imageshack.
Oh. But I've seen people link to all their images on imageshack...
How'dya do that?
<@_@> Well, I guess we could just go ahead and use this thread if we want... I was planning to make a 'real' version <@.@> works for me either way!
Not sure how to use Imageshack derek <;_;>

Yeah that does work! Yay learn something new everyday...didn't know I could link to a gallery on there.
Psst. Also if you notice when you click on a pic, there is that line there that says 'Link to a friend', just copy paste that and there ya go.
Soo... Do we start Crits now?
Yeah, I think now is good hehe <^_^> I was going to starta new thread, but I think this is going to be good just as it is! (Thanks everyone!)
This is my Photobucket - All comments welcome <~_~>b Alot of this work you've obviously seen, but comments on the body as a whole is definitely going to help me as I go forward.
I'll use another post to look at Derek's work <@_@>

Okies Derek <^_^> In looking your stuffs over, here are some things I personally notice:
1; you have a decent start; but I think most of it you just work too fast, I mentioned that in another thread already >< But I really think you could do great things if you can slow down hehe <^_^> putting out a ton of work is great - but putting out half as much work and doing it twice as good is even better! <^.~>b Speed will come in time even if you're working for quality.
2; To get more specific, do you pencil your work at all, or does it start as inkwork? I can't tell from what I'm seeing, but that's pretty standard since you'd remove any pencil marks before putting it up.
I'm *guessing* not though; ignore this advice if I'm off! <,<;
I recommend doing one of two things - one of which I can tell you how to do, the other of which you'll have to find someone else to explain >< cause its not how I do it; but it certainly works for some folks.
The first option, is to do a light not-too-detailed pencil sketch, starting out with a basic stick-figure frame. I'm obviously not the best in the world >.> But there are other people who do it this way as well. The idea is to build a complex stick figure, and then flesh it out. Ie: you start with the backbone, then add a line at about 3/4-2/3s the way up where the shoulders will be (this can change with style, body proportion, angle, etc...)
Then another line where the hips would be
From there you take lines from each shoulder (which you can easily indicate with a circle at each joint), and extending to the elbows then wrists and hands. (You actually do pretty decent hands, rough, but you've got a decent basis on them - which is far better than I can say for myself - I *suck* at hands)
Do the same for the legs, a line from the hips to the knees, then knees to ankles, then ankles to feet.
All you gotta do then is give the stick figure some meat (consider the lines you've done already to be your 'bones') - after that, you dress em <@_@>b
This is how I personally draw, I'm not great at it or anything, but its what I found has worked for me - and it helps give a better sense of proportion.
The other way is gestural drawing - I know only vague bits about it; it seems to be a technique that relies on keeping the pencil moving so that while you may make minor mistakes - they blend into the picture and end up adding depth rather than subtracting from the picture.
I really can't tell you how to do it though cause I don't draw that way >.> Someone else can explain it much better
Anyways, I think mostly you've just jumped into the deep end (inks, computer coloring) before getting some of the more basic foundational stuff down (simple pencil sketches, proportions).
Hardly an uncommon thing <'x'>
I think you've got alot of ability though <^_^> its just a matter of practice and learning some techniques that don't just immediately pop out at people as 'obvious' (The whole skeletal drawing system I only figured out due to art books >.> - I never would have learned without em!)
<. .> Anyways, I hope that helps some Derek <^.^>m

I don't just jump into inks.
I do pencils, or draw with my tablet first.
I don't do the stick figure thing you mentioned, but I do do something according to shapes. I draw the characters first, no clothes, no details, and try to make them out of shapes to get the proportions right. I should get out a ruler and get deeper into the proportions, though, you're right.
And yes I do work too fast. I need to work on this stuff. Thanks, Squirrel!
Hope it helps man! <^-^> Keep practicing! I think you can do great things, just keep at it <^,~>b (oh, and if you start taking art classes - for the love of all that is holy listen to them <;_;> I didn't. I feel like such a putz these years later for it.)

yes listen to them, absorb, learn, then do your own thing later :P but you will have better foundation that way and will still do things 'correctly'.

critique me if you will, im ussualy defensive of alot but hey, ill put it down so i can get better with this...
Alrighty my fellow art forum-goers <@_@> I had a thought earlier today; and its sorta blossomed and expanded since.
My thought is this - we get alot of wonderful people here, including many who don't draw themselves; we also get *alot* of folks who are just starting. Goofing around and practicing in queues helps - but I notice something... its hard to critique someone's work adequeately when they're just starting out.
I at least, feel like if I go to easy on them, they won't get the information they need (I'm always polite and kind <;_;> but when I make 35 different suggestions it feels like too much) - however if I *DO* give them enough info, I fear squashing someone's dreams; or much worse - making them defensive. (A defensive person becomes much harder to help <;_;> and its especially bad when it feels like its your fault.)
So anyway - here's my idea:
This thread will allow us, as a forum, to give eachother hints, tips, suggestions - and more importantly be very straightforward in what we're trying to say: all without 'invading' someone's thread.
The idea here is more to look at an artists overall tendancies, skills, what they do right on a general and broad level, and where there is room for improvement. Sometimes its something simple - like needing to take more time with your pieces; or not being super-sketchy with a pen when you're going for smooth lines (I've been guilty of both of these).
Obviously - participation in this thread is wholly voluntary and I'd ask people not to bring someone up until that person actually appears in this thread.
The idea here again - isn't to look at any singular work; but instead to look at an artists portfolio and tendencies on the whole. Obviously, there will be some differences that are purely opinion or stylistic, and I think we can recognize those pretty well; but I think this will help everyone improve. After all, what applies to one person's work may just apply to your own as well! <@_@>
So; before I get started or anything, do we think this is a good idea? Or a really stupid one? Again, wholly voluntary, its not like someone would go pick out a random artist on the board, bring them up here, and we discuss their work - its only the people actively participating in the thread that I'd want discussed; because we don't want people feeling picked on, rather, this is meant to strengthen us all.
<. .>; Ok so really, what do we think? >.>;
