PC Death... my apologies :/

My PC died utterly last night. My friend had built it for me with a RAID5 Setup, which ate itself last night, literally. My BIOS doesn't even detect the drives, only my old backup drive. So today I'm going to go out and install a new hard drive and install windows on that... that's the good news.

The bad news is that all of my commission work, my digital files are as of now, considered lost. It means to me that I've lost up to 15 years worth of work I had scanned in, all of my reference (morgue) files...

So I wont know how much I've lost or not lost until my friend gets back from the East Coast on the 22nd.

This does NOT affect TA's commission, or anyone elses commissions that are in the works.

Fallen Skye, I've lost your files (for now)... I have the prints of your first piece, but will wait until the machine is revived to hopefully get back Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend for you. I will send that one seperately to your address at no extra cost.

I am currently on my MAC laptop, and painting Rowr's commission.

Commissions will not stop, things are just a bit up in the air as of currently.

Thanks for your patience everyone.

<_ _> Sayterra that's terrible <;_;> i'm so sorry to hear that.

Something I'm doing as a "Just in case" measure that may help you - I'm using a 500mb flash drive to store my artwork. Not the stuff that's just scans mind you - but stuff that's digital work that literally only exists in the computer >.<

I know that doesn't help you this minute though <_ _>

Sorry to hear that With Raid5, if only one drive failed, you should be reasonably okay and recover most of your stuff. And nice avatar.

There should be a way to recover the files, but it will likely cost. When I had an HD meltdown that ate all my music, there was a program called R TT (i think) that I used and it found everything on the hard drive even stuff I never knew was on the drive and every time i had moved and re named files.

It MAY work, even though my comptuer keeps asking me if I want to format the drive, I was still able to recover it. I'd hate to see it all be gone gone.

Why're you apologizing to us, Say? It should be us offering our condolences. I doubt anyone will be miffed that you lost the artwork even though you took plenty of steps to protect it.

But to back up what Sagittary said, if you're in a RAID5 array and you didn't lose all of the drives (highly unlikely), you should be able to recover your stuff.

ARGH! So sorry Sayterra. I know that feeling all too well. I still have my old dead HD behind me, mocking me with all the old artwork I can never recover. Dang hard dricve crashes!

Thanks everyone. I'm not a technophile in the least. All I know is that the Raid Drivers are supposedly the ones that caused the problem, and that as of now, they've eaten themselves utterly due to whatever reason they did such. Computers and I have a love and hate relationship. I'll let folks know how things turn out as the develop. After I finish up with Rowr's painting, I'll try to load my scanner onto my laptop so I can scan at least with this machine.

Again thanks for all the advice and support. You guys are great

sorry to hear that. I remember when my HD got messed up and I had to replace it 6 months after I bought my computer. hope everything turns out fine for you.

Well Damn Say that really does suck!

I had the same thing happen to me and I lost all my high rez files I had stored for my collection with all the pieces I had recieved.

So I know the feeling kinda. Not exactly as it wasn't me who did all the art so I am sure it really sucks for you having put all that time into it. Hopefully you can recover the files like a few have mentioned and ya don't lose everything! *crosses fingers for you*

On the other hand I am rather pleased the TA commission won't be effected. Still I feel your pain! Good luck hun!

My dad recently had something similar to this happen, and he was nervous about losing 20 something years of paper money archives (he collects and archives old money), but luckily for him the data was retreivable and copied onto his laptop, so best of luck to you and I hope to much was not lost. Don't lose hope!

Just the drivers? Well, your files are probably fine then assuming both (or however many) of your HDs are also intact and working. RAID5 offers a level of redundancy so even if one drive fails, there's enough data and parity for the RAID controller to rebuild it all. So if your backup/second HD is okay, you should be able to recover your stuff. 'course, not knowing the specifics, I can't say much.

PC is alive with new hard drive for now. No recovered files yet, must wait until my friends get back from the East Coast.

The horror?

NO GRAPHIX PROGRAMS YET.

I don't have Illustrator at this point, which is what I use to ink with, so I may have to do some traditional inks for a change OR with the method I've been trying out in Photoshop. Sorta sketchy ink, the kind that's on TA's commission....

We'll see. I need to get work done. Bills to pay and food to buy, ya know

ouch! Sorry to hear about that!

Seriously, hold on to the drive, at some point you should be able to find someone who can at least transfer it's contents to anouther drive. It's not all lost yet.
