Great, simple introductory guide. Thanks for laying this out so neatly!

My Brute? He likes to SMASH!

My nitpick:

This means that slotting the normal one Accuracy, five Damage enhancements is not the most optimal strategy.

CoV was introduced with ED in place. Therefore, one acc, 5 dmg isn't optimal *anyway.* 1 acc, 3 Dmg, and either another acc, a secondary, a recharge or end redux - unless you just want to find high level TOs to fill the slots so as not to waste money on 5% SOs.

It all depends on the exact powers of the brute of course. But I have a hunch that a good slotting for a brute would 2 acc, 2 dmg, 2 end/2 rch/2<effect>, where <effect> signifies any secondary effect like disorient, knockback etc.

As the dps rises rather rapidly I think it is not really necessary to slot most attacks for damage, but rather for accuracy (at least those that should end the fight), and the remaining 2 slots would be slotted in any combination of end redux, recharge or effect.

But I might be mistaken, I do not normally play brutes.

Main Hero: Flame Blade (Scrapper lvl 50; Katana/Regeneration)
Main Villain: Elenor Seahawk (Mastermind lvl 44; Necromancy/Poison)
My Arcs: #337278: Learning Curve
Fight my Brute: SMASH

Laz, any chance of you updating this to add the new sets?

Not likely as I don't have nearly as much free time now as I did back when I first wrote this. Plus this guide was more about the Brute archetype in general, so what you see here applies pretty well to all of the primaries and secondaries that are now available. There might be some big differences with Super Reflexes being added but I have not played that set to know if there is. I have played Electric Meelee, Electric Armor, Dual Blades, and now started a Mace/Willpower. For those sets I have not been using any significantly different playstyle than I have before, leading me to conclude that no special update is really needed to the guide for those sets.

This is also why I will not update this guide to include IOs. Partly because they do not introduce any major changes in the way the AT plays, but also because there are now so many possible ways to slot a character that I might as well just write a book.

If you want information specific to a powerset, or slotting advice, there are many guides that take care of that. This will remain a generalist guide to the Brute archetype itself.

I have reposted this guide at Paragon Wiki. I'll be updating it with info on Willpower, Dual Blades, Super Reflexes, Electric Melee, Electric Armor, Shields, Mace, Axe, and such as I get time to do so.

Brutes are mammals.
A Brute's job is to flip out and SMASH people.
