Open Letter To Statesman

((I know this forum is the RP forum, but I still feel I should say that this is an In Game letter and not part of the deluge of "Stateman is teh suck because of ED" posts ))

Dear Statesman,

You’re the kind of man that few ever meet, the majority of which are ne’er-do-wells who usually deserve the unbridled closeness of your fist to their face. You’re the kind of man the little boys want to become when they grow up. Square-jawed, tall, fit, you’re a regular all-American hero. Heck, comic books should be written about you. Yadda yadda.

I’ll keep this simple. I don’t like you.

Sometimes you meet someone and before you have a chance of getting to know them, you know, deep down, that you don’t like them. Maybe it’s their clothes, their haircut. Maybe it’s their mannerisms, maybe a whiny voice. Maybe it’s just a gut feeling. But at the end of it, you know that you just don’t like them. This is how it is with you.

When I first saw you, I knew I didn’t like you.

Over my time as a hero, I came to appreciate my gut-feeling as a prophetic early warning system. Your actions have spoken for you quite clearly.

Yes, let’s not forget that you fought back the Rikti while I was running scared from some Hellions because I was just Joe American back then.

Yes, let’s also not forget that you fought in wars well before my father was even a gleam in my grandmother’s eyes. Time and time again, you have proven your worth as a protector of Justice. A protector of Paragon City. Nobody faults you there. When the going gets tough, the tough call Statesman.

It’s the little things, nagging little things that hold no weight on their own, but over time they just build up. For example, where the heck are you? I’ve seen the other members of the Freedom Phalanx almost daily. I got a chance to work with Positron, (who, though I thought he was a cool guy at first, turns out to be a sadistic bag of bolts), Manticore (a really funny guy), Back Alley Brawler, and Ms. Liberty to name a few. The latter two take time out of their busy day to greet and guide fledgling heroes! Living legends, here in Paragon City!

Where are you Statesman? I always see you on TV, so you’re not off in some faraway fantasyland. I doubt you’ve retired since you’re always in the spotlight. It seems you never miss a chance to shine that helmet for the cameras.

And speaking of which, what kind of person wears a metal medieval helmet over a spandex bodysuit? How gauche!

Truth be told, this steady trickle of things may be nothing in of itself, just Statesman being himself. That is, until it’s painted under a different light. What I was not prepared for was the unspeakably selfish greed you’ve displayed to the world.

Yes, the Calvin Scott incident. Sister Psyche did much for Paragon City during the Rikti invasion. As you said, “Many made the ultimate sacrifice, but it was worth it.” Sister Psyche was one such hero. I never agreed with her near villainous methods though. She forced herself into Aurora’s psyche and took over. She forced Malaise to “be a good boy.” This is an affront to all that is good. One’s mind is one’s last sanctuary and she’d violate that sanctity time and time again.

Enter Calvin Scott, Aurora’s husband. All he wanted was his wife back. Here you have a mere “mortal” competing for the affection of his wife against the legendary Statesman! That’s a pretty tough competition, I mean, you’re a Tanker with superhuman strength and stamina! Anyone in his shoes would feel inadequate! Couple that with the fact that the few times he had his wife to himself, the two would never be alone (if indeed it was Aurora talking to him). He wanted his wife back. He didn’t go to you, sure. But doesn’t it strike you odd that other heroes found absolutely no problems helping him out? I wasn’t aware of his plan at the time but would have doubled over backwards to help him. I respect Sister Psyche, but her methods of prolonging her life by stealing someone else’s is plain wrong. What made you the bad guy is you punished him. “As soon as this is over, you’re out of the hero business Mr. Scott. Do I make myself clear?” Of course! You could have put him through a wall by flexing your little finger. What did he do wrong Statesman? Does it hurt to have to look at the future with the uncertainty that us mere “mortals” have to?

Incidentally, though I still see Aurora, I haven’t seen Calvin in a long time. Perhaps, after going through all these efforts of getting his wife back, he decided it was time to skip town. Or maybe he’s a stay-at-home husband now. Who knows?

It’s because of stuff like this that I don’t mind saying that I took quite the joy in taking down Tyrant, your alter ego. Possibly more than should be fair.

And here you are in the news, once again. Do you carry pictures of yourself in your wallet?

If you are the epitome of what’s good, then the “other side” can’t be so bad. You used to be the reason a citizen would aspire to be a hero. You’re now the reason a hero would contemplate turning to a life of crime.

Think on that.

Although I'm not quite sure if I like you letter or not. I am relieved to find that this is not a post derailing Statesman the person. ((RP)) You do raise several points and you may have just helped convert a hero to the anti statesman movement

Sir, your ignorance astounds me. I do agree, Statesman is fairly camera-happy (so am I), but that does not mean he is some kind of menace. The Calvin Scott incedent was totally different from what you portray. Sister Psyche was dying, and Aurora selflessly offered herself to keep Psyche alive. Psyche did not force herself into Aurora's mind. Malaise's situation was also different, as he was a villain, and a dangerous one. He could have leveled Paragon City, and killed hundreds. Granted, Sister Psyche did force herself into his mind, but she had no choice. She had to stop him, for the good of the people, and when she entered his mind, she found just a tormented soul in need of help! What else could she do, hmm? If she hadn't helped him, well, look at what happened to the Praetorian Malaise. As for Statesman not showing his mug out there, he's a world-wide celebrated hero, he can't show his face without being mobbed by fans!
He told Calvin Scott that because it was dangerous. Who knows what Calvin could have inadvertently done to his wife?
Statesman is a good guy, all things considered. Granted, his methods are odd, but he is a hero. You have to respect the man's devotion to protecting the world. Personally, I would be happy to fight alongside him anytime. Oh, and also, don't diss the helm, it's his trademark, almost.

P.S, Are you related to J. Jonah Jameson?
