((What do you consider appropriate in-game RP?))

After seeing a plot a strange character started, I got into a discussion with some others about it. I won't go into details (because that's not what this thread is about), but I found it to be inappropriate subject material for the game.

So, I'm wondering, what do you all consider to be appropriate subject material for RP? What do you consider inappropriate subject material? Where do you draw the line?

Note: I'm not trying to start a grass-roots campaign against these people, I'm just curious as to some others' opinions on the matter.

In-game... keep it teen rated. Too easy to get on people's bad side if you go much further than that.

On the official forums - I'd say about the same. There's probably more 'license' for mature topics here, but still, it's geared toward the game. So...

That leaves you 3rd-party sites such as SG forums, blogs, collaborative writing projects, IRC, instant messaging etc. With those, you're only limited to the terms of service for each service/provider. Granted, it can be hard to coordinate RP in an external application while still in-game... but if you're wanting to push boundaries beyond what the ESRB says is OK, that's pretty much what you're looking at.

I won't go into a comprehensive list of what's Ok and what's not. That's been done to death, it always invokes 'debate', and ultimately people assume things about you that may or may not be true because of the position you advocate (not by what you actually RP).

That's my take, anyway.

Yeah, what the Professor said pretty much sums it up well.

I third the Professor's comments, and add that with writing you have a lot more control. With in-game RP, you have no control over the other players... and who knows what kind of liberties, strange bents, or weird notions they'll inject into your SL.

Hence... For writing I keep it PG-13. For RP, I set the bar even lower.

My personal policy:
Public RP - Keep it Teen, as said. If you don't know all the people you're RPing with, you shouldn't go into things that might offend someone.

SG RP - So long as you've been given the clear to do so can go as far as rated M.

Private RP - What you do with RP friends is your own business, I don't have a limit here.

I agree with the Prof and Steele -- with one exception:

I think that running storylines that would qualify for M-rated or R-rated status are fine in the appropriate places -- as long as the people you're playing with realize that and understand that they need to act with maturity and common sense. Any time I sit down to run a storyline containing more mature themes, I explicitly ensure that all those involved are OK with things and I offer them a chance to bow out if they so desire.

And that same exception comes with a rule of its own: you should *know* the people you're RPing with. For example: With the Dawn Patrol, I know we have members who are under 18 in the group, so I tend to keep my RP rated at about a PG to PG-13 level unless I'm with members whom I *know* are over 18 AND are okay with a higher rating on their RP.

When I am with new people, regardless of age, I keep my RP decidedly PG rated, and more often than not, G.
