As a lover of DC Comics, where you've got 8 different pantheons of gods, all knowing magicians, anthromorphs, a angst ridden hero in black, a go whose invulnerable to everything but glowing red and green rocks and a beefed up cheek with a lasso/bondage fetish.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OVERBOARD! 
Seriously now; do I think we need more normal super heroes? Hell yes, I'm tired of the magic wizards, the uber ninjas, and the anthros/furries being the majority; but if that's what other RPers enjoy most? More power to them!
I have 7 characters on Virtue, 3 of them are classic heroes, tights, capes and all; and the other 3 are less traditional, but still more common types ( two of them are from the same line as WonderWoman and Thor, mythical beings from on high, and ones a mythical creature). So you see, I run the gambit here; I'd be a hypocrit to complain about one over another.
I do PREFER the traditional heroes, but this is a comic book world, there's room for everything here!
It all depends on what you do with them...
Why play someone of an opposite gender? Different age, race, background?

I don't play to get away...I play so that I can act out what I cannot be in real life, and that is a super-gun toting super-soldier spanish neo-conquistador that crushes all crime in the city with a ruthless vengeance! 
I frankly don't care if people make cat/dog people...I wouldn't necessarily recommend CoH for that kind of stuff, but hey, if they want to pay for CoH (thereby keeping the company in business and keeping CoH in my hands), that's fine with me. Make whatever you want. It's not like I HAVE to rp with you.
i've noticed that alot of the role playing going on has been more people rp'ing "Sexy Kitty" or "Lil Puppy" than "Captain Awesome" or "Ice Queen".
