Diamond Star Casino
Las Vegas, Nevada
October 25th, 2004

Diamond Star is know for it's high rollers and upscale clientele. This night the casino would play host to powerful and wealthy businessmen from around the globe. Jen Preston just wanted to go home and relax after a long day. She was Head of Surveillance for the casino's security force. Her boss asked her to stay late and provide extra security after the game. These high stakes games were never announced in advance for fear of planned theivery, so she was only notified 2 hours before her shift ended. She agreed to pick up the extra hours.

The game went on several hours after the casino officially closed, so security was relatively quiet. An nervous looking Asian man was losing his shirt, so her interest was drawn in.He was almost $25 mil in the hole, when he called the manager over to discuss something. He held out a wooden box and showed it to the table boss. Papers were handed along with and several people got in to examine the documents. All the other players at the table had no objections to the pause in game, or the collatoral being cashed in....more money for them. Since this wasn't a Table Stakes game, the Asian was issued $35 mil in chips on the spot. Her boss looked up at the camera and picked up his radio. "Jen...can you come down here and make sure this gets to the vault? It's very important to Mr. Tzu." She made her way to the playing area as Mr. Tzu lost yet another hand.

She relieved her boss of the item and signed several release forms. The vault was 4 stories below and took a while to reach through silent corridors. She was issued a 9mm handgun but refused to carry it. She relied on her 15 years of boxing training she recieved from her grandfather. He was a Navy Boxing Champion for several years and taught her how to defend herself from any kind of situation. He passed away 2 years before she came to Las Vegas. He would be proud of how his little girl grew up. Jen's fond memories were cut short by static on her radio handset. "...kssshhhhhhkkkk...Jen......et out!!!...un for your life!!" Her boss Ed never raised his voice above a calm whisper in the 2 years she had known him. Whatever situation happening topside was very bad. The static ceased as she responded, "What's happening Ed, please tell me!" Gunfire erupted over the handset and screams of several men could be heard. An answer came to her question...not one that she would ever forget. An unearthly whisper lingered in the emptiness of the vault over the radio. "Give me the stone..." She made her way out of the vault, and out the security entrance. She hopped in her car just as the casino erupted in flames. An earthshaking rumble shook the parking lot as she fumbled for the ignition. She stopped quickly at her apartment to get her cat and a change of clothes before making her way East. She only stopped 3 times for gas before she passed the sign she was looking for. Paragon City 12 miles. Population 286,586 (201,216 Heroes).

She found a cheap hotel in an area called Kings Row. She knew this would be a place to lay low for a while, at least until she could get more information. She still had the wooden box, half afraid of what was inside. After settling in her new surroundings she opened it. A massive black diamond on a dark metal pendant lay on a black silk cloth. The cloth had silver characters woven within the fine silk. They looked Japanese, but she wasn't certain. She sketched a few of them out on a piece of paper and took them to a Chinese take-out place down the street from her hotel. The elderly lady who worked there was very helpful. She identified them as Tsoo characters, and told her of a man named Thao Ku in Skyway City who could translate Tsoo writing. She didn't trust the lock on her hotel room, so she pocketed the pendant. She felt a bit odd with a $35 million dollar piece of jewelry in her jean pocket, but it somehow felt empowering. After all, diamonds are a girl's best friend...when strange entities aren't killing people and burning down casino's looking for them.

She made her way to Skyway City. It was larger than Kings Row, but not much cleaner. She set off for the street that Thao Ku was known to frequent. It was 6 blocks away but seemed like 6 miles. Not many pedestrians were down this particular street and it was making her wary of any sign of trouble. She saw a group of green skinned men roughing up a homeless guy. She was outnumbered 3 to 1, but the homeless guy was really getting worked over. She yelled out for them to stop, and they immediatly focused on her. In a split second, the main green guy cleared the distance between them. He stood a good 2 feet taller then Jen. He looked down with a nasty toothy grin, and grumbled "You got problem with Trolls, puny girl?!?" The "homeless" guy took the opportunity to make his attack, lightning bolts flew from his hands and zapped a Troll. "Outcasts will rule Skyway!!!" screamed the homeless man. Jen took the distraction as a chance to make a break for it. The green brute grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back towards him. She felt a calming wave settle over her, and in one smooth movement she deftly threw an uppercut to the Trolls protruding lower jaw. Her fist were cloaked in inky darkness as the impact took the Troll off his feet and arcing back. He lay sprawled out on the pavement as his crew looked on in amazement. They quickly scattered in all directions, all the fight taken out of them. She knew instantly what had transpired. The black diamond pendant was radiating warmth from the pocket of her jeans. She felt better knowing it was providing some protection for it's bearer. A nearby door swung open and a bell jingled. It was a shop keeper who witnessed the entire show. "I've seen some things in my life, but that darn near took the cake!", said the storekeeper. Don't worry about the Troll, he'll be transported real quick. No sooner than the words left the man's lips, the green skinned thug dematerialized. "He'll wake up in a holding cell somewhere in Brickstown...with one mean headache by the looks of it!!" Best be on your way ma'am, before the Trolls regroup.
What's your name, so I can spread the good word? Jen thought it might be best not to give her real name, so she quickly thought of a street name. "Vegas...Dark Vegas.", she added, thinking of the black diamond that gave her strength now.

Thao Ku was leaning on a lamp post smoking a cigarette and reading a Beijing Times. He glanced up over the paper as Jen came into view. "Ms. Preston...what's kept you?" Thao questioned lightly. She handed him the paper with the characters for his translation. "This is an ancient dialect Ms. Preston, I can make out most of it, but some are not familiar to me." said Thao lost in thought. "It talks of the lost people of Mu. They discovered a source of magic in rare black gemstones. Great sorcerers drew power from these stones and protected their people from hordes of demonic Oni with the dark energy that radiated from within. The Oni sought to possess all of the stones for themselves. To keep their people safe, the people of Mu gathered all of the diamonds they had and crushed them. The Circle of Thorns now have some of the surviving powder, now known as Sands of Mu. Not one black diamond exists. If one was to have survived it would be a powerful item indeed."

Jen thanked Mr. Ku for his help and quickly made her way back to Kings Row to meditate on the story she just heard. It was a huge responsibility. One that made her wary of every dark alley, and unlit parking lot. She would keep the pendant for now. Jen Preston was secure in the knowledge that the stone was looking out for her safety. Dark Vegas. She could get used that name.
