He stood watching the grate and waiting for movement. They had to be coming out this way and he was going to be ready for them. His visor was dusty, but he did not want to clean it lest his movement be detected by some wary watchman preparing to open the grate and let out a party of raiders.

They had taken his brother and when he had found him a year later the poor boy had become barely recognizable. The filthy creatures would never again hurt anyone during his watch, this he had sworn after leaving his brother in the capable, though impotent, hands of the local hospital.

He thought he heard a sound behind him, but did not turn. It was probably just his imagination anyway.

He heard another sound, but still he thought it was his imagination. At the distinct sound of the patter of feet he spun to face his adversary.

But there was nothing.

A blow to the back of his head brought him down, shafts of pain enveloping his body. He realized what a mistake he had made as he plunged into darkness, not knowing what would happen when light returned.

If light returned at all...
