Hi all!
Some friends and I are still leveling up and when we did the signature story arc I noticed that we had a choice of several rewards - hero merit, astral merit, empyrean merits...etc. So I'm wondering - should we wait until we're 50 and claim astral/empyrean merits, or go ahead and take the hero merits? What's the wisest course? Which are the harder to get? Which are the more useful?
Thanks all!!

You guys are fantastic, thank you for all the information as always!
I know, getting to that level in 8 weeks is crazyslow. We do, of course, have a zillion alts in the 20s (gotta love that prestige bonus from Praetoria for our newbie supergroup!) Most of our playtime is a duo between hubby and I - this trio is just the one I try not to "screw up" (especially since I'm the tanker!) But hey, at least I'm not scared to run TFs anymore, so there's that
Thanks for the "tips" about tips! I've done a few of those missions but originally it was just as a "oh, this will get me to the next level" thing. I didn't realize they had purpose. Yeah, we're newbs. Sigh. I'll be glad when I don't feel like a newbie anymore!
We got our first hero merit when we did the signature story arc the other day. Aaannd we went "eh, whuz this? Paragon wiki? Oh, high level stuff..."
Thanks again, we're off and running! Take care all!

Hi everybody, I'm back!
Well after some tweaking our team has settled into da/fire tank (me), ninja/therm MM (bro-in-law) and kinetic/ice controller (hubby). We're now all 35 and thanks to freedom, can get our epics!
The boys have pretty much decided but I'm a bit stuck. Would energy or pyre be best for 3 teaming and the occasional TF? (or something else)? There are our first characters so we're pretty broke, I just don't want to bring disgrace on the tanker cred!
Thanks for any advice!

Omg what a difference using our brains made. We're all MMO vets but apparently we temporarily forgot what we'd known for years.
I showed the boys how to target me to assist, and with me starting with the tough mobs targeted, we're suddenly rolling through waves of mobs and starting to feel heroic instead of like squished pancakes. Also they discovered their crowd control abilities, and I learned that I have to keep my taunt aura up. Life is now awesome and I dont have a frequent flier card at the med bay anymore.
Thanks again!. I know ive said it a lot but it's always sincere

So I officially owe everyone cookies! Thanks very much for the advice and encouragement.
Our group is certainly not in a rush - we prefer to play smart instead of zergrushing to a level cap and try to figure out what's next. Right now the biggest hurdle on missions is the two range classes learning how the /assist mechanic works in CoH, me trying to learn when to rescue a squishy and when he's okay, and all of us are figuring out whether to kill big red names or nice squishy blue names first. Oh and learning the mechanics of powers. Although some of the guides on the forums seem a little dated they're working for us
Thanks again for the encouragement (needed sometimes!) and excellent advice (woot I'm starting to understand slotting!). I think Arcanaville's defense guide is tonight's bedtime reading....last night's was an aggro mechanics guide!
Back to work so I can play on Justice tonight... -
Report on the first day of newbiekin groupage:
Ouch, big groups of red mobs in missions hurt when you don't know what you're doing yet! (We turned down the difficulty). Other than buying lots of rez scrolls it was fun :P -
Again my thanks! I'm happy to see that all the help you've been providing at least pointed me in the right direction. Apparently I can be taught!
I think I'm going to try out a dark/fire tanker to help both my radiation-in-law and the significant controller (their official names now, hehe). I like feeling that I'm truly contributing, not just in killing things, but in making the whole experience flow better. Also, this way if rad-in-law stops paying attention to buffs/heals and just wants to shoot things I can help on the self sufficiency bit
So, if anybody sees a lost-looking trio headed by a tiny lil dark flamin' bit of kickbutt, that's probably us -
Ah, people get involved, and it all gets interesting :P
Hubby's decided to go with Illusion/Kinetic Controller, but bro-in-law threw a wrench in things and said he wants to go Dual Pistols Corrupter. That's cool, will be fun, so we convinced him to go Pistols/Radiation.
Neither of them was really comfortable with an all-range group right out of the gate, so I volunteered to go Brute. I was thinking either Fire/Dark or Fire/Fire. Does that compliment those....at all?Help would be appreciated before I invest 3 hours in character creation tomorrow
Thanks all!

We don't have level 20s yet - we were super-smart at stopped at level 18
You peeps are amazing. It's nice to see that the interwebs haven't completely degenerated into what some...other...gaming forums have become.
I've decided to have my bro-in-law over to dinner tonight so we can have a good fun planning session. I see many alts in our future! (and possibly more questions!)
Thanks for being so awesome!! Wish I could cook for all y'all -
Since I've never played a game where having 3 of a kind was a good thing (except poker) that may be fun. But, as many of you have guessed, we do have different mindsets...
My hubby likes to stand back and control the flow of battle, whether that be through buffs, healing, or crowd control. He's the tactician.
The brother-in-law is more of a...let's just say, the non-tactical type. He likes to jump in and mix it up, whether that be in melee or ranged, he just likes to make things go boom.
As for myself, I'm in between and enjoy both! I do love to research, as gameboy figured out, but catching up on 6 years can be daunting. That's the type of deep end I enjoy jumping in, however -
Wow, thanks for all the awesome replies! It's nice to see a game where the 'holy trinity' of tank/heal/dps isn't always the way to go.
I'll have to talk with my team and look up some acronyms but with the amount of alts available y'all have given me some really great perspectives. Thanks for taking the time!

Hi all!
My hubby, brother-in-law, and I have started playing again after a 6 year hiatus (yeah, I know!) So although we have our old characters, we honestly don't know anything anymore, so we've decided to start playing with some new characters fresh out of the gate. We're planning to do 100% grouping with the 3 of us. What makeup would you suggest for a 3 person team to be self-sufficient?
Thanks!
