Well, to get serious about it - there are a zillion good reasons for Shinji not wanting to do it; one of which is is terrible relationship with his dad (He literally ONLY has him brought to NERV because he's useful - absolutely 0 emotional attatchment); also, the Eva's are... well 'interesting'; they mess with your head.

Its not as simple as say... driving a Gundam. (Which I would do in a heartbeat).

Plus of course there's the difference between a fantasy of piloting a giant robot - and really seriously going to war... in our minds we always win; but in a real situation? >.> Scared <explicative>less for a good majority of people.

Not to say he wasn't whiney in some ways <'x'. But I wanted to explain that there's definitely alot of things people overlook about him; that I think make him far more sympathetic than people are willing to admit.
