I have no interest in signing up for another account just to get another trial for a game that i've alredy explained isn't at it's best on my system. As I said to you AGAIN i don't dislike the game and that if i could get a better machine I would happily give it another try.
It is also impossible to connect to the non-eu site (i tried out of curiosity).
Next time read the bloody message don't be so rude to people. Yours is the attitude pal and the amount of abuse and crap i've had to put up with people after expressing my opinions in a reasoned and gracious messages is not representative of a community I want any part of. Grow up. I'm out.
And the attached tags only prove the point; how childish. -
Extraordinary! How rude!
First people DEMAND i pay for and download an american client because doing anything else is unreasonable.
Now you sit there and tell me I'm flat wrong for saying there are no players when I connect locally. It's not bad luck at all; the game has no players. I've already told you you are looking at it from the perspective of a high ranking player. That's no good to me. -
Quote:I don't need to try it. Games always lag on US hosts because my internet connection isn't strong enough. The UK doesn't have the same level of broadband quality as most other places, like america, and unless you have a really good ISP it will crap out. It does it every time. And for the umpteenth time, I'm not going to pay to find out. I've already explained the other reasons. If you cannot be bothered to show me basic courtesy then go troll elsewhere. So? Don't just ASSUME it'll lag badly. Try it.
Try to get a US trial account, and then, if it lags badly, well you've done all you can. I understand not wanting to play on low population servers, and if you really can't play on the NA servers well then that's too bad, but it still seems like you're not prepared to try. -
-
If this isn't irony, i don't know what is. You quote me saying 'don't get me wrong i don't dislike the game' and then proceed to tell me that you are the authority on what i mean. That's just ridiculous. Then you decide that, for perfectly valid reasons, i don't intend to subscribe right away, I'm a 'hater' and that i'm deliberately thumbing my nose up at the help (ie peopel screaming to play on the us servers endlessly). You need to grow up, seriously. It's not my fault the game is dead in the UK; i don't take any pleasure in that fact, but there is no point subscribing to a game when you are the only person on the map. There are 13 (last time of playing) people in the global chat room, but since they are all high ranking players they won't be anywhere near me and I can't even communicate with them. That's the restrictino of the trial account.
-
Do you just deliberately ignore what I write to cause an argument? Of course I haven't tried it; that would require paying for a new account and starting up a new character. FFS it's just offensive to ignore what people say like this.
-
Quote:and still you don't listen.Have you tried it yet to know that for a fact? Or are you just assuming that since it's a great distance it won't work?
I know people that play in Italy, Ecuador, and Australia, all on the North American servers, and their connections seem just fine from my vantage point. In fact, they seem to lag less than I do myself, and I'm smack in the middle of the US. -
Quote:No one has explained where I am wrong; they have said go and play on US servers. That's it. That's not a solution. I'm not interested in whether YOU were in a full team. It has no bearing on my experience whatsoever. I am telling you, as a matter of fact, there are no other players whenever I play. You can choose to either believe that or you can go and play in someone else's thread as there is no point you being here ignoring what I say just because it doesn't suit your view of the game. Your experience won't be relevant to mine for obvious reasons.Overly defensive? Or pointing out that you are completely wrong in your opinion (which you state as fact).
Again, I was in a full team, at 3pm today, a Monday. There are people playing on the EU servers. If you don't want to take the risk of buying a full sub and playing for the free month to find them, that's your choice. But it's down to you, not the game. -
Quote:You quote what I say but still ignore it. There are no solutions. The connection won't work over that distance. WHo do you think knows my internet connection and isp better: you or me?If you're not willing to try any of the suggestions here then you've conceded that you're essentially done with the game. So why are you still on the forums? I'm not intending that to be sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious... if you're not willing to go through the steps offered as possible solutions and you don't like it as is... then you obviously don't want to pursue it... so are you just here out of boredom? Or are you hoping someone gives you the push over the edge that makes you realize how good the game really is? There are plenty of people playing it to support that, if you choose not to see it then that's on you.

I'm playing the trial account and, as I said, will continue to do so until it expires. How is that not giving the game a fair shake? How am I being inflexible? The game will not work on US servers for reasons already given. I don't want to start another character. The only inflexible person here is the person who cannot tolerate the views of another.
-
Charming. I didn't say I didn't like the game. It seems that there are too many overly defensive people here who didn't bother to read what I wrote correctly. I made it clear that I would consider playign the game under the right circumstances. I didn't dismiss it all at all. My comments about the gameplayer are entirely valid and i expect peopel to respect them. I am not going to install the US client for reasons already explained. I don't care how easy it is. It WILL lag to the US because every connection that distant does. Whether or not someone in Bulgaria plays on the US servers is utterly irrelevant, they don't have the same internet connection as me. Besides the time difference will make it rather hard to do anything properly and I do not want to start another character. Respect that. If no one is playing the game over here then that's too bad. It's not my fault the game has died in the UK, and given there are NO other players in the game it clearly has. I'm not waiting till 9pm every night on the off chance a bunch of players around my level will appear. What is needed is a busy server, and that isn't the case. There is nothing that anyone can show or do about any of these things. Complain to the people that have given up playing the game, not to me.

It's not the character or the low level that's the problem. I like the characters i've created. It's the fact the powers are largely samey and not terribly complimentary. There really is not much synergy and it's a little shallow. I have a Dominator with thorn plant powers and they don't really gel and some of them are jhust the same thing: two abilities that trap the opponent are pretty much identical. Furthermore, beyond enhancements (which only really give a little boost to your abilities), there is nothing else. There's no talent point system or means to further customise your stuff. Don't get me wrong; it's not bad by any means, it's just not terribly deep. This may well be mitigated when you are playing in a group, but without players that's not an option. The areas are totally devoid of other players. There's not a single other player character on screen. Now that may be because they are all higher level and engaged in high level gameplay, but that's not really any better. I'm not reainstalling and starting all over again just to play on US servers. If no one in the UK/EU is playing on local servers then that's just too bad. If the game is more popular in the states then fine. But i'm not mucking around on the offchance it won't have lag problems (because it will).

Quote:it would also mean having to start the character again and without a trial account. It's no hassle at all. Download the exe I linked above; tell it to install to your current directory; it'll do a little twiddling, but you've already downloaded all of the necessary files, so all it needs to do is fix localisation.
Over 100,000 players from around the world play on either set of server farms. Players in the EU play on the NA servers. Players in NA play on the EU servers. Players in Australia play on both. Players in South America play on both. Players in Singapore play on both. When I say "around the world", I mean "around the world".
Hell, there has been multiple times when folks in the EU comment they get *BETTER* response from the NA servers than EU because of the internet structure (NA is much better connected than Germany, which is where the EU servers are located). -
There isn't much point: people would play the game if there were players. There just aren't any. I last looked and about 16 people were online. That's not going to work.
-
Ok, first off: thanks to all (well most) for the help. The good: the setting is excellent. The music and presentation are likewise excellent. The environment is engaging and I'm sure with a decent rig it looks even better. The bad: there's just no one playing this on the EU servers (I tried both). Obviously there are always going to be more in the US; that's just the way it is. But I won't be reinstalling a NA client, it's too much hassle and the connection will suck over that distance. In terms of gameplay I'm not yet convinced the powers offer enough depth to take a character through the game. The synergy of powers, the breadth of abilities and the ability to develop them, as you can in other games, doesn't seem to be present. That would be fine if there was more to it. The black market is done well as are the enhancement mechanisms - and I know you can craft them with recipes etc. But I don't see it as enough. I'm sure if a) there were more players and b) i had a really good pc those issues would probably be lessened. Grouping always makes a game more fun, all things considered. But for now, while the game is playable for me, I just can't see myself paying for it, and buying a new PC is out the question (I can't even find someone to buy my ps3, so it's just not going to happen). Really, though the game is more of a memory hog than it should be - my specs aside, it's not a new game by any means. If my trial character is kept on the server and if I can get a better set up then I would happily play for at least a month. But for now, while I ride out the rest of the trial (play at least to level 14), I don't see it happening. These games require a social element and when the game is just plain deserted there's really little point playing.

I live in the UK so that's why they are the Euro servers (i knew what region i was working with). Server just seems devoid of life. Not sure what I can do if I cant message or group with other people on the trial.
-
So far Defiant server seems empty. I've seen one other player.

Quote:Thanks. Also keep in mind the limitations of your equipment (glad to see you got it working). For a while I was playing this game on a laptop, and it worked fine but I had to use low gfx settings. I recently upgraded to a relatively cheap $600 machine that runs everything on the highest settings (with 2 program instances, even!) and it really made a difference. Sure the gameplay is the same, and its not like I can do anything I couldn't before, but the water, shadow, and depth of field effects just add a lot to the game environment. Can't wait to see what they add in the upcoming Ultra mode!
It's not for want of a better machine, believe me. -
I didn't say the game was crap. In fact I made it clear I have yet to form an opinion on the game.
Trial reminder windows or anythign like that aren't going to stop the sort of people who make a living trying to sell in game money in mmo's. I can deal with it, but it is a pointless inconvenience.
You can team with who you like; that's the beauty of these games. But I don't play using dial up speeds. If you dislike my pc then consider yourself lucky you have something better. Or better yet offer something more practical than reminding me how old my machine is. I know it's old, but it's the only one I have and the game will either prove unplayable or it won't.
Telling me my pc sucks gets noone anywhere. -
limitations are fine, reducing the number of days the trial lasts wouldn't bother me either. This screen is just a bad idea.
-
Quote:you can, except it resets every time you load a new area/screen.Yeah, the Rogue Isles are usually laggier than Paragon City (where you are when playing hero-side). City of Villains came out about 2 years after City of Heroes, and they did a little more detailing graphically.
Having never played the trial version I'm not familiar with the window in the middle of the screen, but if it's anything like the rest of the windows you should be able to drag it elsewhere on the screen, even if you can't close it altogether. -
Ok, thanks for the replies. It seems to be working now. Can't comment on game quality straight away, but the idea of having a permanent 'this is a trial' window in the centre of the screen is a bad idea. I'm aware my pc is old. I'm aware that i should upgrade it, but I would hope peopel respect that I don't have the knowledge or the money to do so, and I can't afford to buy a new machine either. It runs ok, for a trial at least, a little laggy around the Rogue Isles. I have the latest drivers from nvidia: 175.16_geforce_winxp_32bit_international_whql (that's the name of the exe from the website). if there are any better drivers I don't know where they are; it's like looking for a needle in a haystack and I would assume that nvidia make the best and most up to date ones. Thanks.

Quote:If i wasn't interested in other people's opinions, I wouldn't be here at all. But as I said, the greatest game in the world is no good if I can't play it.The game has been successfully running for 5 almost 6 years (in April). It is stable. I understand you are frustrated. But, as Radubadu stated installation issues are very infrequent. I'm sorry you are having difficulties. The fact that it is re-downloading files, along with you not seeing the UI initially, strongly indicates that the installation you have is messed up, a lot. I would recommend letting the updater run, download, and giving it the time it needs correct itself. After which, you should be able to see what the game truly offers. And if you like it and choose to pay for it, you will already have a full functional copy.
If you don't wish to do so because of your frustration, that is your choice. But since you posted into the player question section, I would assume you are, at least, willing to listen to our advice and possibly withhold judgment until you are able to experience the game as it was meant to be.

Quote:It may be the greatest game ever, but if i can't play it...Let me point out again... you're judging the gameplay on an installation issue. I realize it can be frustrating but it is not a reflection of what actually playing the game is like and since installation errors aren't common issues on the boards (at least from what I've seen) you might just be unlucky.
On the other hand if you want to walk away from an award winning game that is still one of the most original MMOs out there today because you lack the patience to get it installed after an error... well you weren't around long enough to be missed :P
