and you know... some people playing the game and others like it, might, you know, BE in advertising... They are not inherently evil. It is merely their job to promote a product or a type of service to people who they believe will want to use it.

yeah like me, i was in club promotions and guerilla marketing for seven years at a company i cofounded, and it totally sucked my soul away. i got into it for specific reasons that didnt pan out and after that i left amicably.
all im saying is this, i wanted to post on the feedback forums my dissatisfaction of the real life ads being added to COX as is my right as a customer. i am glad that there is an opting in or out option and i still stand by my point that advertising kills what makes us human. i still love COH and will continue to play at least semi regularly because of all the great stuff that has been added since my absence.

so i have been thinking about the ad business that is goin on and the debate. while i still say that advertising is bad for society in general; i was teleporting around in freedom and i noticed something, i hadn't noticed one billboard since i had come back to COH. not one, so i found one and imagined how orthopedic insoles would look on there. I like that the developers would get extra resources, but its totally unquantifiable for the customers that are paying a monthly fee. how are we supposed to know how our game improved with the extra money? how are we to know what that money is doing besides lining pockets of CFO's or something like that? now i totally accept that the ammount of money taken in by ads would not offset the sub prices but what about some other blatent or non subtle way the ads give back to the customers? things that really hinder our imagination when we dont have access to them. their absence regulates what kind of characters we can make and their concepts behind them: costume pieces
now with champions online coming, and from what i have read it seems they are trying to be as customizable as possible. meaning you can create any type of character you want, in terms of visual representation (not surprising cause its also made by Cryptic). now if the ads gave us access to all costume pieces, minus the lvl based one (capes, auras), that would be something. now i know what people will say, what about the veterans? "i waited and paid all that money and waited for a year so i could have wings..., and a kilt! well, if life were based on how much money we threw at each other our society would be in deep...oh wait, i just made myself sad. -
HI all, feel like im on craigslist looking for an apartment in sf, but here goes.
just came back after a stint of other mmos and other various games and i love what has changed in COX. I am looking for a decent sized SG that is, above all, fun and has a sense of humor. I am always willing to help lower level compadres and; though, i am not a very hard core player, i could easily become obsessed with this game again given that the right crew picks me up.
At the moment i am part of academia X and while they have a big base and coalition, no one is on while i am (generally play from ~11pm - 4, 5am pst), and it seems the rest of the coalition is brazilian and i dont speak portuguese. so you can see my problem.
anyone interested in a prospective memeber send me a tell or email in-game to Denego.

it sucks cause im not even that good a kisser. -
the car commercial is a slippery slope that i will not delve into (besides, watching commercials and actively paying for an mmo roughly $15/per month or $180 a year, and participating within it, is a little different [the key words here are passive and active]) its not a question of value its more of a "i pay to participate in a 'fantasy' world where i can somewhat pretend to do heroic things and fight bad guys, and knowing that Gatorade has a new energy drink wasnt really part of that.
it just feels like trickle down economics all over again. when reagan enacted corporate welfare, saying that the $$$ was goin "trickle" down to the employees and consumers. (I still wonder how people got suckered by this)
NCsoft is, as far as im concerned, a good company and not the type to liquidate employee pensions or rip off consumers, they really seem to listen the customers and they have 3 non subscription games, exsteel, DR and GW, each of which i have played and enjoyed, but i have desperately clung to COH cause, well... im a dork.
all im saying is advertising, as a medium and industry, is evil; as it breaks human beings down to our basic stereotypes, parts and emotions, exploits those very things that make us human and then tries to sell us crap that we dont need, that is cheaply made in a 3rd world country by a 12 year old. again, im not knocking ncsoft, just voicing my opinion in the forums about the ads (which is what they are for) and that i will be opting out.
sorry about the bad grammar and commas and parentheses. -
With inflation and production values of games goin up, subscription prices, of course are goin up, especially now our $ is virtually worthless at the moment (our penny and nickel are worth less than what it takes to make, imagine how many of each are in circulation right now). what im saying is that if subscription fees are goin up then i bet that the player base will shrink; and, if there is as many or more varieties of games (mmos) being played, that are subscription based, as there are now, i bet it will shrink even more so. will there be people to pay $15+ sub fee, sure there will be, but over time the number of people willing to do that will become smaller and smaller. the consumer is fickle, and when the consumer is having a hard time covering their mortgage (specifically, right now in north america), i doubt that a video game is the highest priority.
am i an economist, no. advertising just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and to quote one of the greatest comedians alive or dead, "if you are in advertising, kill yourself" - bill hicks
if there is no obvious and blatant benefit to opting in, then why would i? im not knocking content, everyone loves content but, why do i want to look at more ads when they are on every 2 minutes on tv, countless "normal" billboards blight the landscape of any available free space and the internet is basically all ads disguised as content. seriously, why would i want more images bored, oh so subtly, into my skull, i play this game as a way to get away from that stuff not to look at the varieties of gatorade
just my 2 cents -
Now dont get me wrong, and i know that this opinion has been voiced before; but, dropping the subscription price, even minimally by opting into the in-game advertising would attract more people i think than just giving all the money to develpment. i just returned to see what was up with the game and i love it. With the inventions and salvage and all the new costume pieces since 9+ months ago.
i don't know, i wouldn't have given the option of opting out and after a period of a few months when the revenue has stabilized, i would have dropped subscription fees by a small percentage, or based on amount of time played and scaled, but still less than 14.99 or whatever amount one payed. i think the number of people willing to try the game out would increase if the sub fee was somewhat or slightly less than the golden standard of $15/month for MMO's
