I am lucky enough to have a wife that plays CoH with me... I've been slowly corrupting her over the years with various nerdery... Star Wars, she loves D&D now and even played some Call of Cthulhu, etc. She loves action adventure sci-fi fantasy horror etc. as much as I do, if not more.
In fact, she even got a character to 50! I haven't even accomplished that yet!
Seriously... if you are a gamer like the rest of us (and if you're even reading this, count yourself in) try your best to meet a significant other who's also into it. It's a wonderful thing. If you're already involved, try to get him or her interested in as nice a way as possible, find ways to make what you do look as appealing as possible, without shoving down their throats
You might be pleasantly surprised.
(edit) in response to the original poster, my wife and I play together most of the time, we have a controller duo on Guardian, both (as of this posting) level 26. We share similar costumes, but different powersets, origins, and we chose un-related names. Let me just tell you, duo controllers ROCK. Her controller is Illusion/Kinetics and mine is Ice/Empathy. Makes a great combo.
