Quote:It's not the actual power levels that matter, though. It's about presentation. My Super Strength Tanker doesn't feel particularly Super Strong, but it's not because he does comparatively lower damage. It's because he's not doing things that strong characters can do, like lifting a car full of thugs and smashing it on a rock, or holding up a falling building or train track. Again, this is just one example, but it's not about the numbers, it's about the presentation.Wanting CoX to be more like a comic book, that there is the crux of the problem. You want the game to be something it's not, and then bring up perceived issues with the game because that's "not how they do it in the comic books." We have endurance because it's part of how most MMOs operate, because we need some type of limiter. Otherwise we would just wait for our powers to recharge and spam them indefinitely. Likewise, there's problem a good reason why we can't perfectly recreate comic book heroes.
They'd be overpowered. If you could make a character that has offense and defense of Superman, that would certainly not be balanced.
I realize I'm looking for the game to be something it isn't. It can't possibly meet all my desires, but there are places where it might be tweaked so it's closer to what I'd like. For my part, I think it would be good for the game in general to be more like a comic book. Not exactly like, just MORE like. -
Quote:What I mean is that the game just falls short of replicating what we see in the comic books.Ok I guess that I will be the first to say it, since I am confused by this comment.
How do you define a better "Comic Book Experience" ?
I am not trolling you here Ultimo, Just uncertain what you meant by this ?
Consider Batman, one of the most significant, iconic characters in comic book history. He's been copied many times over the years, generating characters like Moon Knight, Nightwing and so on. City of Heroes simply can't emulate him or his adventures.
Everything is about beating up bad guys, and not the type we see in the comics. Batman adventures tend to include some intrigue and mystery. CoH doesn't bring in any of this.
Actually, here's another great example, one that's actually in the game.
A building is on fire. How CoH deals with this is very different from what we'd see in a comic book.
In the comics, the hero will rush into the burning buildng, dodging burning rafters, sudden sinkholes and walls of flame to rescue the child trapped within. Outside, his teammates are trying to combat the actual fire, rescuing people from the upper story windows.
In City of Heroes, we beat up an army of bad guys, then we beat up the fire. Then we beat up more bad guys.
In the comics, we see car chases, death traps, secret IDs, and all sorts of other stuff that CoH is just missing or falling short of.
In the comics, Spidermand spends most of his time fighting Electro, not an army of nameless, faceless goons, only to find Electro is 40 times as powerful as Spidey is.
As I say, though, the game doesn't fail, it's pretty good, for what it does do. I'd just like to see them fill in some of the gaps. If DC Online has the kinds of things that make it a Comic Book MMO instead of an MMO with comic book flavouring, then CoH may be in trouble. -
Quote:I agree, up to a point. It does many things very well. If it didn't I wouldn't have been here as long as I have, and I wouldn't care to suggest what I see as improvements.I though so
For me it's the opposite. I couldn't really care what the source material is. I play Co* cos it's the best designed MMO I've ever come across (that's not to say there's no flaws, but that the core design principles are so far above EQ, WoW and their various ripoffs). -
Quote:Actually, this touches on one of my biggest complaints about the game. There's just not enough "comic book" in this comic book game. At this point I don't see how it can change in any significant way without a radical overhaul, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that. However, if I see a way the game might be tweaked to improve the comic book experience, I'll usually mention it. You never know what's possible until you try.I can't make a complete judgement of you, cos I've not seen many of your posts (I tend to stay out of the tanker forum), but this quote hints to me that your problem with the game is mainly that it's a MMO first and a superhero game second. I've noticed Ultimo_ seeming to have a similar attitude in the past (his inability to create a suitable Iron Man clone for example). Not that it's necessarily a bad attitude to have, but it's one that will lead to disappointment...

Quote:I was, and do. My comments are always general in nature. I only present numbers when certain people demand them because I know that specific example will become the fixation and the general principle will be lost.Well, in a way, you were. When suggesting a change for defenders, one has to look at defenders as a whole.
Quote:In the majority of in-game situations, defenders are one of the most powerful AT's around due to their force multiplying capabilities in teams.
Quote:Even from a solo standpoint, they're still capable of things other AT's couldn't dream of. It's only in a small number of cases that they struggle, and that's where the problem lay.
Quote:How do you make defenders better without changing their overpowering nature on teams? A number of people would like to see them solo better/faster (myself included), but I never would have given them more damage. The fix the devs made was brilliant in its simplicity, and one I don't recall ever seeing posted.
Quote:Why people react to you the way they do? Well, you've posted anecdotal evidence with VERY questionable numbers and results that no one else can come close to replicating. You're either lying, crazy, dumb, or have the only bugged game client out of a hundred other people. When it happens several times over different issues, people tend to remember. (as we've seen.)
As I said above, I generally don't post numbers because my comments are usually very general in nature, and because I don't pretend to have the expertise in the mechanics of the game I would need. I only present numbers when they are demanded of me. The usual result is that the example becomes the fixation of the thread and the general point I was making is lost. I suspect sometimes that is the reason people demand the numbers. -
Quote:I won't presume to speak for JB, but I wouldn't think of suggesting my threads were the motivating factor behind the changes made.Interestingly enough, most of the changes to Invuln were suggested LONG before JB was ever registered to these boards. His proposed change to tanks being "an offensive stance that lets them do the same damage as brutes with 50% fury with 10% more mitigation" never happened. Calling Invuln a neglected and ignored set because it wasn't Castle's "pet" (WP) that was inferior in every way didn't bring the buffs about. Just by saying "it sucks, fix it" doesn't mean he was the reason behind the fix. Likewise, your proposition for a raised Defender damage mod wasn't the catalyst behind the defender buffs.
Before GR was announced, JB would constantly say that switching sides would trivialize tanks since brutes could do more damage and had the same mitigation caps. The wide majority of posts to the contrary said they wouldn't because Brutes, for as neat as they are, still can't tank like tanks can. One person may have said that side switching would never happen, but that person was ignored and rightfully so. Most definitely not the multitudes he claims in his post. It was the work that people like Sarrate, Acemace, Starsman, Tundara, and such that showed where the holes in a lot of those sets were and with the numbers to back them up. Insulting anyone who liked tanks as they were with the phrase "aggro-monkey" didn't help.
My threads on Defenders were designed to identify what I saw as a failing in the class, that they had weak offense and weak defense, and needed a boost in one area or the other. I was informed I was wrong, and didn't know what I was talking about, and not politely. Seems I did know what I was talking about, since the Devs decided to give the class more offense.
I'd never suggest MY comments motivated the change. I'm just saying that if I was as off-base as some are making out, the changes they DID make wouldn't have happened. -
Quote:He daren't say, considering how suggestions and observations are received around here.I know you say you're looking forward to GR, but what are you thinking about that would make the game less boring?
More people online? New content? New power sets?
.
I'm also looking forward to GR, though I'm not sure what it will fix, even if it added ALL of those things. As I said at the beginning, endurance issues make the game a tedious grind of waiting for the endurnce to come back enough to fight, but it's far from the only issue.
We'll see what GR brings to the table. -
Say, JB, isn't it fascinating how we're apparently wrong even when we're right?
-
I'll also point out that the thread they linked to earlier mentioned increasing Defender damage, which they ALSO did (even though I was flamed vigorously for suggesting it).
Hmm. Maybe I do have some magic ability to influence the devs.
(or maybe I'm actually identifying problems that need worked on?) -
No, I hadn't played for a while, and the characters I'd used recently had the default colours anyway.
I hadn't checked to see if there were tailor sessions available, so there's probably no reason to file a bug.
Thanks -
Quote:You're correct, You've been respectful in the past and none of my defensive comments are meant for you or other respectful posters. I'm sorry you got caught in the crossfire. I have absolutely no problem with anyone disagreeing with me, I just ask that they do so without being disagreeable.Generalizing isn't always very nice either. I don't recall remotely attacking you. I simply disagree with your position. I've used every powerset in the game in one combination or another, and I've never really had the issues that you describe. Part of it may be what someone else mentioned about perceiving the need to have full bars when going into battle, I tend to have full bars when I enter a mission, after that it hardly ever happens. But, very very seldom am I ever just waiting to do something. You report a different experience, that's fair ... I don't understand it, but I'm also not behind your desk chair watching you.
Incidentally, at the very beginning of this thread you mentioned that this whole thing came about after having played other games you noticed that CoH was comparatively tedious because of current endurance mechanics. Do you mind me asking which MMORPGs that you tried out? I've played a number of them, and I've never come across a more power/spell friendly system. However, I do like new things and I certainly wouldn't mind trying the ones you were playing.
Again, I apologize if you feel you've been slighted in any way.
I spend most of my time in Lord of the Rings Online, Star Trek Online and DDO, though I've played other games (not WoW or Everquest, though). I've found that I don't have nearly the same issues in those games. Galaxies is another that suffers somewhat from this, but in that game I was playing a Crafter and didn't do much combat. -
Has anyone else noticed that their custom coloured powers have been reverted to the default colours?
Is it a bug I should report? Did they provide everyone with free tailor sessions to correct it?
Just wondering. -
The lesson I take from all this is that if anyone other than that particular little clique has the audacity to post anything like a suggestion, that they will circle the wagons and make (often very) personal attacks until the thread's purpose is lost under a pile of ****.

Quote:It's interesting. I could swear I was playing one of my Tankers, but if you say it was a Defender, I guess I had better capitulate to your better knowledge of what I'm doing.Perhaps it's time to stop posting these threads. You know, the ones where you select a game mechanic that is impeding your tankmage defender and then disingenuously claim that you want it changed "for the good of the community."
-
By all means, read the whole thread. You'll find I wasn't the one that started slinging insults. Just don't post about it here, it's off topic and an obvious attempt to find something that can be used to insult me further, since this thread isn't providing enough fodder.
-
Quote:The post you linked to is off topic, but I'll say this:
In essence, it was trying to tell me that what I actually saw happening with my own eyes didn't happen. That will always be an extraordiarily hard sell, no matter how much you all pat yourselves on the back for saying it.
It tried to tell me there had been no compaints that Defenders were weak solo (something which has been asserted in this thread by the same people that were telling me it isn't so).
It's actually an excellent example of why I don't post builds. It takes an example and focuses the attention of the thread entirely on that one example, thus diverting attention and discussion from the orignal point. Of course, the link doesn't show the whole thread, just one post taken out of context.
In any case, I'm not going to argue a nearly YEAR-old thread again. -
Quote:You still missed 5a, in which the problem isn't solved and the "helpful" forumites refuse to accept that there may be a problem that their suggestions don't help.In the smattering of players posting about endurance issues(not including you), the problems are nearly always resolved with a series of steps.
1.Helpful forumites ask for a build.
2.Player provides build.
3.Helpful forumites make build suggestions.
4.Player uses those suggestions.
5.Problem solved.
You, however, have continually ignored 4 and 5. To the point of landing on ignore lists.
Put another way, if it was just one or two builds, I could post them and it might be that the issue has to do with them. However, I'm not going to post hundreds of characters that are all having the same basic problem (though to differing extents), and I'm not going to go looking for builds from the many other people who have posted over the years complaining that endurance costs are excessive.
Again, the problem isn't with just a couple of builds or ATs, it's a general issue and I'm not the only nor the first person to comment on it. -
Quote:I've posted builds in the past when it's been requested, and the threads usually degenerate even further than this one did. They become little more than source material for the trolls to tell me how much I suck, and they're really beside the point since endurance issues have been reported and discussed by MANY other people. It's not about ME, no matter how much some people would like it to be.I think, Ultimo_, that you could deflect a lot of the aggro towards you if you posted a few of your builds for the generally benevolent forumites too look at.
You see, without having anyway to determine why you are running out of endurance perhaps we just can't wrap our heads around it.
And please don't post about how there should be more than one way to build a character, duh of course there is, this is CoH, probably the most flexible MMO around. There simply might be a few ways to improve your builds that everyone could constructively add to.
Without being able to see your actual problems we can only guess.
Thus, I've declined to post the builds. That, and I don't favour the idea of posting 200 characters... -
Quote:I'm not suggesting revamping the whole game. I'm just suggesting that endurance costs could use a bit of evening out across the board. I mean, it does depend on the specific power sets, but some ATs generally use more endurance to achieve the same ends as others do. Tankers and Defenders are examples, but it's more complicated than simply boosting endurance for everyone. Certainly, that would help everyone, but it wouldn't level the playing field at all.Er what? So did you want to have (for example) defenders use less endurance for their attacks, but use more for their buffs/debuffs?
For blasters, increase their damage to increase survivability?
Tanks to use less endurance for their attacks, and balance that out by making them less tough, or have less HP?
Scrappers.... Hell scrappers are perfect.
Controllers... use less end for their holds and such, but increase end usage for their buffs/debuffs?
Brutes, clearly need more end so that they can slot just damage in their attacks. That way, if they dont want to keep rushing around, they wont loose the whole bonus from fury. Balance by less hp and defence?
Stalkers... No idea here... More hp perhaps? Less end in their defences, attacks are fine?
MM's? Please refer to scrappers.
Doms, much more end, so they dont have to build for domination as much? Lessen the mag on their mez's?
Dont know, is that what you mean by balance?
If you're asking how I would redesign the game from the ground up, I'll gladly describe that, but it would be long, largely off topic and unlikely to happen in any case. -
I actually don't think simply universally increasing endurance would completely fix things, but it might help. There would still be a discrepancy between ATs, but people would not be running out as fast. This is why I suggested a "recalibration" instead of an increase. My thinking is that endurance use should be equalized somewhat and then raised universally.
Again, that's just my take on it.
Off topic, I still have all my Magic cards, but I haven't so much as looked at them in years. Ah, good times. I don't recall exactly when I got ot of it, it was before they changed all the icons, whenever that was. -
I suspect it may be that I can be rather stubborn. I'll cop to that. Even so, I always try to approach every new thread as a clean slate, and I treat everyone with respect and courtesy as much as I can. I am as mystified as you by the hostility, I can't see what the reason for it is.
In fact, as I go back through the last few threads I've started, I see the same sort of hostility, just as unwarranted, usually from the same few people. You'd think I ran over their dogs.
My goal isn't to make the game easier, just better balanced for everyone, more versatile, and hopefully more in keeping with the source material.
This thread, of course, is only meant to be on the topic of improving endurance issues. -
Quote:Welcome to my world. This happens in every thread I make, no matter what I'm posting about.I'm sorry, I think I should have politely asked you to take off the tin foil hat.
Seriously, you all have such a negative bias against this guy that you could "read between the lines" if he said water was wet. If you disagree with him, fine. But this paranoid behavior is laughable. -
Quote:I said there was a problem because defenders have less damage per endurance when that topic was brought up in discussion. I didn't bring it up.Excuse me? You claimed that there's a problem because defenders do less DPE than blasters.
That's a bit more than "Endurance costs are too high" by itself.
Seriously, if I don't respond to every utterance by every person in the thread, I'm accused of ignoring people, and if I do respond to everyone, I'm accused of saying things THEY brought up. -
So, I'm a liar because of things I didn't say?
You must live in a scary world where no one ever actually says what they mean. I said endurance costs are too high.
I didn't specify any AT, level range, or unusual circumstance.
Oddly enough, that's all I meant. Any subtext you are reading is your own creation. Don't berate me for your paranoia.
(This post is aimed at Dechs, sorry Coyote...)
