  1. Great! I wish I was more tech-savvy and apologize if my questions are a bit elementary. I appreciate your help, I will certainly use that link when I am ready to upgrade.

My game seems to be running wonderfully today (I've been running in safe mode for the last two days.) Alas, I have another silly inquiry- My character is on the Protector server- I've noticed that when I first click the server, it will either have red or green dots next to it. I wonder what that represents, and the effect it will have on how efficiently my game runs?

Sorry if this is a waste of a post, but I don't understand. Maybe my humor capacity will increase with the rest of my general game competence?

Sorry about that, it's just that rig is very underpowered for gaming. The Intel graphics is poor, you are stuck with 1GB (limited in BIOS, thanks of HP) of shared memory and a single core Atom is pretty low end on the CPU side of things. At least the hard drive is 7200RPM.

Turn on "Advance Graphics Settings" and turn them all down to their lowest settings or off. I still think the basic game shader isn't at it's minimum (not sure how much that would help).

The game also chews up a lot of memory while playing so I would suggest that you kill any "helper" apps you may have loaded. Ad-aware for instance is a pig. 1GB isn't a lot with shared memory for the graphics. Outdoors will be worse than in mission. You still will be paging the game on and off the disk as you roam around outside as the game itself can easily use 1 to 1.5 GB of memory while playing. CoV areas are a lot more complex than most of the CoH side so it tends to be very laggy traveling around outdoors.

You can also try and defrag the game directory with a utility like Piriform's Defraggler or Auslogics Disk Defrag. Both give you an option to defrag just a folder so it won't take all day. The game gets awful fragmented after a patch and every little bit of time saved counts.

Sorry. So exit as many things as you can before starting the game to conserve system memory, go into the Advance Graphics Settings and and make sure everything is turned all the way down and defrag the game folder.
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I appreciate it, I plan on looking into the defrag software now. In reference to your other comments, I've read online that the HP Mini's RAM can be upgraded to 2 GB so hopefully that will improve my situation! Unfortunately, this is the only formidable computer I have available to me at the moment, so it will have to do.

My graphics settings are already at the bare minimum- After reading the sticky posts in this section I ran my game in safe mode, and it yielded the same results.

You are 100% correct about the game lagging only in open areas and not in missions, though only in reference to higher level areas. When I play in areas that are under the jurisdiction of levels 12 and under, I experience almost no lag at all. When I try to venture to any higher level areas, though, the lag begins. I mainly posted this topic to figure out why that is.

Your suggestion that the computer I am currently using is the essential problem is probably correct, but I would just like to know why lower level areas on the same computer are so much more responsive.

I appreciate your time and thank you for your assistance.
  4. Everyone seems very supportive here. I really appreciate it, I've been a victim of forum snobbery in the past so this is a nice relief.

  6. I just recently upgraded my free trial. I am playing a level 16 villain on the Protector server. My game runs smoothly in all areas meant for players up to level 14, but when I try to take the Ferry to higher level areas my game begins to lag pretty badly. I am running windows 7 on an hp mini with 1 gig of ram. I can't think of any other information to include, so here is my CoH helper log:

  7. Thanks for your responses everyone. Sorry about posting in the wrong area, I guess I should have looked around more carefully before posting. I will repost in the correct area along with my computer specs now.

In response to the last question, I'm playing a villain on the Protector server.
  8. Hi,

I just recently upgraded my trial account to a full version so I might be a bit shaky and n00bish on my explanatory skills, but try to bear with me.

My character is at level 16- Up until about this point, my game has run very nicely, but now that I'm able to access higher level areas via the Ferry (necessary in order to level up further and such) my game likes to lag a lot and be generally irritating once I enter any new areas.

I'm just curious as to why it would only lag in new areas and run fine in lower level spots. I have my graphics settings at the minimum as is, and I'm at a loss. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else I might do to eliminate this problem and/or an explanation as to why it's happening in the first place I would appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for your time, I look forward to any and all input.
