  1. So I'm working on a project. Basically what I'm doing is taking the cut scene from the ITF, expanding it out a fair amount, and then putting voices and sound effects to it. I've added a scene in the beginning where a Scout comes and reports to Romulus about Imperious and the champions attacking. Romulus orders their forces prepared, and then asks the surviving 5th column commander if he will aide him to which the commander says he will. Romulus then goes before the Nictus to answer for his failure and the Cut scene proceeds as it does in game.

So, why am I posting this? Simple. I am in need of people to play the voices of the respective toons in the video. I already have someone doing the voice of Romulus so that is not needed. What I need are voices for:

    A Cimeroran Scout
    A Cimeroran Praefectus
A 5th Column Commander (Would be Outstanding if this guy could actually have a German Accent!)

These are all male roles by the way.

I also need a voice for the Nictus, but I want to experiment some with this. Right now I'm thinking of doing 2 voices for the Nictus but have them overlaid. Perhaps 1 man and 1 woman doing the voices. I haven't really decided yet. Though if anyone has a suggestion for what to do with the voice for the Nictus by all means toss it on the table.

    So, here is the dialogue:

    General Coruncanius:
    My Lord, a runner approaches.

    Romulus Augustus:

    What have you to report?

    Legionaire:

My Lord, the champions of Imperius have broken through the gates and even now best our forces. They wield powers unlike any I have known. And my lord, Imperius himself accompanies them.

    Romulus Augustus:

And what of Requiem. Any sign of him?

    Legionnaire:

No my lord. He has vanished without a trace.

    Romulus Augusts:

Very well. Prepare our forces. If we shall face our end, we shall face it on our feet.

Romulus Augustus (To 5h Column Commander):

And what of you? Will you stand by me during this hour?

    5th Column Commander:

I was ordered to provide you military assistance and support. I shall not abandon those orders, my lord

    General Coruncanius:

I shall go to aide in our defense, my lord.

    Romulus Augusts:

And I shall shall atone for my failures with our masters.

    Romulus Augustus (to Nictus):

    Master,

    I have failed you.

The champions wield the power of the gods.

    Nictus:

    Perhaps they do, Romulus.

But I will make you stronger than even the gods themselves
    .

    Romulus Augustus:

    How is that possible?

    Nictus:

    --I will show you!

    Romulus Augustus:

    By the dark gods...

    I am... NICTUS!

The champions shall be a feast laid before me
    !

Once again, I need people to voice the General Coruncanius, the 5th Column commander, the runner and the Nictus though the Nictus I will be expiramenting with to find something I like. I kind of want to find some combination of effects that make it seem like the Nictus is speaking both audibly and mentally, like it's vibrating the air to produce the sound waves but at the same time is speaking telepathically.

So if you are interested drop me a line or reply here and tell me which part you want to read for. I'll send you a break down of how I think the line should be read via email. You can record your line and send it to me as an MP3 or WAV format file.
  2. Well a bit of a self plug here but what the hell. I got sick of seeing States go at it with a BCU as well. Little bit a crash course in using pigg viewer, some experimentation and I made this for my loading screen:

So, considering the max level is so low, what's the end game content like and how long will it keep you busy for? As it's one area almost every past MMORPG I have played has let me down in.
I'm rather confused by this statement. Now granted I'm not an MMO-veteran or anything. I tried WoW for about 6 weeks, didn't like it. I personally hated Diablo 2 and have had more then a few people look at me like I've extra heads growing out of places that they don't have. But I used to run the software department at a Computer store of which games were a part of and one of the biggest complaints I heard from people was along the lines of the companies just kept adding levels. I remember one customer I spoke with described an MMO he had previous played as: You grind for 60 levels to get access to the raid that drops the stuff you need to craft your rare enchanted sword. Then you spend 6 months doing the same raid over and over again to get the stuff you need in order to craft it and then you spend another 3 months doing another raid over and over again to get access to the spells to enchant it so that after a year of working on one thing, you've gotten your enchanted rare sword at max level just in time for the company to stack another 15 levels onto of everything you just did so you're no longer max level.

CoH had 50 levels the day it launched. It was designed from day 1 to have 50 levels. Level 50 was always intended to be the top level in the game.

Now with the introduction of the incarnate they are getting into "God level" material for lack of a better phrase but then again, only 1/2 of the incarnate system has been released.

For me, the End Game content is about playing with my friends. I have multiple 50s. I don't play them that much right now. Why? I'm working on stories for my level 35 scrapper, level 37 troller, and level 37 brute. I work on those stories by running missions with my friends and RPing the characters. That's my end Game Content. And for me, that'll keep me coming back for a long long time.
  4. Hey, is there any point where the time frame of the cimeroran arc is establish? Like I mean how many years prior to "modern time" they were?
  5. Okay, I had to kind of go back and re-figure my production process a little and isolate where the technical problems were coming. Who knew Microsoft had a 512 megabyte files size limit? Anyway, I've fixed the contrast issues and changed the text to be more readable. The Corrected version of City of Heroes: A Legacy of Sin Book 1: Deception Volume 1 is up for your viewing now. The final size comes to about 16 megs so I recommend downloading the file and opening it off your hard drive.

As before, I encourage comments, and critique. Thank you and I hope you enjoy City of Heroes: A Legacy of Sin Book 1: Deception, Volume 1.

  9. So I'm doing a Statesman wallpaper, and I'm kinda at an impass. I've got 3 designs but I can't really put my finger on which one works the best. So I figured I'd toss 'em up and see what people said:

I've used AE quit a bit. I've got a 26 mission storyline sitting in limbo right now until I can buy the extra publishing slots.

But after that initial response, I have to say it was the best character write-off I'd seen in-game so far :P

I've never gotten rid of an RP toon (then again, I've only been into RPing for a short while). I suppose if I were to do it, I would make it count. Find some task force, preferably a fairly epic one (my favorite is Lady Grey), run it with your RP group, and let them know that your character is going to die on the final mission. If I were in your group, I think it would be damn awesome to watch (for example) a blaster run in to the fray in order to save his kinsman, blow his Nova attack, and then go down fighting.

Then again, that takes a decent amount of planning and timing. "Going into retirement" as Cende suggested, is also perfectly legitimate and probably easier.
    hmm now there's a thought.
  13. Tinkering around with some images and I came up with this:

Wanted to get some feed back on it. I'm toying with doing a Statesman, and Emperor Cole wall paper in similar styles. Also have an idea for a trio-piece with the three of them.
  14. So I've got a couple characters in a SG. Had them there for a while. Had my fun with them but honestly I've come to the end of their respective story arcs and I'm very seriously looking at killing them off. So here's my question should I just delete them and tell everyone in the group they're dead, or should I tell everyone in the group that the character is dead but keep the toon for gaming (They're all 33+)? What would/have you done in this sort of situation?

    Wallpapers

Greetings all. In the past I've undertaken some extremely ambitious creative projects. While the needed skills in undertaking those particular projects have been relatively minimal I've run into little snags here and there, particularly with time management and going overboard in some form. Past examples of this particular incidents include spending 2 days designing a Crab spider HUD for what will probably amount to 2 frames in an upcoming comic and trying to do a full cell shade style for an entire comic series. In short, I have a tendency to either take on more then I can handle or, as my father says, go around my elbow to get my thumb. Well, I've decided to try to enhance my skills, both in a creative capacities and with regard to time management. So, here is what I'm going to do.

In the past I made an open offer to anyone, who wanted to take me up on it, for me to make a wall paper for their toon(s). I am re-opening that opening that offer with the following addendum:

I will accept up to 3 requests at a time, with each request to be expected to be completed and put up for download with in 30 days of the request being made.

So, if you request that I make a Wall-paper of your toon on the 11th of August, I would have until the September 9th to complete your wall-paper and notify you of it's completion.

I would accept up to 2 more requests in that same time span and would have to decline additional requests until I have completed one or more of my currently standing requests.

Here are exampled of my prior Wall Papers.

So, if you are interested in submitting your toon(s) to my tender expiramentive care here is what I will need:

    • A demo file of your intended character. (I will provide instructions on how to acquire this)
    • the characters name
    • Some background on your character. I don't need a full bio like 1-2 paragraphs. Just enough to give me a taste of your character.
I will do 1 wall-paper per request, not necessarily 1 toon per request. so if you have 2 toons who are mortal enemies, different version of the same toon, Characters that would normally work as a team, or anything like that, that would count as 1 request. if you have any questions or would clarification on something, please post them here or PM me. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I will post the data that I accept someone's request in this thread.

To get a demo file of your character:

    1. Log onto the character you need the demo for.
    2. When you are in-game, press [ENTER] and type the following "/demorecord [character_name]" substituting your characters name for [character_name]. if the character has multiple words in their name, you need to include the underscore.
For example: I go to make a demo record of my Brute "Torroes Prime" My command will be /demorecord Torroes_prime.
    3. Count to 10.
    4. press [ENTER] again and type the following command "/demostop"
    5. Log out of the game.
    6. go into your file explorer and go to C:/program files/City of Heroes/ (If you installed CoH in a different directory, substitute as needed)
    7. Go to the folder labeled "Client_demos"
    8. Look for a cohdemo file in the Client_demos folder that is named as your character. In my example it would be Torroes_prime.cohdemo
    9. Right click on the file and open it with Notepad.
    10. do a search (CTRL+F) for "PLAYER" This will tell you the entry for your toon.
    11. The Code I need is 29 lines long, and start with "NEW" and your characters name. The last line of it will have a "PARTSNAME" command in it. Select all 29 lines of code and copy it.
    12. Paste that code in a PM to me or post it here in this thread.
    13. Here is an example of the code for my brute Torroes Prime:

The numbers will probably be different for your toon. It won't matter. Just copy and past everything from the line containing "NEW" for to the last line with "PARTSNAME" in it. It should be 29 lines in total.
    14. If you encounter some difficulty with this, or simply don't feel up to rooting around in your hard drive to find the file, contact me via PM and we'll set up a time and place we can meet online and I can grab the demo file of your intended toon myself.

Overall; Why is everything red? Also, why reinvent the wheel? I would imagine that a modified in-game HUD would work fine for conveying this type of thing.
    The red: Couple of reasons.
    1) A red filter provides a fair amount of contrast while still maintaining a minimal flair factor. Ever see in Action movies where the hero/villain is wearing those yellow glasses? The idea is that it maximizes lighting contrasts and makes tracking targets easier. The draw back with a yellow filter is the flash effect, it's pretty miner with small arms like 9mm but with larger weapons the muzzle flash can act almost like a mini-flash on a yellow filter. Red filter provide nearly the same level of contrast with substantially less flash.

    2) It's a psychological effect. Red generally promotes feelings of aggression and can make a person meaner. I figure Arachnos likes it's operative mean and aggressive. There are also theories out there that seeing the world through a red filter, a color we don't normally see through, it serves as a means of separating us from what we're seeing mentally. I don't personally believe it's true, but visually it is very different from a normal perspective.

    3) It's Arachnos. They seem to enjoy the Red/Black contrast.

As for why I'm not using the in-game hud:
Because it is the in-game HUD. It's serves it's function for the game, but it leaves a lot to be desired as a combat HUD. Look at Sci-fi Movies like Predator. Why did they make the Predator see in the infa-red spectrum? The Terminator, why did they build up the whole targeting and analysis system? Simple, to differentiate those respective characters from other characters.

You know what would be a cool moment in the story is if a battle gets out of hand and devolves into a crazy firefight where everyone is screaming at once... and each time someone says something their icon pops on, but in their panic everyone is screaming at once and multiple icons are popping up, much like a runaway pop-up ad online. Throw in a bunch of word balloons with fragments of speech and you'd have a nice visual representation of the chaos of battle.

Like that scene from Aliens when the aliens attack the marines and everyone is shouting at once. Doing that in a comic would be cool.
As impressive as that would be, Only like 2 frames of the entire comic are going to be from inside the Crab Spiders helmet, and one of those will be jacked up from damage before the helmet is taken off and discarded.

  • two months ago I released the Promo Issue for my fan-comic series, A Legacy of Sin. Now I bring you issue 1 of the series itself:

City of Heroes: A Legacy of Sin
    Book 1: Deception, Volume 1

The Final size of the issue weighs in at about 20 megs, so for those of us with slower connections it is recommended you download the file and it open it off your hard drive rather then try to read it online.

I would also like to point out that this issue is being released alongside a newly updated series bible, for those that are interested in the back ground of the series and well as some not-yet revealed in the series information about the characters.

As Always, comment, critique, feed back and questions are welcome and encouraged.
  • Well I took Ironik's thoughts about useful informtion and kinda reworked the displays. Now what were numbers are visual gauges with what I'm calling a "Seeing is good" approach.

Basically the idea is if you're in the middle of a fight, you're going to be focused forward on your target and you don't what that vision obscured, so your focus would be one the middle 1/3 of the screen, but you can still see the gauges by your peripheral vision. I oriented the gauges so that as numbers that should be high (Armor integrity, ammo reserves and the like) are depleted the gauge will go down and thus recede from your immediate field of focus and like wise the numbers there you don't want rising (IE Internal temperature, reactor pressure ect) if they rise the bar will like wise pull up and out of your immediate field of focus. Hence, "Seeing is good" If you can see the gauge with out looking at it, the material that gauge is measuring is in good standing. Once again, I've got the higher res version linked through the lower res version.

I wasn't really sure how to handle the comm channels so I kinda just threw it on there.

Yeah I noticed that everytime I scrolled by it and I kept saying "Oh I need to fix that after I finish this." yeah... never happened. Oh well. I'm not trying to design a fully functional UI, just establish an understanding of it's theoretical function.

Like I build Warhammer models, and I've found that having a basic understanding of how the weapon works helps immensely in changing the way it looks. Like I built a marine equipped with a heavy flamer a while back. I built fuel pods on to the back, and the nozzles to the for-arm with tubing running to mechanisms on the back pack that way it looked like the fuel was pumped from the tank, pressurized in the mechanisms and then forced out through the nozzles.

Same approach here. I want to show the view from the Crab spider's POV. I'm not building a system to use it, but it's good to have an understanding.

Well the sick part is that, at least for the issue I'm currently working on, I only need the HUD display for 2 maybe 3 frames and even then I won't need the full panoramic view in any of those frames. Still, I've found it useful to under how something works in this sort of project.
