Looks like we may have to expand to 2 teams when more people get in on this, which should make things interesting.

    ...

    Dammit.

*hands another licencing fee to Major T.
  2. I'm psyched.

Saw a leaked convention version where you could hardly see what was happening and this morning saw the official version.

    I like how they've re-interpreted the lightcycles.

Don't know much about the teamsters but I have known Stale since I started playing back in '05. teamed with him and his wife couple hundred times over the years and can say they are GREAT people to know and call friend.

His events tend to be loads of fun, no matter if it's just a random TF or his Herolympics ( always fun ).

    [/ QUOTE ]

What a very nice thing to say.

That made my morning today, right before I go on vacation too.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
Don't all four Shard TFs take 8 people to start?

So...if one person drops out...the rest will be unable to complete the Marathon.

    [/ QUOTE ]

They all need 8 to start, but not to complete (I think only quaterfield requires a minimum 4 people because of a simultaneous clcik job) - AVs notwithstanding.

Fillers can always be found. I can have 2 ready myself, if so required.

    [ QUOTE ]
Also, the reason I can't use TS isn't on the server's end, it's on our end. Skype uses 36k max, TS uses around a meg. In other words: I can't use TS because Charlie won't let me.

I'll be happy to be in global channels though.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think those numbers are off.

TS, 2 people using SPEEX 19.5 would see their clients use up 39 Kbit/s (link) downside, whereas Skype will vary between 30-70 Kbit/s (link).

Also, Skype is limited in the number of people who can use the channel at any one time. I,ve never been able to max out a TS channel.

The former's features allow multiple people to talk simultaneously, so that may be where lag spikes are occuring. Push to talk FTW.

IMHO, choice of communication software is like colas - they all do the job, it's just a question of what you like in the end.

But all right, we'll have to scratch making TS mandatory since it's an issue.

I was really hoping we could use the Teamspeak server (did I mention it's a kickazz server intended to have Teamspeak running on it? link for stats) to help people stay awake, communicate team strategy, have cheerleaders/supporters pop in if they wanted to, etc.

It would have been much simpler for me, as ref, to be able to log into TS and look around to see who was still coherent as well, but we'll have to make do with a global channel instead.

Will be interesting how long it takes...you should keep a record.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I intend to use this thread as a kind of blog while the team goes thru this.
  6. I was looking around and found some tips at organizedwisdom.com on staying awake:

    [ QUOTE ]
    Fast Facts:
    - Eat a light lunch; large meals tend to have a sedative effect.
    - Coffee, soft drinks, or commercial energy drinks provide caffeine that can help you stay awake and focused.
    - Taking a short nap can help improve alertness for the rest of the day.
    - Healthy snacks provide natural energy that will last longer than the sugar rush of candy.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'll be going through this later to see what could work for me, but the "avoid caffeine" idea is already out the window. I needs my Coca Cola.

    Other ideas:

    - Keep the room cold
    - Eat pungent foodstuff
    - Avoid bed, hot showers, horizontal position and “easy listening” music.
    - Wash your face and brush your teeth once an hour
    - Change your clothes. Underwears as well
    - Take walks every couple hours in the cool night air
  7. [ QUOTE ]
part of me wonders the estimated total time to completion.. in my mind i think at least 24 hours... if i try to think any longer then that my brain explodes

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm trying to focus more on all the shortcuts one could take.
  8. Teamsters are relatively new and yet have a great rep on this server already. They're definitely a good pick.

The Phantoms of War / Paragon Punishers SGs (now fused for double the awesome since earlier this year) have been around since year one, and teaming occurs nightly with scheduled events occurring on Friday evenings (TFs) while the rest of the time is "pick up and go".

Players are available at all times since there are multiple time zones covered.

  10. It will be so much easier with pals around, TS and global channels - and now with cheerleaders too!

The last time I stayed up past sleeptime in such a way was in 1999, and that was ... (removes socks to count past 10) ... 56 hours. Had a hospital's Novell server upgrade go wrong almost at every turn.

Before that, last time I did anything like that on purpose, was 144+ hours (over 6 days) when I was a teenager. Way back when MTV still showed music videos.

Useless Stalemate Trivia: his first date with his wife-to-be lasted about 48 hours, and he had worked a full night shift before that (after sleeping 4 hours).

    I'll sleep when I'm dead.

    Prize Package

    [/ QUOTE ]

Just to prove I can be more insane than Stalemate, I was only wanting to do this for fun.

So, if I participate (I plan to, but work is starting to get weird), I respectfully refuse rewards other than what the missions would give. So my teammates would be that much richer.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You, sir, are a prince amongst virtual heroes.

Even if there is something definitely wrong with you if you can see the "fun" in this. Then again, since I know what you do for a living and what you deal with on a daily basis...

I'll modify the above post accordingly, since this bumps up the single team prizes significantly.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
Instead, I'll cheer y'all on from the sidelines

    [/ QUOTE ]

You know, that's not a bad idea.

How about I create another category of players: "Cheerleaders", who could act as moral / ingame support?

They could pop in on the global channel or TS server to cheer us on, donate snacks (inspirations), etc.
  13. Prize Package

I just now saw the confirmation that the New Player Welcoming Night committee was going to contribute 150M influence to this event. This is especially generous since it falls outside their usual demographic. Big Thanks!

Add that to the 650M influence I'm dropping in, and we now have 800M to distribute to the marathoners.

    Awarding:

If only a single team runs (which is what this looks like so far), then I propose the following to distribute this prize package: Influence to be split up between all members, with an extra share to be given to the team's MVP (as voted on by rest of team)
    - Approx. minimum gain of 100M.

If 2 teams run, then the inf would be split between the winners / losers as 85% / 15% going to those still conscious at the end.
    - Approx. minimum gain of 15M (if on runner up team).

If anyone else would like to contribute funds to this (dare I say) historical Protector event, please contact me or post here.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
Stale, don't forget to swap Unholy to "participating", please.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Done.

And if you need help convincing TsukiSumarasu, just mention that this would be the ideal setting to justify the repeated consumption of poutine.
  15. [ QUOTE ]
*sigh* I'm having a HUGE yard sale that weekend, so not sure I'll be able to run an all-nighter. However, I will be around to help, harass and anything else I might be needed for.

    [/ QUOTE ]

All righty - switched over to "interested" group.

*hands over usual percentage to Major T for use of term
  16. Teamspeak will be the official means of voice communication, sorry.

It will also be used to check up on the participants' whereabouts.

    At random intervals.

    As sneakyishly as possible.

I can set up channels on a TS server (Thx again, Beheading Force) specifically for this, and even if you don't have a mic you can install the client and hear what's happening.

If my memory serves me, this thing is hooked up to a T1 line, so any lag issues you may have had before (probably linked to poor bandwidth from the "server" at the other end) should be resolved.

On that server particular server, with IE running, TS and CoH, I've never had problems at all.

It's the same server Sooner, Major T, Ice 9 and others use regularly. Perhaps they can also offer their impressions.
  17. I fixed up that note Kyo:

    [ QUOTE ]
Note 3: This will NOT be easy to complete if you are using a character unsuited to defeat AVs as part of a team. Team dynamics will play an important role and.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Thx for pointing that out.
  18. [ QUOTE ]

  19. Guidelines are added to original post now.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
yeah i think i want to see the full rules and conditions for this... as it sound interesting... defiantly a unique idea.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's the politically correct way of saying "demented", isn't it?

As for unique, I wish it was... when I had the idea 2 years ago it was so. I thought it would get done with the Super Olympics since we had postponed it, but that project isn't getting off the ground and since I proposed the ieda, other servers have ran variations of it.

But yeah - this will definitely put the "hard" in "hardcore".

...Put me down as an alternate in case somebody becomes impaired from seeing too many eyeballs.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'll add you to the "Considering" section for now, since players starting the first TF should be the same as the ones finishing the last one.
  23. [ QUOTE ]
ok just want to understand exactly what your trying to do... starting at 9pm go thru all the shadow shard tf without ceasing....

No breaks.... ohh vey.... this would be like 24-48 hours of not sleep....

i dont think i have the stamina... but i will consider it.... doc i think has only done like 2 of the shadow shard tfs...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Just to be clear, and a preview to the "rules":

    There will be breaks allowed.

The prizes will be awarded for a team completing the marathon, not being the fastest. A points system is in the works to determine a winning team.

Any trick to speed things along will be allowed / encouraged.

Prizes (to be confirmed) are likely to be in the 50M range per player on the winning team, 5M for those on the runner up team. If only 1 team runs, there may be slight changes to this prize (like a bonus awarded by peers, secret vote).
