  1. "This is Lorraine Chan, reporting for KSCN, Channel 8 News, Steel Canyon. What we see here is an assemblage... of heroes... make that heroINES... that so far has been unprecedented. We see our super-powered community rally for threats such as Luska or the Clockwork Paladin... but it's usually a free for all. These ladies look like they mean business.

We suspect that it is related to the fighting that has broken out everywhere between Crey Industries and a heretofore-unknown paramilitary group called Legion. This is the same organization that, under the guise of 'protection', shelled Eastgate to rubble earlier this morning. Inquiries have already been filed with federal officials as to the nature of this organization, but details are not forthcoming at this time.

In any event, THIS organization has also appeared, seemingly from nowhere."

"Lorraine, they seem to all be wearing similar uniforms."

"Yes, Chester. The predominant style is tall or stiletto heels and decidedly bold costume choices. Wait... they're all now wearing the same colors. Red and black, with a lightning symbol. This appears to be a shadow organization of some kind, one we've not heard of before."

"Well, they all look like folks you'd rather have at your back than against you, that's certain."

"Yes. They do. We'll continue coverage of this developing story as it happens. Lorrain Chan, Channel 8 news, back to you in the studio, Chester."
  2. As skirmishes broke out in Blyde Square between Legion troops and Crey Paragon Protectors and Revenants, Positron turned to his partner Valkyrie.

"I don't get it. They're STILL all grey to me. Whata I gotta do, exemplar down to get in on all this XP?"

Valkyrie shrugged. "I guess. You still up for bowling on Saturday?"
  3. Kashaye heard .. noises... from far away, odd beeping sounds, interspersed with bell-like tones. She felt... different. More in tune with her surroundings. She expanded her awareness and got a sense of where she was. Hospital. She opened her eyes. The blinding white glare of flourescent lamps caused her to wince momentarily... but she felt fine.

She swung her legs off the recovery bed, found her outfit and her equipment, and got dressed. Then she picked up her commlink. "Gwen, you copy?"

    -----------------------------

    [ QUOTE ]
"Let's head to the largest concentration of Crey forces and shut them down!" She unsheathed her claws in one swift motion and looked around to see who was with her.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Lady Gwen nodded grimly. "Ms. Feynman... Clarisa... I see you're more than I expected. All the better." She strung her bow, and looked at Makavell. "Stick by my side, kid. This is where you get to test that suit of yours." At that point her commlink buzzed, and she heard three words that sent hope soaring again.

    "Gwen, you copy?"

    "SHAY! What happened to you?"

"I don't know. Last thing I remember was in the lab, after it got trashed. Remind me to kick Martel in the crotch for what his men did."

"Get in line, sister, get in line. You feeling better?"

"Yeah. I think so. I feel different... but it's not bad different. Good different. I think. Where are you?"

"We're about to launch an attack on Crey. Your boss is.. wow... let's just say I'm looking forward to fighting with her."

"Clarisa?? Wait... she's a heroine too??"

"You better believe it. Get over here, we got a score to settle."

"Hang on one sec. Switching channels... if we're up against Crey, we might need some backup."
    --------------------------------------------------

Kashaye switched channels as she ran full tilt out of the hospital entrance. "Soul Train to any and all S.H.E. members, this is a priority alert. I repeat, a priority alert. I need assistance in Steel Canyon, ASAP!!"

Several replies were heard, and in ones, twos, and ultimately tens, groups of spike-booted heroines converged on Steel Canyon. They were of varied archetypes and security levels, but, a sister had called and so they came. They all gathered on the rooftop next to where Soul Train had teleported in to meet Lady Gwenivere, Mallory, Makavell, and Clarisa.

"Stilettos! Crey Tech and Legion have gone to war, and Physiks Tech is in the crossfire! What we need are sisters willing to bloody Crey's nose but good! You know our credo: we put the spiked heel to the throat of crime... well... Crey is one big criminal cartel hiding behind a facade. So lets TAKE THEM DOWN!"

The resulting roar of affirmation shook windows for blocks.

Soul took time out to give Mallory a hug. "You OK? You look a bit scared. Hell you always look scared, but now more than ever. I've seen what you can do... and I believe in you. And, I need your help. Now more than I did when we met on the street. Much more. And ... I think you need this too. For yourself."

She regarded the young woman. "But it's your choice. It always has been."
  4. (( Tanks and artillery? "We had to burn the village in order to save the village"?? ))
  5. (( the question then becomes... is this endgame? because the characters I'm writing are levels 26 and 30... one has nowhere near enough power/expertise to take on all but the lowest-tier Crey agents, and the other, well, she's an empath/archery defender.

Legion has lots of assets... but right now they're completely disorganized. So... what do we have?))
  6. (( as I understand it, the 'lab incident' escalated and caused major problems in Legion chain of command. Some of Legion's units interpreted the chaos as a Crey attack of some kind, and took it upon themselves to respond appropriately. This is how a 'cold war' escalates into a shooting war, folks... one little misstep and all the cards come down.))
  7. (( EDITED for Mallory's post.. sorry, you and I filed at the same time!)))

Gwen realized that time was not on their side at all. She reported what she'd seen to Clarisa. "Legion swept down on that Crey facility like an avalanche. And the Countess won't take that sort of thing lying down. She's probably going to ditch whatever surveillance she has on... on US.. in favor of an all-out rush."

She surveyed the bunker. It was trashed.

"We have to get out of here. Um... Mr. Armor, sorry, don't know your name..."

"Eddy Ramirez, ma'am. Also known as Makavell."

"Right, Makavell. What's your forte? Aside from your head, you look undamaged. Can you hold off any alpha rush if they break the door down?"

    Makavell looked uncertain.

"OK, well do what you can. Clarisa, you're with me, alright? I don't want my potential boss getting offed by a stray round. Mallory?" She glanced at Mallory. Oh great. She whispered a spell, and a brilliant green and blue field surrounded Mallory, waking her up and infusing her with vitality. "Mallory! I need you up and around, kid. Stay with Clarisa once we get to the roof, alright?"

Mallory nodded slowly... her leg still hurt, but she felt like she'd had two cups of coffee poured directly into her bloodstream. She braced herself against the wall and slowly stood on her good leg.

    Gwen turned to the soldiers.

"OK. Heads up! I sure hope you guys have spare magazines, because Crey is going to try and take this place because someone went and spit in the Countess' coffee. I've a score to settle with your commander, Agent Martel, but until he and I meet up, you guys are still supposed to defend Physiks. So defend it. Don't lose your heads, don't go nuts."

With that, she activated Kashaye's medical transponder, and as her friend faded out of view, she also vanished. Soon after, so did Clarisa, Mallory, and Makavell. The soldiers all activated their communications links, and one by one they too vanished from the room.
  8. [ QUOTE ]

Clarisa shouted to Kashaye over her shoulder, "We should expect incoming!"

    [/ QUOTE ]

There was no reply. Soul Train had passed out from the shock, and lay crumpled in a heap on the floor.

Her comlink was still active... and the woman on the other end was getting increasingly insistent. "SHAY! Anybody! What happened? OK, fine, I'm coming in there, I don't care what kind of crazy experiment is going on!"

There was a brite flash, and Lady Gwen appeared out of nowhere. She immediately shivered and put her hand to her temple. What the....?

Then she saw her friend Kashaye. "SHAY! Oh by Merlin's gray beard, NO!" Gwen rushed over and attempted to revive her. Kashaye didn't appear to be wounded... yet she was clearly out cold.

Inexplicably, none of Gwen's magicks seemed to work.

She turned. Others were hurt too. Mallory was out, and the young man in the suit looked dazed and was holding a hand to the back of his head. Lady Gwen immediately went to his side, and flooded him with healing magicks... he still insisted on holding his temples, but at least he wasn't bleeding.

Gwen turned to Mallory, who chose that moment to start to wake up. She groaned, loudly, and rolled over on her side and started dry-heaving from the pain. Gwen applied more spells... these seemed to be effective, as Mallory was able to weakly sit up after a couple of seconds.

At this point, no one appeared injured. The headache was still driving Gwen nuts...

    "You're Clarisa Feynman, aren't you?"

    "Yes. And you are...?"

"Lady Gwenivere. Consort to King Arthur... and more recently, temporally displaced heroine. Kashaye's my roommate, and as close a friend as I have in this timeline. She asked me if I'd be interested in working for you... as her protection... instead of the riot squad over there." She made a dismissive gesture to the soldiers, who were too busy shivering and trying to deal with splitting migraines to notice.

    "What happened?"
  9. [ QUOTE ]

    The metal, of course, collapsed.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Kashaye had just tossed the radio to Clarisa, when she heard a creaking sound behind her. A shot-to-shreds instrument cabinet was canted at an extreme angle... supported by some kind of force field.

And inside the force field... was Mallory.

    "Oh CRAP!"

Just as Kashaye started to run towards the cabinet, the forcefield collapsed, and the cabinet fell on top of Mallory, knocking her insensate and pinning her down.

Kashaye wedged herself underneath the fallen cabinet, and tried to repel it off her assistant.

The repel field failed to manifest.

'Not now, not another secondary mutation!' she thought.

    Still no field.

    Her commlink buzzed.

"Gwen! About time you got here!"

"What's going on? I heard shooting... you hollering for an extraction..."

"Gwen, Mallory's hurt. She's pinned under a cabinet, and .... and I can't repel it off."

"What do you mean you can't repel it off? You've always been able to repel things, Shay."

"Not now. It's like I forgot how! First my flight, and now this!"

She felt a growing rage building inside (( game terms: Vengeance activated!)), and strength born of desperation fueled her. She lifted... she pushed... she fired off Inertial Reduction to help add power... and she managed to lever the cabinet up just a hair.

Mallory was still out... and her leg was pinned as well.

And something else in Kashaye went -ping!- as she... saw... how Mallory and the universe were connected. She could... sense... some sort of n-th dimensional web tied to Mallory, leading off into directions that would twist most people's brains to even theorize about them.

Consciously she didn't know what it all meant, but her subconscious was already making connections, deciphering puzzles, and as a result... with a flash Mallory faded from view under the cabinet and reappeared at the feet of the still-undamaged Eddy "Makavell" Ramirez.

The cabinet crashed to the floor.

Kashaye dropped to one knee and shook her head... how? what? her mind was swinning with questions, and coupled with the stress of the situation, her rage at losing her precious lab and prototypes, she slumped to the ground.

The intercom beeped again. "Shay, what happened? SHAY!!"
  10. [ QUOTE ]
He heard Martel screaming and cussing into the radio in basically every latin language ever to exist, including latin itself!

There was a pause. Apparently he had been cut off. Perhaps the radio was taken by someone else? The soldier heard screaming and yelling coming FROM the radio...someone was not happy back at Physiks...

    [/ QUOTE ]

"YOU TESTOSTERONE-POISONED IDIOTS!!! MY LAB AND PROTOTYPES ARE RUINED! BY YOUR MEN!!! IS THIS WHAT YOU CALL 'PROTECTION'??? BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE CREY HIRED YOU BONEHEADS TO ENSURE MY CONTINUED FAILURE!! YOU COULDN'T HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB HAD YOU TRIED!!!"

Kashaye only stopped yelling because she ran out of breath. She then tossed the radio to Clarisa. "Clarisa... Ms. Feynman... I know this Legion deal is something that can pull us out of the red... but right now, these gun-happy jerks put us several million influence INTO the red! So I think we should go it alone. We'll live longer!!!"
  11. "I THINK S...."

The gunfire stopped, as did the sound of spent shell casings rattling around on the floor.

She took one look at the carnage. Her prototype field emitters... destroyed. The test vehicles.. destroyed. Even the crash ram was riddled with pockmarks and bullet holes. The observation booth window was starred, and the tool cabinets, telemetry gear and other needed equipment was all shredded. Off in a corner, a computer bank, tasked with monitoring and regulating the field harmonics, gave one last gasp, spit sparks and then went completely offline.

Kashaye regarded the officer, a furious look on her face. Her hands, held out to her sides, began to show a buildup of blue kinetic energy.

    "Get...... Me........ MARTELLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
  12. OK, before everyone says that sharing missions will destroy their story arcs and whatnot...

the way it works is, you have to have the same mission QUEUED UP for the offer to be displayed. So if you haven't accepted that mission from the contact/newspaper... it won't make the offer.

So as far as clearing Atta and frostfire and all the others we do over and over ... remember to get the mission from your contact before going in, if you're far enough along to do so.
  13. Kashaye took cover behind a blast shield, while Mallory dived back into the observation booth. Clarisa somersaulted herself over and behind a large set of cabinets.

"What? I dunno, they just showed up!! Clarisa!! This has gone WAY too far!!!"

Kashaye activated her commlink. "Gwen! Come in! I think we're going to need an extraction, Martel's goons have gone trigger-happy! They might be here to protect us, but right now I wanna know who's protecting us from them!!"

    ----

Lady Gwenivere was in the midst of busting up an arms deal with Crey written all over it, when her targets started getting antsy. Cloaking herself, she snuck close to see what was going on.

"Bug out, bug out, our deal is blown, there's military strike units right outside the building. Send in Protectors and Revenants STAT!"

What the... ?? She scooted to a window. Sure enough. Legion was descending upon the operation. In force. This was going to get real messy real fast. She cracked the window open, stepped out onto the roof of the building, and started jumping over buildings. Half way to the tram her commlink beeped. She thumbed it off of 'mute' to hear:

    [ QUOTE ]
"...an extraction, Martel's goons have gone trigger-happy! They might be here to protect us, but right now I wanna know who's protecting us from them!!"

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh no! Kashaye and Mallory! She called up her S.H.E. issued locator beacon. Steel Canyon. She'd have to narrow it down closer once she got there. She activated the commlink, not caring if Legion overheard. "Received and understood and en route."
  14. "CEASE FIRE! We have expensive delicate equipment in here! Perhaps you'd like to blow us all up?"

Kashaye was starting to get really really angry at having to deal with soldiers at every turn. They'd messed up her home life, they'd made shopping impossible, her missions as a superheroine were now one big pick-up team, and now they were interfering with her work. And worst of all, they all had that insufferable "We're men, so we are in charge" mindset.

"ALRIGHT!! You, you, you, all of you, put your weapons on SAFE, and then walk out of here. Your lab clearances have been revoked as of right now. Mallory, please come down and help Mr. Ramirez with his suit." Kashaye opened the door to get into the booth, and prepared to put the isolation field back up.
  15. [ QUOTE ]
Aparrently Eddy had triggered some kind of energy field that surrounded him completely. Nothing could get through it. He was a bit frustrated Miss Parker hadn't told him of the dangers of triggering anything in her lab. But he tryed not to show it.

" Well, this is odd. How can we get this "field" off of the suit?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    "That's a good question... "

Kashaye was interrupted by the arrival of the Legion.

"Whoa whoa whoa! STAND DOWN! You guys take subtlety lessons from Martel, don't you? We just had a little malfunction, everything's fine, no one is in danger!"

She turned back to Makavell. "Our previous tests showed that the field bonded to metal parts. However... I didn't try and disassemble a car while it was so protected."

The Legion team leader wasn't taking Kashaye's word for anything. "I SAID... remove the helmet, and assume the position!"

One of his men, already on edge because of the alarm, brushed his trigger finger a little harder against the trigger than intended...

  16. Kashaye was nonplussed. She'd just finished demonstrating the next big thing in auto safety, and here this... kid.. wanted to show off a powersuit.

"Er... Mr. Ramirez... you're standing next to the emitter array. PLease don't trigger anything that could..."

Too late. Eddie, in his enthusiasm, bumped the delicate array. It shorted out, sending the control computers into fits of what could only be called digital panic. Alarms sounded, and a shimmering force field dropped over the doorway.

<< WARNING! CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL IS IN EFFECT. MESSAGE REPEATS. CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL IS IN EFFECT. >>

"Oh for the luvva Pete... Mallory! Do like I showed you. Command prompt, type 'ENERGY SCAN' and then if it doesn't come back with a threat, shut off the containment field."

Mallory attempted to do so. But somewhere along the line, she hit up-arrow, where her earlier command to run the shield charge was typed. Flustered, she hit Enter.

The arrays, now no longer calibrated, popped a kinetic shield around Makavell's armor... which then glistened like diamond.

Mallory was able to follow Kashaye's commands the second time through... but still, Makavell now had a shield on his armor that hadn't been there before.

"Well, at least we know how to disperse it. Shield your eyes, everyone."

She bashed Makavell's armor with the hammer. No flash. The effect stayed in place. And the armor was undamaged.

    "Uh oh....."
  17. Kashaye turned from her work with the testing to see Clarisa and a young man enter the lab/bunker.

"Help? Well... I haven't tested this with a human occupant, so perhaps... no, that's OK, I'll get one of the lab techs to do it, if I don't do it myself."

She shook her head. "Wait... you've been really busy, and probably haven't had time to read much of the reports what with Legion running all over the place. So I'll show you."

She pressed a large green button on a control by the door, and the ram trundled to the other end of the bunker.

"Observe the car. Not a scratch, right? Showroom clean.. although actually this is a used vehicle we picked up at auction. Now... normally when you hit something with it at highway speeds, it ends up like the other one. Totalled."

She motioned for Clarisa and the young man to stand back. "Mallory, run charge sequence delta-omicron-two."

The two emitters powered up, and then with a reverbrating hum, a field sprang up between them, seeming to collapse into the metal of the car. It sparkled, almost like a diamond.

Kashaye handed Clarisa a pair of blackout goggles, and a large ball-peen hammer. She handed another set of goggles to the young man, as Mallory caused the glass of the observation booth to darken to near-opacity.

"OK, Clarisa. Cave the hood in."

When Clarisa, intrigued, bashed the hood of the car with the hammer, it... stopped, and an actinic-white flash erupted from the impact point. There was no recoil, and she lost her balance for a second, because inconsciously she was braced for something that inexplicably failed to happen. She lifted the goggles.

The lustrous gleaming look was gone... but the hood showed no sign at all that it had just been whacked with a hammer.

She raised her eyebrows and looked at the scientist. "What just happened?"

"The kinetic shield is an energy converter. It takes incoming kinetic force, from the hammer, or the ram, or whatever... and instantaneously converts it to light. We've tuned it so that it doesn't emit anywhere in the EM spectrum that could be harmful, but the flash is bright enough to blind someone for several minutes, hours if you happen to be looking directly at it. The field itself collapses in the process. However... between the time we've set it and when we collapse it... there seems to be no degradation whatsoever. So theoretically one could set an emitter array at the exit to, say, a parking garage, and zap every vehicle that leaves. It's too bulky to mount on the car, as you can see."

Clarisa ran her hand over the finish of the vehicle.

"What level of impact will set it off?"

"That's proving to be tricky to fine tune. I've got it so that peanut shells or bird droppings won't trigger it, but a tossed pebble hitting the windshield or the grill will. I hope to tune it so that impacts that wouldn't be strong enough to damage an uunshielded car aren't enough to trigger the shield."
  18. "YES!!!"

Kashaye was working with what looked like a crash test rig in a bunker under the building. There were two vehicles, and a ram that was driven by cables.

The only thing different from a Highway Safety testing facility was the large and rather interesting pair of emitters placed close by the target area.

One of the vehicles was smashed. The ram had crumpled it into a twisted wreck of metal from the front all the way to the driver side door.

The other...was pristine. The calibration markings stenciled onto its sides weren't even scratched.

Which was unusual, considering the ram had been driven into it at a carefully calibrated speed of 75 miles per hour.

Kashaye, removing a set of blackout goggles to protect her vision from the awesome flare of light energy that had burst off at the ram's impact, opened the driver side door of the vehicle, and removed a cage containing two rats. They were also unharmed, aside from being flash-disoriented.

    "Mallory, how's the log look?"

"Well... according to this.... we just set off a bomb in here... but it was all visible light. Nothing in either high or low energy range."

"Then... it's safe. The field is SAFE! WE DID IT!!!"

    --------------------------------

Lady Gwen perused the printout of the file she'd somehow convinced one of Martel's men to run.

    "Energy Signature Not On File"

Damn. Kashaye was not going to like this. Unless Clover made another attempt to contact her, she was essentially gone.

Oh well. Time to see what she could do to cause more havok and mayhem with Legion's troops.

She entered the bathroom, started the shower running... and then phased out of view. Carefully making her way to the balcony, she then teleported her way to the tram station.

She wanted to call Shay, but knew the conversation would be monitored. It was too bad Kashaye had given up her hash code. The woman was just too trusting sometimes. That's why she needed someone to watch her back, keep her healthy and happy and most of all, SANE.

Gwen wanted all of that to be her job. You didn't need an army to protect one woman. You just needed a few good friends with the proper skills.

  20. Kashaye and Gwen were getting caught up to speed on the project, and assisting Mallory with the layout of the file system, when her cellphone rang.

    "Hello, this is Kashaye Park..."

    The line went dead.

    "Shay, who was that?"

"I don't know." She looked at the caller ID panel on the phone. "It's a payphone... who would call me from a payphone?"

A look of shock crossed her face as she realized who it was. "CLOVER!"

Quickly accessing a database link to City Hall (one that Physiks had set up as part and parcel of the "Hero PR" program), Kashaye typed in "Clover" as a search term.

NO HEROES MATCHING SPECIFIED SEARCH STRING. EXPAND TO WILDCARD?

"DAMN! She didn't make it to City Hall."

Kashaye scrolled down to another listing: "Metacriminal Profiles, Paragon City Police Department" Again, she tried the same search:

"Shay..." Gwen put a hand on her friend's shoulder. "You tried. But we don't have enough to go on, and you're needed here."

"I know Gwen. I shouldn't have cut her loose! If I'd have followed procedure, she'd have been sent to the Zig, they would have put her in the juevile section, maybe even got her some real help. But instead I convinced her to call me, and now I'm as helpless as she was with those binders on..."

An odd look crossed Kashaye's face. "MARTEL! Hey, you... yes, Piccini, is it? Get Agent Martel in here. And tell him to bring those sapper cuffs we had on the girl!" She started to pace, finger tapping aginst her chin. "They're probably still keyed to her, which means... yes, this might work." She sat down at the computer and looked through the inventory of diagnostic equipment and sendsors the lab had available. "YES! Energy signature scanner. We can use that to find her!" She quickly typed up a checkout/requisition order for the scanner, and just as Martel arrived with the binders, a lab tech showed up with the scanner.

"Martel, finally, you guys get to be useful. Those binders.. they have a diagnostic port on them, right? USB, firewire? Great. I need the program."

    Martel started to protest.

"DAMMIT, don't argue. Those binders have an energy signature encoded on them. They have to, that's how the things work. I need to cross-load that signature to THIS." She pointed to the scanner array."

    "What is this about?"

"It's about that girl we apprehended this afternoon, the one I... The one I let go. Riddle me this, Commando. Why would a common criminal call me a mere hour after I and you arrested her on the street? Listen to this."

She played back a digital recording of the call.

LADY GWENIVERE - CONSORT TO KING ARTHUR, 1600-1687 (approximate)
Details: Lady Gwenivere is most well known for her long-term relationship to King Arthur, of the Knights of the Round Table.

She was an accomplished archer and cleric, acting as an in-the-field medic for the Knights as well as offering archery support. She had a fair amount of magical prowess, which she fine-tuned under the tutelage of Merlin, Arthurs companion Magician.

Fictional accounts also attribute her to having an extramarital affair with one of the Knights, named "Launcelot", but the historical record preserved from that time makes no mention of this Knight ever having truly existed.

Unlike the other members of the Knights of the Round Table, no record exists of her death, although there is an inexplicable decline in the morale of the Knights after 1662, at which point she is no longer mentioned.

DESCRIPTION: female, brunette, fit, approx 140 lbs, 5'9". Well mannered. Carries a bow and quiver of arrows.

  23. (( I'll assume that Clover has gone off on her own, and that Martel and his troops have returned with Kashaye to the lab building.))

Kashaye walked into the lobby, to find her SG mate waiting for her.

"Gwen, sorry, we ran into a situation... "

"It's alright. you know me... I'm 1500 years from my own time, a few minutes here and there aren't all that important."

"They are to me. What's up?"

"Well... remember when you called me a while ago? You said that you'd been assigned a bodyguard detail? Well, in all the time I've known you, that's been MY job. Every mission, a few ambushes, even if we just go out and have a good time. So... I was thinking... maybe we make it official."

"Hrmmm. That's a very good idea. Come on, let's head to my office. I want you to meet someone."

The two women, escorted by four guards (two were for Kashaye, the other two were to keep Lady Gwen in sight), walked down the twisted hallways to Shay's office.. where they found Mallory engrossed in a game of Solitaire.

"Hi Mallory. I see you were able to find one of the more importan applications on the system...." She smiled, a little indulgently... and then saw the opened box and the manual out on the desk. "OH! The telemetry pack! I forgot about it completely when those guards all showed up. You read the manual?" Mallory nodded. "And you have it on now?" Another nod. "Good. Again, I apologize if you got left on your own... we'll try to keep that from happening again, OK?"

She turned to Lady Gwen. "Lady Gwenivere... my assistant, Mallory Swanson. Mallory, this is Lady Gwenivere, my housemate and also a member of the Stilettos."

While she waited for an answer, Clarisa hit the mute button on the phone and said to Jane. "Please ring Kashaye and when you have her on the line, transfer it to my cellphone. She may be busy so it could take a few times of trying." Jane nodded and started dialing on the other phone.

In the midst of her attempting to come to grips with what to 'do' with Clover, Kashaye's phone rang.

    "Kashaye Parker speaking."

"Hello Clarisa. Yes, I've been busy out here."

"Oh dear. Yes, well, we've run across a 'stray' who needs some nurturing. She's also out of control... and sooner or later she's going to get hurt."

"Yes I am aware of that. And I understand fully."

"OK. I'll cut her loose for now... I'll give her some leads, perhaps she'll follow them."

"I have a visitor? Who is it?"

"Lady Gwen? Yes! I know her very well. She's my roommate, and a very close friend too."

"Another heroine, one of the Stilettos. An officer, like I am. Magical though, so I doubt we'd...."

"Oh? Now there's an idea. She might go for it. And I'm game as well. Anything to get this Agent Martel and his Spec Ops platoon off my back."

"OK. Mallory should be in my office, downloading her telemetry log. From what I've seen her do, I don't think she'll pose any problems with the lab equipment."

"Right. Oh yes... One more thing.... next time the board of directors meets, we may have something other than red numbers to show them."

"I'll do better than that. We're doing a confirmation test tomorrow. Why don't you come down and see it? I think... you'll be pleased."

    "Right. Bye."

Kashaye hit the 'End' button and hung the phone back in its little pouch under her cape. She then knelt down by Clover.

"Clover, I've decided... to let you loose. But.. before I take these binders off, I'd like to ... offer you some things. This..." she held up a business card, "has my office, home, and cell numbers on it. You need anything, or just want to talk, call me. Collect if you have to. This..." She then held up 200 inf in small bills, "goes into your pocket, or your shoe, or wherever it won't get stolen. This isn't a handout, it's a gesture of friendship. By accepting it, I want you to promise to ask for help rather than just rip people off, OK? Now, lastly, THIS..." she held up another card, which said "Whitmoore Apartments" in bold letters, "is an apartment building run by the city. If you are registered as a hero, you can stay there for free. But, the catch is, you have to use your talents to fight crime, not perpetuate it. That also means training. There are professional trainers at Hero Corps and downtown at City Hall, as well as elsewhere around the city. So... IF you want to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and become someone people look up to, instead of run away from... I strongly suggest that you do this."

She regarded the girl, waifish, thin, dirty, and still looking scared.

"Sugah, I know you feel strange and things get scary when you're around heroes. But I think you got a heart in there too, and that's why I think you'll turn out OK."

She took Clover's shackled hand, tucked all the items into it, and then leaned close to whisper into her ear. "if you want to become me for just a little while longer, nod your head. I trust you not to hurt anyone... and I always thought the speed and the jumping over buildings was the most fun I ever had. And who knows, you might get hug out of it too."

(( if Clover nods, Kashaye will release the inhibitor cuffs while she's still holding her hand. Otherwise she'll let go and stand back so that one of Martel's men can do it. ))

(( also, want to tie the plot with Clover up if we can, or at least do something to end that episode... I have some ideas that might make Clarisa's issues with the board easier to deal with... as in PROGRESS in the lab...))
