So, day after tomorrow is the last day of data collection. We could still use another 10 responses. I won't be online tomorrow, so thanks in advance to all the people who have already helped us, and to anyone who does so in the next day.
Cheers -
Hi all,
Thank you so much for you help so far - both for filling out the survey and for giving me feedback on it. Our research cannot happen without your help. We just wanted to announce that we will be collecting data until February 7th (including Feb 7th). We appreciate your help if you have 15 minutes or so to spare to fill out the survey. We define customization quite broadly, but would like to hear how others think about customization in games....
Thanks again!

Quote:Yes, I agree that it is a bit tricky. May be I should have worded as: your main/character you play most or the character you have the most fun playing. The "main character/character you play most" bit is also tricky - for example, I tend to focus on individual characters for a length of time. For example, my Lv50 controller is the most fun to play, but due to concept restrictions I don't play him as much as, say, my recently rolled scrapper.
I might have given more room. In fact, I will edit the question right now as the survey still open for 10 days or so. Thank you! -
Thanks... yah, it may take longer than we originally estimated. Thanks for all the responses
We will also be happy to hear peoples thoughts on customization here in this thread. There is no such question in the survey per se ... but feel free to write your thoughts here. -
Heh, thanks! I tried hard to make all the reviews sound appealing. Not sure if I succeeded.

Quote:Aaargh, board ate a large post, will try to re-create.That was not clear to me - you may want to re-word it.
I agree with Sam, BTW, that choosing between CoH & CoV and choosing a "Main" was hard to do because I have 60+characters, all beloved. I chose my first level 50, as she is as much of a "main" as I have, for purposes of responding.
We are not sure how we would re-word the question without it being either too limiting or too cumbersome. The open ended questions are where we actually get to hear what you're thinking, so the way you interpret and answer the question gives us information one way or another.
For example, under gear, responses could range from "My character uses a gun in his powerset, I'd like to be able to do twirls with my gun, and shoot rainbows." to "I'd like to be able to buy/make/find different guns to use in different situations."
Customization can range from cosmetic to mechanics... all of them are valid. It can also range from total customization(i.e. many aspects of character creation are fully customizable) to simply offering a number of choices(i.e. choosing between powers for your power-set).
As for choosing a main, don't stress too much. Customization is the focus of the study. We do look at some of the demographic-subgroups, but many, like main archetype will simply be too small sub-groups for statistical analysis. We do like to know what character you are thinking of most as you answered the questions, but its not the end of the world if you simply pick one of your favorites. -
@Ad Astara... Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will edit the statements you pointed out.
In terms of questions on page 7/8, these are mostly, if it (i.e. animation) exists, what you like about it. If it does not, what would you like to be able to do about it in terms of customization? For example, for animations, what types of animations would you be able to customize, and why? -
good points! Thank you Samuel Tow. I will modify the choices according to your suggestions and hope it will help players to go through the survey.

Hi all,
We are part of a game research lab at Teachers College, Columbia University, NY. Last year, we posted a survey study, and we were gratified by the responsiveness of the community here. We promised that we would post the results when we analyzed them. Below is a conference paper that we're about to present, based on that survey.

Now to new study! Customization study will become a dissertation. So, as part of a larger pilot study, we have revised our survey to try to help us get clearer results in various areas. We would be much obliged if you would take the time to fill this out. It should take 10-15 minutes. This study is approved by Institutional Review Board, and there are more information and a consent form on the first page of the survey.
Here's the new survey:

Thanks alot for your time and help,

As before, we welcome any constructive criticism.
