I have played a plant/storm and ill/storm to high lvls and my beef with those combos is that i never felt like a master of weather but some other hero with storm powers thrown in. Defenders were always too weak for me after MANY attempts to feel mighty. Maybe a MM will feel stronger if I don't take any personal attacks.

When you think of awe inspiring mob defeating power, what storm combo amongst all archetypes would fit that description? -
When does sonic blast become the blast set that the defender community raves about? I have been on a search for a powerful defender combo, and tried rad/sonic, dark/sonic up into the high 20's and with my dark I kill no faster than dark/dark, and with my rad/sonic i still take ages to kill anything.
Against hard targets, like bosses, it feels faster than my other defenders, but overall I don't feel that I am getting anything special while leveling up. Also on teams, I know people rave about force multiplication that sonic brings, but in the mid-levels it just doesn't "feel" like I am adding that much to the battlefield.
Is it too early in my toon's career to be complaining about sonic? Plus once in a blue moon someone says that can get to near scrapper damage with defender blasts, is that only with a HUGE investment in IOs?

So I made a plant troller and so far it is everything that I wanted.... No tanks necessary in my usual radio missions
. I am trying a rad defender also to see which feels more powerful (feels being the word, don't really care about min maxing), what is the best way to handle the alpha as a rad def? Dropnthe toggles and pray?

So based on what I have read, I am thinking that Dark Miasma, Traps, Plant Control and possibly Rad will give me what I am looking for... Thanks for the input and help!
Of those four what is the current community thought around solo speed/fun factor? Does everything still play the same since i14? -

Thank you for the replies so far, and I appreciate the dark miasma suggestion. I know that most trollers are OK with an alpha, but I guess I am looking for PA type powers that canget things started without having to resort to tactics that need your team to think all that much. I tried an ice troller for example and I hated the whole ice slick behind a corner thing. I am not looking for a tank mage, just a toon that feels like a hero and doesn't have to wait on lazy tankers.

After a long hiatus, power customization has drawn me back into the wonderful world of City of Heroes and as re-awakened my altitis. My only lvl 50 is an ill/storm troller, which i created because i was so sick of being on teams and having the tank being afraid of jumping in and taking the alpha. I am now looking to roll another toon, and i am looking for help in finding a ranged toon that can negotiate an alpha strike almost as well as my illusion controller.
I rolled a traps defender as I wanted to play with the seeker drones, but the traps play style kind of wears on me as it takes almost 3 seconds to place traps and with a fast moving team it felt awkward. Could anyone suggest a CoH powerset combination (for blaster/def/troller) that manages the alpha well? should i just keep trudging on with traps?
