As the crab Beastys arm swung at The Robot Guy (( Quicksilver)) Ethan saw his opening and drew a bead on the underside of the crab arm where it joined the main body, slowing his breathing as he let the missile lock on target and with a small movement of the trigger completed the circuit that sent the warhead on its way..
The roar and back wash from the Missile Launcher drew the attention of a number of onlookers, and as Ethan hurriedly reloaded he scanned the faces hoping to see some signs of friendliness. Not slowing to see the effect of the first missile, and with a second round loaded Ethan move to his right to seek another shot. -
Arriving near the metal crab beast monster thing, Ethan could see a number of ..different.. looking people up to stuff against the beasty.
Hanging a little back he considered the beasty huge, metal, aggressive, clearly something that need putting down. The question was how, 12ga shotgun round did not look to be a likely answer, so time to swap out the Combat Shotgun. Now given he size of the beasty heaver armour was not going to help, just slow him down, and so keep the Talon suit for now.
Ethan started to search through his weapons collection, , muttering...
Something big , and with plenty of bite Gauss rifle ? , na out of Micro Fusion cells again, that Alien disintegrator , na need to get too close, looks like basics then, Missile Launcher it is , now how many Missiles do I have ..
From his large back pack a long metal tube like weapon appears and a small beep indicates its system are on, digging deep into another pack a yellow tipped missile is found and loaded into the Missile Launcher.
Ethan stood and swung the Missile Launcher up onto his shoulder, now, he thought, if one of these other folks can keep the Beasty distracted, I can see if I can spot its vulnerables . -
Ethan called a time out, this place was too big and strange to wander, and that Crab machine did not look friendly. Swapping out the Blackhawk for the newly rebuilt Combat Shotgun, his preferred urban weapon, Ethan also suited up in a full set of Talon Combat Armour, lastly making sure Stim packs were to hand, Ethan now felt more ready to venture deeper into this Kings row region.

The Drone that had obviously been seeking Ethan swung and moved off, upward over the bridge.
With no other clue to follow Ethan set off after the robot. The side of the bridge provided just enough handholds for his assent to the road way, years of crossing hostile terrain meant he kept low and his eyes took in everything. The drone was moving fast, it was reaching the opening to a huge four lane road tunnel.
Intent on the drone Ethans brain could only take snap shots of the surroundings, lights lots of lights , far too many for safe travel, the road surface un-cracked , clear and clean , buildings not in ruins or boarded up , a group of men, ragged , armed , ..no, they had not spotted him Wait !! there with the men a huge hulking figure , a SuperMutant ?!. long tuned reflexes added speed to Ethans gait and he dashed for the cover of the road tunnels walls.
Squatting low Ethan ran his standard checks , his Pip-Boy report no Rads, always good, with no time to spare if he wanted to keep after the robot Ethan ran down the tunnel hugging the wall.
So far having been under a bridge and in a road tunnel Ethan had not had much to look up at, now as the exited the road tunnel his gaze was draw up first to an intact road sign, naming this new area as Kings Row, next to the huge walls of some alien power (( the war walls)) and thirdly to a cluster of robots (( the Drones)) circling a huge metal thing , what appeared to be a gigantic mechanical crab. Coloured Gunmetal grey apart from a red glow coming from underneath.
Ethan sort cover, fast, very fast .. -
Ethan slide into what little cover the cars wreck provide, and drew the Blackhawk magnum from its holster. Rapidly he discarded the idea of hauling out his Ranger battle armour, there was no time to suit up, and instead he swapped his Shady Hat for one of the less dented Talon Combat Helmets in his large backpack.
Sweeping around the bridge pillar came the drone that Dr Mechano had dispatched, it scanned, looking, seeking ..
Ethan peered at the Drone, clearly it was not a Mister Gutsy, or a Mister Handy, but it was some sort of robot. Finger tense on the trigger of the .44 Ethan slowly move out from behind the wreck to see what the inquisitive robot wanted .. -
The ragged clothing took a handfull more rips and scuffs as Ethan departed the rift into a heap of rusting metal and accumilated junk. It was night, and in the dark the echos of his arrival sounded fifty times as load. Ethan struggled to gather himself and take in his surroundings.
Tall stone pillars , a stone roof , a lack of walls , junk metal , and a damp stone floor, a strong smell of sewers . He risked a slow movement and pulled a set of goggles from a belt pouch. The revealing power of the goggles redrew his new enviromet , the pillars and roof became a huge bridge, the floor a strom drain, the junk, a automoblie and household rubish, he was in a place of technology. To his rear the bridge joined the drain wall, a metal gratting bore the label ...Skyway Access Point 43-SW-B22
With no responce to his noisey landing Ethan relaxed and started sorting through his many packs and pouches, in part to check for damage , but mainly to find the last of his dried meat to deal with his hunger.
Part of the Device started to beep a warning, Ethan flicked the goggles back on and scanned the sector, something was comming.... -
Within the cramped confines of the arched tunnel, the ragged figure stood impassively staring at the blank wall, nothing happend for what seemed an age, and then a faint sound could be heard beyond the wall. The man shifted, flexed in an effort to free up his bones and stood tall. Selecting a device of bronze and silver he directed it at the wall.
The beam of yellow and green played over the surface and the bricks and mortar, slowly at first, but then with gathering speed they started to crumble and turn to dust, the center portion of the wall fell away under the beams power, dust filled the already stale air .The man raised a mask over his face and shut off the beam.
Not waiting for the dust to clear he stifly move forward and bent to pass through the breached wall. Beyond lay a small space not ten feet square, enclosed by walls of the same bricks. On the natural bedrock floor was a crude X made of twisted metal lenghts, in mid air above the X a howling storm of dark hues and gases rage, The storm the size of a dogs head, gave out a hissing and scratching sounds of growing volume.
The man pulled a book from one of his packs and turned to the marked page. The directions and sketches that had lead him here had proven to be correct, his timing was perfect. The storm expanded as it raged, driving the dust from the bricks in to a whirling bizzard, and yet the glow of the storm shone through the dust.
Returning the book to its pack the man looked to the heart of the storm and waited. Soon he gauged it to have grow to a size suitable for his purpose, taking half a step backward the launched himself at the storm. At the point of impact the storm let forth a screaching howl and swallowed the man whole, with this the storm seemed to loose its structure and flailed about as if coming apart. Where the storm touched the walls the
bricks cracked and split, in a moment the arches lost thier form and in a roar of falling rock the small room and tunnel collapsed in upon itself.
Time passed and the noise of the storm and the collapse stopped, slowly the dust started to settle....... -
yes , all the beasty heads seem to lack any sort of neck, which is a pity as most of those in the new pack are biters with powerful necks, that allow ripping and shaking of prey.
-
Yep , once again a thanks to Bunny and Co. these events are a fun time to bring out a few alts for a meet and chat, and making new contacts ..
i even learnt that the Foudry has a magic division..which is going to prove helpful with some plotage.
A big thank you . -
My earth/strom -er has now reached 40, and over due a respec, he has been sitting idle since i19 and free stam came out.
So what is the current thinks on what not to take , and which pool are worth it from 41 upwards.
thanks in advance for all advice. -
well that does sound more science that magic, robots could push it towards tech if you wanted, but science sound the most on target.
-
may i ask what power sets you plan to give this alchemist? it may give us a clue as to how his/her alchemy functions in the CoH-verse. If its say dual pistols using flintlocks to fire alchemical ammo, then science looks a good pick, if its dual blades, with empowered swords may be its more leaning to magic. Of couse it may be the power set dont directly relate to the alchemy at all, say Mar.Arts.

Quote:No, what you say is .. what do you mean "A" ?
-
Ok Tech and i am being very cruel here , what your saying is it is better to kill someone than give them the chance to reform.
Yes cutting off limbs sound very evil , but what if it prevents Hammerjack from harming others while at the same time lets him live and possiblely become a different person. Unless you are going to make the claim that hammerjack is an ultimate evil that cannot be stopped. Which sort of goes against all we have beem saying about our Characters. If our Toons are not balck and white absolutes why is Hammerjack? doent that just make it easy for the hero, allowing him an excuse to kill him, rather than deal with the causes of his evil.
yes sorry it is a unfair question, but if we are going to consider our characters to this degree of depth, should we not assume the world and its peoples they live in work the same way ? -
Quote:Hmm....did we define killing as a definite evil, though?
For example, the recent mini-fiction snippet I did with SABRE team, where Chief put down the unreformed villain Hammerjack. Now, yes, killing is bad. But when it comes down to a choice of two evils, it makes sense to the Chief to choose the lesser. In this case, that is using the locale of the Rogue Isles to 'legally' (i.e. theres practically no law there) to kill a Villain to prevent him from, in future, killing more innocents.
.
i think you just made the point Tech ..lesser of two evils .. but still an evil, would it not have been an even lesser evil to imprison Hammerjack in you own prison, with out trial ?
or to hand him over to some other people who would keep him locked away, or cut off his limbs and remove his eyes, or send him to the Psi police fro mental reprogramming, all lesser evils than killing ? hence the scatter graph in 4D. -
Yet again a very good point, hopefully our characters will evolve over time, so yes 4D.

Prior to GR there was a binary good/evil view to the CoX-viewpoint. GR pushed things more toward an Iron/Dark Age viewpoint.
I'm not saying that the characters can't have black and white morality (though sticking to a pure good/evil view is potentially a fast track to becoming what you hate), but the players have to be aware that it's not that simple. Vigilantes are flawed heroes, not villains. They may kill, which has been defined as an evil act. Rogues, however, may think killing is unnecessary and avoid it, but they are villains. So the bad guys may be morally better than the good guys now.
Very good points Birdie. Even back when CoH and CoV where totally seperate us RPer where making questionable heroes mainly because we are playing people rather than comic book sketches.
Our character heroes do many minor morally "wrong" things from the " i am bored , i think i will go beat up some hellions " to staying out to the wee hours at shady drinking clubs. If they really lived in the media run world we do they would spend most days explaining their actions to the press.
So to try to use RL cultural / social morals to gague good and evil is very difficult, may be we have reached the point where we need to redefine our terms into Hero ,Vig , Rog, Vill ..then qualify them with the moral , immoral , good , evil , lawful , illegal , kind, mean, and any others people can think of , labels .
Moving us from the line gragh of where you character stands , to a scatter graph, possible even in 3 D. -
Ponders in how many villain missions / arcs do the Villains beat heroes , compared to beating other Villain groups ..?
-
TBH Fans i dont see Paragon as a narrow point of view , given that we have Praet, Cim , Ourb, Rogue Isle , Protal corps worlds , WS and PB , Rikti , and more trans dimmensional characters that any where else , plus a large number of characters from different era's and cultures ..Paragon is a massive mix of views, opinions and tastes ..
-
the trouble is Villains do not win .. heck they dont even get the tittle roll in the comics they are just there to give the hero something the vent their angust on .. ok it would also be fair to say the heroes never get a complete victor , the Joker or Dr Doom always coems back, but they do get a points win and scupper the Villians plot.
When RP a villain around heroes i do off screen plots. None of my villains have major world take over plots, most just want to carve out a bit of space to live in, or in some cases just to carry on exsisting. I do assume my villains can win in their day to day busines ,be it robbing banks stealing magic tomes or what ever, beyond that i do not fell the need for them to be making a huge world take over move. For major plot lines like that i prefer to use a NPC vilain, or maybe a retired RP toon.
If we want villains to take over we would need more of a RvR setup that effects the wider game, which would need its own server and rule set. -
I find myself in totaly agreement with Agonus and i feel dispite all its claims the Unionverse is no where near the shared IC universe that is often claimed. I am well aware of events that happen at GG, in Pok d and in some SG activities that are mutally exclusive and take very different canon and non canon views, may be once there was stronger ties, but certainly no more. Prehaps it is time to accept that changes occur and that close coordination is no more.
The greatest difficulty i find is that someone has to loose, hero or villain, and to have this pre arranged i always feel spoils the event. personally PVP is not the answer, i dont make PVP builds and i tend not to play the right power sets that make a good PVP toon.
The nearest to an answer i have found is for one sides action to create a challenge that the other side needs to over come, play through a series of these and get an averages score to see who is the winner, this allows RPed direct conflicts along the way where one side is foce to withdraw, get over the problem of the Villain being captured or the herro killed. TBH most of these ideas only work if you have a person willing to take on the burden of Plot Master and run the event, often at the expence of getting to play their own toon that much. -
sorry Jade we did kind of stray ..but we can all blame FFM, vampires is always a fun topic to rant about.
so getting back to characters ..
My toons that are evil , and those that are bad but not evil.
My MM Necro/FF Ravenna Krone.. is evil , she is a medical doctor and a modern day necromancer , and is a totally nasty bit of work, she will go to any lengths to further her research, and has a number of arrest warrants outstanding from murder and maiming by means of medical experiments. She views people as material and considers herself bound by no mans rules. Note she is not insane, she recently did some work for the KG supergroup as a medical expert , she can function perfectly well in the normal world , she just chooses to do evil.
My Brute DM/WP Blood Ghoul .. is evil, he is a ghul, based on the djinni myths, a feaster on the dead , a corrupt being, whos aim is self-gratification and sees the world as a prize to be seized , and its people as things to be enslaved.
My MM ninja/dark Hieronymus Crovas ..is evil, he is a summoner of demons and has made many a dread pact with them, sacrificing innocents to pay his debts. (( his ninja are in fact demon possessed humans that he has enslaved ))
The rest are, well, villains, in that they are criminals, My MM thugs/poison Archibald Vyllain.. basically is east end gangster drug dealer. My VEAT Spider Operative Thrice , is an amoral thug , My VEAT Widow Katipo, is a follower of Lord Recluse, a minion. While the rest are just character who live in RI and have fallen into unlawful way, some only being counter as criminals because they have broken RL laws. -
Quote:If that were true, I'd consider all humans evil then.
State of being...defined by what? Humans? We define anything we don't like or agree with as 'Evil'. Even other humans.
I'd better stop before I go off on a rant about that
this agreeing to disagree is fun ..we must do more of it ..
and its not a rant if you let others get a word or two in ..
and no i do not define things i dislike or disagree with as evil, as for human, they get a choice, which kind of makes the evil ones even more evil ..IMHO -
Quote:i think i see where your views split .. taking the vampire for example your saying his acts determine if he is evil or not, where as i would say that he is evil as that is a vampire's state of being ..he may be able to become non evil , but then he is no longer a vampire.No probs. Ok, point by point;
Vampires: Entirely as maleable as humans. Potentially more likely to become evil, due to possessing more power, but the same could be said for meta-humans. Powers over darkness do not immediately equate to being evil. No link with 'god' required, not everything is always tied to religion.
Leon, as my personal example, has a code that he sticks to. While he is very easily considered 'Bad' (i.e. doesnt obey the law, disregard for authority) he's not evil. For instance, he would never harm a child (within reason, freaky cyber-christ children that tried to kill him would get dealt with) and he only steals very important things (he has a well stocked Swiss Bank Account for everything else)
Zombies; Magical zombies, while frequently the shambling dead. Technically just the animated dead, may or may not have their/a mind attached. If so, then they are the same as any human or sentient being.
Werewolves. Not always cursed, can be born as well. Not always evil, either. Same arguement for vampires, power corrupts etc. Not always. Fully down to interpretation.
Demon/Daemon. Again, different definitions exist. Demons are another stereotype that gets done to death. Demons and spirits in other mythos' other than Greco/Roman and Christian ones were equally portrayed as good and evil, as far as I know. Again, common perception and over-use effects portrayal.
Mobster: Uhm...usually, yes. Not always 'evil' though. Greedy likely, doesn't necessarily mean evil.
Merc: Again, would heavily contest that. Just being a merc does not instantly forbid people from having a moral code. While rare, again with the whole power thing, moral mercs are still both potential and real. It all comes down to the people.
Peacebringer: Unclearly defined, yes. Amoral? Uhm, not really. Both Sunstorm and Shadowstar, while pretty focussed on what is best for their kind, wouldn't be Heroeside if they were amoral. They'd do things that jeopardised human lives, to the point of their race being lumped in with the Rikti as 'Potentiall dangerous aliens'. So, amoral gets a no from me.
Nictus, now, I'd say are amoral or just plain evil.
and yes when i use the term demon..i do mean fire, horns, lives in hell, likes rock and roll ..the classic western view of them ....
still at least this means there will be at tleast two differnt takes on any toons crated on any of these classic forms ..
