    Oh. My. Freaking. Atheism.

I solved the problem. Everything works now. After two days burning my brain over this, the solution was one line:

    JointZ(JDest) = JointZ(JSrc)

The destination joint was not inheriting the parent's Z coordinate. That was the entire problem.

I HAD LEFT OUT ONE LINE.

Bane of developers of all type out there...

"What do you mean I left out a semicolon?"

Though for me, the problem is more using '=' instead of '==' in boolean checks. 10 years and that bad habit still haunts me at the worst of times...
  2. I think that's from a RWZ mission, where the Rikti are raiding Portal corp. If no one fills in the details by the time I get home later tonight, I can flashback to it and get the map name for you.

I don't think, in this mission, that the portals are destructible, they're part of the map.

*laughing* Would you believe I never even thought of that?

I think I should go for something like my "Value of PWNage" video starring this dweeb. I'll need a toon for TomStrong and a toon for Dwight-whateverhisnameis. (At least crackmonkey, while also less than complimentary on my video, had the guts to enter, and is also willing to share some demo secrets with me that I admired in his video.)

I think I finally found a target for my threat of "having someone get pwned by an army of Gears". Either that or I'll find a way to make Hamidon (or Bat'zul) eat them. Or have someone shove them off the top of the globe in Atlas.

Thanks, Obsidius, I knew I could count on you to help me keep things in perspective!

Oh, one thing I am curious about in this contest - there's no way to see how many votes a given entry has gotten, right? (So you can't tell who's winning along the way?) I actually hope not - it should keep the five finalists from getting deep-sixed by the Army of Morons.

Honestly, if you do that, I think they end up winning. Now, granted, I've not been in the crosshairs like you guys have, but the little trolls want attention. Is it really worth your time, spending creative energy on something based off these guys?

No matter what you do, they're going to poo-poo your efforts. The fact that they're probably shill accounts, created not even a week ago, means they have nothing to lose at all. The only way to beat them at their game is not to play...
  4. One other thing to note is that you earn GameTrailer dollars and GT experience for posting, the former which can be used to obtain real world items, the latter which does something to influcence the rate you earn. So posting a lot in a shotgun manner is actually encouraged.
  5. GameTrailers.com is owned by SpikeTV, so draw what sort of conclusions you want to from that...

I'm thinking that once this contest is over, it's the last time I have anything to do with GT and its users.

Well, you better slip over to the Retrospectives page to see if there's anything you want to watch.

    Oh, and don't miss Monty Oum's stuff. He's a one-man Pixar!

The Final Fantasy retrospectives just made my jaw drop. Especially the FF6 one...and I'd never finished the game...

Besides, KungFu, considering I had Lord Recluse and Statesman MOSHING in one of my videos, I doubt they're gonna spaz about you having them playing poker!

  8. For me, when I am telling a story, I work on the theme I attempting to examine, then from that build backwards to build the plot, filling in the characters as needed.

I don't want to get on a rant about theme vs. plot, as I'm not an English major and actual English majors would school me.

Those of you looking for the cliffnotes version, example - the plot of Lord of the Rings is trying to destroy the ring; the action that happens between the characters, background, setting, etc of the story. The theme of Lord of the Rings (or one of them) is temptation, how each character pits their desire to surcome to their wants versus their desire to do what they know is right.

Another example, my movie for the contest, Do No Harm. I took the prompt given to us, "Your darker side" as the theme of my video. One of the plot points I like to revisit again and again in the CoH world is the common, everyday person, how they must act and feel in this crazy, topsy turny world of Paragon/RI, so I didn't want to have a hero per say to examine "Your darker side". I needed someone more common, more everyday.

The constraints of the contest, 2-4 minutes and me not ever having demoedited or movie make before meant I had to use an instantly recognizable character. I was able to save time by using something that had an existing set piece, like a military bunker, hospital, or police station.

Well, military bunkers and police were already actively fighting, acting heroic on the front lines. I wanted something else, so I focused in on the doctor or nurse. I was going to use a nurse, as the dynamic of a female fighting back against a male is a more effective tool/key than a male fighting back against a male (at least in western society), but the restrictions of one voice actor led me to use a male as my main character, so I could record.

So what would make a doctor in Paragon City examine his dark side? Well, I imagine a world of superpowered beings fighting would involve a lot of collateral damage; a lot of injuries to innocents, and that over time a doctor will reach a breaking point.

From this point, everything sort of fell into place, how such a broken doctor would lash out, how he could skirt his own convictions, etc etc.

Once all this is mentally scaped out, I tend to use a layering effect. Add something, add something else, revisit the first, add something new, revisit the previous add, add something new, revisit the previous add, etc, etc. Due to time constraints (ie I was running out of time to submit my entry) I didn't get a chance to do that with the Do No Harm (Check out my story 'Wild Growth' at the old City of Stories podcast for layering. It starts with redefining the checkpoints into the guard's way of thinking for the listener, then slowly breaks into the desperate and confused thinking of the guard, every so often using the Greek letters to ground the story)

So yeah, that's my usual story telling frame work.

so i supose asking BaBs or Posi "please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please can i use lord recluse and statesman in my video of them sitting around a poker table deciding the future of paragon city" would be out of the question.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, all you need to demo edit that is a table, and the models for Lord Recluse and Statesman. Like previously said, the best bet would be to demorecord you and a friend in the Pocket D sitting at a table, then edit out your two characters, replacing them with the Lord Recluse and Statesman models. In fact, that'd probably be a good way to get your feet wet doing it, if you are interested.

Check out the resources found in this link, it has all the info you need to know to get started.

Well, I had a great time tonight. Sorry I wasn't very communicative. Typing isn't my strong suit, so I usually focus on blapping. By the time I could type out any smart remarks, the moment would have passed and y'all would have been halfway across the map.

LOL - Was I really the only death in the whole TF?

wow so many videos. You guys did awesome! Good luck to everyone that entered. I hope the winner will post pics of themselves with their new car when they win heh.

  12. I've not seen a single one of these ads. Every movie I view has no ad...maybe it's because I'm logged in?

Whichever one looks the coolest! It's just the Hess TF. I don't think I've seen anyone lose that one as long as most of the members stick around. Plus we're on the Test server so XP/badges don't matter. I think we're way into Fernando's territory, where it is better to look good than to feel good.

(Hmmm, though Tesslah will sure be wanting some endurance recovery. Her power sink is going to go away on this TF. Ouch.)

So now it's down to 8baller and StoneFalcon... I think I just got knocked out of the running.

Actually, I'm not so sure...I think the user ratings are just that, user ratings, not an official ranking of who's moving on. From the main page,

Best of all, we'll let YOUR voices be heard before we ultimately decide who will win the most super prize of all! Check back right here on August 18th to find out which submissions will be declared finalists and cast your vote!

    [/ QUOTE ]
All that says to me is "We'll let you look at them all before we decide which ones are finalists, which, at that time, you vote". The user ratings are on all videos on the site, so I don't think they're using them for voting purposes, yet.

I may be wrong, and this may actually make you feel worse when you realize that the governing council will pick what they feel is the best 5 based on what ever criteria they feel important.

And with as many unique, creative, and distinct interpretations of the theme, who knows what they are looking for? (Personally, I'm hoping they're looking for doctors who mentally screw with villain's heads, but that's just me...)

TF on Test - primarily because I've never been fond of playing on Virtue.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    We're not all bad.

Either works for me (if on virtue I can Sugar Daddy alts with inf and crafted IOs), or I can copy over to test. That said, my schedule on Saturday is iffy at best...
  17. A second batch are uploaded, including mine. I'm official!

Now comes the flood of negative comments!
  18. I have an Eden scheduled for Saturday afternoon, and a sg event for Saturday evening. If those finish up (What time is this anyways) I'm game for test servering it up.

OMG - After I finished my vid and got it submitted, I have discovered the absolutely COOLEST THING.

The CoX graphics engine actually has a GAME that you can PLAY!!!

It's a lot of fun, too...

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Yeah, but it's kinda hard.

I mean, I tried the following commands a few minutes into my STF subroutine:

    528000 112358 NPC Signature_Lord_Recluse_Escape
    528000 112358 POS 3223.3432 14 -233.389
    528000 112358 PYR 0 -1.57 0
    528000 112358 HPMAX 4600
    528000 112358 HP 4600
    530000 112358 HP 0

And he wouldn't die. They need to nerf Recluse, I mean, how are you supposed to kill him?!?
  20. Whole bunch of movies just showed up on the main contest site...not mine, but still...

Hey Stone, welcome to CoX community. Nice job on the film, I think the best part was the voice acting, very nice.

One thing though man, Game Trailers/Toyota/MTV have imposed some pretty....mmmm...interesting rules on this contest. Not sure if they're going to show it on Spike TV or what but they're being VERY careful about copyright elements including external sounds and music not pulled directly from the game.

That may give ya problems. Which is a shame, cause it's a very nice piece.

We'll let the legal folk decide.
    Todd

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, all the sounds (that I didn't create myself) are bought and paid for, and I did all the music myself. I've never heard of a filmmaking contest where this wasn't okay, considering in the 'real' world this is a non-issue, legally. So if they have a problem with it, then it's just ridiculous and they are just imposing arbitrary rules for no particular reason.

Also, what's this 'demo' thingy everyone's talking about? Heh. Sounds like a lotta extra work though.

    [/ QUOTE ]

To my knowledge, part of the release for entry of this contest is that you give all rights of sounds that aren't NCSoft (aka the animation sounds) over to GT.com. So those of us who recorded our voice give the rights of these clips over to NCSoft, totally kosher.

If you bought 3rd party music/sound, or use stock clips, you can't hand over rights to those. In either case, the rights for you are to use, but the rights are not there for you to hand over.

Now, I know nothing about copyright, so I may be wrong, but this is the angle I think the powers that be are taking...

Demo editing is basically scripting the game so you don't have to be in game to capture video, or, do things that currently don't happen in the game. An example in my video is having Rulurrlu eyeballs fire the radiation blast snipe animation.

Check out this link and this list for more information. I'm sure there are other, better threads, but these two should give you the map you need.
