  1. Dear OP,

I understand your frustrations at the downtime of the game and hope you have a good day in spite of it. I too consider it a misfortune as I am returning after a long break (my old 'puter sploded) and seem to find that some of my time is spent watching the server status, hoping for them to boot up again.

I find it difficult to hatch my insidious machinations when the world does not exist. Many kittens have perished in the interim, and much of the fur is still in my teeth. My dental hygienist will likely cry on my next visit. I hope I won't have to aggressively silence him, as it is difficult to find a good dentist with industrial strength hardware. Kittens, while seemingly innocuous, are murder on the molars, you know... but so sinfully decadent!

And to some of you other forumites... you realize, I'm sure, that as often as people might post a repetitive topic, that responses like "Another of the same thread..." or "This doesn't belong here", or "The OP's title is blah-blah-blah" is not unlike the behavior you choose to chide. It is, in my opinion, a tad hostile and trite... generally I can respect that. Even still... this I find irksome, as I only want to hear admonitions from one dictator... myself. So how 'bout we each agree to rule our own fiefdoms, and only try to take over others when need for expansion demands it? After all... this council is to exchange ideals and information as well as being the occasional sounding board. If there is truly a violation we have moderators to handle it. It's the greatest perk of being dictators after all... delegating authority while alighting our thrones and gobbling up kittens. Perhaps those predilections are not shared though. Hmm... a world without kitten crunching... too horrible to ponder.

Well... I really need to mop up all this kitten juice before it shorts out another 'puter.

    Regards,

    Priesteater.

Bob: So this is City of Heroes... *Showing him his screen* I thought you might think it was cool.

Ed: *Dumb grin plastered across his face* Sweet! Um, I feel like I'm getting ill... eh, I think I have some sick leave accrued... yes, I think I'll be using it all... to Wally World, Robin!

    Nail... Head... Kapow!!

I got goosebumps remembering that moment. Yup... I'll cop to my geek-y Kryptonite.
  4. Hooray for Doodles!!!

This is the first thread I've bothered to read on the topic, but I tend to agree (again) with Torak's statement waaay back towards the front. It implied there was no winning the debate on the word use. I'll continue to call things as I desire. The friends I've made in-game more than adequately back my abilities of cognative reasoning and good humor. The random exception won't break my heart, especially when they refuse to accept that no one's out to steal their lunch money.
  5. I picked up the term from my good buddy who got me playing this game in the first place. He plays the most pun-tacular characters around too. Perhaps I was doomed from the start. It was the first term for a character introduced to me in "short form" outside of PC from my GURPS days. Yeeesh... GURPS ate a signifigant hunk of my soul. Gamers of any kind are fraught with slang and acronyms is my point. I always figured it comes with the territory.

Cool. You were listed as replying to me, so I wasn't sure if I was being dressed down. Just checking, and what you're saying does make good sense.

Thanks!! Want some pie? Or a cookie? I got lotsa leftovers.

I have a friend that is a High School teacher, I have heard her complain that she receives Papers from student written in "texting short hand".

    [/ QUOTE ]

People seriously do this?!? I'd fail someone instantly for this. Perhaps give one warning, but after that...

That's disgusting, I mean really disgusting. Wow, I'm really bent out of shape about it

    [/ QUOTE ]

I hafta agree there. That's not good, considering I believe the children are our future.
  8. Use of any word in conversation is not copyright infringement. If it were "word of mouth" would be flushed down the toilet.
  9. The first time I saw someone type lmao I figured it was a reference to an Asian dictator. The earliest stages of my time in-game, I thought "Man... these people sure do adjust or rewrite their biographies alot." every time someone announced their afk's for restroom type reasons. Heh... afk... that had me wondering. Which Kennedy is that?

Oh jeez!!! ROFL really messed me up... I thought someone with dyslexia was making mention of one of my favorite muppets!!!
  10. lol... Oh crap.. lol's not a taboo is it?

    Yet?

Aha!!!! I have it. Is there a new character buzzword we might be able to agree on? Char, alt, and toon, I wouldn't mind junking if there was another 4-letter alternative.

    1) Toon is just not percieved as pleasant to many folks, no matter how well-intended.

    2) Char doesn't work for me. Less than half my characters are burn victims.

    3) Alt is a key on your keyboard.

So, to heck with them. I may enjoy that piece of slang, but perhaps if there was another more condusive. I would say there's the old fallback of PC (Player Character), but in a game run on a pc that's apt to get confusing. I heard someone say av (short for avatar) but... uh... Archvillains cornered that market. Beyond that, I'm open for suggestions if it fits my own verve.

    [/ QUOTE ]

PiP, yes it currently means Picture-in-Picture, but now it can also be an acronym for "Pixelated In-game Persona". Just like POS means Point-Of-Sale and Piece of Sh**.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Double-Aha!!! I like PiP. Reminds me of the pipboy in Fallout. A right fine rpg that was. I'm taking notes here.

Ooooo- If it stands for pixelated in-game persona, could ya call it PigP? Pig pee is infinitely more whimsical to me than "toon". "Hey there! Nice PigP!!" I kid.

    *Edited for ha-ha*

So I don't judge people based on the use of the word toon. I judge them by their overall typing capacity (hay u like my toon vs Hey, do you like my toon?) and in my experience, (which, fair enough, may be skewed) there is a higher usage of toon amongst otherwise lazy typists simply because it is shorter.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I will concede that I would type character more often if I wasn't using the ol' hunt and peck method. After that, I prefer toon to char, because to me toon has a more upbeat demeanor.

Note: In-game I would compliment you by typing out "Nice character/bio/concept, etc... I would not refer to your character as a toon. Though I may say "I enjoy this toon." in reference to myself, were you to inquire.

Is that more acceptable to folks? I believe referring to my concepts as such shouldn't be a problem to anyone.
  14. People who make assumptions about another's use of legitimate verbiage in a conversation are more suspect of a lack of maturity than those who use an established term. I agree with the whole "neener-neener" description there. Trying to assault another's maturity for lack of a good argument is also suspect. What a foolhardy assumption to make... "People who use the word "toon" are probably immature." People who don't and label people who do "immature" are premature. You rush to judge. You know nothing about people because you have a silly tick that causes you a deep lack of respect for others. Unfortunate.
  15. Though I'm pro-"toon" I will say that I've seen enough opinions on the matter to be a tad more sensitive in my word use around strangers. I expect my buddies to roll with it.

Heh... the new political parties... Pro and Anti-"toon".
  16. While I admit I contributed my perspective on this thread at length earlier, I'm surprised it went this far. It'll probably keep going as more folks notice _Castle_'s post on it in the Dev Digest. It's not the heaviest subject on the forums, but it certainly does seem to have begged response from hither and yon.
  17. How 'bout callin' em "Doodles"? I kid. Or do I?

If you don't like the word, fine. You're entitled, obviously. If you "correct" someone, who is not wrong for using a term used for most animated renderings by a varied group of Rpers (be it pen an' paper or console/computer gaming) because it offends you, however innocent and harmless a word... I consider that more than a little egotistical and innappropriate. You're not here to be someone else's judge or English teacher in those cases. This is a game.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Is anyone here trying to "correct" anyone else? I don't see anyone laying down Right and Wrong here. Unless you're saying that it's bad of me to point out that "toon" is mere slang. It is, isn't it?

I hope I'm not getting all authoritarian about it. I'm just calling it how I see it. If it's 'inappropriate' for me to do so, then this whole conversation is inappropriate in the first place. We're just talking about whether we like the term or not, basically. I agree, anyone who would get on a high horse about it is a yogurt of some kind.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm arguing more for your case than against it. The opening line in that post of mine was that slang is slang... nothin' wrong with it. The right or wrong comment is for those who go nuclear over the term. You've seen it as much as I have, I'd wager. If not, then pray you don't. It's kinda sad.

I never implied YOU in particular were trying to correct anyone else. I said I think it's innapropriate for one person to comment in a serious, negative demeanor on the use of established slang if a person's not intending it as a personal attack. Basically, no one person is the authority of in-game grammar.

I hope you get my meaning. There's a type of attitude out there to whom my comment directly applies. It rears it's ugly head on a frequent basis, although this is not the only fruitless argument it covets. No harm done man.

    I do like yogurt.
  19. Hahahaha!!!

Yes... "troller" is a conspicuous term in application.

The only thing that gets my goose is, that there's folks who say they don't care for the term, and I beg your pardon on this, and folks who argue passionately that "toon" is every bit as diminutive as those disgusting racial slurs. While they don't say it out aloud in those words, they certainly are reacting in the same way. Those folks are disturbing to me. I worry for their well-being. There is evidence of that train of thought in this in this very thread which is why I felt a desire to comment. While you may not count yourself as one, they are most certainly out there in full force.

Now I understand Rpers "getting into character" and that certain slangs detract from the RP experience. I was a PnP gamer waaaay back in the day. I get the harshing of "the fourth wall" or the construed disrespect of a person's intellectual properties. But I simply can't equate a form of slang that I openly use on the fly with an insult to someone else's character. If I was insulting characters they'd know.

Plus, I like the term "toon". It has a good-natured decorum to it. I certainly don't use the reference to encite ridiculous debates. And I've bounced out of any team that has lowered itself to do so. I like the term "character" too. "That Priesteater... he's a real character. Too bad he's a cannibal without a clue." "Char"... not big on that one, but feel free if you think it conveys what you need it to.

All I'm sayin' is take it down a notch when talking to whomever and don't let the little things get to you. You'll be a better person for it, and not just in your eyes. For every one of these petty differences in opinion that doesn't go nuclear, you deserve a cookie!!!
  20. At the same time, slang is in fact, slang. If a person decides to employ slang into their vocabulary (and it's not a racial slur... or a curse word around children) then why go off on it as though it were. In my opinion, saying "toon"'s diminutive to your character is a very dangerously oblivious statement of implied "predjudice" when there are real-life predjudices out there that are far less trivial.

As such, we should excercise the openness and sense of enjoyment to the game to keep it fun, instead of finding one more trivial predjudice to bring to the fore.

That being said, I use the terms I desire. If someone seems "offended" by said terminology I will respect that. However that person automatically smacks of being a shallow attention-monger to me. I give the benefit of the doubt, as it's not always the case at first. However, I have to say that 4 out of 5 of that type of person is certainly the more inconsiderate. After all, that person is the one who decided to berate or "correct" or infer another's social keen was insufficient in a game, right? Doesn't exactly seem like great company to me. I enjoy people of good humor and thicker skins. I'll point out that I do have a few very good friends in-game that are not fans of the word "toon"... still we spare ourselves the debate on any serious level because battling over harmless words is pretty much a melodramatic kind of social posturing that doesn't belong here.
  21. Wile E. Coyote's the man... er, the mammal!!

    Supergenius!!

Granted, he's a genius who hasn't learned that if he's got the credit to order all that crud from ACME to go after that dirty bird that he should probably order a pizza. I guess it's the principle of the thing, but c'mon... he'll never get Roadrunner to stop using the word "toon" if Roadrunner doesn't feel the need to change. It's not Roadrunner's issue... it's Wile E.'s.
  22. That would be because it IS close-minded and arrogant.

    Just sayin'.
  23. Yeeesh... You say potato, I say poe-tah-toe.

I've met people who are fun to play with no matter the term. If someone else is using a term like "toon" and you cringe as though it were a biggot's ignorant verbiage spewing from the hole under his nose... ya may need a break. Just sayin'. Seems to be too tiny a detail to be such a concern. I brought that up to a good friend of mine, when she blasted the use of the word. I'll use "toon" in reference to my characters on the fly... I never considered "chars"... it's just a preference. More often than not, if I'm speaking about someone else's, I type out "character" because of this touchy crowd.

I might add, I've noticed that the folks I play with that don't care what you call your "concept" are usually the folks I enjoy spending time with in this game. I'm not sayin' that *everybody* who hates the word "toon" is uptight, but in my experience about 85% of the folks I've seen damning the term are. Character concept is great an' all, but I offer that perhaps this isn't an issue to be addressed or "corrected" in or out of character... just ignored, if you don't care for it.
  24. Egg Chin: You will come out no MORE!!

Burton: What, Egg!?? Huh? What will come out no more!?

The greatest movie of all time...next to 'Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon', of course.
