Quote:I've played on other servers also. I spent a short time on Freedom (something I never want to repeat ever again) the sheer amount of leetspeak and unintelligable broadscasts was nearly deafening. Now imagine for a moment if you will, merging those people with the people on Virtue. You have to admit this will not lead to a positive outcome.Who is this "us" on Virtue you speak of? I play on Virtue. Yet I have not met you, unless in a PuG. How did I (and thousands of others you probably do not know) not ruin your community already? What features exist on Virtue that do not exist in the rest of the game? Where do you roleplay? Do you really think Virtue is that different from the other servers, because take it from someone who plays on multiple servers, it is not different.
Quote:Community in an MMO is probably the most precious things we have. I was never a big fan of video games, but have played this one for nearly five years. That is all because of community. I want to go serverless to promote community building, but need to understand the potential pitfalls and hopeful solutions in order to talk about the topic honestly. -
The short of it is, I don't agree if that's the approach they intend to take. SDragon above layed it all out fairly well, community-issues aside.
When this game was formed, Virtue was the "unofficial RP server" (because Cryptic didn't want to name an official one, because it would simply attract griefers, and they weren't willing to commit the specialized staff it would take to deal with and maintain a "real" RP only server. OK, I undestand that. But it's always been an unspoken, unwritten rule that Virtue IS the RP server for CoH, if they want to go to a Serverless archetecture, and leave us out of it (since the rest of the populations of the servers except Freedom MIGHT actually equal the Virtue population) that'd be fine with me. Or if if the individual servers could vote on their inclusion/exclusion, that'd also be fair. The short answer is, that was the expectation when Virtue was around, and if you go to Virtue, you should be prepared to RP, if not, it's probably not the server for you. Sticking around and arguing over an issue where we philosophically differ is only going to turn an otherwise productive thread into flamebait, and make it much longer than it is already. Until I actually see evidence of this sort of proceedure occuring, I'm fine. Once I do, I'll take actions as I see appropriate. Beyond that, I don't see much to discuss about it.
Anyway, back on topic, is test DOWN or is it just reporting no login server for those of us not in? I would assume it would respond with the customary ACCOUNTNAME is not allowed on this server. Reason: closed beta testing. -
Nope. But starting your reply like that is certainly going to help me to listen to you, yup. *nods sagely*
Quote:Thousands (tens of thousands, maybe) of people not in your little clique or community already play on Pinnacle and Virtue. Your community is safe, as long as you can maintain your global channels, your forum sections, and your friends lists.
Quote:I play on many servers right now and would love nothing more than to be able to play any of my characters I wish to play with any of the characters people in my community may want to play. Instead, my community is occasionally fractured, because I want to play a character on Pinnacle, while 3 others want to play characters on Guardian, while 2 others want to play characters on Liberty. Sure, we often capitulate and join up on the same server, but how often is at least one of us not playing the character we really want to play, because it is on the "wrong" server?
Quote:I encourage your desire to protect your community. I feel the same. I see my community suffering because of the Server system. I know a serverless system would only strengthen my community, because I have often seen a bunch of us on and chatting with each other, but unable to actually play together, because we are on different servers. It is fun to chat with each other. It is more fun to chat and play together.
NC has a chance to maintain something unique, and something to differentiate it from "the other game" besides just being there first, and better. Hopefully they'll see that and stick to it.
I applaud your ability to argue, I disagree, and should I see evidence to actually support the gaming going serverless, I'll start a massive petition campaign to get it changed, that's my right as a citizen of the community. it's also within the Dev/company's rights to ignore that, and then within my rights to go elsewhere. There'a a LOT of games on the horizon, and at least 2-3 of them are comic book Superhero games... -
This is a good point, and if GR has any of the same problems that DXP tends to have, that would cause some fairly nasty launch issues..I'm just worried it may be for some other reasons...
-
Which does make one wonder why they'd need a queue system at all, given that only 2 of the servers are ever busy enough to need one (Virtue and Freedom) and then really only during DXP weekend, which yes, might fix the problems we had during the past DXP weekend. Let's just hope it doesn't lead to discussion of a massive serverless/mega-server environment, because..well it would suck. Some of us like the specfic makeup (more or less) of the server we're on...
-
It was a Cl-Open beta.
*giggles*
Hi Djeannie! Welcome back! -
I sort of suspected this issue would finally lock out the Character Creator from being open. Why? because 3/4ths of the point of this issue IS the new character creator. It might as well be open beta if you're going to let everyone play with it. It's good to see I'm rarely surprised anymore, I had prepared myself for this up front, so I'm not disappointed.
-
Quote:CoH does that, and I might as well just go play CO who is already using a stupid "mega-server" environment. It destroys the RP communites of Virtue and pennicle by doing that. If they do, I might as well go play another game that destroyed its RP community before launch, heck at least it looks better. You may call me a dreamer, but I see it as the first step towards a serverless environment. I know, wild hope, but sometimes hope is what keeps us going.
That would be the dumbest thing NC wound ever have done.
Full stop. -
Quote:Honestly, I don't think I can give split views on this.
What I think so far...
- Having your forum login = game login: Bad!
- Not being able to view all posts in one go (i.e. View all option): Not good. I used that option quite a lot.
Those. Also, there's no language filter, meaning if someone accidently posts a French or German thread in the English sections (or the other way around) it'll show up in searches anyway. I know VB can do it, but it's not implimented. Also, having to click "English" is annoying. I'd like an option in the User CP to specifically default everything to English (or a list of languages I speak) and only show results within them.
between that and the stuff I quoted, I can't say I'm entirely thrilled with the new boards. It's nicer than the old ones, but that's like saying MMOs are nicer than MUDs... -

So I dual booted vista.... And on a crap shoot I did downgrade to the last official win7 release (7100) and it **looks** like I'm golden now... So yeah. Just a heads up to devs (assuming they ever read this) that theres DOOOOooooOOOOM on the herizon... DOOOOOOooooooOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[/ QUOTE ]
Honestly,
Unlikely.
There's a reason MS tells you not to install those later "leaked" builds, actually there are a few:
1) MS releases them to specific partners to solve/test specific issues with specific hardware, and they aren't tested as strictly and completely as the RC 7100 build.
2) There's no "official" way to get it except torrenting, which leads to 3:
3) NEVER torrent an OPERATING SYSTEM, there's just too much potential for damage, spyware, or hacked copies for it to be a reliable judge of performance.
If you're going to test W7 with things, use the MS recommended release. 7 is only 3 months and 18 days away. :P
Edited:
For the record I myself am using W7 RC 7100 (64-bit) as my primary OS right now (since my XP 64 install finally hosed itself after 3 years). And what was my "test" rig, is right now my primary.
I cannot use the 186.18 drivers with CoH (it goes black right at the title screen, music still plays and can type in my password (blind) and log in, the game is "running" but has no graphics. The 185.85 drivers work like a charm, and give me about a 10-15fps boost over the equivalent in XP-64 (I have never used Vista except on a friend's laptop). I did not try the 186.08 (betas) but I was tempted to.
All in all, Windows 7 rocks, I've never been able to say that about an OS before. -

[ QUOTE ]
Attacks or really any click power is just one quick burst of your end going down that comes right back afterwards. (some quicker than others) Toggles CONSTANTLY drain your END for as long as they are active and the drain rate tends to be faster than the recovery. (it would have to be really otherwise what's the point of useing the endurance if it comes back faster than you're useing it.)"
[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
If attacks were worse on END than toggles were then leaveing them on and not attacking should bring back END fairly quickly but no, END would still drain untill you no longer had the nessisary endurance to keep the toggles on. At which point once they droped I would continue attacking again.
Now turning them off myself END would regain a little bit while I was in the process of turning everthing off and I'd go right back to attacking.
You know which method worked better for regaining END, turning off the stupid toggles.
[/ QUOTE ]
Now, getting back to the point of toggle end use versus attack end use, let's use JUST Temp invuln from the Invulnerability set, it costs .26 end per second (which powers like focused fighting, and many other "base" tanker/scrapper toggles have the same cost). Which is just a hair over a quarter of a point of end per second. Which means to burn 1 point of end, it takes 4 seconds approximately.
Looking at the lowest level, cheapest attack from "Martial Arts" "Thunder Kick", it costs 4.37 end, and the cast time (time the power takes) is .83 seconds (a bit over 3/4ths of a second). For a typical toggle like TI to burn that much endurance would take 16.8 seconds (which is 20.24 times longer than Thunder Kick to burn as much end, which means the toggle is 20.24 times more efficient than thunder kick is, which means 'standing there and taking it" will actually raise your end more quickly.
It's also important to remember endurance recovers at the same rate for attacks and toggles, it just might feel differently.
Another example, using the most expensive attack in the MA set, Dragon's Tail. It costs 13.5 end and casts in 1.5 seconds. It would take TI (or an equivalent toggle) 51.9 seconds, (which is almost a full minute) to burn the same amount of endurance. That's 34.6 times longer than just casting Dragon's Tail for the toggle to use up the same amount of endurance.
I know that I used to feel the same way with my Tank. Trust me though, it's just a feeling, and sense of perception, it's not the reality of how the game works, at low levels, especially with the low level accuracy boosts, the first things you should do, are add end reducers to all your attacks. Add Mitigation to the toggles first. As you level up, shift to less and swap one out, since DOs are 2x more than TOs, and the same happens again when you shift to SOs (I won't even bring IOs into this discussion, nor the specifics of building).
The short answer is, YES, by all means, make sure your toggles get some end reduction (1, maybe 2, depending on the toggle--again, ignoring big spenders like Focused Accuracy, and Defender toggles like Radiation Infection and Enervating Field) but, attacks drain far more endurance than toggles in less time. This is only using 1 toggle and 1 attack for reference. This only magnifies when taking entire chains of attacks and full (3) sets of toggles into account.
If I ever ran into a scrapper, stalker, or tank who refused to use their toggles on the basis of end conservation (and not based on an RP concept or something) the first things I would do is ask how long they'd been playing the game, if they knew what stamina was, and if they were using endurance reductions in their attacks; and then point them toward one of the many helpful building guides here on the forums. If that didn't work, I certainly wouldn't team with them, as they'd be near useless to my team. -
[ QUOTE ]
the end drain from your attacks is nothing compaired to your toggles.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, not really. Per capita (especially at low levels) you lose FAR more end to attacks than you EVER do to toggles (unless you're running literally 6-8-10 toggles, and I know of very few builds that past 6, or 8 in the absolute extreme) note that I'm excepting crap like Focused Accuracy, and a couple more of the absolutely obscenely expensive toggles. But your typical Tanker/Scrapper/Stalker/Blaster/Defender (in Epics) toggles aren't really all that expensive when you have 3-4 of them, compared to your attacks.
At low levels especially slot all your attacks for at least 1 (or 2 for huge attacks on the level of KO Blow) end reduction(s) before you think of adding them for toggles.
That's contrary to the way we used to think back in the old days, but at least in my experiences lately, and looking at stuff like mids, that's mostly true these days. -

[/ QUOTE ]
Originally, I was thinking yes, but given some comments Posi made about merging the markets in he Interview on the EU forums near the end of last month, I'm guessing there won't be BM/WW access from Praetoria (or any kind of market there) which actually kind of makes sense if you think about it... -

[/ QUOTE ]
It's actually both. It's an expansion, and it's Issue 16. (Mostly supposed since the newsletter unsubscribe link from the GR website says "Issue 16 Unsubscribe".
So it's both an expansion, AND Issue 16. Just like CoV was both an Expansion, AND Issue 6. -
[ QUOTE ]
This should be a very interesting turn of events:
Side switching should give a new player access to every mission/arc available to any toon; whether it's 1 to 50 or 50 to 1 (via Ouros). Safeguards, Mayhems, TFs, Trials, STFs, etc.
They should, in theory, have access to every badge and/or accolade - they better work out the kinks on those that are represented on both sides.
They'll be able to play both sides of the PvP equation.
Have access to all maps.
In theory, have access to all Patron/Epics.
In theory, be able to unlock both EATs with any archetype (perhaps even with one toon).
Combined with Ouro and MA; the demand for more content has pretty much been filled (at least for a time)
So once content is a minimal issue and the issue of access being dealt with in a big fashion, what's the next big thing?
[/ QUOTE ]
See, but you're forgetting the morality meter is likely going to lock most of this at any ONE time. I also doubt you'll get "full" access to both sides using Oroborous, (if you did, I'd fully expect the act of doing Villainous or Heroic content in O to shift your morality meter as well, and eventually lock you out of one side) (might be a good excuse to bridge the Oroborous zones into a zone for both sides). We don't know how they'll handle Patron/Epic/APP pools yet. You'll have access to most all the badges, except that afaik most of the accolades have a "copy" of the same one on the opposite side, I suspect those badges would simply "flip" to their opposite side equivalents ("Freedom Phalanx Reserve becomes "Freedom Phalanx Fallen" "Servant of Recluse" becomes "Former Servant of Recluse" etc. "Villain" becomes "Reformed" etc. or vice-versa. I doubt you'd have access to "ALL" badges on "ALL" sides "ALL" at once, since...well that would be sort of ridiculous. The specific badges you had would mark your progress as a character from one side to the other. Let's say you were a villain from 1-25, and then became a Hero from 26-50. You'd have a handful of Villain badges (whatever you earned up to 25) and then when you switch, some of those will "flip" to their Heroic equivalents and some will stay, and then you'll begin picking up Hero badges from then on. Someone looking at your badge list could probably "tell" at what point you changed, and shifted away from you old life, to your new one. My guess is something like that is what the Devs are aiming for. Given Posi's recent post and actions taken regarding the "Villain/Reformed" badge issues, I think he's thinking along similar lines as well.
Again, the key is, you'll likely never have access to everything all at once you'll have to pick and choose from time to time. The only possible exception I could see is a "Spy" or "Double Agent" or someone sitting firmly in the center of the morality meter the entire time (which I expect to be an extremely hard proposition to do). Plus, if it starts getting used to massively "powergame" or "exploit" the original dev intent to a massive degree (i.e. MA Farming). I'm sure things will be changed to better fit the plans intended. -
[ QUOTE ]
IMO I highly doubt we will see CoV born characters running through CoH - AP as heroes, I would think the only side switching is within the alternate universe and once you switch back to the real world CoH/CoV your alignment goes to what you originally picked. This might also mean a minimum level requirement (maybe level 4) to enter CoX/GR forcing you to pick Hero or Villain in the original universe.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Reading the press release makes it extremly clear that "villains will be able to cross over to Paragon City, and Heroes will be able to explore the Rogue Isles" I don't see how it can be any clearer than this. -

If this has already been asked I apologize. Is the elvel cap being bumped up, like to 60?
[/ QUOTE ]
That hasn't been announced, and is highly unlikely given past statements by the devs.
[/ QUOTE ]
I wonder sometimes, everytime this question is asked, if an angel doesn't die a horrible death somewhere?
I don't know if it's just me or not, but everytime someone asks about raising the level cap, I'm filled with this unreasoning anger and hatred, and it makes me want to "Go Rogue". I'm not sure if it's a symptom of the way game developers have, over the years conditioned MMO players to expect the level caps of every game to rise with the release of new expansions, or what. It seems like half of them can't find creative solutions to the end-game problems of their games (probably because they didn't think long enough about what they were going to do when they got there, and just ran up against the wall one day) besides just raising the level cap, adding some powers, putting the players back on the treadmill, and calling it a day.
Take Age of Conan for example, while I like the general idea of the game, and the first 20 or so level are awesome, it becomes quickly apparent that no one thought about what to do after that, except some vague stuff; and they were stupid enough to launch with their level cap at EIGHTY (I can just see them thinking "well heck, WoW already goes up to 70, let's just start at EIGHTY, that'll show 'em!") without actually thinking about having to put CONTENT in those levels.
All of this just makes me happy CoH has been done the way it has, that we continue to get content, but don't have to deal with a constantly raising bar invalidating half of what we do.
Thank you Devs. -

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but it looks like this game is heading toward another lawsuit.
Marvel Comics has the name Tyrant registered as a trasemark and copyright (which amzes me since CoH claims to hold the TM; which is impossible since Marvel has had Tyrant for years).
Before they even consider the release of this game update, they better strongly consider changing some things...because Marvel doesn't even care if they win a lawsuit...they'll sue just to do damage...and in this case they could possibly win.
http://www.marvel.com/universe/Tyrant
[/ QUOTE ]
If there was going to be an issue with Tyrant, it would've been handled a LONG time ago, Tyrant's been in the game since, I believe pre Issue 1. If there was a problem, it was probably settled as part of the previous Marvel/Cryptic lawsuit. I doubt it'll make a difference. Plus, it's a concept. DC may own the copyrights to the character "Terra" who looks like she does, has her powers, etc. but Marvel could just as easily have a totally different "Terra" because "Terra" is a generic word that means "Earth", and you can't copyright a generic word. No more than you can hold a copyright on the word "Tyrant". You can however hold the trademark on that particular VERSION of Tyrant. Marvel has theirs, CoH has theirs. -

I have a question in regards to SG Bases. Are supergroups going to become non-alignment or will my hero lose his base access when he becomes evil?
And if SG Bases become neutral will I be able to invite villains to my SG and build another TP room for their zones only accessable if you have a villain alignment?
Come to think of it. Praetoria will also probably have TP zones so I will need a room for that as well.
Guess I better start saving prestige up to upgrade.
[/ QUOTE ]
[Speculation] I would assume it might be possible for a Super-Leader to set the "morality" of his SG. "Heroic" "Villainous" "Neutral" and then define if it'll accept "members" of differing alignments. (I.e. a Neutral SG might be able to accept all alignments, but it would probably be the only one who could, while Heroic SGs could accept Heroic and Neutral and Villainous SGs could accept Neutral and Villainous, but only if the SL enabled the other alignments). Why does everyone read that, and assume it says "level 60" it says "VIRTUAL Level 60" CoX is not raising its level cap. -
[ QUOTE ]
Not sure if this has been asked, but will the new expansion be "serverless"?
[/ QUOTE ]
Would be hard for the new expansion to be "serverless" since the game is server-based. It's not like it's a "new" game, so unless they choose to make CoH server-less (please don't), then no. -
[ QUOTE ]
While I agree that I am afraid they will NOT be raising the level cap with this expansion, I do however believe that there will be "something" new for level 50 toons to do and achieve.
[/ QUOTE ]
Right, there'll be TONS for 50s to do. If you actually count all the content from 41-50 (as you can't outlevel anything once you pass 41). There's a TON of 50 content, even NOW, (not to mention what GR will likely add). This isn't even counting Flashbacking. -
[ QUOTE ]
Does anyone else suspect that they will be raising the level cap for this? I hope so! I'm certain there are lots of players that want their level 50 characters to cross to the other side.
[/ QUOTE ]
Been done to death, covered a bunch of times, no the level cap will not raise. Castle covered this a while back, there'd be no reason to do it. He basically said "never say never, but basically never" it's PROBABLY safe to say CoX will NEVER raise it's level cap.
