When I first started working on COH (the comic book, back during the launch of Villains), Ghost Widow is the first signature character that really grabbed my attention as well. She has a stark, iconic look that's simultaneously mysterious, a little scary, and beautiful, and like you guys, she's always been a favorite of mine.
Alex Ross is known for his simple, spare approach to costuming, and he often limits his designs to just 2-3 colors on purpose. Ghost Widow, to me, feels like something Alex Ross would've designed. That's the inspiration I take away from that character. -
Thank you.
What I'd like to get out of this is a better idea of what the playerbase responds to when it comes to the big personalities in the COH universe. As we develop new characters, I'll keep all of your comments in mind.

Hey, folks. It's your friendly-neighborhood concept artist Noble Savage here, and I was curious about something. Looking at all of the game's Signature Characters in particular (like the Freedom Phalanx from COH, the Arachnos patrons from COV, and the Praetors from GR), which are your favorites from a visual standpoint? Who really 'clicks' with you? Who looks the coolest/most intriguing/scariest, etc? Which costumes are the best fit for the particular character's story? Feel free to look at GMs, AVs, and even enemy group bosses while you're at it, but I'm curious which boss-level and higher NPC costumes really capture your attention and why.
Not really looking for player costume requests in this thread (please put those in All Things Art); rather, I'd like to know which characters make the game come alive for you visually.
Thanks,

The problem with an ice slide is that it's intimately and definititively linked to Iceman. And off the top of my head, there's no clear way to 'make it our own' and maintain the original concept. Not exactly the lowest hanging fruit, but I never say never.

You're more than welcome to post your thoughts on Design issues, and I'm sure other devs will read 'em, but that's not my area of focus. I'm going to zero in on the artistic inspiration side of things.

That's actually a lot easier/more feasible than broomsticks, etc. If the stance animations remain the same, all we'd really have to add would be new models to go beneath the feet. Should be very doable, so please let us know what would be your top requests for alternate flying devices.

Quote:Now that is an awesome thought. I LOVE the idea of adding new travel powers as often as possible for a couple of reasons: a) players clearly love 'em and b) it diversifies the big picture vista of the city at any given moment. With new additions like Beast Run, Rocketboard, and the energy contrails produced by the Celestial Armor wings, we're really starting to see a lot of color and variety in the way heroes and villains travel. To me, that's exactly what a City of Heroes should look like, and the more the merrier. Now that you have the tech for that, can you make a Broomstick power?
So yeah, broomstick would be killer. And by the way, it's not that there wasn't tech to support Rocketboard; rather, animation time was the major consideration. Would be very curious to ask the animators about the possibility of broomsticks now... -
Quote:At this point, I think the topic's starting to shift into future request territory. Could you guys please post items like that in All Things Art? Thanks! And another thing...
Would it be possible to somehow split hair and hats from each other, so that they can be selected individually?
Yes, I know that it would mean that you would have to rebuild all hat models AND add some magic tech to somehow remove part of the hair model from the renderer.
But... please? -
Totally agree with you. Would certainly love to see that feature at some point. But like I said, the challenge is in figuring out how to do it without spending all our collective resources for months. We'll keep looking into it.

Quote:That clip's exactly what I think of when I see the word "hoverboard." We decided to concept ours with a little less pink and a little less Mattel branding...and a little more ramjet.
-
Quote:If it merely floated a short distance above the ground, we would've called it a Hoverboard (in fact, that's exactly what we've been calling it around the office for quite some time). But because you'll have full multi-directional flight with this item, the name was revised to the more descriptive and accurate "Rocketboard."Yeah that's it. They called it a rocket board in the magazine, but it's more like a hoverboard.
Wait 'til you see a true demonstration of this thing. It's pretty slick. -
Quote:Plus every glove texture in the game. This topic comes up from time to time, and we'd certainly love to do it. But I think it's going to take some kind of tech wizardry to make an undertaking like this feasible. If attempted right now, this one task would cost thousands of man-hours and nullify all other animation and character projects for months. Given the dozens and dozens of other cool things we could make for you instead during the same amount of time, you can see why it's not the best investment.the major hold up with adding fingers is the need to redo all the animations
Then again, Ultramode happened, so it wouldn't be the first time we did a large-scale cosmetic upgrade. Never say never, I suppose. -

Quote:It's from TNG, incidently, and features Riker prominently, but I couldn't say what season.I'm always reminded of a Star Trek musical instrument which came from a highly advanced alien race. It didn't have any actual input, but the player was instead supposed to just hold the device and think about music. The machine would take what's in their mind and compose it into a completed end product. I forget which episode that's from, or even which series, ...

Diggin' it!
Nice choice on the music.

One of the core values underpining COH is customization, and we always strive to give you guys new options as often as possible--to put more toys in the toybox, as it were. So while we'll never forget about traditional tights and cape options, we definitely want to enable players to create whatever their imaginations can conjure up. Maybe you'd like to create a Western-, Scifi-, Fantasy-, Steampunk-, Pirate-, or Barbarian- themed superhero? Our goal is to cover ALL the possibilities as fully as possible.
Comic characters come in all sorts of genre flavors after all (look at Jonah Hex, Thor, Conan, Lady Mechanika, Swamp Thing, etc.), and we love the notion of a COH universe where literally anything is possible.
Fans looking for new tights options might want to check out the upcoming Defender, CoT, and Celestial sets. All of these offer a fairly plain 'underlayer' for you to build on and that should mix and match more easily with other sets.
Cheers,
NS
