Quote:There used to be someone of that name that visited the Screenshots & Fan Creations forums...
Haven't seen him for a while... figured that maybe he was a figment of our imagination...
But really, Congratulation David it's well deserved.
Yup--now you know what happened. There I was, busily updating my art thread, when things suddenly got VERY busy. Praetoria's a big place, so I hope you don't mind that I've redirected most of my art mojo towards making it as awesome and beautiful as I can. -

Looking forward to it. Seeya there!

Many moons ago, during the COV launch, I went on a press tour with the COH crew that included stops in Pennsylvania and New York. Had a great time, and I'm so glad we'll get the chance to visit the East Coast again next month. Really looking forward to the show and to seeing you guys at the Meet n' Greet. We've got so much juicy new stuff to share with you guys, and it kills me that I have to wait 'til the end of March to say anything else on the topic.
Anyway, see you then! -
Quote:Tons of GOING ROGUE goodness to come, guys. Stay tuned--this is just the tip of the iceberg...A thousand thanks, War Witch. This is EXACTLY what players like me and Perfect_Pain and many others have been asking for. Not a full reveal, just start doling out little goodies for us to oooh and aahhh over, and obsessively discuss here in the forums.
If you good folks could deliver something equivalent to this 2-4 times a month, the player base will be kept buzzing and excited. -
Quote:Whenever I'm at a convention, I'm happy to draw these for you guys completely gratis. It's just something I like to do, and that's one of the rare instances when I've got the time to do them. This is awesome as usual. Say you were taking commissions, how much would one of these busts cost outside a convention? I've never been able to go to one, as much as I'd want to.
These days, there's not a lot of time for commissions outside of cons unfortunately, but since you asked about pricing: I used to charge $10-20 at conventions when I was working my own booth in Artists' Alley. As time went on and people asked for more and more elaborate pieces (full figure, multiple figures, large paper), the price scaled to a max of $100, but generally the average sketch stayed right in that $10-20 sweet spot. Whenever I did a commission at home and then mailed it to a client, I'd usually draw a half figure or something extra and call it $40 (plus shipping).
A lot of professional friends suggested that I might be undercharging, but I don't think so. I was trying to build a name in the comic industry, and I figured that reasonably-priced color sketches would be a way to stand out in the crowd. -
Been really busy, but here're a couple more at last!

Sweet, man. Thanks for setting that up. Did we ever figure out a simple way to keep the content COH related? (Wouldn't want to clutter up the page with all my other junk.

Quote:Oh, don't worry. It's comin'.Dave.
I am deeply hurt, and scared emotionally in that not only did you not look into my bacon link, but you also have not posted the commission you did for me of Viceroyalty waaaaayyyy back in 05(?) I think it was. Granted it's not art done at one of the conventions but it's a great piece.
SasheemPlan is to start a separate 'David's Art Thread' for the more polished art (like Viceroyalty). But I figured I'd finish off the sketches first, and there're about 15 more of those at least with more trickling in every week.
Been a little slow with the uploads this week, thanks to a freelance thing I'm wrapping up now.
Anyway, stay tuned! -
Quote:Even Nightseye can't beat twins. I still remember David making that one. I had to hop back and front from the Omega Taskforce Challenge I was in.
That was a cool weekend in Birmhinham, UK.
hmm.. there was a nother done that day for me. if you dont have the scan I can make one.
I think I've got all the art from that event, and eventually I'll get them all up on this thread, but at the moment I'm quite busy with work and baby care duties. Coming soon though, I promise! -
Quote:Exactly. The female equivalent, to me, is the personality quotient I mentioned over on the other thread. Hughes does that better than anyone, and it gives his women that all-important lifelike quality.Which should be equally important for the female characters, right?
A lot of pro comic artists are actually pretty bad at this. Taking any random comic off the shelves, you tend to see a lot of flat expressions and repeated paste-on faces. -
For me, the best male characters--from a comic book standpoint at any rate--are drawn by artists who've learned how to portray two key things:
1. chiseled anatomy that's accurate, if exaggerated
2. a certain gravitas, conveying strength and inner depth
So for me, the two artists who best exemplify these qualities would be Dale Keown and Joe Madureira. Their guys just ooze 'awesome'. Hulk's never looked as tough or as cool as when Keown drew him, and Mad's guys just seem larger than life, virtually bursting off the printed page.
I find that most other artists' portrayals of guys just look wimpy in comparison when you stack them up against these two, regardless of how well they might be drawn. Silvestri gets points for the best Johnny Depp-type 'pretty' boys, Jim Lee's characters always exude strength and cool, and Alex Ross has a lock on drawing superheroes that look real, but when you get right down to it, Keown and Mad are the two that make me the most jealous. -
Can't believe I forgot to mention J. Scoot Campbell. I've got his art hanging all around me as I type this, yet it slipped my mind until now.
Dude has a cottage industry based on drawing hot chicks. He knows a thing or two. -
Quote:I'd be happy to list my personal favorite artists who specialize in drawing the male figure. Someone start the thread, and we'll get that conversation started.I don't suppose there are any red names willing to speak up in praise/defense of the male art form? Or should we keep the context purely sexist?

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday! Time for more sketches:
Retouched the last one to bring the proportions up to date. -
I like all the artists you've cited--quite a bit actually, but to me they're just not in the same league when it comes to drawing women. Again, it's very subjective, but none of these guys communicate the same level of personality, storytelling, or sheer sexiness that I see in a Hughes or Manara pinup. For me, those characters seem to live and breathe, whereas lesser artists rely on bland, expressionless faces and stock poses meant to show off T and A. There's a lot more to a great pinup than that, which is why I have to give Hughes and co. the edge.
-
Thanks for posting those. This guy basically perfected the modern pinup--any artist trying to draw the female form should really study him carefully. Taschen Publishing released an AWESOME hardcover of Elvgren's work a while back, and it's not hard to track down. Well worth the $50 or whatever they're asking for it.

Love that guy's work.
Legendary artist without a doubt, but not really known for drawing hot babes. On the other hand, he draws the smoothest, most free-flowing action scenes I've ever seen and has a real knack for posing figures in a natural, effortless manner.
Don't get me wrong--his women are certainly attractive, but I think we're trying to identify the artists whose renditions of women make you drool and howl at the moon, so to speak. Not just pretty but va-va-voom sexy.
I forgot one on my previous list: Milo Manara is a European artist who definitely belongs in the top 5. -
Quote:Adam Hughes, to me, is the greatest pinup artist of the modern era, and second only to Gil Elvgren in the all-time rankings of artistic portrayals of beautiful fantasy women. He's certainly one of my biggest influences, and when I had the chance to do the cover for Issue 18, that's definitely the sort of material I had in mind--equal parts sexy and fun.one of the things I was most impressed with, during the time when we got issues of the city of heros comics mailed to us.. is the great amount of perfect err... female assets drawn within...
what is your favorate city of heros comic what features such great assets .. and how dose it compare to another artist work that also is known for great portrayals of the same subject matter?..
(And yeah, that's Pocket D btw--if you look closely, you can pick out DJ Zero in the crowd)
Frank Cho and Dave Stevens are right up there as well, along with newer guys like Stanley Lau, Chester Ocampo, and Warren Louw. Obviously, it's quite difficult to draw beautiful women and a very specialized skill at that, so there just aren't a lot of artists operating at that top tier level.
This is pretty subjective, eye-of-the-beholder stuff of course, but 2 million+ pageviews each on DeviantArt seem to confirm a certain level of popularity.
