Alright, that explains what's going on then, thanks!
If that is the case, then no problem. I'll get my slots back when I re-sub VIP. I was scared there for a moment, though. I'm glad it's just a free service thing and not something that will affect me once I am a VIP. -
I've kept an active account for years. Now, I moved to a new house and my "VIP" lapsed during the time that I didn't have internet access for several months, during which time the Freedom update has come.
Now when I sign on, the first thing I see is that all my character slots have been locked and I am only allowed to unlock three of them. It looks as though these slots must be purchased beyond 3, but I need some clarification here, because this is honestly scaring me.
Now, if the limited slots have something to do with no longer being VIP, then I can get around that, because I planned to stay VIP anyways, however, if I'm to be told that I must re-purchase character slots which I *already own*, that is, my slots have been seized to be re-sold to me, that would be just too much for me to abide. That's some straight up dirty business.
I really hope this is some kind of a bug or something and will be fixed. Before I resub for VIP, I need to know whether or not I'm going to have to re-purchase all of my formerly owned character slots even as a VIP or not. I've already made many characters on almost every server, I've already put those slots to use, and if I am intentionally expected to buy back those slots and characters after they have been seized from my possession, I'll feel done so dirty I won't be able to stick around. Besides, how am I supposed to trust in anything I obtain if it can be at any time taken away from me to be re-sold to me?
Gods I really hope this is just a bug or something. If anyone could shed some light on this issue, it would give my restless mind some peace, even if it's not the news I want to hear. I'm really confused and worried about the way this looks, but I'd like to think they wouldn't deliberately do something like this, especially when I've remained loyally active even through times when I could barely afford food, or times in which I couldn't even access the game due to computer issues.
I'll keep an eye out and hopefully someone can explain to me what is going on. Thanks in advance! -
No actually after sending some diagnostics in to support it seems I don't have SP3 installed, which is awfully curious considering I clicked it in the updater, and told it to install. I remember it starting, but apparently it didn't follow through. No idea why.
At any rate I'm running it now, had to go download it as a stand-alone installer and now I'm going to try that. I'll report back with my findings. Hopefully it works.
Update: After manually downloading and installing SP3, the problem has resolved! Thanks guys! Maybe its something to look out for. I told my machine to install SP3, and for some odd reason, it didn't follow through with the command. I *thought* I was updated, but I wasn't, support had to point that out to me haha. Anyways, all better now! -
I don't know if the original poster's issue was resolved by upgrading to SP3, however, I'm suffering from the same problem and the same method hasn't fixed my problem. Some googling later and I realized that many people have this problem with many games. Often, the problem IS fixed by upping to SP3, but sometimes its not.
In my case, as of the patch this morning that it updated, I am no longer able to access the game because of this silly error. I updated to service pack 3, and rebooted. The problem remains persistent. I've done scan disk for errors and such, no luck. I'm looking into other avenues as well, but so far I haven't gotten lucky.
If there are any additional fixes that anyone might suggest or any other insights that might help me overcome this problem, I'm sure myself along with everyone else experiencing this issue now and in the future will appreciate it. While waiting for suggestions here or from support, I'm also trying to troubleshoot it as best I can with my own limited computer comprehension. My next best idea so far is to "repair" directx9 which seemed to work for several other people on another game forum, but I can't seem to figure out how to "repair" direct x when opening the program to install/repair it does neither, it simply "reads that I already have direct x" and skips straight to finish, giving me NO options.
At any rate, if I manage to solve my problem or find a solution elsewhere, I'll post here so that others who find their way here to solve this issue might benefit. If anyone has any help they can offer, I'm all ears!
Thanks a bunch!
Update: Okay, I'm at a freaking loss. That didn't work either. All I know is, I can no longer play city of heroes, and I still have months of purchased time that will just go to waste. Man I'm so frustrated. Why can't my computer ever work right? -
I remember HAVING the problem in beta, but I assumed it was isolated to the beta server, that the store had been disabled there for whatever reason. The copy tool was also down at the same time, so I figured there was a connection. Maybe it's just a buncha bugs that need a good hosing down with a can of raid!

Quote:Ah well, hopefully it will be fixed for good this time! It's true I've had issues with this bug before, though, so I'm sure this has only bumped it up on the priority list anyways. I have 14-15 slots on every server, so it's kind of unavoidable for me! lolAgreed. The thing is... This has been the #1 recurring issue for months or years now, so far as I can tell. It affects all players who have more than 12 characters on a server, and it has been affecting them all along, with dozens of reports.
It's not new. It's not surprising. This isn't a last-minute bug that somehow escaped testing; this is them getting bitten by the decision to just ignore a well-known problem instead of fixing it.
And believe me, having had this happen to my own releases, I'm familiar with the experience. -
Servers going down for fixes. Imagine that!

I'm pretty frustrated, too. It's my last day off for the next week, and I have like 150 characters to wade through, sort, redesign, recreate, transfer, etc. I'm expecting that the devs will extend the transfer time frame to compensate for whatever chunk of time is lost to these complications. Obviously, it would screw a lot of people out of their chance to get their transfers done if they didn't, I think.
Losing character names is by far the worst part of this. Being isolated or unable to reach the new content for a day or two is not a big deal. Once this is fixed, you'll be right in there and there's no permanent damage. My heart goes out mainly to those who are losing character names over this. They are probably the most (justifiably) angry about this.
However, people, please understand that the developers put forth a great deal of time and energy and creativity into creating this new content so that it could be enjoyed, and that there is absolutely nothing intentional about this setback. This doesn't need to be turned into a soap opera stab-in-the-back scenario, or compared to some con artist' ploy. The developers obviously have *every* reason to want their players happy. Remember, for you, this is a game, but for them, this is their livelihood.
After all that has been put into GR, I can only imagine how they must feel right now, when they were anticipating releasing the content they've worked so hard on to the public, and have run into complications resulting in mobs of angry players instead. Please trust and understand that this issue is not something they cooked up together to be funny. The developers want the players to enjoy the content, and if there are complications, you should trust that they are doing whatever they can to fix it ASAP. Happy players is how the game makes money and continues to grow.
It seems unreasonable to suggest that they don't care or that they are up to no good. This has to be really crappy for them, too. It certainly sucks for me, but I'm not going to join the flame parade... -
If the required time was cut in half, I wouldn't complain... but... *shrug* I'll deal either way. :P

Let me add that as one of those crazy "OCD badge-obsessed peoples" that I face a future of having to marionette 12 or so characters x 11 servers between various jobs for a year, count in human error, it will likely take even longer.
That said, I'm happy about this feature in the game.
I'm a person who doesn't team at low levels because Ouroboros does not grant me the ability to "keep" my progress with contacts (another issue, I digress) so I actually mish on a contact until the bar is full, then abandon the story arc for the next, just to fill every gauge.
So I find it funny when people use their OCD as an excuse to talk smack about this feature. Hell, I'm not even employed right now and I still have no problem with it. :P
I play unusually. Im OCD about badges and completism, but I do what I have to do to make things work for me. It means soloing almost exclusively at lower levels, but that's adaptation.
That's an ability we have as humans.
I think this feature will be great, personally. -
This seems to tick off people who only badge on one character and/or play very few or no alts.
Well, I have a full list of characters on every single server, so, I don't think I'll have a problem getting day job badges, especially since I'm crazy enough to badge on ALL of them. lol -
Positron, I just totally had your babies.
