    Hrm, I see.

For what it's worth, I wasn't talking about taking a character made in City of Heroes that the person then tried to use in their own works or IP, though it was helpful to know.

I was thinking more along the lines of a person who made their own character or IP before playing City of Heroes, then tried to make a facsimile of their character in the game, just for the fun of playing as their own creations in a superhero game.

Like, if Howard Tayler (the author of Schlock Mercenary) tried to make a version of one of his webcomic's characters (let's say Kevyn Andreysan, Tagon's Toughs chief engineer and mad scientist) in City of Heroes, just so he could run around Paragon City as Kevyn Andreysan. I was wondering if and how the IP protection rules would affect him, since in a case like that, he'd be playing with a character modeled after his own IP.

Doesn't the Origin description for Mutation cover people who mutate after they're born?

Well, mutate with no explained magical cause or scientific experimentation.

On other hand, if you've already published a character and own the copyright, you would probably still be reported and generic'd, and would then have to prove that you're the copyright holder, at which point they may or may not let you use the likeness again, but at which point you would also probably face repeating the incident if someone else reported you. I'm no expert, but that's how I understand it to work.
Hrm. Well, if I recall copyright laws correctly, the instant you make something, it's copyrighted to you automatically--if you made the character or character concept long before playing CoH, I wonder how that would play out.

Trying to make your own IP out of a character you made in City of X first, though, yeah--I could see a lawsuit coming out of that.

Well, there's that--but I think, as BaBs said, that guy was thinking more of the puzzles you'd find in, say, a Legend of Zelda game.

Concerning what Golden Girl said, I always wondered what it would be like if an MMO used minigame puzzles (e.g. Tetris or Bejeweled) of variable difficulty for things such representing a certain task in a mission (like cracking a safe/secured door or hacking a computer). The difficulty could be adjusted depending on the task and the character's powersets/origins/task at hand/etc.

I for one thought it amusing that our characters fiddled with a Rubik's Cube in order to craft inventions.

Actually, does anyone remember System Shock 2? That had a nice "minigame" model for hacking systems and modding weapons which varied in difficulty depending on system security strength, complexity, and character stats.

FFXI has a reputation for sadism, though ... Maybe if the devs of CoX made their own minigames/puzzles for tasks/crafting, they could be more forgiving about it.

Or, give the option where players can allow the game to do it for them as is currently done in the game--or let them attempt to do it faster via a minigame.

I gotta admit; I'm a badger. I get a kick out of hunting down the plaques and exploration badges, then reading information on the CoX universe that comes with each one. Must be the SEAK in me. The idea that some badges give boosts to stats or adds additional powers has always ticked me pink, though.

Here's something I've been pondering ... Let's say you have an original character you've made. They're your own work and everything, your own IP.

You play City of X and decide to make a character in-game based on your own original character. Would you still be subject to the IP protection practices?

That weirded me out so much when I came back in November! I was used to her saying "Hi there. What's on your mind?" when you spoke to her. But to find out that she's a trainer now--and one for both heroes and villains ...

I wonder if she'll play a significant role in Going Rogue.

Here's a thing from me. I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, so I figured it might be useful to someone:

The Good vs. Evil Edition Jump Pack can be used in combination with flying powers to increase your overall speed, and it's a significant boost to boot.

Although I'm not sure and haven't confirmed this, I think you can get an even stronger boost in speed if you hold down the jump key as you fly, pointing yourself towards the ground slightly so that you jump forward rather than up. I do it anyway, at least.
  13. Well, we finally had a break in the weather out here (freaking cold snap + high winds) and I was able to take the comp outside and blast it with a shop-vac. Put the thermal sensor back in place, too.

I think it fixed my framerate issues!

Temperatures are reading fine now--Speedfan is once again reporting CPU, core, and system temps of 29~35c, up to 40c when playing CoH. Core Temp reports a little higher than Speedfan does, but considering these temperatures where what Speedfan used to report back before I switched motherboards, I'm not concerned.

The video card's temps are now around 73c at rest, 84c under load--and City of Heroes no longer makes the fan crank up. No drop in frame rate, everything remains around 45~60 FPS like it used to!

Thanks for the help and input, guys! I appreciate it!

I don't know if I can procure another video card that easily; the only spare video cards I've got are old AGP cards, and those definitely won't be of help, heh. Testing with a different card will probably be a "last resort" option if nothing else works ...

Some more information on that lightning damage: I've got a APC uninterruptible power supply/battery backup/surge protector combo that should have protected my machine from the storm. Problem was ... the computer had been hooked up to an unprotected router via an ethernet cable just days before. The surge came in through the ethernet adapter--and the storm happened while I wasn't around to unplug the machine from the router. Several hundred dollars down the drain, just because I was careless ... (Suffice to say, the new router is protected by a surge protector now.)

Yeah, the 8800gt has always run this hot. It might be running hotter than a normal 8800gt because this particular model was pre-overclocked at the factory; here's a link to what I have if you want the exact specs.

It scared the hell out of me the first time, and that's when I found out about how hot these cards run ... City of Heroes shouldn't be causing it to crank up so high, though. In the past, the only time the GPU's fan would go into overdrive was when playing a Source Engine-based (or other similarly demanding) game.

Are there other programs I could use to test the integrity of the video card or other hardware?

From what I looked up, that's ContentSAFER, a DRM program. Seems to be Korean in origin, so I think it might be connected to one of the Nexon games I tried back in Septemberish.

I'll look into updating the drivers.

I can verify that both the CPU and GPU fans are running. I can hear the GPU fan running for sure, and I double checked with a flashlight to see if the CPU's is working; it's definitely in motion.

I hadn't thought about taking the CPU's temp; I used to use Speedfan for that, but I hadn't taken a look at the temperature of the system since I'd replaced the motherboard (the wire-based sensor used to be wedged into the housing just below the fan; I hadn't put it back there since switching motherboards).

I'm not sure if I'm getting correct readings due to that; in the past, Speedfan reported the cores as being around 35c in temp. Now it and Core Temp report them at being 80~95c to -25c, which just ... doesn't seem right. In fact; Speedfan reports that the CPU, individual cores, and AUX are all around 85c--but it also reports a System temperature of 30c. Neither the case around the CPU nor the air from the exhaust fan feel hotter than normal.

Still, I'll try taking a shop-vac to it and see if that helps. Got to remember to put the thermal sensor back in place while I'm at it ...

  16. Hey, all. I've been bashing my head into a brick wall over this and I can't seem to fix the problem myself.

In the past few months playing City of Heroes, I've noticed that I've been getting nasty framerate issues. The hell of it is, upon starting City of Heroes and logging in, the frame rate is fine ... for roughly a minute. Then, without explanation, the frame rate drops to 12 FPS and below. It can get incredibly bad when attempting to traverse areas in Rogue Isles. I've seen other people report problems like this in the past few months, too.

This is particularly distressing for me since I'd been playing CoH since late 2008, and back then I enjoyed a good framerate, even with the graphics settings set to near-maximum. I could even record videos in City of Heroes with just about the same smooth FPS as playing normally. I want to continue recording videos, but I won't be able to if I keep having these low framerates plague me!

Below, I've supplied logs from CoHHelper, HijackThis, and DXDiag. Before you guys read the log files, however, here's some important information:
    • This framerate issue did not happen in the past. I used to play the game with 40~60 FPS with the exact same graphics settings that the CoHHelper log reports below. Compare this video I recorded a year ago with a similar one I've recorded recently.
    • I'm using the same CPU, PSU, video card, and RAM as before. I am, however, using a newer motherboard due to my old motherboard suffering lightning damage this summer.

My old motherboard was made by Gigabyte; the new one is from ASUS, but it has almost the exact same specs as the previous one. The newer motherboard was also installed in July 2009, months before these issues cropped up.
    • I'm using the same operating system as before. I was using Windows XP64 SP2 back then. I'm still using it now.
    • The framerate issues are happening in other games. Like with City of Heroes, this didn't happen before December. It's been a real problem in any games that really put a GPU to work, such as the Source Engine games (Left 4 Dead/2, Team Fortress 2, etc). Like in City of Heroes, initial in-game frame rates will be normal for me (60~70 FPS) then drops to the 20s and 10s after a minute or two of play. Compare this L4D2 recording from November to this one from recently.

Also, here's a list of things I've already tried:
    • Altering in-game graphics settings. The frame rate drop occurs (and remains) regardless of what settings I use; putting the settings all the way to minimum with the smallest rendering resolution available still results in a low FPS.
    • Restarting the computer and loading CoH with no other applications running. The frame rate drop happens regardless of what I do or do not have active at the time--and in the past, CoH ran fine with a high frame rate regardless of other active programs.

To further expand on that: I recently shut down the computer entirely, waited for a minute, then booted it back up (partially due to Windows Updates from undoing a System Restore--see below). I loaded City of Heroes; my main character was logged out at Pocket D, in the main dance hall, facing a goodly bit of the graphic-intensive area (including the ski chalet).

Initially, the frame rate was a smooth 55~60, just like always. A few seconds after, the video card's fan slowly turned up bit by bit. According to /showfps, each increase of the fan speed brought with it a decrease in frame rate--from 55~60 to 50~55 to 45~50 to 40~45 and then to 30~40. Once I tried moving around, the frame rate plummeted to 15~20 and stayed there, even when standing still in the same position as when I logged in.

It's almost like the card is underclocking itself, but I'm not sure how or why.
    • Checking video card temperatures. According to nVidia's nTune temperature/usage monitor, the video card is at 80c at rest, and increases to 85~87c when playing graphically intensive games. This is the same temperature it always runs at (sometimes it'd run even hotter in the past); as I've been told, the 8800gt naturally runs hot.
    • Updating drivers. In response to the problems, I tried updating my nVidia drivers from 182 to 195.62. It had no effect.
    • Making exceptions in Avast! antivirus. This solution was suggested to me from a friend who reported the same issue from Source Engine games. I tried making exceptions in Avast! for both Steam's stats file as well as the City of Heroes folder; neither solution worked for CoH or the Steam games I have.
    • Testing for artifacts with ATITools. I did a 20-minute test for artifacts. The video card appears to be fine. ATITools' "furry rotating cube" test also reports that my card can manage 850~1000 FPS.
    • Testing RAM with Memtest86+. I let Memtest86+ run throughout the night, allowing for two full passes. No errors were found.
    • Checking for any system changes in December. I checked the System Restore calendar to see what programs I might have installed, or what system changes occurred in December, that might have caused this. All I found was Quicktime; I uninstalled it, but it didn't help.
    • Performing a System Restore back to late November. At this point, I thought it might have been a Windows Update that caused this issue, or a changed setting in another program. The System Restore didn't help at all! In fact, it made things worse by ruining video playback. Videos would show up as black, glitched screen that caused the OS GUI to flicker and slow to a crawl. Thankfully, undoing the System Restore took care of that problem.

I'm really at my wits' end here. Any suggestions or tips you guys might have would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
