Since every other MMO lives by the Tank, Dps, healer trinity it causes *problems* in CoH/V since the game is designed in such a way that buffs/debuffs are just as powrful....well actually in some cases more powerful then healing. e.g. I was once asked to leave the team when on my Sonic/ right after I was invited. Apparently the team was taking too much damage and needed a healer.
False, it's an inaccurate title by definition. Every AT in the game is by DEFINITION a defender. As with the "scrapper title", everything by said definition "scraps". Scrapper being more accurate but still vague. I understand they don't have specific special abilities like Stalkers do, but alot of things in CoX are very vague.

    Dominator
    Corruptor
    Brute.

By definition nothing matches. I understand it was the devs trying to be original but this is what happens when "original titles" are tried. Fail city.

Yes I know, I've addressed this issue in countless defender rants. What makes CoH so fun is the "special teams" that can accomplish missions. Either all bubble, Rad, Dark etc defender teams, Controller teams etc. It should go without saying, that many people have accomplished many things in CoH, from all scrapper tf's to all blaster ITF's.

That being said, it's not my original point. The "holy trinity" makes certain events easier, but its not definitive (excluding all boss farms). Of course the term "defender" is too broad. And since they're not deemed Priests, people decide that they aren't "healers". But one thing will always remain in MMO's, and thats the support class, which usually has heals. In CoH that would be the emp obviously. But I have healed with a kins, a dark, and a Thermal. Yes I know they don't call us healers.

One should assume the role when there's plenty of damage on a team. You're job is to heal when its needed. I understand you made a bubbler or a Rad and deemed yourself a "buffer" to be different. In the end you're either a buffer or a healer. Let's not try act like MMo's don't need "healers", thats just erroneous.

And FWIW, the PnP "Champs" game was "customizable" far beyond anything Jack (or anyone) would be able to pull-off in a computer game at this point - in the future... Sure, now not a chance!

You could use your character points to buy, for example: an "Energy Blast" or "RKA" (=ranged killing attack), then optionally apply 'advantages' or 'disadvantages' to it (=things that modified the game mechanic of the power & the point cost) Armor Piercing, Autofire, or limited Charges, only (or not) Usable in "___" Environment, etc.

Then you define the SFX of that power: flaming arrows, 'magic force' blasts, any sort of gun/ranged weapon, stale donuts & boiling coffee... = Whatever you can think of - as long as its only the Special Effects/SFX of the power - NOT the Mechanics of the power (that would require another advantage or disadvantage). Like, 'Bouncing' to reflect the shots off surfaces (To shoot foes behind some sort of cover, or around corners... or maybe not if you took "Line of Site" as a disadv.

One of the adv.'s was Variable Special Effects (maybe for an 'Archer' that can produce a variety of arrows or change the appearance of their arrows - like the Color of the archers arrows . Or arrows made of fire, ice, acid, etc.
But, "fire arrows" wouldn't set fire to anything, "ice arrows" wouldn't freeze anything, "acid arrows" wouldn't burn anything... Unless you bought them that way points - maybe via a "Linked" or triggered power.
That would, or could - work much like a "DOT" power...

It could be very simple or very complex (often depending on the GM) and being good with (mostly basic) math helped players quite a bit - although you could always get help "Building a Character" from someone else - often the GM or another player between sessions.
And of course you had to explain your powers, = "run them by the GM" to get his approval some powers could "break" certain storylines/campaigns if you weren't careful - but that's true to some extent in most any game.

Sadly, I doubt we'll see that much freedom (or level of "Customization") in any MMO or computer game, anytime in the near future. I can't forsee a game engine that could handle the truly massive number of possible Game Mechanics and the possible interactions.
Or have the ability for the graphics/SFX to match the imaginations of the Players in a PnP game.

Back to the point, no MMORPG's "Customization" of powers is even remotely close to "New" - and they sure as heck... weren't/aren't all Jack's ideas!

The PnP/tabletop - "Champions - aka HERO System", followed by GURPS, and other games... Have all been WAY more customizable than any computer game published to date. MANY, many - "City of" players have wished the game was more customizable in a manner closer to 4th or 5th Ed. Champions, or GURPS Supers, or a handful of other SuperHero PnP RPG's.
And, when CO was announced - as having the (unbelievably bland) Champs IP - and not the HERO System - with it's point based character building/rules/mechanics/etc:
'There was a great disturbance in the Net, as if the hopes of millions (Ok, 10's of thousands) cried out and were suddenly squashed.' *sigh*
Relax kiddo, clearly I see which you prioritize first between real life and video gaming, but it was never my original point , just a comment that struck you're nerve.

I don't get your comment on Eclipse either, your first comment said that human form gets better defence out of Eclipse, and Obsidian was asking you how, then this comment makes it look like you are thinking Obsidian is saying Eclipse gives more defence in human, which he isn't.

Either way you are wrong about human causing more damage.

Out of the box the human form attacks cause about half the damage as nova, then you add in nova damage bonus on top of that.

You might be thinking about using Sunless Mire to boost human form damage, but that also boosts Nova damage by the same %, and with higher base damage that % counts for more.

Aside from Quasar, which is situational so can't be counted, and Gravity Well which is on a long recharge time so only adds the occasional spike of damage; human form cannot compare to Nova form in terms of damage output.
You must play you're WS horribly, I out damage nova PB's with my WS. Double Mires unchain essense+ quasar = Entire mob dead, Bosses get perma Gravity well's as mine is on a 10 second recharge. All this was without IO's I'm a killing machine with them. This is all excluding Orbiting death and Dark Extraction. Yeah I'm doing far more DPS than nova form.

And what are you talking about Quasar can't be counted?, I Stygian circle the next mob or Eclipse them for end. You seriously don't know how to play a WS. But hey don't take my word for it:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpr1WS5DilA That's me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrBClpWKKyI, my friend. On IO's triform. No Quasar just for you. And yes I'm doing mine on a higher difficulty, Who kills faster?.

On that note, do you mind recording you're point of view? I would love to see how you perform, I'm betting thats not going to happen, I'm assuming you're not going to post a video proving anything are you?.

Less experienced players seem to overlook the pressence of the multitude of other powers Empaths possess. In fact, I feel I haven't done a good enough job at Defending if I have to heal. I prefer to protect my teamates rather than heal up the ones I didn't. So if you hear people calling out for a healer inform them of the much more important services you can provide.
Can we cut it out already?, By definition every class in the game is a "Defender", heroes are in turn defenders of justice. Yes the devs couldn't think of a name for the class. I guess priest was too archaic and medics or doctors where too definitive. Either way, if you come with a heal, you're going to be deemed healer, if you come with buffs...do the math. So on and so on.

Don't change decades of MMO terminology just too further boost you're ego. CoH teams will go on an prosper without dealing with semantics. Yes you're defender comes with blasts, and my tank comes with melee, I would love to see the face of the players on my team if I said I would only perform like an actual tank(moving slowly and hitting every 20 secs) due to the "title" given.

"Defender" is a vague word to use, yes it was a huge mistake by the devs. But don't make it seem like certain AT's aren't healer's, thats just obtuse. Every MMO lives by the holy trinity ; Tank, Dps, Healer.

More moves? Again no. 27 powers is "27 possible moves" while thr Tri-Form has 25 moves + another 9 "moves" from the forms.

More defence via Eclipse? Exactly how do you get past the ressist cap I seem to reach from using Eclipse on my Tri-Form?
Wasn't my point, let me clarify you silly goose.

More damage compared to squid form = Yes, very much so.

More moves as a human than in squid form = yes obviously.

More defense on Eclipse via Io's....why do I even need to explain this?, are you looking for an argument?. Sorry kiddo I wouldnt bother.

We would still be getting things if Jack was here regardless. It was his original idea to have EVERYTHING customizable. A little google or youtubeing should help you. Even since CoH released Jack wanted even powers to be changeable. Look up some of his interviews, he states this more than once.

The point remains everything we're getting now was planned years before. It's only now that CO is coming out, that the horn of competition sounded. And now every little nook that CO comes out with, conveniently and coincedentally, happens to be made into an issue add-on in CoH.

In the end why complain?, two hero MMO's with uber customization, how can you go wrong?.

(Mechanon, especially the earlier versions, was such a direct clone of Marvel's Ultron it was amusing.)

Now Hero Games did eventually create a fairly distinct cast of characters and organizations, but the City of X characters and groups resemble the Champions settings and characters less than most other superhero settings.

Of course this is based on my owning most of the Champions material from the first box set to a variety of post Hero System Fifth Edition supplements. (Including the Fifth Edition release of the Champions setting.) You may have material for Champions that was never published outside of the Hero Games studios, but otherwise i don't see where you got that.

*Dr. Wrong and his Wrongbots rant goes here*

Well the main thing to understand is that most if not all of the customization options where Jack's ideas. He was the prominent figure in CoH when it came to wanting to look different. As he has said countless times, he wanted a world where everyone was as diversed as the powers themselves.

What Jack did is make CO more Customizable obviously. Of course, things like power color changing and different travel powers where his ideas to begin with. I also find it funny that the sidekick system coming to i16 is pretty much the same as it is in CO. Strickingly coincedental timing aside....I do hope both just get better than that other MMO's out.

And no I didn't play the PNP Heroes game, I was too busy having sex. But I'm sure I would have loved it.

QFT as Jack had power customization already thought out. I'm guessing alot of players on these boards don't actually do any research, but just to inform those who don't, Jack Emmert pretty much made CoH the customization giant that it has become, everything from travel powers to power look was his general niche. As he stated in Gen con, he wanted "EVERYTHING" customizable.

But hey don't just take my word for it, youtube or google can help those that wish to know.

Expect CoH to steal any feature CO has, and why not? two perfect MMO's? I like this day and age. Beats Age of Conan and WoW.

In fact I have every reason to believe that its possible for a team made up of scrappers and blasters only can do the MoSTF. What the tanker, defender and controllers can bring though is more security.

See shannon, after IO's came, players decided to "maximize" their Scrappers that they had shelved. And take on AV's and do RWZ challenges and further prove that they are "1337", the rest just wanted to feel more durable while doing tons of damage. I found it a bit cheap that scrappers could have more life and stronger regenration than Tanks. That kind of killed it for me. As its like making a Rogue in WoW take on more than three mobs. It's ridiculous but, you can't stop the ball from rolling.

Lastly, I say, take off the aggro cap. I'm tired of seeing my defender or blaster taken out because the tank aggroed two groups. And I honestly hate being the tank and have to watch enemies standing 5 feet away from my character pay no attention to me, even through my taunt, just because of the cap.

Exclusively herding as it was in the old days ("wait here while I herd the entire floor") was not positive. It was boring spending more time waiting than fighting. Then there were situations where my Regen Scrapper was shredded in seconds due to AoEs on the Tanker - that is through toggle IH, mind you.

I didn't play a Tank back then, but I can understand why it would be fun (for the Tank). Having said that, I'm not eager to return to those days at all despite my current Tank fascination.
It's called tactic. I would rather My tanker spend a total of three minutes herding aggro, than spending thirty minutes to an hour killing mobs. Herding is coupled with a good blaster. Plus it's all up to the team leader. I'm no control freak, but I do so love the joy of herding an entire room and having the blaster on my team nuke the mob. To me I either spend more time taking one group at a time, or take an entire room, which one feels more epic?.

Then again you never played a tank back then, as you posted, so I'm assuming you like things the way they are because you know no better.

However both can exceed in durability anything this game has to throw at them. Given that, the general consensus is that WP is much more satisfying to play in that it doesn't come with Stone's penalties (both mechanical and aesthetic).

P.S. - I spent about 40mil influence on my WP Tanker and he out tanks most every Stoner I've compared him to. One of the perks about WP is that it's easier (and cheaper) to build defense then it is to build recharge via IOs.
With that very same logic Kruunch, I have out performed all WP's I run into. Its all MMV. Sometimes you just run into bad players. And sometimes someone is using IO's and someone is not.I'm sure many people on the boards will chime in with their own "glory stories" of out performing top tier tanks. You have either a Fire saying he out perforemd an Invul, an Invul saying he out performed a Granite and so on. In this day and age of IO's anything is possible, yet some definitives still remain,

On Granite.I still don't understand these people saying "Penalty here, penalty there". I have no problems running my Granite through TF's, AE boss farms, etc. If I can already do this without the help of IO's, then I would imagine IO's would make it "easier". Using the movement penalty as a means to say that Granite is weaker than WP is ignorance.

The res and defense of a lvl 50 WP with all powers, no IO's(with tough and weave) :

    S/L res- 72.5%
    Psionic res- 44.1%
    E/N/T/F/C res- 11.7%

    S/L Def -13.4%
    Psionic Def- 24%
    E/N/F/C res - 29.2%
    Melee, Ranged , Aoe - 8.1%

    Now the Res and defenses of Granite, all powers no tough or weave;

    S/L Res- 90% capped
    E/N/T/F/C res - 78%
    Melee, Ranged , Aoe- 5%
    Psionic- 0

    S/L Def -36.2
    E/N/T/F/C def- 36.2
    Psionic - 5%
    --------------------------------------------

Statistcally Granite takes it End game. With IO's Granite wins by a landslide (no pun intended).
