Quote:I disagree; it's just a matter of degree. If it can be done easily, then certainly post haste (within reason). But if as you suggest it would take more than 3 months, then likely not so much.No matter how people want to put it, it still isn't worth the development time to cater to a group that is not willing to subscribe for a measly 3 months.
In my own personal experience lately, trying to help new players, I find it quite frustrating that they cannot respond to Tells.
A tangent, but a related one; might be worth some amount of development time to make it so that F2P and low tier Preems can do that much. It would certainly reduce the strain on the Help channel. -
3 even con minions is supposed to be a fight you WILL win, but should not be able to sleep through.
Completing your missions at base difficulty is still the standard.
The fact that most people function above this level is a player thing, not a dev thing.
Trapdoor falls under 'exceptions' and 'Incarnate content' even though it is technically pre-Incarnation. -

Quote:It would be known beforehand (barring predjudice); 'evil' = 'antisocial' in this context. Before taking the drug, the scientists would know whether it was socially acceptable/preferable for them to administer it. Unless, of course, they themselves are psychotic...Sure, the cure should be administered to convicted felons of heinous crimes (murder, not shoplifting) and those who administer the cure should also take it. If they still feel like administering the cure to criminals after taking it, then it is not evil.
One part of the question is to what degree should a society protect itself from social deviance? If to any extent, what methods should it stop at?
What could be more 'humane' than a society where social deviance (and the dangers thereof) are not an issue, because such people are simply not born in the first place?
Of course, that brings us back to the question of whether there is a such thing as 'rational evil' or 'rational antisocial behaviour'. -
Quote:First, did I miss a memo? Last I heard, sexual preference was supposed to be genetic.Last I knew no sexual preference gene exists (nor intelligence gene or a violence gene) and practically given up on except by a few.
So that example just seems bad.
As for taking away all evil, didn't they try that in Gattaca, and those who had it taken a way still ended up killing someone (at least the one killer in the movie). Besides that, talk about taking away free will.
Not to mention, who would decide what exactly is evil? Is killing an animal to eat it evil? According to some it is!
As for what you say "I felt like it" there goes any sort of after hours night life. Not to mention some great marriages that likely started off with some less than noble intentions (on either side).
"We have 2.5 children because this is what is expected of us." *nod nod...go on mediorce way*.
In the end, I'd rather protect peoples rights to be jerks than to have it taken away.
Haven't seen Gattaca, which is a shame because *sigh* Uma... is in it.
In this scenario, 'evil' is defined by your society, whatever that may be, from your nuclear family up to the world community.
As for the night life and great marriages, see eggs and omelets. -

Quote:I'm speaking from the point of view of 20th/21st century North American society. It wasn't long ago (read a 1040s Batman, or Doc Savage pulps, or watch newsreels or read newspapers from that time) that all criminal behaviour was considered a potentially treatable medical aberration.Which society? and only with specific isntances (like the serial killers example). In regards to other evil things, such as robbery, fraud, murder for profit, slavery, racism, war, line dancing etc..., its certainly not the general societal view that everyone invloved in such practises are socio/psychopaths.
Also, wasn't this an episode of Voyager?
So yes, all the 'other evil things' on that list are considered forms of sociopathy and psychopathy for this discussion.
EDIT: There probnably isn't much Star Trek hasn't done. And if there is, Simpsons did it. -
-
Quote:Current society tends to redefine what would have been considered 'evil' in a previous century as 'sociopathy' or 'psychopathy'.I don't see how what you are describing is in any way abolishing evil?
Hannibal the Cannibal and Michael Myers (either one) aren't 'evil', they are 'sociopaths'.
The implication being that if they had normal brain wiring, they would be incapable of eating people, chasing their sisters with knives, or making The Love Guru.
Or at least that if they did such things it would be for understandable reasons. -
Quote:The shot doesn't force you to do anything. If you have logical, rational reasons for avoiding people (you are in the witness protection programme, you have a communicable disease, you have to be at work early the next day) those reasons are still in place, and you can act on them as per normal. And how would this affect your average anti-social person? If you wanted to give me a shot that made me want to hang out with people and go bar hopping then be prepared to fight me.
On the other hand, if your reasons are chemically/genetically derived, you will no longer feel the same way.
If someone invites you bar hopping, you won't "not want to go" by default. If you don't have a reason to stay home that you can't articulate (even something as simple as 'playing CoH is more fun than bar hopping'), you probably will want to go. -
Quote:From the point of view of a hypothetical scientist, removing sociopathy from a person is not removing free will, it is enabling it.My initial reaction?
The act of removing the "free will" from someone is just as evil.
By (my own enclosed) definition, a person suffering from sociopathy is unable to care about society; it is not their choice.
A person is left with the ability to disdain society, but only from logical, conscious, rational intent. -
As can be seen from the recent minor kerfluffle over the perceived 'weakness' of Street Justice (not my perception but then I haven't bought it yet), it is my current belief that the Devs do not intend to make 'buy only' items any more powerful than what is available ingame.
Nor does it seem to be that they intend that only the most powerful stuff is in the store.
I don't personally have a problem with people being able to get stuff faster via money than they could ingame, but I do hope they will keep the 'buy only' stuff to a minimum.
However there will always be something shiny in the store to entice people to subscribe and buy it with those 'free' VIP points. This makes total sense to me. -
...if it were discovered to be genetic?
Some/many/all(?) psychological conditions have a chemical and possibly genetic origin, with others being a result of environmental conditions. This ranges from destructive urges such as suicidal depression to social variance such as sexuality.
It can be extrapolated then, that sociopathy (defined here as an emotional disdain for society that renders one incapable of feeling like they "ought to" obey the rules) and psychopathy (defined here as an inability to comprehend society in a way that allows one to comprehend what the rules actually are) may be the result of genetic flaws in an individual. Almost literally, "brain wired differently".
If a retrovirus were developed that could isolate and remove these genetic disorders, and repair them if they developed from environmental conditions, should it be used?
For this discussion, let's ignore tangents such as the possibility of nightmare runaway mutations and the like, and concentrate on the main issues:
- Every human develops a conscience that they cannot simply ignore: they can only overcome it with will/logic. You can ignore the needs of society, but your reason will never be "I felt like it".
- Potentially 'benevolent' social/mental disorders are also abolished, such as autistic savants, or some cases of ADD or ADHD (so no mad scientists consumed by a single theory, etc)
- Morality and Ethics are entirely determined over time by the needs of society and community. It is almost impossible to avoid wanting to pitch in and help make things better. What 'better' means is determined, recursively, by society itself. -
Okay, I have only run this blue side so far:
Soloed with Beyond, my grav/rad
Soloed with Kitsune9tails, my inv/fire Tanker
Duoed with Wilhemina Harker, my mind/storm Controller (thanks to Fulmination; it was an honor to assist you)
1: I like the writing much better this time around. It felt like I was actually investigating a mystery with stuff going on in the background, rather than just chasing after a surprisingly mobile multi-story pillar. The settings did seem less linked together, but that did not bother me. Granted, it was still chasing down the MacGuffin, but the bank sequence and the portal hopping really nailed it down for me. The interaction with the bank manager was cool, and gave you a Choice That Mattered sort of. More of this, please.
2: Note that it is really possible to interact with the bank manager despite the white reticle, and that the choice to threaten him is NOT a "But Thou Must" choice. This is AWESOME.
3: Anyone else try to go get one-shotted by Hamidon?
4: Trust Samuel Tow to stare at a picture of a beautiful woman for a half hour, then pick it apart. I think it's some of the most beautiful art I have seen in this game yet (not to say any of his individual points are wrong). I may make it my background. Still: please include comic pages behind these if you are going to have them, to provide recaps/preludes that help non-mission holders know what's going on.
5: On that note, I really appreciate the dialogue spam and that is not sarcasm. When duoing the mission as Not The Mission Holder, it helped me understand what is going on.
6: Roleplaying through with Beyond was funny, since she cannot speak. She just radiates curiosity at the bank manager and he starts stuttering about the Midnighters? Guilty much?
7: I like the experimenting with puzzle elements. Read your clues. It really gives the whole thing a feel different from 'rush through smash all' and I for one appreciate this.
8: The final Bosses were not that tough for my guys, although Kitsune9tails ended up calling Positron for help
9: But to end on a bit of a downer note: The first part was not worth $5 in terms of gameplay alone. Neither was this part. They do have new enemies, new mechanics, beautiful art and more, but unless you bust out:
- A new zone larger than Cimemora
- A couple new powersets
- A couple new costume sets, plus emotes
- A new system, such as an 'arch enemy' system or PvE base raids
...there is no way this is all going to be worth the cost of an expansion by the end. Even with the Hero/Villain Merits.
I suggest a price point of like $5 for the first part you buy (since that gates the Hero/Villain Merit per week), with subsequent parts like $2 each.
Granted, you may have vast spectacularness planted for later parts, but this is my current feeling. -
Anyone else dance atop the Disco Ball of Doom?
-
There is nothing wrong with asking for a 'buy it now' price for SG chat.
I wonder if they have the tech to sell individual channels? -
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji may have been the main, but Asuka and Rei were just as important, deep and messed-up as he.
One Piece: See above for Robin and the other main female characters
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Believe it or not, she's only 14.
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water -
Do you have PMs/tickets in with the Devs over this?

Quote:Wrong, in a way.If all the burgers in the world were the exact same price and had the same availability, I can guarantee you that the best burgers would be the ones most consumed.
In this case, not all of the 'burgers' have the same quality and the same availability.
Just as in RL, the quality of a burger is partly subjective. And the 'sugar rush' burgers are being produced in greater quantities than the 'gourmet' burgers (time, thought, and phrase-turning are not available to everyone in the same quantity, nor are they used to the same degree by everyone).
And the labelling labels the majority of them as 'healthy' to avoid possible regulation, so you can't tell if you are eating Clown, Redhead or Royalty burgers until you bite in.
All I want is a system that helps a young shopper find the kind of burgers they prefer without having to think of weeding out the vast majority with a piece of paper and a pencil. -
It is my hope that an F2P channel would at least dilute the issue.
-
In a game with over a hundred thousand players, "Nobody" equates to "less than a thousand people".

Quote:Judging by the email boxes of my older characters, ignore/spam is not strong enough. They just make new accounts and spam again. An 'easier' (percieved) solution would be to simply have an extra 'ignored as spammer' list that you can use to blam RMT's onto if they bother you. I mean, are people seriously incapable of putting these idiots on ignore?
One problem with allowing F2P players to reply to tells is that once you tell to them once, they can reply to you forever (until they log off). However, I don't see how allowing them into a player-created channel can be abused if they can be kicked back out of it. I've never tried to kick anyone off of a channel, so I honestly don't know.
I suppose a spammer could wait until no admins are in the channel, then spam, but I'm not sure how often that could crop up. -
That's an interesting perspective.
Doesn't change the fact that stories and farms need to be seperately labeled in the AE, so that the majority can find what they want and the minority can find what they want.
What we are talking about here is a situation where you can't tell the difference between an Orson Welles movie and a Micheal Bay movie and an M. Night Shymalan movie and a Uwe Boll movie from the advertising. -
Quote:Rephrase with less rant-ishness in a PM to NCSoft_Zwillinger and he will see to it that your words reach the marketing people and the devs.$45 to get a decent chat capability?
That's pathetic, even by "business is to make money" standards. Good way to tick off the VIPs AND alienate new players in the same go. Sure, that just sounded a bit rant-ish, but this is ridiculous.
This is a new system and a great time to suggest reasonable modifications.
