I would never intentionally imply that the way anyone plays the game is "wrong". I was just curious about a playstyle that seemed to miss the point of TFs. After reading so many responses, I do see the merit in running speed TFs...it just isn't my cup of tea.

Quote:You are correct. This game is extremely solo-friendly, and I am extremely grateful that the devs have provided solo alternatives to nearly everything in the game. It is this soloability that initially attracted me to this game (although I do prefer teaming now that I'm here). This is just a minor annoyance in a game that is as close to perfection that I can imagine a video game being.I'm guessing you don't play too many table-top roleplaying games. The classic mindset that "The Game Master is always right" is present even in computer based MMORPGs. Clearly you don't have to like it (or even understand it) but if you want to play the game you'll play by the established Dev rules.
Frankly I still marvel just how solo-friendly this game is regardless of this one particular issue. There's really no reason it MUST be as solo-friendly as it is already. The Devs have already given in on 99 of 100 "solo vs. team" issues already. The fact that they want to keep this one last one may be irksome to some people but it's ultimately fair all things considered. At least the "workarounds" for it are simple enough. -
Quote:Thanks for the link, but that seems like a pretty weak excuse. Many story arc missions give a warning/disclaimer that multiple heroes/villains will be needed for completion, but I still have the option to go it alone. Why not add a similar warning to the beginning TF dialogue? I guess we are beating a dead horse with this request, but it is something that seemed like a no brainer when I first started playing. I was actaully surprised I couldn't attempt TFs alone.Castle did here
How about this? Instead of a prohibitive mechanic to function as a warning, we remove that mechanic and add an actual warning. -
Quote:Have the devs ever spoken to the reason for not including this option? Many of my heroes and especially my villains are not "works well with others" types, so the option to play those characters the way I see them would be awesome. You may not see a reason but apparently the Devs do.
People have been suggesting something like this pretty much since the game launched almost 7 years ago and it still hasn't happened. I'm not really saying that's right or wrong. I'm just saying that out of the literally hundreds of QoL improvements that have been added to the game over the years this hasn't been one of them.
Perhaps it's something the Devs simply don't want to budge on. The Devs have actually added quite a few features over the years to make it easier for players to adjust level and "I'm equivalent to X number of players" type difficulty settings and the ability to run through all sorts of arcs via Ouroboros. My guess is that they consider those things to be enough of a "concession" to those interests. -
I think this would please a lot of sections of the player community. It would give the "no forced teaming" crowd a way to get their incarnate components solo without having to grind for shards, it would allow the min/maxers to take on the challenge of soloing the higher end TFs without having to waste time finding padders, and it would make people who enjoy less popular TFs (Synapse anyone?) a way to run their favorite content without having to drag along people who don't want to be there. I see absolutely no reason not to do this

I will say that in two attempts this week I have had no problem whatsoever in putting together kill most/kill all TFs. The important thing is to advertise it as such when you recruit in global channels, broadcast, etc. There seem to be plenty of people out there who enjoy taking time to smell the roses to accomodate us slow TFers.
-
I light of the double merit rewards and the huge XP bonus from running the WST, are there any objections to switching this week's agenda to the Sister Psyche TF and hitting Posi next week?

So last night I decided to join a Silver Mantis SF on my lvl 26 brute, and taking the advice of many folks on this board I started the team myself advising folks that as a predominately blue side player, this would be the first time I've run this particular SF and would like to take my time about it. Didn't take long at all to get a team of six together. After everyone made introductions, we found that no one on the team had ever run Silver Mantis. That made for a very interesting and extremely fun TF. Not sure how long this TF generally runs, but we finished in about 90 minutes. It was awesome having to strategize through each mission as apposed to just following the orders of someone who has run it 15 times in the same day. I imagine this is what the game felt like in the beginning.

Thanks Uber! This is my first MMO, so I have zero experience with this style of gaming, and with the MMO community, but from what I've heard about other MMOs, our community is awesome, and starting a good discussion without insults being hurled seems to be the norm.
-
My intention was not to start an argument, but to better understand a playstyle that seemed redundant and boring. I've heard from a variety of speed TFers on this thread, and certainly see their points, and do not begrudge their fun one bit. My assumption that people would do what you call "slow" runs stems from the fact that they made no indication that speed was their intention. If a TF is organized with no qualifiers, I assumed it would be run as intended by the devs. I realize now that is not the case, and I will be sure in the future that when I accept a TF invite, I understand the team's intentions and goals. I never insinuiated that speed TFs were wrong, I just sought a better understanding of the speed mentality. My sincere apologies if I came off as anything but inquisitive.

Quote:Glad I could make you chuckle. Freedom is my home, but I do vacation in Virtue from time to time. My highest level toon on Virtue is a fresh from Praetoria lvl 20 KM/regen scrapper. Next time I'm there, I'll look you up.Irish, you just made my day!
I pick the huge toon and reduce the shoulder, shorten the legs, reduce the chest, increase the waist and hips, and I STILL don't look like me irl!
6'6" and 390lbs. means I have had my share of baconators my friend!
If you are EVER on Virtue, look for pretty much ANY character with "Beorn" in the name and it'll probably be me. Send me a tell and we will merrily meander through a TF/SF of your choosing!
Color me pleased! -

Quote:That is frustrting for me too. If I am looking for and am invited to a TF, I assume, unless otherwise stated, that it is not a speed run. I get frustrated when we ge to the first missions and the team leader says, everyone wait here while "X player" ghosts to the objective. I feel that I've commited myself to the team, so I can't bring myself to quit, even though I know I am in for exactly what I tried to avoid by not accepting invites to advertised speed TFs.Speed TFs don't make me sad. Neither do kill-all TFs. Bad players, I nickname them the TF Law Enforcement Agency, who think that starting a Task Force gives them the final say in how it should be run.
Sure, they start it and have the power to kick players out. Fine. I get that. But when they spam the channels looking for anyone and inviting anyone just to fill the roster without saying it's a 'speed run' or a 'kill all' and wait until the first mish is up, all the while seeing the chatter about how the other players want to run, before declaring "DO THIS!"
And that's not quite enough for them either. If anyone goes off script, they freak out. Even if it fits the strategy. Even if it doesn't hurt the time or the shard count. "WE MUST DO EVERYTHING PERFECT NAO!"
Now, I ask before joining. Once joined, I provide ideas and suggestions. If someone has an equally good suggestion, I'm fine with that. And I will butt my nose in when people bicker about silly details. As long as it gets done and people get what they want out of it, why get all huffy?
Luckily, my SG likes to stroll through content so I have a group when I want to do everything in a Task Force. If I need speed, I can find that too in those powergroups.
There are worse things than speed runs.... failed runs. -

You are obviously not a fat kid. I savor my baconator with the same vigor as a filet mignon.

I would never suggest changing the current reward structure to accomodate the way I want to play the game at the expense of other players. My $15 is no more valuable than anyone else's, but adding additional rewards for playing the TFs as intended would be nice. Granted, incarnate shards have done just that for the high level TFs and I am glad for that, but for the lower level stuff...not so much.
-
I guess I can understand the reward vs time argument. I've just never been a reward-driven gamer. For me, its always been about the experience, but that's just me. I don't pay your fifteen bucks, so as long as you are having fun...so be it. From now on, I'll start my own TFs.

I have been playing the game just over six months now, and have noticed TFs do not seem to be enjoyed the way I would like to enjoy them. As a new player, I was always hesitant to start and lead a TF because I wasn't familiar with them at all. So I joined other people's teams to get experience, and found that I wasn't learning anything because the missions ended before I knew what was going on. Last night, I was trying to hop on a LGTF to get a Notice for my blaster. I've run the LGTF a few times, and it was always on a speed run. I tried for a few minutes to find a team with no luck so I fugured, what the heck, why not throw a team together and give it a shot. I sent out a call for members to join a "kill most" LGTF and I was full in seconds. I told the team I had never led a LGTF and that I had only ever done speed runs. They all seemed okay with it so off we went. Let me tell you, I have never enjoyed a task force more than I did that one. We actually saved Penny in the first mission, and rescued everyone in the third mission. We took our time killing everything in our path and actually PLAYED through the TF, and it only took one hour and twenty minutes. I feel like this is what TFs were meant to be, and wish more people would run them this way.
Am I alone on this? Can you speed TFers explain the appeal of skipping half the fun? I guess a vet player who has been there done that wouldn't want to do it again, but if you don't like the TF, why run it at all? -
It is indeed a sight to behold. At one point last week, three of us hit an executioner's shot on a freak stunner simultaneously. It was just plain brutal and awesome.

I've seen DP/EM do amazing things. I know this is the blaster forum, but I am a big fan of my DP/KIN corruptor. Since we all seem to be fans of DP, perhaps some of you would be interested in joining my new dual pistols super team on Freedom?

Just a reminder that the Dual Pistols Super team will be meeting on Thursday, the 24th @ 6:00 PM EST in Steel Canyon to run The Positron Task Force. The team so far...

Quote:Good advice to be sure, and I thank you. I do have 3 level 50 characters. My first 50 was leveled "legit" but the other two *braces for forum rage* came out of Monkeygate. It is not something I am proud of, and I realize now how much I missed by cheating. I can only offer my newbieness as an excuse. Since then, I am enjoying the journey far more than I enjoyed the destination on those two. However, if you want to get past that "20s" speed bump you're seeing, OP -
- Find a good SG. Run with them. Soon you'll be in the 30s, 40s, 50s. No, I don't mean PL them.
- Become part of a "theme team." Forces you to keep some attention on one character for a while - and you're missing quite a bit if you don't get past the 20s.
- RP. Not all of it's in Pocket D. If you're with a group and you develop a character, it helps "lock you in" to that character and the people he/she/it plays with for a while.
I am a bit apprehensive regarding RP. I have never attempted it (this is my first MMO) and am not clear on the rules and ettiquette. I made toons on Virtue to try it out, but mainly ended up soloing or duoing with my RL friends.
Since you mentioned theme teams, I'll take this opportunity to plug one I am trying to get started. -
Thursday works best for me as well, so Thursday the 24th it is.

Quote:Funny you should mention Bane Spiders. We just made a duo on Virtue a couple weeks ago. Currently at level 10ish. Their names are Tango and CashYay! More friends! My vacation homes are Triumph (red) and Justice (blue) ...with an annex on Guardian. I have 35 characters on Virtue. And I'm trying to hold off on buying the last slot until vet rewards gives me another one. If I decide I need a crab Spider I might not make it. (I have a "gotta catch 'em all" kind of mentality. I want one of each AT, preferably at 50. I love control and support sets so I'm controller/dominator/corruptor and bots MM heavy.)
I have fallen woefully behind on bios. And on VirtueVerse (which if you aren't aware of, you should be - its awesome) I need to get some time to take/crop screenshots and make sure my whole group is up and story current. All of my characters have stories in my head, not all of them have made it to the bio screen.Their story?
After the massive box office success of the film telling their true story, Detectives Tango and Cash became instant world wide celebrities. They rubbed shoulders with the world's most interesting men, and bedded the most exotic women. At the height of their fame, while a much anticipated sequel starring the two was in the works, they were captured by Lord Recluse's men, and augmented with Arachnos technology. Now they roam the streets of the Rogue Isles doing Recluse's bidding.
Not verbatim from the bio screen, but you get the idea. My global is @Guardian Irish-Fury. Find me if I don't find you. New friends are always good.
What is this VirtueVerse you speak of?
