I doubt Jay hates the look in general (or rather, if he does, it's irrelevant), but the way it looks when he has to implement it under the current system. He's not saying "I hate that look.", he's saying "I can't get that look to look good under the restrictions we have here."

I don't mean to come off as feeling entitled, but in this instance, yeah, we kinda do pay his salary. With no players, there is no NCsoft, and Paragon Studios is left up a certain metaphorical creek with no paddle and a leaky canoe. I'm not saying we should be able to boss him around, but for someone to say "No, I don't like that so I won't do it', when he's got the people who pay to play the game asking for it, qualifies as stupid.
That said, if it is just a matter of not being able to work out the animations without massive clipping issues, that's perfectly fine. I have no issue with that. God knows there's enough of that already, no need to try and add something that won't work anyway.

I want costume pieces that look like, "I would wear this in real life!"

As said above, I agree that if it's for actual reasons/limitations with the game, then that sucks, but oh well. I, too, would truly love to create a proper arcane magi character, but at the same time, I want him to look the part, and not have massive clipping issues.
