This is a lot of overwrought Sturm und Drang about somebody having a contest to draw their character. I really can't see how one person doing so has any real impact on the development of the current generation of up and coming artists. I think the trend in general is kind of silly but if the character is appealing and you have some free time, why not?
Personally, I have no interest in it because I find the situation both too specific (has to be someone's character) and too vague (what are they looking for in a winning entry?). If I'm going to devote the time, I'll do a cgtalk challenge where my chances of winning are virtually nil, but the prizes are huge and there's a forum set up to follow the progress of the entries and provide feedback as they are developed.
If someone is going to be somehow damaged by taking part in a small-scale contest--they shouldn't be seriously thinking about art to begin with. Really, too many people pick up a pencil and draw something they think is magical and then wither when it doesn't get praised or some crass fellow says it sucks. Usually when it DOES suck. Beat these people down Caemgen! Beat these people down with your art contest of doom and take the losers out back and shoot them lol.
Is Caemgen a scumbag for offering such a contest? Is this an evil capitalist scheme to scam a bunch of free art? Well, if your motivation for doing art is money, the question is moot because you WILL work for greedy scumbags, or else you're not going to make it far in that business venture.
If you're idealistic and don't like seeing the hard work of the artist cheapened by the thuggish machinations of proto-art *****, then you best fly fly away from the evil caemgen and don't let your pencil cross his path. Stay far away from commercial art in general.
If you like the characters and feel like drawing something, knock yourself out. Maybe you'll win some moneys!
tldr version:
If you want to do it, do it. I don't see a big issue here. -
Wow that Slingshot piece is pretty amazing. Nice composition.

Quote:Trying to get back in the mood?!? How did the Robert Chang workshop go?I've been trying to get back in the mood to draw stuff. Found an internet based drawing tool called Harmony, and I really like to play around with it. (It works best on Google Chrome for me, and doesn't work at all on IE.)
That app is pretty nice! -
If a player wins the live server competition, are they required to use the same character for the test server portion?

Hiya,
Just a reminder that I'll be doing a Livestream tonight at 10:15pm est.

Hi guys,
I will be doing a Livestream tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 10:15pm est.
livestream.com/bwbabble
I'll probably talk about a commission I'm working on, but if anyone has any questions/working methods/etc. they'd like me to address, that's always good to know. -
If you goto that webpage, there is an ondemand section where you can watch recordings of previous sessions. The only drawback is that you can't read people's chat comments unless you have a ginormous monitor like Christopher Robbin's.

I've been doing a lot of thumbnails for some big commissions and have tons of stuff in progress for the sketchbook, so hopefully it will be food for thought, grist for the mill, yada yada. -
Hey guys,
Think I'm going to cancel the Livestream tonight. Feel like I might be fighting the flu or something. Sorry, will be back next week. -
17. Resolution
Mrs. Ward slid the door of the van shut and opened her laptop. She reluctantly started an entry then stopped and stared at Slan with a dazed disbelief.
"So we're just walking away."
"Yes. That is the prudent thing to do."
"And we're going to leave this child in the hands of this entity. And let it continue to guide him towards these criminals."
"Yes."
She laughed and shrugged, pounding her forhead with her fist.
"I don't even know how to make this entry..."
"The entity does not work the way we do. It moves pieces into place in order to achieve desired effects. But it does not manage the pieces themselves."
"You're going to have to elaborate. That is much too cryptic to follow. It looks to me like it granted the child superpowers without giving him the training to use them properly."
"Yes that is true."
Slan gestured and began watching spectral images of Tommy in action. They watched as he tripped and slid between the legs of the demon, rocketing down the alley and hitting the wall.
"The child's purpose is not to fight crime. So the training was not deemed necessary."
"How is he supposed to become a crime fighter if he can't even control his abilities?"
"He's not."
"Then why was he chosen? Why did the entity pass to him?"
"Because he's innocent. And he is incorruptible. He will always do what he believes is the right thing, although he will naturally sometimes make mistakes."
"He won't stay that way for long if he's thrown in with them."
"Yes he will. That's why he is being placed there."
"I don't understand."
Slan waved her hand. Images of Statesman and Lord Recluse appeared in the cabin of the van. The two figures began to fight. The image froze with the two figures caught in action--Statesman in mid punch, Recluse lashing out with his mechanical spider limbs.
"Here you have two opposing moral positions, commonly defined as good and evil. Each defines the other. Each seeks to overcome the other and remove it from the world. We as superheroes fight our counterparts to prevent them from influencing the people around us through violence, crime, etc. That is our way."
Ward nodded. "Yes. We are here to protect innocent lives. We are keeping people free, letting them pursue a good life without fear of oppression."
"The entity views us as this." Slan gestured and the images of Statesman and Lord Recluse faded. In their place was a large bottle of aspirin. "We are merely addressing symptoms without offering a cure."
"And it thinks that tossing this poor boy into the hands of the Dark Legion group will somehow reform them?"
"It stated to me that evil as we conceive of it cannot be defeated. It must be transcended. The boy's presence with them has already changing the course of the future. He may have already served the intended goal...it's very difficult to make a determination when dealing with creatures who exist outside of the time stream."
"So we're done here?"
"Yes, for now."
"And what about this family fun day thing...you've seen who is coming for the child?"
"Yes."
"We're not going to stop him?"
"No. It will play out." -
Hola,
Sorry about the long delay for an update. I've been slammed with work. I understand the last section was confusing with all the voices, it was a bit rushed at the time. I don't think the next sections will be a problem. -
Stopped using it for a while. All the phat pvp loot is on this one.
.....
I'll be doing a Livestream tonight at 10:15 pm est.

Thanks! That color is pretty challenging to work with in terms of skin coloration.

Nice! Those are definitely tools that should be a standard part of a drawing package.
