Positron's Dev Diary is posted on the Euro boards.

    It's on our boards also.

    Well, so it is.

Here's a link to the US copy.

    Secret Identity: Emperor Marcus Cole

Just keep a level-head, and have a GM look into your issue. All the best.

IIRC, the title is going to be: Issue 16 - Power in Technicolor.

Didn't you get the update? It's now called "Issue 16: Color of Success" and it includes the new "Morris Day" temp power.

I recently listened to a (very amateur) interview with him about his Geek Mafia books, and the interviewer had a City of Heroes related segment. Rick made a comment that he found it "interesting" that Cryptic was going with a classless system for CO, as he'd originally wanted for CoH. He said "interesting" in a "and they told me that wouldn't work" tone of voice.

So-- Rick wanted a system radically different from what was here at release. We don't know exactly who wanted it to change-- Jack? Michael Lewis? Richard Garriott (who Jack quoted a few times after he took over as lead designer) or someone else at NCSoft? Would Rick have continued to fight the idea as a lead designer?

    [/ QUOTE ]

From my recollection of Jack's and Gaffer's postings in the early days and on the beta boards, it was NCSoft execs who pushed for the standard MMO archetypes of "tank", "healer", etc. Gaffer was Jeremy Gaffney, the NCSoft executive producer for CoH. Gaffney previously worked on Asheron's Call from developer Turbine.

Cryptic changed the design plan from the "open" system to the "archetype" system in the winter of 2002 (iirc). That was when they went "silent" on the web site. Anyone else been around long enough to remember this? That was supposedly not long after Jack was made lead instead of Dakan.

    [ QUOTE ]
My questions are more related to story and lore, and later developments: If Rick had stayed as lead designer or even as lead writer, would the Council have taken over the 5th Column? Would Arachnos exist? Assuming he remained lead designer, would there have been a City of Villains (he was on record saying the idea of a separate city filled with villains was silly), or would they have existed in Paragon? Or would there have been player villains at all?

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's my understanding that Dakan remained a story consultant long after release. I don't know how much input he had on thing like the 5th vs. the Council.
  9. Castle is a former beta tester.

Rick Dakan was not just the original lead designer and creator of CoH lore, he also wrote the first series of the CoH comic.

Also, the end drain on elec is not nearly good enough on its own to be much of a detriment to anything (chances are the mob's hps will be going down at least as fast as the end).

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is not true. Just using Short Circuit and Ball Lightning can drain pve mobs pretty easily.

  12. I have a level 31 elec/kin and sapping is what he does best.

The trick is to slot short circuit for end mod instead of damage. It's also important to have knockback protection. Once you have short circuit fully slotted, use this strategy: run right into the middle of the group, fire off short circuit, then transfusion, ball lightning and short circuit again. Continue this attack chain until the mobs are all defeated. Short circuit is your big draining power. Two applications of short circuit (with transfusion and ball lightning between them) should drain the entire group. Transfusion and ball lightning also drain a little end, so use them liberally. Throw in siphon power and siphon speed occasionally to boost your damage and recharge.

If there's a boss in the group, hit him with charged bolts and lightning bolt while you're waiting for short circuit and ball lighting to recharge.

Once you have stamina three-slotted, you will be an AOE machine.

My current build is posted below. I've respeced a couple of times to drop powers I no longer needed. Zap was good for soling in the teens, but by the mid 20s I no longer needed it.

    Primary Power Set: Electrical Blast
    Secondary Power Set: Kinetics
    Level 1: Charged Bolts -- Acc-I(A), Acc-I(23), Dmg-I(31)

    Level 6: Siphon Power -- Acc-I(A), Acc-I(29)
    Level 8: Short Circuit -- Efficacy-EndMod(A), Efficacy-EndMod/Rchg(9), Efficacy-EndMod/Acc/Rchg(11), Efficacy-Acc/Rchg(13), Efficacy-EndMod/Acc(15), Efficacy-EndMod/EndRdx(17)

    Level 26: Maneuvers -- EndRdx-I(A)
    Level 28: Inertial Reduction -- RechRdx-I(A)
    Level 30: Tactics -- EndRdx-I(A)

I have a kin/elec defender in the mid 30s with transfusion and fulcrum shift. It's amazing how well he does solo, but I'm finding my corrupter is better. At least, so far.

From what I can see on the trailer at the 'Going Rogue' website, there is one guy with a pistol, which could easily be a thugs MM for all we know, or just a unique power for that character. Where did you see any signs of demon summoning?

    Going Rogue news release:
    [ QUOTE ]
Going Rogue will also introduce two primary new fictional characters representative of this alignment shift in the game's lore: Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed.

  15. It's interesting that the examples listed so far are all X-Men. Marvels mutants tend to only have one powerset. Many other heroes have two. Batman is MA/devices. Captain America is MA/shield. Superman is SS/Invuln. Spiderman is MA/SR.

Of course, comic book hero MA is not the MA we have in this game, but that's another thread entirely.
  16. [ QUOTE ]
I understand that... but then why give us the option of have a plant/ice (or fire or whatever) toon, etc. It was just something I was thinking about and wondering if there was another logical reason beyond ignoring your secondary.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I thought I answered that. Are you looking for an RP reason or a game design reason?

The RP reason can be whatever you like. Maybe your plant/ice character is a mutant who has the power to control plants and their genius scientist parents/sibling/spouse created an ice manipulation backpack for them to use.

The game design reason is that it's much more interesting to have two choices for powers. Mixing and matching means more variety and more fun.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
So, I've been racking my brain over this the last couple of days or so, especially with the increased discussion of other Super hero based MMO's on the rise...

How is it that we cannot choose only one power set? I mean, for example, some heroes only have ONE power they manipulate and grow. For example, Cyclops only has his laser beam. Jubilee only has her flash bomb things, Rogue only has that power absorbtion (which yes can lead to OTHER powers, but not permanently).

I know we have the option of getting two power sets, and most people enjoy that... and I could be told to pick any secondary powerset I want and ignore the hell out of my secondary... but why should I? I was just curious on other peoples opinions on the matter.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The premise is that you become better with your powers and discover new ways to use them as you gain experience.

Say you have an energy/energy blaster. The more you use your powers, the more you learn about them and develop new ways to use energy. The same with other power sets that are supposed to have synergy: elect/elect, elect/storm, etc.

Now, if you chose powers like energy/devices, you have to use your imagination to come up with a way to explain why they work together. One example is the backstory for a a kin/electric defender I have. His kin powers come from a science accident. His electric powers come from a suit that absorbs static electricity from the air and releases it upon command. His origin is basically science and technology.

Actually, they've said "no" to power customization for years.

    [/ QUOTE ]

They said a flat-out 'no' in July 07, but have since said that they are going to be doing things that they had previously said they couldn't do. Here's the Timeline of Quotes:

    [/ QUOTE ]

That was basically my point: The devs have basically refused to consider power customization for a very long time, but now they seem to be hinting that it's coming.

    The timeline was nice.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
I understand you have limited resources, and can't please everyone, but even just giving one thing, like dark blast to blasters, or whatever, would keep me playing for another issue. As it is, with no hope of anything new in sight, I think I am deactivating my account. It is been great fun, and maybe I'll be back in a year when there is something new to play with.

    GL all!

    [/ QUOTE ]

We're getting new power sets in issue 16: Going Rogue. At the very least, we can expect Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning. Wouldn't you rather have two new power sets than a port of Dark Blast?

Want a Dark blaster? Make a corrupter. Me, I'd rather have Dual Pistols.

They usually will not say /YES/ or /NO/ until the very last minute. It's all a bunch of 'maybes' and 'soons'.

Actually, they've said "no" to power customization for years.

I don't really care if it's coming or not, but if power customization is not going to be in Going Rogue, they should say so quickly, rather than let players get their hopes up.

That depends entirely on why Castle and crew and everyone else are so all-consumingly busy at the moment.

    Because they're making NEW stuff.

I'll take new stuff over power proliferation any day.
