If it reduces the defense of a mob, that makes it easier for you to hit.
For an increase in damage, it would have to decrease the resistance of that mob.

You might not notice it because the DEF debuff is small - I don't know what the size of the debuff is, or its duration. Sorry.

Although I can;t be sure about a distance change, I'll throw in this observation - I can still, in I6, outsnipe (distance-wise) a Nemesis sniper with my blaster, using Blazing Bolt.

Yes, it is possible to stop hearing your pets responding to orders.

In the Options menu, under the General tab, about two-thirds of the way down in the 'Chat' section, the last option is for 'Pet-Response Text'. 3 options - Only pets you own, Owned and teammate pets, or Disabled.

I think you want the last one.
