Vines are the patterns only I believe, it should really have been made clearer to that point in the release notes.

You have to target the ground for the portal, just like Ice Storm but that can be done whilst in flight or hover. Being unable to summon the portal whilst in one of those modes is, as TheMESS puts it, needlessly restrictive. If you aren't in range of the ground, fine but being unable to summon it whilst 1 foot off the ground is stupid imo. If the animation can play whilst in flight or hover as is suggested above for MM then I can't see a reason why this restriction can't be lifted.
