Hi folks,
In an architect mission I'm testing, as soon as I step into the mission, all the dialog spoken by the NPCs pops up, even that of a boss at the other end of a single-level Warehouse map. Any suggestions for fixing this? -
I've been trying to edit my .storyarc file with a text editor (textpad.exe), but when I try to access it in CoH, its redflagged and can't be opened. Is there something I need to be careful of when I'm using a text editor, such as characters that need special formatting?
Thanks!

Quote:I think you missed my point Jophiel. Are you saying that it's technically impossible for them to force users to use automated names and costumes? Because if they wanted to, they certainly could have designed the game that way.Of course they do and it's absurd to suggest that forcing everyone into random names would be a remotely viable option. And your comment about costumes reinforces what I said: Names and costumes are a requirement (to varying degrees). Power names are not. Even this thread has shown pretty lackluster support for the notion. Given the potential scope for abuse with 20+ powers per character and the lack of necessity for it, it's just not worth doing. Saying that "Well, they let us name characters" is an argument that just doesn't wash.
Though as you correctly pointed out, it's not a "remotely viable option" for business reasons, principally that if people couldn't choose their own character names and costumes, most of them wouldn't want to play. A cornerstone of good business is customer satisfaction, after all.
And because it satisfies players to customize their characters, we have an enhancement system that allows us to configure the effects of our powers, we keep getting more and more costume options, and shortly we'll be allowed to change the look and animations of our powers. By your argument, the Power Spectrum update also suffers from a "lack of necessity". Would you call it a poor business decision?
It's for business reasons that I think this is a worthwhile avenue to pursue. With Champions Online spreading its wings, CoX needs every competitive differentiator it can get its hands on. Being the only superhero MMO to offer FULL customization of powers, down to the name, would be a good one.
As for the "potential scope for abuse", well, there's been several suggestions on how that might be handled or even completely avoided. Honestly though, I think the weight of that argument rests on a worst case scenario where everyone who plays decides to create offensive names for their powers.
How many players do you see running around with offensive names, and how long do they last? How many serious long-term players, those level 50s with the 20+ power slots you mentioned, do you estimate would engage in that kind of behavior?

Quote:I want to meet that toon. Honest to God, I do.People who refuse me naming my power Crystal Dragon Jesus Form or Rain of Cats and Dogs stand in the way of freedom of expression!
I think I figured out a way to help deter potential abuse of a power rename feature - make the initial rename free, but future renames have to be earned or purchased like respecs.
So when you get a new power, you can change it or keep the default name. If a player uses a single offensive or potentially copyright-infringing name ("Captain America's Shield Bash", "Harry Potter's Wand of Fizzlesticks", etc.) for a power, once caught a GM resets ALL of their powers to their default names. If that player wants another opportunity to rename their powers, they have to run a TF or drop money for a recipe.

Quote:Well, like every other player, you named your character for your sake, you probably spent at least a little time selecting his or her costume for your sake, and you will probably customize the look of your powers for your sake, why not name your powers as well? Or don't, it would be your choice.
If I'm just renaming the power for my sake, I personally don't see the point.

Quote:I eventually just learned to ignore the power names, myself... I started enjoying sets like Martial Arts, Katana, and Ninjutsu once I learned to ignore the artsy, pseudo-mystical, or unintelligible names of the sets and focused only on what they did. My ninja MM has a Middle Eastern background; AFAIAC he doesn't have ninjas but assassins. My martial arts characters just throw kicks.

Although, granted, there's no easy answer I can give off the top of my head for the data mining issues, particularly if you're studying other toons than your own. Good point.
Quote:For one thing (and the most obvious), the game HAS to allow you to select your own character name. They don't have to allow to name your own powers. In fact, for the minimal return on it, it's opening themselves to a whole lot of headaches for nothing.

The devs recognize this, which is why, 16 issues later, we're getting the ability to customize our powers. I'm sure in a future release there will be even more customization options, perhaps allowing MMs to costume their own pets.
Mental Midget pointed out a good middle-of-the-road approach, allowing characters to select their power names from corresponding menus, just as the current Title system is offered. While that wouldn't offer total customization, it would provide an exceptional amount of flexibility and eliminate the potential for abuse. Myself, I'd rather name my own power, but I'll take what I can get.

Quote:Those are some good points that I hadn't thought of, Bill. But consider:/this, for starters. And I'm sure it'd throw the game on occasion. For instance, right now I can go in-game, type in [Storm Kick] and see what it does. It's a simple (SCR, I know) lookup. [Smellmyfoot] or [Nostril extractor] isn't.
Go ahead, look at my power list and have all of them - offensive and defensive, buffs, debuffs, etc. - listed as [My Powers!] - literally - and tell me what I'm capable of. Am I a TA/Arch defender? Am I a blapper? "Pure healer?" Have I ignored my buffs and debuffs, or am I a balanced character?
Now do it with dual builds, log off the character, come back after, say, a vacation, or not playing the character for a month, and tell *yourself* from that list what those powers do and which build you're on.
1) Half of what makes a character (a blaster, True Defender, blapper, whatnot) is the powers he or she selects, the other half is the slotting. If you're that concerned with knowing the capabilities of a teammate, you're only getting half the story anyway by looking at their powerset. If it's someone that six-slotted Brawl and Rest, you're in trouble no matter what powers they chose.
2) How often do you really run into a player that's messed up they're power selection? It's pretty hard to do unless you deliberately select all power pools.
3) If you want to know what role your teammate fills, you can always ask. Who doesn't like to talk about their characters?
4) True, after taking a break there is a little disorientation refamiliarizing yourself with your toon. But your power trays don't list your powers by name, they show icons, which are very consistent in usage (Small Blast = Small Arrow, Medium Blast = Bigger Arrow, Hold = Diamond, etc). I don't think you'd need a lot of extra time to reaquaint yourself with your toon.
Again, you've got some good points. But weighed against the expanded customization that individual renaming of powers offers, I'd favor customization.

If that's the case, then they need to invest in more customer service.
With Champions coming out next month, CoX isn't the only superhero/villain MMORPG anymore. CoX needs competitive differentiators to set it apart from what looks to be a pretty slick, well-put together game. Greater customization options would be an excellent route.

How is that any different from
"PWNURMOM hits you with Fire Blast for 165 Fire damage!"
If they can monitor character names, why not power names? -
They could extend the same profanity filter that the chat log utilizes to cover the combat log as well.
CocoCabana -
Hmm. A few thoughts:
1) Previously, the ability to modify the colors/appearance of powers was also off the table.
2) They already have safeguards in place to monitor character names, why not apply these to the power names as well?
3) If this is a real concern, why haven't they locked down character bios? There's instant TTP for ya, right there.

I've only played with the Power Spectrum tool a little bit on the test server, and I already love it. It goes a long way to furthering the uniqueness of each hero and villain in CoX. Why not take it a step further, and as well as allowing characters to change the colors and animations of their powers, allow them to be renamed as well?
Would this require a massive change in the game mechanics? I'm thinking this could be accomplished with a new text string which is only called for the character description and combat logs, a simple cosmetic feature that wouldn't touch the underlying processes of CoX.
This would be a massive step forward in customization. With the ability to change the appearance of powers, and their effects (through Enhancements and special IOs), the ability for players to actually name their powers is a logical step.
For example, the promo image for Power Spectrum has a character utilizing what looks like green Ice Armor. It looks pretty cool! I'd like to create a new character with that kind of look, but my vision of the character doesn't include his powers being Ice based. I'd like to think of them being Energy based instead. And if I could rename those powers....
Frozen Armor -> Deflector Shield
Hoarfrost -> Armor Amplifier
Chilling Embrace -> Warp Field
etc.

Problems:
You have a lot of very important high end powers; in particular sleet (35) and heat loss (38). You don't get your 3rd attack (Bitter Ice Blast) until 18. Ice-Cold is very endurance intensive and stamina at 20 is a must.
[/ QUOTE ]
Stamina is not a must, although I'd agree with you as far that taking Stamina at 20 is a good move, until you have enough slots (and money) to play with (mid to late 30s - although I did it at 27) to slot SO EndReds.
My Ice/Cold Corr, Dr. Celsius (Lvl 28, Protector) runs fine without Stamina, using 1-2 SO EndReds in his powers. -
"The Jaunt" was also a Steven King short story, I think it was part of the "Night Shift" collection. It had a pretty nasty punch at the end - ever wonder what happens in that microsecond 'tween ports?

Id like to play Devils Advocate for a moment, and get some feedback. Why? Because I didnt buy CoV just so I could own another version of CoH, with a different spin on power sets and a face-lift on missions (Kidnap to target Rescue the Hostage / Rob the Bank Find the Glowie). I didnt buy it for PvP. I bought it because I wanted to play a villain, and frankly Im a little disappointed that the gameplay mimics CoH so closely I mean CMON, I cant even terrorize civilians? Geeesh.
Im not trying to bait anyone here Id really like to hear any observations (and critiques) on the following argument:
Thesis: The purpose of City of Villains was to provide a venue for gamers to play as villains. To that end, players might engage in behaviors described as griefing in other venues, including kill-stealing, insulting dialogue, ambushing and even mob-training (oh my!).
However, this thesis hinges on one caveat: that the goal driving these negative actions must be for personal gain, not the harassment of another player,
I will tackle the above actions point by point, with exceptions for when role-play turns into griefing.
Kill Stealing
One of the most well known and despised practices in CoH, particularly in the starting levels. Kill stealing is the act of jumping into someone elses battle, helping the other player, who has typically done most of the work already, to finish off the opponent for a few easy points of XP and maybe a drop.
While kill-stealing is one of the grayer areas of griefing, as it not so much hurts another player as it is annoying, kill-stealing is considered discourteous (and rightfully so) and frankly lazy play, capitalizing on the work of another.
While villainy can certainly be hard work, theres no premium on discourtesy for the dark-hearted, especially for experience or loot. Its frustrating to watch someone reap rewards from your hard work, but thats what villains do. Its even more frustrating to lose at the hands of another player in a PvP zone, but you accept those risks when you enter a zone. If you are playing a game called City of Villains, shouldnt you accept the fact that your fellow players might choose to play true to form?
EXCEPT: Kill-stealing only falls under role-play as long as the motive is personal gain. Earlier in this thread, several players described watching higher level players lure low-level mobs away from hunting grounds, for no other reason than to spite the lower level characters. No personal gain = griefing.
Dialogue
Whats the fun of being a villain if you cant banter or insult your nemesis? I address this because some players will likely take affront to being cursed or taunted by foes and immediately chalk it up to griefing, rather than role-play. The purpose of the dialogue is simply to act the character, not insult or intimidate other players.
EXCEPT: Its a game. Insults like Evil will always Triumph, because Good is Dumb (shout-out to Mel Brooks and SpaceBalls) is role-playing (albeit silly RP). God, you are so f-ing stupid, I cant believe you died is just harassment, and griefing. I suppose its like the quote Lord Recluse cited re: pornography Ill know it when I see it. Regardless of intent, if a player asks another gamer to stop insulting them, that gamer should cease, otherwise it moves from RP to griefing.
Ambushing and Even Mob Training (oh my!)
Ill use Sirens Call as an example here, because the zone mission Collect the meteor shard offers a definite personal gain for players, whether theyre a hero or a villain.
Earlier, Spinomania brought up the issue of being ambushed and defeated while weakened. This point was discussed ad infinitum, and I wont dwell on it myself. Suffice to say You enter the zone, you take your chances.
Say Im a villain. I found a meteor shard, but a couple of those pesky heroes are ahead of me. Fortunately, they attracted a mob of Shivan Behemoths, which are keeping them busy, but not for much longer. If they finish off the mob before I collect the shard, they can defeat me easily. So (being a Dominator?) I slap a hold on the both of them, and let the beasties make Shivan Strew out of them while I collect my meteor shard in peace, whistling a merry tune in counterpoint to their screams (errr .. in character of course).
Is this griefing? I couldnt take them on by myself, and there was a definite motive for gain taking such action.
For another example, say Im in Warburg, playing a villain (or for that matter, a hero) with Gravity Control Wormhole. If Im suddenly ambushed by a group of multiple opponents, is it griefing or self-defense if I Wormhole the sorry lot into a crowd of crabby NPCs across the street?
EXCEPTION: And back again to the meteor-ridden fields of Sirens Call. Lets say Im still that sly Dominator, having collected all the meteor shards I need, and I suddenly (and unseen) come across a group of heroes in battle with a horde of Behemoths. If I slap a hold on them so they get slaughtered, theres no personal gain for me at all, either in XP or in shard collection and at this point its griefing, not role-play.
Whew- I got kinda long-winded on this one, hope I didnt bore too many of you. Again, Im not trying to bait anyone here, I just want feedback.
Thanks!
