  1. Gutted. Absolutely gutted.

The damn thing is that I haven't played for 4 years, because I completely burnt out on the game after 3 years, and I'd just fired it up again and was really getting into the game again, loving my PB.

Still time to get it to 50 though

Anyway, nothing much to add other than my condolences to Paragon, and my thanks for all their great work.

    This game was PUG Heaven.

    'nuff said.

    Of TankMages

Nice post. Getting into the subject of "god like" characters is a bit of a red herring really.

When Superman began, he wasn't like this "hard infinity" that by default trumps everything else power-wise, he was just super strong and super tough. Power inflation crept in when DC made Superman collect a grab-bag of powers just because other heroes were being made by other companies that had those powers (e.g. another company made a hero that could fly, so a few issues later suddenly Superman could fly).

Apart from Superman and a few other cosmics, who are just trumping McGuffins, most superheroes just have various combinations of powers. Some are more powerful than others, but there's this little thing in economics called "comparative advantage" - I might be better at everything than everybody else, but it still pays to do the thing I'm best at, and let others do the things I'm not so good at, even if my "not so good" is better than anyone else could do.
So there's room for characters with varying power levels in the comics.

It's just that there's not so much room for varying power levels in a videogame, which has to be balanced.

Really, the problem for a videogame is not whether abilities should go cosmic, but whether and how they should be balanced against each other. There seems to be two options: make every character sort of tank-magey, or at least self-sufficient, or make various classes that interlock.

Over time, MMOs have moved towards the first option, because people no longer have the patience to work with a class that may be painful to solo.

But the first option is viable. I notice some people twitting Champs, but actually that game is fairly well balanced IMHO, given the tremendous complexity of trying to balance a game in which anybody can take more or less any power. It's simply not true that a super powerful character obsoletes other characters - if they're all super powerful and a bit tank-magey, but still short of truly cosmic, then they can't be everywhere at once, and there's still a need for a team of them.

Yes, the Unreal Tournament type of problem you've just mentioned is the Scylla over against which the Charybdis of a game just looking too darned old lurks.

If there were to be a graphics overhaul of the models, it would have to be more or less in the same spirit as the old stuff, only "better looking".

I think there's some subjective variability in what "better looking" might mean, and you're always going to upset someone about something, but I'm sure it could be done in a way that upset only a very small number of people.

IOW, I don't want to log in and find the look of my favourite character has changed in any way, I just want to log in and find it more detailed, a bit more realistic, a bit better proportioned, etc.

But this type of overhaul must be hellishly boring for the artists, so I'm sure they're tempted to change all sorts of things ...
  4. The reason I ask is because, having in the interim played many other MMOs, all of which have things to commend them, I've come to realize that CoX is actually one of the best out there. It's well-nigh perfect in so many ways - mainly in that it allows casual players to team up at the drop of a hat. I've come to realize that (strange as it may seem) this is an incredibly rare thing in MMO-land.

But yeah, nothing major ever needs to change in CoH, it could go on forever. But I guess, to keep up with the times, it would be nice to have the character model graphics updated a bit. Again, nothing drastic, more or less like it is, but better (less boxy models, basically). Cozzies/textures are pretty much ok (apart from a few odd low rez textures here and there still), but it's the models themselves that are just looking too low poly.

One of the few other MMOs I actually like a lot, EVE Online, has managed to gradually reinvent itself graphically more than once, and looks absolutely stunning these days. I know an actual game world with lots of real "clutter" in it is a different kettle of fish from a game that's mostly empty space, but still, Paragon have done great work with the game world, and if I had a remaining wish for CoX going forward it would be this, just better models.
  5. Hi all, just gotten back into the game after a loooooong break. It all feels fresh now and I love some of the changes that have happened over the years - and of course all the new powers, etc.

I particularly like the new graphics tweaks. Certainly the environment looks much, much better and stands up reasonably well to modern MMOs.

But the character models are looking a bit ropey these days. Low poly counts, boxy faces, etc.

Does anyone know if there are any plans, or any plans have been mooted, for revamping the models?

    TIA

    Updater hanging

I haven't played the game in a wee while and wanted to check out the new shiny.

I seem to have 111mb to load, but the updater just hangs at 15 mb, with 0b/s and some ridiculous time left to download. It just sits there. Restarting the updater makes no difference, it just sits there.

I'm on a Dual Core machine running Vista 64 bit and mobile broadband. I've checked my Firewall and both the program and the updater are excepted. It doesn't make any difference whether I use msconfig and reboot with nothing but the barest essentials on (e.g. no non-MS services or startup stuff, inlc. antivirus), updater still just sits there with no action, stuck at 15/111 mb, and 0b/s.

Never had the slightest bit of trouble with CoX (apart from the occasional after-patch stuff that many suffered from) in all the time I played it before, so this is new to me.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated. TIA!
  7. Good guide apart from I'd disagree with your opinion of Spore Burst, especially if you're thinking of the Plant/Fire Dominator as team-friendly. Spore Burst is situational, but very useful (especially with Domination up) to sleep adds, because it has a huge range.
