Someone actually makes a printer that paints (I'm assuming it's actually like airbrushing) an image you make digitally onto a canvas which can then be matted and framed.
[/ QUOTE ]
There is also a 3d printer that will print out sculpture. I believe it "prints" a layer of resin over a surface and builds up until the object is created. -

All artists are influenced by the world around them, and will copy. It is a simple fact of art. I have seen several variations on the dragon tatoo becoming live on a woman's back, for instance. Many with similar poses. I don't think that the picture you pointed out was the first.

Oh, ok. So I have a Hellboy graphic novel sitting on my desk. Mignola wasn't the first one to create a devil superhero character, so it's ok for me to copy the cover of the book and pass it off as my creation because a lot of other people have similar stuff out there. Awesome.

In closing, you really didn't need to make yourself look like a jerk. You could have chosen to send a private message to Anyweth, but instead you posted this publically. For this reason alone you have lost any respect that I would have had for your opinions.

Art theft is a common occurance. The best way to deal with it is publically for a few reasons.
1. It discourages people from doing it.
2. If the person has done it because they are unaware of the proper etiquette, it educates them about the seriousness of the issue as well as anyone else following the discussion.
3. In the case of an actual thief, dealing with them in private may not be the solution.
For example, a few months ago my sister came across the website of an artist selling prints. She recognized several of them as belonging to an artist named Robert Chang. She contacted Chang, who then emailed the owner of the site directly. The guy apologized profusely, explained that it was all a mistake, and took the stuff down right away. Handled politely and maturely, right? Not quite.
Chang posted about this site on an artist's forum and other people went there and discovered their stuff up for sale as well. In the end, not a single thing on the site was this guy's art. Chang keeping it private wouldn't have helped any of the other artists being ripped off. -

Why didn't you contact her privately to converse on the matter in a mature, adult fashion? Did it just not occur to you that doing so publically not only hurts her, but damages you as well? If you're that concerned about the matter that you don't want her DevArt account suspended or banned, what purpose do your posts in this thread achieve?
I'm asking these questions seriously, because I just can't find any justification for this kind of action or attitude. You can roll your eyes and dismiss it as 'witty' whathaveyou, I suppose, but do please humor me so that I can better understand what motivation is.

Posting about it openly is the norm for all of the graphics forums I follow. This is to alert other artists that someone may be plagiarizing their work and is part of how the online art community polices itself. I think the only reason it may seem strange to people here is that this forum is for a video game and the majority of posters are not artists themselves. -
Hiya,
Several years ago at a convention I picked up an art program called ZBrush, basically in the hope that it would be useful for texturing my 3d models. I tried several times to get into it but the interface/workflow was very different from what I was used to so I gave up. A little over a week ago I discovered I was eligible for a free upgrade to the latest version, which is really amazing.
The workflow is much easier to grasp now for what I want it to do and I've been able to get some results. I've done roughs of two heads so far to get the hang of the new 3d sculpting tools.
This one is my thugs/poison mastermind: Scratch Acid.
I think this one will eventually be one of her 2nd tier pets. -

Regarding postwork in general - The purpose behind modelling the characters as accurately as possible in 3D is specifically to avoid excessive postwork such as repainting faces. If I were assigned to create a full comic, there is absolutely no way I could do an entire issue (let alone a mini-series) where I needed to repaint every face on every panel from scratch. Thus, I'm leaning towards the comptuer-generated faces and trying to perfect those likenesses.

Given that you are trying to get away from post work and rely more on pure 3d, now's a great time to drop Poser like a bad habit. In my opinion, you're a skilled and talented artist who's invested in a workflow based on a crappy tool. Poser makes sense if you're using it as a point of departure for substantial post work. For an extended project where it will be used panel after panel, page after page for an entire book I have a hard time believing that post will be enough to compensate for the overall quality level.
This image, after lots of post, still has the hallmarks of Poser: bland lighting and rendering, a generic stock feeling to the characters, poor plastic-looking materials, etc. Batman's cape looks like it was a ball of hot plastic that melted over him. I'm not saying this is bad work;this is great work for someone using Poser. If you took a crayon and painted the Sistine chapel with it, I'd feel the same way. "That's awesome, I just wish you hadn't done it in crayon."
Some people have described digital art as being too immature to handle this sort of project. I'm not sure what art they're looking at. There are artists doing digital sculpture with ZBrush and Mudbox that is both quickly produced and insanely detailed. -
Awesome! I'll have to check it out, thanks.

I spent a total of four years living/working in Japan. The first time was from 1992 to 1994. The second was 1997 to 1999. So it's been a while since I was there and it's possible that things have changed a lot, but I doubt it.
First of all, JET was very unpopular with the foreigners over there at the time for 2 reasons:
1. You went where JET decided to place you. So if they needed you to go freeze your butt off in Aomori, so be it.
2. They took care of the essentials in terms of getting your work visa and setting you up with somewhere to live, but they also paid considerably less.
When I did it, the general way English teachers got set up there is by entering the country on a 30 day tourist visa. You tell immigration its a vacation. Then check the job ads in a magazine like Kansai Time Out to see who is hiring (probably one of the big schools like Nova or ECC)
You go on an interview. If you get hired, you start working illegally while your work visa is being processed. The company will pay you with a "loan" that you never actually pay back. When you're visa is ready, you leave the country to go to an outside consulate to pick it up....most of the people flew to Seoul to pick it up. You went, you got it, you came back in to the country and then everything was gravy. It's a very nervewracking process but if you want to make more money and have more control with regards to where you live (particularly if you want to live in Kyoto or Tokyo) then its more than worth it.
There are other circumstances as well. If you have some sort non-tourist style visa (eg. as the dependent of someone with a work visa) you may be able to change your visa to a work visa without leaving the country. I did the second time I was there.
If you go non-JET, you'll need to make you're own living arrangements. A lot of Japanese landlords have gaijin houses that cater to foreigners. It's ok but you're living with a bunch of post college types sharing a kitchen, bathrooms, etc.
If you get your own apartment, you'll probably need some savings for key money (a one-time non refundable bribe to get the apartment basically).
It's obviously good to study Japanese, but I'd focus on things like counting, buying things, asking directions first and foremost. Learn hiragana and katakana asap so that you can read the signs for trains, busses, etc -

I really like the sketch. My main suggestion is to do more with the compression wrinkles on the skirt and blouse to round out the forms of the body. Her waist kind gets lost in the current version, but you could indicate foreshortening with wrinkles where the tummy flows into the groin area. Also a bend where the upper part of the right thigh meets the crotch. This would also bring the right leg forward in space a little, giving it more depth.
The other suggestion is to reposition her right arm. Right now if you follow the contour of the right side of her figure it juts out of the center in kind of a stiff gesture. If you lift it up somehow (doing something with her hair or leaning on something), it opens up the curve of the figure and adds more interest to the posture.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Nice job! -
