Yeah spines is the oddball. I've got throw spines and combined with elude/hasten it is a thing of much pwnage (as you probably know the damage output is just wrong). Ripper can be problematic to line up but when you get your herding technique down pat (spamming hasted throw spines is a good way to get a lot of mobs bunching to kill your [censored]) it is golden.

And yeah spine burst is ... argh. I wish they'd replace it with something more interesting/useful.

-fly and the range on impale is frankly awesome, knockback won't bring that annoying flyer down to you to finish off
