What a foolhardy assumption to make... "People who use the word "toon" are probably immature."

    [/ QUOTE ]

For the record, that isn't my assumption, it's somebody else's from further up.

Mine isn't an assumption, but a conclusion: "People who use the word 'toon' - and, in general, call things by goofy slang terms instead of their right names - irritate me by doing so."

I'm just annoyed by things like that: gamer slang, AIM shorthand, TXT MSG abbreviations. When I see someone who makes a habit of typing like that, I don't draw any deeper conclusions about him - I just find his conversational style irritating and uninformative enough that I have to decide whether it's worth the trouble of trying to understand what the hell he's talking about. It's certainly a forgivable offense, but it's not a way to make a good first impression on anyone who cares about precision of speech.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And what's sad is that many people who post like that may well be intelligent, likable people in real life... but we'll never know it because the first thing they make us think is "Uh oh... this is some freakin kid." It's no one's fault, really. It's just the way some of us are instinctually wired. *shrugs* I've even tried on occasion to look past the stereotypes and give people the benefit of the doubt, but time after time they prove to me that my first impression of them was right on the nose. Not always, but 90% of the time. Some of them are even really nice for kids, but no less irritating due to immaturity. So I gave up on giving folks that benefit of the doubt; which I regret because of the cool people I might have met, but don't regret because that stance lets me avoid headaches.

On a side note, the tone of the thread seems to be getting slightly hostile... maybe I'm reading too much into things, but I liked it better when it was just a friendly debate. Let's play nice.

Indeed, it is unlike that this thread will convince either side to change their minds.

Do forum threads EVER succeed in that?

It's a variation on grammer-nazism. There are people who use grammer rules to make themself understood and there are people who use them as some sort of acid test for a person's worth as a human.

    [/ QUOTE ]

To some extent, that's instinctive. I certainly can't help it half the time. If I meet two different people on two seperate occasions, and one of them says things like "Hi there. I really enjoy playing my Illusion/Empathy Controller, due to the sheer number of pets he gets." but the other says something like "omg i luv my ma/regen scrapper he pwnz n roxxorz! what AT r u playin"... *pause*

Well, number one instinctively seems like an intelligent well versed person, and so mentally that's an automatic point in his favor for me liking him. Number two could very well be a smart, mature likable person, but instantly he gives me the subconscious impression that he's a 13 year old goober. That may not be fair, but that's instinct (at least for me).

I have a friend in my sg, for example who lives in my town and I see all the time in real life. He's a smart, eloquent guy who just got his Masters in computer programming and software design... but in CoH/CoV, he uses ultra shortened words. "u" instead of you, or "r" instead of are. He doesn't say pwnz or roxxors or n00b, but if you just meet him online it would be easy to judge him unfavorably. He just doesn't like to take the time to post as eloquently as he speaks. Is it fair to him? No. But it's still the instinctual reaction a lot of people are going to have.

Now mind you, I certainly don't advocate abandoning all shortened internet slang, as I find myself using some of them, but I don't think any of the words or phrases I shorten demean my posts much, if any. I am willing to shorten be right back to brb, supergroup to sg, and people to ppl... that's about it.

The quoted poster mentioned people using others' grammar as a sort of acid test on their worth as a person... I'm saying it's not that we're consciously doing it; those people can send an unfavorable implication of their intelligence and maturity without either party really realizing it. Perhaps there's nothing that can be done about it, but there you have it.

But I doubt the OP is even really rabid about the issue. It's probably just something that he noticed and thought "what the hell" and made a post to see if anyone else thought it was weird too.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You would be correct, my friend.

"Toons" stems from the earliest of MMO's (most notably the Realm and Ultima Online) in which character WERE very cartoon-y. WoW has only made this term more prevalent.

And THIS is the answer I was looking for from the getgo... thank you, StrikeFalcon

_castle_ said it first... on page 2... it's in the dev digest...

    [/ QUOTE ]

True, but this time UO and WoW, as well as referencing that the early MMOs looked very cartoony was mentioned.

"Char(s)" has also been rejected before as being too confusing to the power Char.

    [/ QUOTE ]

-That- I really don't understand. I mean you'd really have to be spacing out, not paying attention when hearing "Yeah, I have a level 34 char who's a Martial Arts/Regen Scrapper... he's pretty cool" or "Lemme hop on a different char" to mistake the "char" in that phrase to mean the Fire Power. It would be very rare to find a situation where a phrase was typed where one could honestly have any confusion there.

im not tryingto be rude.. but why does this matter again ?

    It doesn't...

    ...at all...

    *L*

Wow, I never expected to get this many replies on this thread... or to have so many people take it so seriously. All I wanted to know was where it started, and state my opinion that to me it sounds goofy.

In the end it's just a preference, but to me I use character because I did get my start on P&P RPGs and comic books (I started on comic books about the time Kitty Pryde joined the X-Men if that gives you an idea, hehe)... Sure I've played video games over the years, and sure I've watched just about every type of cartoon made over the years, from zany stuff like Looney Tunes to mature content rated shows like Legend of the Overfiend and Animaniacs But to me, cartoons and comics have nothing to do with the other, unless the cartoon is an adaptation of said comic. "Toons" to me carries with it the connotation that there's little to no depth to the character. Ie, we know Daffy Duck is greedy and jealous of Bugs, but other than that he's pretty one dimensional (Much as I love him... Woo hoo! Woo hoo!)... A character on the other hand, has depth... in our sg for example, I've been involved in some pretty heavy forum based RP, and I enjoy it immensely. To me, the more my character in CoH is developed, the more meaning taking on each mission or fighting each mob has. My main character has a sister that was as a part of the RP kidnapped by a Tsoo slaver, and nearly got shipped overseas to be sold into slavery, had the sg not intervened and saved her. Now, whenever I take on a mob of Tsoo, it means so much more than if any other character fought them. I even have special binds just for those occasions, hehe. To me, this isn't a standard video game, it's an MMO adaptation of the comic book superhero genre, and that makes it more akin to a comic book than to a video game or cartoon.

But then, everyone's welcome to call their walking, fighting collection of polygon bits whatever they want to call him or her
  9. All kidding aside, it baffles me every time I see someone refer to their character as their "toon"... Maybe it's because I'm a P&P RPGer and not a video gamer, but where in the heck did that originate? I think it sounds pretty silly.

    Thanks

The effect of the +5 End is rather negligible considering the issues some players have been describing.

Without Stamina, +5 End is +0.08 End Per Sec.

With Stamina with three even level SO's, +5 End is +0.12 End Per Sec.

    Helpful? Sure.
Going to cause the issues players have been having going from 105 End to 100? I don't think so.

    EDIT:

Just had a thought. We have "Conserve Power" which for a duration reduces the cost of all powers.

What if Life Insurance is an auto-power that has that in reverse by accident? Like, it slightly increases the cost of all powers. If it's something like a 10% Increase to Endurance Costs, than it would be unnoticeable with the majority of powers we use a lot (I mean in looking at the End Bar, a 5.2 end power that costs 10% more would be 5.7), but would be noticeable with powers that have 25+ Endurance Cost (A power with 25 End would be 27, and something with 30+ End would be 33), so perhaps this could be something that could be looked into. (Multiple AT's and multiple powers tested would be best of course)

Something like this would actually be close to what Frosticus experienced. Frosticus calc'd out the EPS of her slotting.

    3.98 EPS before I7
    3.73 EPS after I7

Now, let's factor in my theoretical 10% increase in endurance, and that 3.73 EPS becomes 4.1 EPS. Which quite well mirrors Frosticus' two vids.

Except, that Frosticus doens't have Life Insurance in the After I7. =\ Still, something somewhere seems to be increasing costs by around 10% it seems.

Whats even more interesting about Frosticus' two vids. The After I7 one, has the Blue Icon Accolade that the before didn't, which isn't it a +5 End boost? So, maybe its there too? Not sure of course, just kinda tossing out ideas now.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I doubt Life Insurance is the cause of it all, since it's happening to CoH characters as well.

Turns out for me Focused Accuracy was the source of most of my woes, but even still, my 45 Tank is nowhere near the end efficient monster he was a few weeks ago.
