The moral ambiguity for me comes with killing large numbers of people to save the world, and where do you draw the line? That's a much harder question to answer, and I'm not sure I could answer it.

I didn't say self sacrifice, I said Kill one person. Two very different things.
Kill by definition means: (to deprive of life : cause the death of ) but more specifically I was speaking of Murder: included in the very definition of Kill as: (specifically implies stealth and motive and premeditation and therefore full moral responsibility)
Second:
You say "large numbers" How large is a large number? How many people is it okay to kill/ murder to save the world. At what number does it become bad. I can answer that question for me and my family. That number is zero. To kill/murder even one person is a price which is just too high.
Would I lay down my life to protect: a family member, friend, casual acquaintance, a stranger? Would I have the courage to be a Harry Stamper in Armageddon and denotate a nuke to save the world, I would like to believe so.
Would I want to No. I love life, my family and friends. Many people I know I believe would do the same. Thats self sacrifice.
The thread title is "Evil define by action, intent both or neither? I posted other comments here but to sum it up.
Yes, Evil is defined by both; Action and Intent.

It would be a safe bet that the heroes would trounce the villains should they arrive to attempt such a dasterly deed.
Plus it would also require those with Threat Lvl 50 villains I would hazzard to guess but my token Villain is only TL 25 or 23. Don't even think I can enter the RV zone.

My graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD 3650 1 GB DDR2 which if I have read everything correctly should support (and will) Ultra mode.
The other card I have which is also good is the Galaxy GeForce 200 series GT220 1GB DDR2 both these cards are mid level to low cost and provide excellent graphics for my computer needs.

We are having a similar discussion in the Liberty Forum. Something I read reminded me of something else.
A round table, where all were considered to be equal and free to speak their mind. Where the idea was born, Not might is right, but might for right. Where the strong protect the weak, help the poor and down trodden.
If killing one person saves the world, is that a world worth saving?
Would the movie Armageddon have had the same ending impact if Harry Stamper had been killed in order to save the planet then his noble selfless act of staying behind.
It had been a long time from the time I had read the Watchman to when I saw the movie, there were things I had forgot, and the ending was one of them. Was the movie good, it was okay, It left a bad taste in my mouth that that was what they were suggesting was heroic... I rather watch the first Hulk movie with the gamma dogs

For storytelling, non-farm, arcs this change sucks. I tried to find another word that sums up how I feel but that's the only one that encompasses my opinion.
I play a fair amount of AE. I enjoy having sidekicks or rescuing a hostage who then fights back. Some penalty I could see, but jumping jehosophat that's extreme. And it's going to have an appreciable impact on how MA arcs are chosen and played, and far too often dropped and neg rated for simply having an ally.
I have one arc affected. In mission four of The All-Seeing Eye you rescue a Malta Gunslinger who in turn helps fight Nemesis. I don't think he provides so much assistance as to be worth cutting the xp rewards in (roughly) half. He's not THAT good. I'm not changing it because his motivations for helping you contribute to the overall storyline.
I hate seeing story arcs like Teen Phalanx and Portal Bandits suffer for the actions of farmers.
/em Handclap... and people want to know why I don't spend time actually writing. Bad move but as always working as intended. Sigh.

You ask why you don't see more heroes, or feel more heroic.
When was the last time someone drop a mission, joined a TF just to start it for unknown heroes, assisted with a monster hunt, or streetsweep to help someone else?
The way we feel heroic is to be heroic. I can save Stateman all night long, run the Rikti off the mothership and into the ground. That makes me a hero of the city in the game.
But getting a tell in game directly asking for my help, "I know you're busy playing, but we're in a tight spot and need a hand etc..." And I exit my mission, base building, iconing (Yes I said Iconing) and I assist regardless of any rewards.
I feel Heroic, and some people will call me Hero.
The Dev's made it easier with Super Sidekicking. I helped a lowbie cross Steel Canyon with just a simple team invite. I was in Talos, he became SL 46 now the entire zone cons grey to him, well except Posi. (hehe) and He was able to get his wings. ( I forgot to ask him if he had heard a bell )
In short what makes a hero, IMO it is their heart, not the powers they have. The decisions each player/character makes ultimately decides which path they will take. It's a question they ask you to decide:
Blue or Red,
Resistance or Loyalist,
Good or Evil,
Hero or Villain
The city is out there, the citizens of Paragon think your a hero, but are you walking the talk?

PS the MSR has basicly replaced Hami as the community social event, and all zone cap at 100 except the hive which caps at 50. -

All those mentioned traits and more. It's interesting to see this thread pop up in light of the new expansion that is being worked on and scheduled to be launched at a later date. I have bookmarked it to follow it.
Pete, even when your on late and you assist even slightly you display the heroic nature. It's not big things like running a Mothership raid, hosting TF runs they are fun but somtimes just accepting a request to help someone in a tight spot and not get any reward even from a mission. Like my sig says:
"When you wake up seek the courage and strength to do the right thing.
Decide that this will be another day in which you Walk The Talk."
It is never easy to walk to a different drum beat but it is a decision each and everyone of us can do, and sometimes people also remember to pay it foward.
