Regarding loyalty and negative feedback out there..
Screw 'em. We know who our friends are.

Yes, some of us value loyalty quite highly.
Not all people interpret loyalty the same way.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Okay, this is probably going to make some people look at me funny. But hey. Screw 'em.
I haven't actually looked at my bank statements, so I can only factor my sub fees for the last 4-1/2 years and my point purchases for the last 180 days.
Between primary account in the middle of its 5th year of subscription, and a second coming to the end of its first year, plus purchases, I've spent at LEAST $1300 on CoH in the last 5 years.
Not to mention the money spent on acquiring the collectors' sets.
Not to mention the cash spent to fly me out to the Spring Player's Summit this year.
Sure, when measured against MILLIONS of dollars, it's a fart in a hurricane. And not everyone can, or would, spend that kind of cash on the game.
Yeah. I was doing "rent to pwn". So the **** what?
It works out to something slightly less than a buck a day.
I've spent more in movie tickets during that period.
I've spent more going to conventions during that period.
I've spent more than that on DVDs and Blu-Ray disks during that period.
And I've gotten an absolutely HUGE amount of entertainment out of it.
And one other thing.
The social interactions and the friends I've made during that time are absolutely beyond price.
So don't worry about these guys yakking about something they know little about. Continue to work to save the game. Continue to play the game as long as we can keep it here.
Let them wonder at what a bunch of people who spend a good chunk of their time being heroes in a game can do when they decide to cut loose in real life...
I've spent more money than I'd probably care to know about on this game over the years, but I've often outright said that I'm not loyal to it and if another game came along that did everything better I would happily jump ship. Nothing that's completely better has come along, and thus I'm sad to see this game ending, particularly in such an abrupt fashion. Now it appears I will have to settle for what I considered second best of the limited selection of create-your-own-superhero games.

Whether or not you like the fact that a large proportion of the SaveCoH comments are coming from people who are saying "I really used to like playing CoH. I really don't want it shut down" rather than "I love playing CoH. I don't want to lose it". It might not do US any good to see this trend, but unfortunately there's an awful lot of truth in it.

I reached tier 9 right as Celestial was on it's way out. A shame - I could only afford one of the slots. I was proud for having reached it though. I've also purchased every box - CoH, CoV, and GR.

Be that as it may, flaming them for it does not help. What's done is done, and I'd rather focus on making things right. We need support, and alienating supporters just because we're bitter helps nobody. Besides, what can we ask those people to do NOW?
|
As a side note, what does irk me somewhat is there is also a trend where "Anyone who doesn't agree with the establishment is automatically labelled a troll, irrespective of how politely they might put their counter argument".

The worst thing that could have happened in the first few days of the campaign would have been if the comments on Massively etc had been mostly variations on:
"Meh, never played it, so who cares."
"I didn't like it anyway."
"Wait? That game was still going? I thought it shut years ago."
I've seen plenty of shutdown announcements on Massively, and usually it's a one day story, accompanied by shrugs. This is the first time I've seen wide support from the broader MMO community. At the moment CoH needs all the friends it can get, be they current players, former players, or anyone else.
The Mr was subbed for 7 years, I've been playing for 6 before having to cancel our VIP.
WHY did we cancel? Well if it were JUST us, we would have started scaling down on food and whatnot...but we have these two beings called children that need to eat a little more than Ramen and KD on a daily basis. They also need clothes (Even consignment isn't cheap) and school supplies, hence why we had to stop "Paying" We still play the game as premiums.
Sometimes life gets in the way of fantasy. I had a job, I lost the job...We WERE gonna re-up our VIP right before the closedown announcement. "Hey let's get in some stipend points before Issue 24 hits" Was gonna re-up on the 1st to be honest, but on the 31st...everything went to well you know.
So yeah, We're loyal, but not to the point of starving our children loyal. Sorry.

Absolutely, but is "The ones protesting should have actually subbed to the game and maybe it wouldn't have been cancelled" considered trolling, or just an unfortunate and painful truth?

I personally don't subscribe to the notion that just because something is true, you have to make a point to say it. Yes, the truth hurts. You know it hurts. So unless you're trying to hurt people showing support, why say it? Why not just stick to solidarity and accept that even if these people didn't do as much as they could have, they are still showing support?
The thing is... We chide NCsoft for shutting down City of Heroes not because it wasn't profitable, but because it could have been more profitable, yet at the same time we turn people away because while they're showing support, they could have shown more support. Again - what's done is done. What do we do from here?

Down the line, I might ask myself what I can do to prevent lapses in subscriptions to try to prevent something like this from happening again, should it come to that. But we don't have time to play "shoulda, woulda, coulda" right now.

I didn't say "troll." I said "flame." A troll is someone who's posting just to be disruptive and cause problems. Someone who flames is a person who's just being unfair and overly aggressive.

I have been loyal to this game for 7 and a half years. I don't care if people are loyal VIP's, premium, or just here for free. The critics can say all they want, but this game speaks for itself and I guarantee any free player in this game is going to find something they just have to have and will pay for it - especially at the rate Paragon Studios delivered us quality new content.
Trolling / flaming whatever you want to call it I still dont think it applies here. This is obviously and quite rightly a very emotive subject for all of us and its therefore very easy to get carried away with the passion that we have for saving it. Just because someone else comes along that doesnt share that and points out sonething that is a perfectly valid point doesnt make them flamers or trolls. If anything by us angrily lambasting them for pointing out the obvious were far more guilty of what were accusing them for than they are!

Be diplomatic and understanding, is what I'm saying. And be positive, at least as much as you can.

Paragon City Search And Rescue
The Mentor Project
Forgive me as the following is not meant to be a bragging thing. But reading all the negative feedback lately about how:
"The ones protesting should have actually subbed to the game and maybe it wouldn't have been canceled"
Really pisses me off. This is between us here in the community as I have remained cordial, polite and supportive of the game in my responses elsewhere. I have been EXTREMELY loyal to this game and remain vigilant that we will continue. I think I missed about 6 months of subscription time over the years so that puts me at around 8 years of subscription. Which comes out to $1440 (My subscriptions ends tomorrow Sept. 11th) and still going if possible.
The Freedom started and I started out in the Tier8 bracket with 34 reward tokens. Over the time I limited myself to buying in $15 increments and currently have 111 sitting there spent or not. Lets say 15 were from VIP subscriptions just for the hell of it. That leaves 62 Tokens from purchases which comes out to $930:
Then there is all the packs, expansions and games I purchased..read EVERY pack they ever released:
Which comes out to roughly $350 give or take. To take the grand total to somewhere around $2,720 that I have spent over the last 8 years in support of the game and it's developers.
All this without mentioning the art collection over the years. So I ask you, where are these people coming from? I have seen FTP people just coming into the game with store bought power sets, costumes, perks, etc etc and that was very often. I don't think the game is being sunsetted for money reasons at all and Z mentions that Freedom was not a failure as well. The negative stuff going around is uninformed and meant to get an emotional response from us, don't buy into that! Keep up the fight! #SaveCoH
